e are pleased to deliver our autumn edition of NNY Living Weddings. This is our fourth issue and, from a content perspective, we’ve covered a wide range of topics that relate to planning and executing the perfect north country wedding. When we published our first weddings edition of NNY Living in January 2014, we knew we were on to something good. To our great Ken Eysaman surprise, advertisers have continued to respond with an overwhelming level of support. Little doubt remains that we will be able to continue to publish a twice annual weddings magazine. Your support of the dozens of quality advertisers and wedding entrepreneurs who have successfully carved out their own niche in this fast-growing industry will help us to improve our effort. But to make future issues even more exciting and fun, we’d like you to share your real wedding stories with us for publication. From engagement to planning to your walk down the aisle and exotic wedding trips, we want to tell your wedding stories in NNY Living Weddings. Our next issue is scheduled to publish in mid-December in advance of the NNY Bridal Showcase, the region’s largest local bridal show, which is set for Sunday, Jan. 10, at the Dulles State Office Building in Watertown. Please contact me by mid-October if your “ultimate north country dream wedding” took place in the past two years and you would like to share your story and a few photos. Not all who contact me will be featured in print, but we will do our best to share your story on nnyliving.com. Email me at keysaman@wdt.net. We’d love to share your joyous story. KEN EYSAMAN is editor for NNY Magazines. Contact him at keysaman@wdt.net or 661-2399.

The dress, the guest list, the flowers,

the cake, the never-ending checklists: these will alway be a part of planning a wedding. How all these puzzle pieces come together is forever evolving. In a time when a good chunk of the population is virtually always connected, social media has become one of the most important tools in wedding planning. “That is key,” Terri M. Morris, owner and designer of Happily Ever After Florist & Bridal, Hammond, said. As a 15-year veteran in the wedding and event planning industry, with 30plus years of experience under her belt as a florist, Ms. Morris has seen the evolution firsthand. About five years ago, she noticed a few of the tech-savvier bridesto-be using social media when putting together their nuptials. Since then, every

year she sees more and more people utilizing the new tools. “Pinterest is the best thing out there,” she said. “It’s helpful for them to look for ideas. Plus, it’s helpful as a business for them to send us their Pinterest. So that’s been a good tool.” While some brides-to-be do still have wedding binders brimming with cutouts from magazines and printouts from websites, many women have Pinterest boards dedicated to the subject. In fact, according to a recent Washington Post article, there are 38 million boards on Pinterest devoted to weddings. Having that reference point is extremely helpful when coordinating with clients, Sarah V. Compo, owner of event planning company Soirée! NNY, said. “Nearly every bride, one of the first

things that they say when I ask them, ‘What do your decorations look like? What is your theme?’ They say, ‘Oh, you should look at my Pinterest board,” she explained. Soirée! NNY client Kate E. Hunt took advantage of the tool when planning her wedding. She and her husband got married at Robert Wehle State Park on June 19. The two have been a couple for nearly five years, and Mrs. Hunt has had a wedding board for about three of those years, since before their engagement. “But I would have made a board even if I wasn’t dating anyone,” she said with a laugh. When the wedding planning became a reality, Mrs. Hunt went through her board of “what-if”s and started to organize and narrow down her choices. She created

‘‘

There’s just so many ideas there. It’s easier using Pinterest than going to 15 different sites or going through magazines. Bride Kate E. Hunt, on social media tools she used to plan her wedding “But then I had to take a step back and say, ‘Take what you like away from it.’” Ms. Compo suggested using Instagram to circumvent the issue of intimidation

from those “picture-perfect” posed photos. While the Instagram photos won’t link the user to a website in the same way Pinterest will, the photos are taken and posted by real-life people in real-life weddings. Pinterest and Instagram aren’t the only useful tech tools for planning a wedding. Sara Carpenter just finished preparing for her August wedding, and used a whole slew of social media platforms to plan her celebrations. “Because my background is graphic design, everything had to be done by me,” she said, adding that Pinterest, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and Pandora were helpful in finding everything from useful checklists to the perfect soundtrack for the big day. multiple boards devoted to different topics such as flowers, hairstyles or cakes. “There’s just so many ideas there,” she said. “It’s easier using Pinterest than going to 15 different sites or going through magazines.” That deluge of ideas can easily lead to frustration for a woman trying to sort through the myriad of options for the big day. The user can begin to limit the choices by searching by key words, but even then the scrolling screen can go on for hours. Sarah C. MacFarland, a north country native, is planning her special day and has become familiar with the problems of Pinterest. “I started to get overwhelmed by it because I would see all these beautiful picture-perfect things,” she explained.

garden wedding, Ms. Carpenter could have easily had a “Pinterest wedding,” with trendy decorations pulled from the forever-growing “Weddings” category on the website. But after going to one too many traditional weddings, Ms. Carpenter made an effort to put her graphic design skills to use, pulling together bits and pieces from all across the web to create every aspect of her day. For example, every one of the overlapping flowers on her RSVPs was pulled from a different piece of art she found on Flickr and Pinterest and arranged by her. Social media-planning has inspired do-it-yourself celebrations. Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Hunt and Ms. MacFarland, all of whom listed Pinterest as a no. 1 source for inspiration, agree that idea sourcing from the web saved each of them a great deal of money. While the seeminglyendless parade of ideas can be intimidating, the website appears to be a favorite among brides-to-be. “You ask, ‘Do you do Pinterest?’” Ms. Norris said. “And the bride’s eyes light up.” LORNA OPPEDISANO is a staff writer and editorial assistant for NNY Magazines. Oswego County’s Salmon River offers two unique ceremony spaces BY JOLEENE MOODY

Not all brides and weddingS ARE created equal. The quest to find the perfect venue and create a one-of-a-kind wedding can be a challenge. But for north country brides, the quest for the most unique may be over. Along the Salmon River in Oswego County, two solutions for wedding venues are gaining traction and popularity, quickly

bringing more love, more vows and more wedding cake to the Pulaski area. It starts with the Kallet Theater in the tiny village of Pulaski. Reborn in 2013 after it originally opened in 1939, the space is rich in history. Before Myron J. Kallet put his name on the marquis, it was an opera house and later a movie house. It operated as a cinema and meeting space until it closed in 1984. A small businesses intermittently occupied the building,

including a yoga studio and auto parts store. It came back to life as the Kallet after father-and-son team Vince and Vinny Lobdell acquired the property at the end of 2011. Today the theater and conference center is considered one of the largest wedding venues in the north Central New York region. “We can seat more than 300 guests at dinner,” said Steven York, the Kallet’s Please see venues, page 16

Kallet Theater manager Steven J. York in the history room.

VENUES, from page 14 manager and event coordinator. “Lots of places tend to cap out at 150. We’re also fortunate because we can host a wedding and a reception in the same space. In the wedding industry, only 10 to 20 percent of brides and grooms marry at the reception location. We’re closer to 75 percent. We have a full kitchen, so we get a lot of folks who do it all right here.” Couples can get married on the stage or, in nice weather, on the back deck, overlooking the Salmon River. They can get married in the lobby, if they desire, or in the upper lounge. The inside potential of the refurbished theater is unlimited. Mr. York said the spotlight, often used for theatrical shows and bands, is sometimes used to showcase the bride. It’s a perk some brides enjoy when choosing to get married in the historic 76-year-old theater. “When a bride enters the room for the first time, we bring up a spotlight. We want the room to brighten when she enters it,” Mr. York said. TAILWATER LODGE Ten minutes down the road, also on the Salmon River, looms an Adirondack-style lodge that boasts large, majestic timbers at the entrance which greet guests. This is Tailwater Lodge, the newest hot spot in the town of Altmar. Tailwater Lodge also boasts a bit of history. Once an elementary school, the facility underwent an adaptive reuse makeover, a process that revives underused buildings. It opened its doors as the Tailwater Lodge in February 2014 under the ownership of the Woodbine Group, Syracuse. “It’s built with a kind of high peaks Adirondack feel,” said Tom Fernandez, director of business development for the Woodbine Group. “It’s something dif-

ferent for Oswego County. Throughout the space, all of the wood and trim is reclaimed timber, and all of our furniture is built by local craftsmen.” A high-quality restaurant and bar give locals a new dining choice when it comes to date night or a rehersal dinner. But for brides and grooms, the entire facility is allinclusive, and gives them everything they need for a perfect wedding experience. “As far as the wedding ceremony, some couples use the banquet room while others get married under the large timbers in the front,” Mr. Fernandez said. “If a couple wanted to get married down by the water, we could make that happen, too. We have the reception space and lodging for everyone when the day is over.” Some weddings at Tailwater take on a sportsman theme, which fits nicely with the feel of the place, while other weddings remain traditional, still embracing the rustic, metropolitan feel of the facility. But what if both the Kallet and the Tailwater appeal to you? Can you have your wedding cake and eat it, too? You certainly can. The venues have been collaborating since they opened. “We work very closely with the Kallet Theater, so if someone is getting married at the Kallet, we have rooms available for the wedding party and guests,” Mr. Fernandez said. “We really feel like we are on the same page with what they are producing and what we have at the Tailwater. There hasn’t been much development on the Salmon River in the past 20 years, so this collaboration allows us to help reinvigorate the area and show Northern New York what Oswego County is made of.” Mr. York agrees. “The Tailwater and Kallet are beacons in this community. They are the beginning of what we can do and where we can take it. This area is growing rapidly, and we are on this cusp of it.”

Easy tips for wedding invitations

A UTUMN 2015 | NNY LIVING WE DDI NGS

mid the flourishes of calligraphy and impressive paper stock is information that speaks to the importance of the day when two people will be joining their lives together. Guests will learn not only the time and the place of the wedding from the invitation, but also the formality of the event and the scope of the party that will follow. Wedding invitations often provide guests with a first glimpse of a wedding’s style. Invitations also may serve as the means by which distant friends and relatives find out about a couple’s pending nuptials if a formal announcement was not made. Amid the flourishes of calligraphy and impressive paper stock is information that speaks to the importance of the day when two people will be joining their lives together. Guests will learn not only the time and the place of the wedding from the invitation, but also the formality of the event and the scope of the party that will follow. Couples should keep certain things in mind as they begin to design their wedding invitations. n Have a good idea of your potential guest list. Before shopping for wedding invitations, it is key to have a strong idea of just how big the wedding will be and how many guests will be invited. This way you will know how many invitations you will need. Invitations vary in price, so cost may be a consideration if your guest list is extensive. n Decide on the formality of the wedding. Will you be hosting a black tie affair, or will it be a casual gathering at the

18

shore? Guests infer many things about the wedding from the invitations, which should match the formality of the event in style and the sentiments expressed. An ornate invitation written with classic wording suggests a more formal affair, while a whimsical invitation with less formal wording could indicate a more laid-back event. n Dare to be different by playing with invitation sizes and shapes. Rectangular cards are standard for wedding invitations, but you can explore your creativity by choosing more modern, artsy invitations. Circular invites or scalloped edges can add some whimsy to the wedding mood. Invitations that fold out or are embellished with ribbon or other decorations can be appealing. Just keep in mind that cards that are not the standard shape and size could be more costly to send. Always have the entire wedding invitation weighed and priced at the post office so you will know what the postage will cost. n Choose a legible font and text color. Your invitation may look beautiful, but it may prove ineffective if it is difficult to read. Do not risk guests misinterpreting the date or the location because they cannot read the writing on the invitation. Steer clear of pastel or yellow text colors, and remember to have a high contrast between the color of the invitation and the text you are using for easy reading. n Keep the invitation simple. It may be tempting to load the invitation with lots of information, but all you really need are the key pieces of information, such as the “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when.” Crowding the card will take away from its aesthetic appeal. Most stationers will

suggest a separate, smaller insert in the wedding invitation for the reception information and response card. Never put information such as where you are registered or “no kids allowed.” This is material better reserved for word of mouth or on a wedding Web site. n Do some math. It is important to know your dates so you can receive the invitations on time, mail them out, and give guests enough time to respond. A good rule of thumb is to mail out the invitations at least two months before the wedding. Have an RSVP date of no more than three to four weeks before the wedding, giving ample time to the caterers and accommodating anyone who procrastinates in sending in a response. You will need the final headcount in order to confirm seating arrangements and plan for centerpieces and favors. n Handwrite the envelopes. Your invitation will look more impressive if you address them by hand, rather than printing them off of a computer. If your handwriting is not very neat, consider hiring a professional calligrapher to write out your envelopes. n Make it easy for guests to respond. Be sure to place a stamp on the response card envelope and have that envelope already addressed with your home address so that guests will have no excuses not to mail a response back promptly. n Always order extra. Mistakes happen, and you may need to send out a few extra invitations that you hadn’t originally counted. Always order extra invitations just to be on the safe side. And don’t forget you will probably want to keep one as a keepsake for yourself. — (MS)

utdoor photos can look beautiful when couples are in the hands of accomplished photographers. Photography is a great way for couples to capture all the special moments that occur on their wedding days. Long after the final piece of wedding cake has been consumed, wedding albums remain to remind couples of all those moments that made their big day so special. Photography preferences differ from couple to couple, but when weather permits, many brides and grooms prefer to take photos outdoors. Mother Nature can provide some awe-inspiring backdrops, and such beauty comes at no extra cost. Couples using professional photographers should share their image preferences with their photographers, especially if outdoor photography is desired. Photographers may have to do a little more work to achieve great outdoor photographs, even visiting a site in advance of the big day to scout areas that can produce great photos. Scouting and preparation can involve seeing the landscape, examining the way the light shines on photo subjects and getting an accurate light reading on a meter to adjust flash accordingly. Photographers also will need to ensure there are no obstructions that will appear in the background of the photos. It’s also important for photographers to select locations that have shade. This way they can adjust the amount of light needed, rather than having to contend with the photo washing out from too much sunlight. There’s much a photographer can do in production to fine-tune photos, but the couple can help things along. Bring along some powder or makeup to touch up between photos. Warm weather can cause shininess or beads of sweat on the skin. A light dusting of powder can tame

Money-saving tips for any budget

W

A UTUMN 2015 | NNY LIVING WE DDI NGS

eddings can be expensive, and most brides and grooms need to establish a budget before they start planning the wedding so they can afford to get hitched. Many couples are now getting married later in life and paying most or all of the costs themselves, so it’s important to start budgeting sooner than later. The following tips will help you and your fiancé keep your costs down so you can stay within your wedding budget. They cover everything from the moment when you say “Yes” to the second you say “I do.” 1) SET A LONG ENGAGEMENT — There are two benefits to having an engagement of a year or longer. First, it allows you to spread costs over several paychecks. For example, if you get engaged this spring, you can choose one month to put a down payment on the reception hall, and another month for purchasing the

20

wedding dress and renting the tuxedo. A third month could be used for purchasing honeymoon trip tickets, and a fourth month for the photographer’s down payment. During your engagement you can also start putting money into a savings account so you aren’t strapped for cash immediately following your wedding. The second reason a long engagement makes financial sense is that many couples will set a seasonal theme for their weddings, wanting to decorate the wedding and reception hall in that theme. The best time to purchase decorations and supplies for seasonal events is immediately following those events, because stores discount them when it’s time to get them off the shelves. If you are planning a fall theme, for example, keep an eye on the shelves for these kinds of discounted decorations right after Thanksgiving or Halloween. Longer engagements allow couples to take advantage of a these seasonal discounts at least once, if not twice.

The Unparalleled Beauty of the Tug Hill Countryside and Vineyard is a Perfect Background for Your Destination Wedding.

2) COMBINE YOUR RESOURCES — A couple living in the same household can save hundreds of dollars monthly by combining expenses related to rent/ mortgage, utilities, groceries and even transportation. If you recently became engaged and are considering moving in together, calculate how much money you’ll be saving so you can apply those savings toward your wedding budget. During the moving process, you can save additional money. For example, when you combine your households, will you need two sets of dishes and furniture? Probably not. Perhaps you can even host a garage sale to sell the items you don’t need duplicates of; then you can put that money toward a wedding-related item. As you plan your big move, be sure to check out great moving services like Penske Truck Rental, which offers AAA and other great discounts to help soon-to-be newlyweds save money on moving costs. 3) Find the best deals — If you’ve always dreamed of getting married under a tent at a local park, you might discover that tent rental far exceeds your budget - especially if you live in an urban setting. This is where the Internet can be very helpful. Sometimes it’s cheaper to rent equipment like tents, folding chairs, wedding canopies and other decorations from businesses that are located outside of your community. To save even more, drive your personal car to the community where you’ll be renting the equipment, rent a Penske truck to transport all the equipment to where your wedding will be, and then return the equipment in the truck once you’re finished with it. Then you can simply pick up your personal car for the drive home. If you have friends around for the wedding, ask them to be responsible for this part of the wedding so you can concentrate on other plans. When you and your loved one begin planning your wedding, keep your budget-balancing stress to a minimum with these helpful money-saving tips. — (MS)

can produce richer colors and pleasing shadows, making photos even more appealing. If the clouds are just passing, photographers may wait until a cloud passes over the sun to provide just the right amount of light filter. Couples may want to change into comfortable footwear as they traverse the landscape to get into perfect portraiture locations. This will help keep their fancier shoes clean, and photos can be cropped to hide feet. Bring along some refreshments when posing for photos, as it can be tiring. Couples can take frequent breaks as the photographer adjusts his or her camera for the next shot. Staying hydrated will keep skin looking supple and ensure that everyone feels refreshed when it’s time to return to the party. Not every family member will be able to join the happy couple for outdoor photos. Elderly relatives or those who have mobility issues may find it difficult to stand in the sun or make their away across certain landscapes. Arrange for indoor photoshoots with guests who can’t handle the outdoors. — (MS)

Create a dream shabby chic wedding

W

A UTUMN 2015 | NNY LIVING WE DDI NGS

edding trends come and go, driven by many cultural influences, but few are as enduring and romantic as shabby chic/ shabby glam. With its perfect combination of elegance and softness, bright sparkles and gentle hues, a shabby chic wedding complements the individuality and beauty of brides of every age and walk of life. And, thanks to many rental stores increasing their inventory of shabby chic items, it’s also one of the easiest and most fun wedding themes to create. Vintage wedding gowns, repurposed items and a wide inventory of thematic rental items can all work together to create a shabby chic wedding that is unique, memorable and affordable. To create a wedding theme that is the perfect marriage of shabby and glam follow these three simple steps: flowers and lace — Lace isn’t just for your wedding gown and flowers aren’t just for your bouquet. Touches of lace added throughout the ceremony and reception underscore the air of nostalgic

22

elegance that’s essential to shabby chic. This can be as easy as adding lace touches to wedding invitations or using pieces of lace as placemats or coasters on reception tables. Or, it can be as grand as a lace tent liner that evokes a romantic, bygone era. Florals are key to creating a shabby chic look. Whether the bride and groom stand beneath a bower of pastel blooms while exchanging vows, or floral accents throughout the bride’s couture, flowers and floral patterns lend romance and grace to every aspect of a shabby chic wedding. Light the way — Light plays an important role in any shabby chic themed event. For weddings, vintage-looking chandeliers, candelabras and hurricane lamps act both as decorative items and sources of romantic light. It’s easy to add thematic lighting to any wedding, even if your reception will be in an ordinary hall or tent. Rental companies offer an array of lighting options that can be temporarily outfitted to any venue. Adorn tables with classic silver candelabra or add a stunning crystal chandelier to an outdoor tent. Layers of texture — The pleasing

union of diverse colors and textures is at the heart of a shabby chic wedding. Soft colors are the perfect foil for sparkles, and distressed wood complements the beauty of aged metals like silver and pewter. All these elements come together to evoke the grace and comfort of bygone times. Look for creative ways to harmoniously incorporate these touches into your wedding. For example, display your wedding cake, adorned with real flowers, atop a rustic wooden table. Decorate an antique metal birdcage with lace and ribbon and use it as a holder where reception guests can deposit cards for the bride and groom. Add petite crystal and pearl accents to bouquets and centerpieces. For a rustic food table, rent wooden barrels, top with an aged wooden plank, and present food on vintage serving plates. Finally, look for inspiration online. Resources like Pinterest, Etsy and theknot yield a wealth of ideas, and you can browse photos of other weddings and bridal creations to find the perfect look for your shabby chic wedding. — (MS)

ain showers on a wedding day may bring good luck, but they are seldom coveted. However, a different type of shower altogether is often highly anticipated and can help couples feel like they’re one in a million. Wedding showers are gift-giving parties held for couples about to get married. The custom began in the 19th century and continues to present day, primarily in North America and Australia. Guests traditionally “shower” the bride-to-be with all the necessities — and some fun extras — that she will need after she ties the knot. These gifts will help the soon-to-be-married couple establish a home together. Bridal showers are steeped in tradition, but today’s bridal showers continue to veer off the beaten path. Nowadays, bridal showers feature fun and games much like a party having nothing to do with a wedding. TheKnot.com, a website that aims to help couples plan their weddings and all the events leading up to the big day, identifies these key trends in modern bridal showers. couples’ SHOWERS — Modern couples who like to be all-inclusive are now planning bridal showers that cater to mixed audiences. Dubbed a “couple shower,” these parties include female and male friends and relatives. Gifts are still the main focus of the event, but they’re varied and include guy-friendly items within the mix of household goods. POWER SHOWERS — Many are familiar with the terms “man cave” and “bromance,” but few may know that there are now wedding showers geared entirely around the groom. Known as “power showers,” these events focus on the groom-to-be, who is showered with a bevy of gadgets and power tools that are certain to stock his future garage. The parties are decidedly more testosterone-friendly and can include golf outings, poker nights or action movie flicks as possible themes. destination/activity SHOWERS — Rather than having guests hang around a restaurant watching gift after gift get unwrapped, some bridal parties opt to throw an activity shower. These showers are focused around a particular activity. For example, ladies may be treated to a day at the spa. Other ideas include horseback riding at a stable or a day at the ballpark. Because hosting an activity shower for dozens of people may get expensive, these types of showers may be reserved for only your closest friends and family members. It is customary for a bridal shower to take place before a wedding. But new trends have emerged that are shaking up the way showers are planned and held. — (MS)

lockwise from top, brides love unique detail shots of their special day. This ring shot captures a maple leaf, which is a popular north country tree. The rain underneath reminds us that our weather can be very unpredictable. But this bride and her wedding party had their umbrellas ready at the Gran-View on the River in Ogdensburg. This photo brings together four generations of commitment and dedication to marriage and is accented with a family heirloom. The small Bible has been passed down from the bride’s great-grandmother for this summer shot at Brookside Cemetery, Watertown. Many women remember their first wedding experience as young girls, dreaming of their own wedding day. This is one of many special memories I am sure these four cousins will share.
