f you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to time travel, walk through any one of the fourteen doors at the Casa Blanca mansion on Cherry Island in the heart of the Thousand Islands, and you will most certainly feel like you’ve arrived in a bygone era. The 1892 home is a time capsule; well preserved, exceptional with original furnishings and artifacts, and eager for new owners to bask in and honor its rich history. The first house that showcases Millionaires Row in the islands, it’s on the market for $2.4 million. Longtime proprietor and philanthropist Edith Lehr Amsterdam has owned
the home since 1962, when her late husband, Albert J. Amsterdam, a pharmaceutical supply businessman, spotted a for sale sign on the front of it during an afternoon boat ride. “We were looking to buy a bare island that our four kids could get out and run around on,” Mrs. Amsterdam said. “But when he saw the for sale sign he insisted we look at the house on Cherry Island. We went in on a Sunday and it wasn’t pretty. Everything was covered up and it smelled musty. I didn’t want it. What was I going to do with 13 bedrooms and eight bathrooms?” Despite her lack of interest in the 29room Gilded Age mansion, her husband
made an offer all the same. Because the house sat without occupants for roughly two years and was in need of attention, Mr. Amsterdam offered to purchase the 3.3-acre property for $25,000. The Amsterdam’s expected to be turned down. Much to Mr. Amsterdam’s surprise, they were not. Within a few short months, Albert and Edith Amsterdam were the owners of what has become one of the most iconic properties in the Thousand Islands. Casa Blanca, as the summer home is called, opens up twice a year for pubic tours to raise money for the Alexandria Bay Township Historical Society. As visitors float up to the dock, a round garden with a large flagpole in the center boasts
marble sink, gives guests a place to hang their hat and wash up after their commute to the island. It is in this room where the most intriguing artifacts exist: a player piano, vintage stereoscopes (3D viewers for photographs) and various Thomas Edison Cylinder Beeswax Records, each of which came with the house. Just though the reception room is the dining room. A small butler’s pantry rests just off the dining room where servants would prepare meals. In a narrow hallway off the pantry, a call box is mounted on the wall. An incredible feature, the wooden box would alert servants as to which room needed tending. A buzz would emanate from the box
and a small white card would pop up to let servants know which room to service. For the 19th century, the call box and call buttons in each room of the mansion proved innovative and ahead of their time. There is even a button on the floor under the dining room table that, when pressed by foot, alerts servants to tend to the guests there. These buttons fascinated the Amsterdam children. “Once the house was ours, we went around exploring and pressing buttons,” Mrs. Amsterdam said. “My children were in heaven. For months we continued to find little treasures in and around the house that fascinated us. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love

what is left of an ornate fountain that attracted much attention to the dwelling. Originally built by Louis Marx, a sugar and tobacco grower from Cuba, the once stately fountain represented status and showmanship of his 123-year-old home. “When we cleaned the fountain out,” Mrs. Amsterdam recalled, “we found the original steps were made of tinted glass. The Marx family would have a light on the fountain at night so the water could run down and show the steps in color. Nothing was too much back then. You had to compete with your neighbors.” A large reception room greets guests inside the house. Not far from the entrance, a small closet, constructed with it’s own

afternoon sun behind it. There is a full, updated kitchen beyond the butler’s pantry where servants used a second staircase to keep from being seen by guests. Thirteen bedrooms and eight bathrooms are interspersed throughout the three floors of the mansion. On the second floor, three master suites have private baths. The smaller bedrooms have their own marble sinks and share a bathroom in the hallway. The Amsterdam master has two beds, one in the main room and another on a connected sleeping porch. This porch is a favorite for the Amsterdam grandchildren, as they enjoy falling asleep to the lull of passing ships while taking in a cool summer breeze. The third floor is host to the servants’ quarters. At least seven servants took care of the house at any given time. This included the outdoor dwellings, like the laundry house, the boathouse, the icehouse, the pump house, and the gazebo. Much like the interior of the mansion, these separate houses also hold amazing pieces of history. In the laundry room, an original Maytag washer sits next to its modern sister. In the boathouse, a 1946 Hutchinson named Lady Edith rests. In the icehouse, tools that were used to chip ice blocks from the river still sit on shelves. The ice would be stored all year, kept cold in the summer months packed in sawdust. Above the boathouse is a two-bedroom apartment that was used by the head caretaker and boatman. Casa Blanca is one of four dwellings on Cherry Island. Mrs. Amsterdam is selling the property after five decades of ownership so she can enjoy her second home in Key West regularly. At 90, maintaining both properties has been trying.
