Popular, modern first dance songs

A

couple’s first dance as man and wife is a cherished wedding tradition. While the first dance can help set a positive tone for the reception, it also can negatively impact the festivities if a poor song is chosen. Couples may feel pressure to choose the perfect song. Yes, this is a song that the couple has selected to represent their love for each other, but it also should be one that will speak to the masses and can be thoroughly enjoyed by all. Couples want to avoid a song that does not seem to fit with the festivities. For those couples who need a little musical inspiration, turn to many of the modern hits you’re bound to hear on the radio which may help you to shine in that first dance. n “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri: “Twi-hard” fans enjoyed this romantic song during the pivotal wedding scene between Bella Swan and Edward

Cullen in the popular “Twilight” movie “Breaking Dawn.” Couples looking to recreate the magic of these star-crossed lovers can embrace Perri’s delicate tone and tender lyrics. n “All of Me” by John Legend: It’s been hard to escape this popular love song by R&B artist John Legend. An ode Legend wrote to his wife, this song has

rock and acoustic guitar work blended with catchy lyrics. Also an accomplished surfer, Johnson’s work is enjoyed by many but may be especially prized by couples who want to their reception to be a laid back affair full of fun and whimsy. n “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz: Another acoustic ditty, this song has a country influence and talks about not giving up and staying in a relationship for the long haul. n “I Don’t Dance” by Lee Brice: Speaking of country influences, couples who want a little twang in their first dances can choose Brice’s breakthrough hit. Romantic lyrics about spinning his partner around in circles despite not liking to dance illustrates what one partner will do for the other when in love. Couples can make that first moment on the dance floor a special experience by choosing modern classics for their first dances. — MS Features

quickly become a popular choice for a couple’s first dance. n “I Choose You” by Sara Bareilles: This peppy song by singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles is a good choice for couples who prefer being nontraditional. It’s faster paced and less sentimental than many other wedding songs. n “Better Together” by Jack Johnson: Johnson is known primarily for his soft

1000 ISLANDS A TOP-RATED NORTH COUNTRY WEDDINGS DESTINATION

Crystal blue waters. Beautiful vistas and landscapes that greet guests and enhance the photographs of your dream wedding. A sense of past, present and future, marking a moment in time that you know. You’ve reached your destination wedding location. Rather than heading for the beaches of the tropics or the historic venues of Europe though, why not consider the St. Lawrence River and its 1000 Islands region for your fairy-tale wedding setting? For years, the area has been a tourism gem for Northern New York, attracting travelers from across the globe who want to take in its grandeur. Yet, it still feels like

a fresh locale for a wedding industry that is booming with entrepreneurs. Large-scale river attractions, such as Boldt and Singer castles, have capitalized on becoming premiere event locations for quite some time, hosting thousands of weddings in the past few years. Immaculately kept and groomed with several interior grounds options, both castle locations boast a gorgeous, less stressful day for a wedding party and its guests, as well as those involved with the production, including caterers and photographers. The history of Boldt Castle is based on the foundation of love and, fittingly, it is located on Heart Island. Making the con-

nection to weddings was an obvious move for the facility, which has been the setting for weddings for more than 15 years. While you may have an ideal timeline for your wedding, these places book quickly and often, despite the castles being available for events nearly every day, but with a few exceptions. According to Mr. Nate Sourwine, Boldt Castle facility operations manager, it isn’t uncommon for the castle to host three weddings in one day. The process is firstcome, first-served and it can fill up. “Doing a wedding at Boldt Castle is very easy, we’re practiced at it. You don’t have to put in the hours and hours of planning,”

Newlyweds relax on the shore of Heart Island at Boldt Castle after their ceremony. Island weddings like this have grown in popularity in recent years and attract brides and grooms from across New York and southeastern Ontario.

Mr. Sourwine said. “We haven’t had any displeased brides in recent memory.” Most locations have requirements, such as reservation fees, staff limitations and time stipulations, many of which are readily available for review on their websites. Arriving at the castles is made simpler by daily boat tours to and from the mainlands of America and Canada. But for those looking to have a more involved hand with their wedding, there are several options for an island wedding within a structured budget. KEEP IT SIMPLE “For me, it’s God’s creation,” St. Lawrence River native Kelly Rusho-Boyer said. “This is God’s natural church.” It was, for Mrs. Rusho-Boyer, the only place she could imagine marrying her husband, Brian Boyer. Along the shores of the St. Lawrence River, where she grew up and lived for most of her life, she created a wedding full of personal touches. “I wanted to have a simple river wedding. Being on an island, being on the river,” Mrs. Rusho-Boyer said. “It was more of a spiritual thing.” Mrs. Rusho-Boyer’s wedding was held on Round Island, the location a gift of a family friend. Mrs. Anna Larson Von Muehlen had her big day at her family’s home on Grindstone Island, a straight shot across the American channel from the mainland of Clayton. She would recommend an island wedding to anyone, since no two river weddings are ever the same. “So much of the outcome of the wedding is due to what the river feels like doing. Will it be rough [waters]? Rainy? Windy? You’re truly at the whim of nature, which is a beautiful thing.” For each woman, having an island wedding was a considerable undertaking that presented several challenges. But each say repeating that one mantra, “keep it simple,” made everything easier. With the help of several local businesses, obstacles such as transportation, wash facilities and weather backup plans, just to name a few, can be overcome. Mrs. Rusho-Boyer and Mrs. Von Muehlen used Clayton Island Boat Tours as transportation to and from the islands. Clayton Island Boat Tours vessels seat about 57 at capacity, so expect to make more than one trip if your guest list is large.

Top island destinations Singer Castle WHERE: Dark Island, Chippewa Bay HISTORY: Originally owned by Frederick Gilbert Bourne, he called it a hunting island retreat for his family. Singer Castle was designed by famous American architect Ernest Flagg. Between 1902 and 1904, tons of granite was mined from nearby Oak Island and Italian stonecutters were hired to shape the stone. It’s namesake is Singer Sewing, Bourne’s employer at the time.

be able to help answer questions about the area. Several hotels and motels are available in nearby ports for those coming into town, as well as restaurants for dinners and luncheons. Consider using local water transportation services for fun arrivals to your ceremony or marinas for a launching and gathering point for guests and services. Location is also key to planning. Renting island cottages and properties to visitors has been a longtime practice for many landowners. A simple Google search

reveals websites like homeaway.com, vrbo. com or vacationrentals.com that list hundreds of potential island rental properties that can host your wedding. An island wedding is an event you are sure to reflect on with a sense of satisfaction, whether awash in the architectural glory of castles or standing on a quiet beach. BOLDT Castle WHERE: Boldt Castle, Heart Island, Alexandria Bay HISTORY: Probably the most famous tragic love story known in the region, George Boldt bought the island and constructed the castle in tribute to his wife, Louise. However, immediately after she died, Mr. Boldt telegraphed workers on the island to halt construction. Renovation projects and an extensive revitalization program by the 1000 Islands Bridge Authority have created a beautifully recognized popular international attraction.

The allure of the river is intoxicating, which makes the idea of an island event all the more exciting for those who plan to attend. Unintended consequences? Perhaps, but not insurmountable. “We didn’t expect so many out-of-town folks to accept our invitation,” Mrs. Von Muehlen said. “We filled the Clayton Island Boat Tours boat twice.” Consulting with owners can help you gauge whether their spot is ideal for your needs. How to pull off traditional or flash mob wedding dancing

14

BY KRIS RUSHO Lindsey Rule had started, like many do these days, by watching YouTube videos of couples learning to dance. “I enjoyed watching them. I also wanted more than just my husband and me swaying back and forth,” she said. “That’s so boring for everyone watching.” The fear of dancing in front of people is nothing new. Most of us go through life feeling uncoordinated and gangly just trying to put one foot in front of the other. But when it comes to weddings,

dancing is seen as an unspoken requirement. Whether it’s the first couples dance, dancing with the mother or father or creating your own experience, dancing can sometimes feel like an awkward junior high school dance. But for couples like Lindsey and Brandon Rule, making the effort was a worthwhile investment. Their instructor, based in New York City — the couple lived in Brooklyn before returning to the Watertown area — was patient and had a plan already in place for them. “The experience was really great. If we

had the money now, we would still be taking lessons,” Mrs. Rule said. Beyond traditional dancing, many couples are taking charge of their own two-steps by incorporating wedding parties, groups or concocting an amazing online video-worthy waltz with their parents. According to Mrs. Shereen Daly, director of InMotion School of Dance, Watertown, flash dancing has become popular thanks to the Internet and the creativity and fun involved with such a project. “I’ve seen videos of people doing

them locally and videos that have circulated on a viral level from all over the country,” Mrs. Daly said. “I personally was involved with an organized ‘flash dance’ just last year.” But much like taking the time to learn your own moves, don’t be fooled into thinking that they can be choreographed and set to music and rehearsed just a few days before the ceremony. Mrs. Daly stresses the need for preparation and focus when putting your heart into something so personal. “I think the biggest thing is for someone to consider who will be performing it when they create the dance and to have a group of committed individuals. You may not have a chance to practice it together so doing your homework before the big day is key.” Some wedding flash dance videos receive millions of views and there are enough of them online that there are actual “Top 10 Wedding Flash Mob Dance” lists. Sometimes, flash dances are done as a thank you from the bride and groom. Other times, they can be done for a person to be more goof that Fred Astaire, letting their sense of humor take over and offering your dance to the masses. That is, if you’re into making your moves public. Sharing your funky moves with the world is one thing, but a personal tribute to the person you’re going to marry may just be a matter of putting your best foot forward in front of a few dozen guests. Mrs. Daly said she still gets an occasional request or two from hapless couples asking for help learning to dance. “I think there is absolutely a market for both traditional wedding dances for couples as well as the newer trend toward ‘flash dances.’ For years we have been fielding the occasional phone call or email from couples wanting someone to teach them how to dance for their wedding or wanting to have a wedding dance choreographed in ballroom style,” she said. “I think there is still something very elegant about a husband and wife performing a traditional ballroom-style dance for their first dance. I think it might be a little while until we see any fade in the group ‘flash dances’ because they tend to be fun and engaging for those attending the receptions.”

Miranda Ledwith, Ogdensburg, shows off pink cowgirl boots on her wedding day. Nontraditional attire is a growing trend for many brides and grooms. Mrs. Ledwith and her husband, Donald, worked with the staff at Sposa Bella, Canton, to design a personalized formal wear line.

When Miranda and Donald Ledwith of Ogdensburg got married last September along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, the attire for the entire wedding party “reflected a mixture of who we both were,” said Mrs. Ledwith. “I’m a big fan of makeup and shopping,” she joked. “I’m more of the princess type.” But her husband, Donald, “is all about the outdoors — hunting, fishing, camping,” Mrs. Ledwith said. The bride, a veterinarian technician, and the groom, a millwright, worked with the staff at Sposa Bella in Canton to create

a formal wear look that reflected their “rustic theme” wedding. The ceremony was held behind the Ogdensburg Public Library in a small park complete with a gazebo. Although Mrs. Ledwith still went with a traditional couture wedding gown by designer Maggie Sottero, she accented it with a brown sash and cowgirl boots to reflect her husband’s interest in the outdoors. Not just any regular pair, however, but fuchsia-colored sequined cowgirl boots. Her bridesmaids wore short, ivory laced-dresses with cowgirl boots as well — they wore the traditional brown color boots. The groom wore a white shirt with

a burlap colored-vest and blue jeans. His groomsmen wore white shirts, tan pants and suspenders. The wedding attire “really reflected both our personalities” and provided a “light-hearted and fun” atmosphere for the wedding, Mrs. Ledwith said. “We are seeing a lot more brides stepping outside the box,” said Angela M. Thomas, manager of Sposa Bella. Part of that trend is the result of television shows such as “Say Yes to the Dress” and “My Fair Wedding,” which sometimes feature nontraditional wedding dresses, along with the website Pinterest, she said. “We’ve seen the rustic weddings done

with lace and burlap and held in barns or backyards, and we’ve seen Disney Princess-themed weddings,” she added. That’s not to say, however, that the traditional white wedding dress has disappeared, although more women are opting for ivory, Ms. Thomas said. “But we still see a lot of traditional weddings,” she added. Another trend has been colored dresses. “Sometimes ivory or white doesn’t agree with the bride’s skin tone,” Ms. Thomas said. “I will say that we hear a lot about lace and vintage styles; everyone seemed to be looking for that recently,” the manager said. “The north country is a unique place with a lot of unique people and we are seeing weddings that definitely reflect those unique personalities.” Sposa Bella was opened in 2001 at 81 Main Street in downtown Canton by Michele Scanlin. Her daughter, Erin Alguire, is the owner. While some north country brides are increasingly opting for nontraditional dresses such as colored gowns and those with shorter hemlines, there have been a few who have even chosen camouflage. Once a fabric reserved for military uniforms and hunting jackets, camouflage has slowly been working its way into formal wear lines, according Kathleen B. Lettiere, owner of A Touch of Grace, 440 Coffeen St., Watertown. . “We have had a lot of interest in it lately,” said Mrs. Lettiere, who opened her store in 1996. A Touch of Grace started carrying camouflage wedding gowns this past fall. There are traditional dark green and brown cameo patterns — real tree branches and leaves against a solid background — along with patterns in pink, red and orange. While some brides may opt for a full camouflage pattern gown, others may choose a white gown with some camouflage trim. Camouflage dresses are even available for bridesmaids, and can be paired with

WINTER 2015 | NNY L IVING W EDDIN GS

uests and well-wishers expect to see at least one cake at wedding receptions. But wedding guests should not be surprised if they attend a wedding and notice two cakes sharing the spotlight on the dessert table. Groom’s cakes have existed for generations but have fallen out of favor in many parts of North America since the 1970s. Now groom’s cakes are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. A groom’s cake traditionally represents something masculine, providing a contrast to the oft-feminine features, such as floral bouquets and frilly gowns, that dominate many weddings. Groom’s cake designs often reflect a particular hobby or interest of the groom’s. Historically, groom’s cakes are chocolate, a sharp contrast to traditional wedding cakes, which tend to be vanilla and white. Tradition once called for single women at the wedding to take home a slice of the groom’s cake to sleep with under their pillows. It was believed the cake would help them have sweet dreams of the man they would eventually marry. Women today are likely no longer snuggling up to fondant and mousse cake slices at night, and wedding cakes are no longer relegated to vanilla cake with vanilla icing, which may account for the waning popularity of groom’s cakes. Yet with wedding cake bakers showing off their creative prowess on television or through their own artistic bakery displays, it’s no wonder that couples looking for something unique are once again embracing the tradition of groom’s cakes. Couples who are mulling whether or not to add a groom’s cake to their menus should consider the following tips.

18

n Make sure it is highly personal. Groom’s cakes typically reference hobbies, affiliations or interests of the groom. Some men may want their cake to showcase the logo of their favorite professional sports team, while others may want a cake inspired by a favorite superhero. n Involve the groom in the process. Despite the name, groom’s cakes may not always involve the groom. A cake may be designed or selected by the groom’s bride-to-be or his mother. Some forwardthinking brides may want to encourage their grooms-to-be to select their own cakes and offer input on their designs. n Find a bakery that has experience in whimsical cakes. Groom’s cakes are very often intricate structures and sculptures. The groom’s cake may be more labor-intensive than the traditional wedding cake, so couples may want to shop around for a cake chef with the experience to pull off the design they desire.

n Experiment with flavor combinations. Because the groom’s cake is all about that special guy, the flavor of the cake should be centered around what he would enjoy. The sky is the limit on flavors and can include traditional chocolate, candy barinspired flavors, coffee, coconut, or even a bacon-infused cake. n Consider serving the groom’s cake at the rehearsal. Some couples prefer to serve the groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner rather than having two cakes at the wedding. Guests may not be able to fit two slices of cake after a large wedding meal, so serving the groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner may be the best of both worlds. The bride — and her cake — typically steal the show at the average wedding. Therefore, a groom’s cake can be a special touch that allows the groom to bask in his own wedding-day spotlight. — MS Features

“hunter safety” orange sashes, Mrs. Lettiere said. “These dresses can still be quite feminine,” she said. “They have a soft feel to them because they are made of lightweight chiffon.” A bride may choose camouflage because her groom is an outdoorsman. Or she herself may be an outdoorswoman, Mrs. Lettiere said. “It’s usually someone who loves nature and loves the outdoors,” she said. Camouflage is not only an option for the bride, but for the groom as well, who can incorporate pieces such as camouflage vest with a traditional tuxedo, Mrs. Lettiere said. The interest in camouflage is not surprising in light of the increasing number of couples choosing to have a more “relaxed feel” to their wedding ceremonies, she added. Camouflage “has really caught on” in St. Lawrence County as well, Ms. Thomas said. The store had previously set up an entire window display showing how camouflage can be incorporated into many aspects of the wedding party attire, she said. They even carry camouflage and burlap garter belts in stock. “We’ve had brides who do hunt and others who don’t, but are adding the camouflage anyway simply because they love their soon-to-be husbands just that much,” Ms. Thomas said. The length of wedding gowns has been varying, another reflection of a recent trend, said Mrs. Lettiere. “Short dresses have been popular this year,” she said. While many brides are still sticking to the traditional long white or ivory gown, overall most women have become a little more relaxed when planning their wedding day, Mrs. Lettiere said. “They are even becoming more relaxed about what their bridesmaids will be wearing,” she said. For example, some brides are letting their bridesmaids pick their own style of dress that works best on their body type, but keeping all the dresses in the wedding party with the same color, fabric and manufacturer, Mrs. Lettiere said. “They recognize that one style may not work with all body types,” she said.

How to choose your groomsmen

G

WINTER 2015 | NNY L IVING W EDDIN GS

rooms-to-be face many decisions regarding their pending nuptials, but few may prove as delicate as choosing the groomsmen for the big day. Friends who expect to be groomsmen may be disappointed if they are not ultimately chosen, while brothers may feel left out if they are not asked to walk a bridesmaid up the aisle. Choosing groomsmen should not be taken lightly. Grooms-to-be who are facing some difficult choices with regard to that decision can follow a few pointers to ensure they make the right call. n Pick a number. Before you even consider who you want your groomsmen to be, speak to your fiancée about how many bridesmaids she hopes to have. The number of groomsmen and bridesmaids typically matches, so your fiancée’s intentions may make your decision a lot easier. For example, if you have two brothers and several friends you’re considering, but your fiancée only intends to have a maid of honor and one bridesmaid, then you can just ask both of your brothers to serve as groomsmen. Friends are unlikely be offended if family members get the nod ahead of them, so discuss numbers with your fiancée before you begin trimming your list of candidates. If you already have an idea of who you want to be your groomsmen but your choices outnumber your fiancée’s, see if she has anyone else she can add to her party so no one is left out. n Choose the best man for the job. Many grooms pick a brother to serve as their best man, and while that’s a nice sentiment, it’s important that grooms rec-

ognize that being a best man carries with it some responsibility. A best man will organize the bachelor party, give a toast at the wedding and handle any postwedding duties, such as returning the tuxes or arranging for the newlyweds’ transportation to the airport. If your brother is already incredibly busy or if you doubt he is up to the task of being a best man, then you might be better off asking him to be a groomsman and finding another best man who’s more capable of juggling the numerous responsibilities that come with being best man. n Don’t forget your fiancée’s family. While you should not feel pressured to pick anyone in particular as your best man, if your fiancée has any brothers, ask her if she had her heart set on including any of them in the bridal party. Some

brides want their brothers to be groomsmen, so discuss this with your fiancée before asking anyone to line up beside you. This discussion can go both ways as well, as you can ask your bride-to-be to include a favorite sister in her bridal party if you so desire. n Confirm their availability. When asking friends or family members to be groomsmen, it’s best to ensure they can actually make it to the ceremony. This is a concern for grooms who are planning a destination wedding or those getting married in their fiancée’s hometown and not their own, as some guests, including potential groomsmen, may not be able to afford to attend an overseas or faraway ceremony. When asking, explain the situation to them, and let them know you fully understand if they cannot commit to being a groomsmen due to travel or financial concerns. Confirm their availability as soon as possible, as you don’t want to be down one groomsman come your big day. For those who you want to be a groomsmen but are unable to make it, it can be a nice gesture to buy them a groomsmen gift as a token of your appreciation for their friendship. Many grooms face difficult decisions when choosing their groomsmen. But there are ways to make such decisions a lot easier than they may seem. — MS Features

Hot trends in wedding day cuisine

O

nce a couple has officially tied the knot, the newly recognized man and wife and all of their guests will retire to a party room where they can mingle, dance and enjoy a good meal. In the past, standard fare like prime rib and roasted chicken dominated wedding menus. But today’s weddings cater to people of various culinary tastes, and couples and their guests can expect more upscale and creative cuisine to be rolled out for wedding receptions. The following are a handful of the more popular trends with regard to wedding cuisine. Miniature bites Many people say good things come in small packages, and when it comes to miniature versions of favorite foods, they may be right. Instead of large meals that fill guests up fast, they can munch on smaller bites of their favorite dishes. How about a piece of meatloaf topped with whipped mashed potatoes? A cherry tomato with a small piece of mozzarella cheese makes a mini caprese salad. Turning favorite foods into bite-sized adventures can add a touch of whimsy to the reception. Breakfast for dinner Some couples are circumventing high price tags for their weddings by choosing to hold the festivities at less expensive times of day. Brunch-themed weddings are a big hit with those who would much rather dine on a stack of pancakes than a dish of pasta. Omelet stations, croissants and a bevy of other breakfast table fare can be enjoyed any time of the day.

Gourmet comfort food People love familiar comfort foods, but now gourmet comfort foods are shaking up wedding receptions. Mac-and-cheese with gouda and brie or chicken pot pie with a puff-pastry crust are a few offerings that can add glamour to down-home cooking. Food with a show Instead of passed foods or buffet sta-

tions, couples are opting to make food an experience for guests. An oyster bar with a chef serving fresh seafood or a dessert master whipping up flambé is a feast for the eyes and mouth. Interesting buffet stations Keep guests on their toes with various meal stations. A bountiful display of artisanal cheeses, fruits and breads will be a cheese lover’s dream. These stations also can be appetizing focal points around the room and ensure all guests get a bite of what they like best. Family style Rustic and informal weddings have grown in popularity. Rather than food being brought to the guests or participants

Nontraditional ‘fake’ cakes Instead of a multi-tiered cake or the cupcake fad that is starting to fizzle, couples are now opting for something new. Desserts that mimic the look of cake, but aren’t quite that combination of sponge and frosting are trending. Crepes, pies, cookies, and doughnuts are acceptable and can add a creative spark to the cakecutting ceremony. When offered along with dessert stations, guests can certainly get their fill of sweet delights. Vegan and gluten-free options Chances are one or more people attending the reception will be on a restricted diet. Rather than relegate these guests to dining on side dishes and patchwork meals, certain couples are building entire offerings around vegan and gluten-free foods. Couples are getting creative with their food and beverage offerings at their weddings. Guests never know which culinary wonders they will encounter as they gather to wish the newlyweds well.

What to ask your photographer

S

ome moments are simply just too important to trust to a camera phone. Your wedding will be one of the most memorable times of your life and no one can capture it better than a professional photographer. So how do you find the right one? As you begin the interview process, here are 10 questions to help you determine if you’ve found the best photographer for your wedding. Does the photographer have a PORTFOLIO you can review? Reviewing sample work allows you to see the photographer’s strengths and weaknesses — don’t fool yourself, every photographer has them. You’ll also be able to get an idea of their style. Are they formal with an eye for the perfect picture or do they love to capture the hidden moments when no one is looking? Look for images that you can see yourself in. Think of three words that describe you and share those with your photographer. Every photographer has a style and reviewing their gallery can help you determine if theirs is right for you. What is the photographer’s primary working style? Some photographers are orderly and operate like wedding planners. Others prefer to sit back and let the events of the wedding unfold. It’s important that you find someone who can understand and meet your expectations. Discuss this ahead of time and ask away, so that you understand how well the photographer’s working style matches your own.

provide you with priceless images. Is the photographer available for an engagement session? An engagement session does more than provide you with priceless images together before you get married. It’s also

your first opportunity to work with your photographer and develop a relationship that will allow you to be completely at ease on your big day. Use this session to confirm if the photographer is indeed the right person to capture your wedding. Will the photographer create a detailed shot list? This list will ensure no important photo is missed during the commotion and excitement of the big day. You should be able to create that list together, add to the list leading up to the day and have a copy of that list the day of. Take an honest look at what images really matter and fill your photographer in on situations he or she might need to be aware of in order to prevent awkward moments, and to ensure that he or she can get the shots that matter most. What kind of lighting will be used? Whether you have an indoor or outdoor

F E AT U R E S wedding, you’ll want to make sure your photographer has professional grade lighting equipment to deliver the images your wedding deserves. Does the photographer have backup equipment? You’ve prepared contingency plans for every other aspect of your wedding; your photographer should as well. A true professional photographer won’t miss your perfect shot because of a technology issue. He or she will always bring one or two backup cameras, lenses, flashes, additional lighting equipment, extra memory cards, and batteries. Does the photographer have liability insurance? Accidents happen at weddings and if one of your guests trips over your photographer’s light stand, it’s good to know you both are protected. Your reception venue may even ask the photographer to submit a certificate of liability ahead of time. Will there be one photographer or two working at your wedding? A second shooter increases the probability that no shot will be missed, especially if you are having a large wedding. If there will be two photographers, ask to meet them both to get a feel for their personalities and how well they might blend in on your big day.

Factors to consider when choosing your wedding photography package

C

ouples must make a host of important decisions when planning their weddings. Some decisions, such as choosing a venue to host the reception, require more effort and research on the part of couples than others. One decision that couples must make carefully concerns the photography package they choose for their ceremonies and receptions. Wedding photographers play a big role on a couple’s big day, and it’s important that men and women about to tie the knot consider a host of factors before choosing the men or women they will ultimately task with visually documenting their wedding days. ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOT: Couples who want to do an engagement photoshoot may want to negotiate such a shoot into their photography package. Some agencies include engagement shoots in their packages while others do not. If the engagement photoshoot is on your list of needs, then look for an agency that provides such services as part of its packages or agencies willing to include the engagement photoshoot for free or for an added fee. PARTY SIZE: The number of people on the guest list should factor into your choice of wedding photographer. If your guest list is especially large, then you might want to consider hiring

two or more photographers to document the day. Many agencies offer separate packages for couples who want one photographer and couples who prefer two or more photographers, so it pays to examine the price differences between such packages to see if more than one photographer can fit into your budget. Couples with relatively small guests lists can typically get by with just a single photographer to document their ceremonies and receptions. TRAVEL: When discussing a wedding photography package, ask how much travel is included in the package. This is important for couples whose ceremonies are in a separate location from their receptions. If the distance between the ceremony site and the reception venue is considerable, you may have to pay extra for the photographer to travel between both sites. While a reasonable amount of travel is typically included in a photography package, it’s best that you confirm this prior to signing an agreement. Videography: Many photography agencies also offer videography services in some of their wedding packages. Videography can be a great way for couples to document their wedding days, and it can be fun for couples to watch their wedding videos with their families down the road. — MS Features

What will happen to the images after your wedding? Will your images be backed up to a hard drive or the cloud once processed? How long will your photographer keep the images afterward? Will they be kept for a couple of years or dumped immediately? If you have any concerns about losing your photos, knowing what the photographer plans to do with your images after your wedding is important.

When will you get your photos? No, you won’t get your pictures the day after; no photographer can deliver that quickly. It’s a good idea, though, to get a general idea of the timeline ahead of time. You might even be able to agree on getting a couple of images ready for social media use very quickly. But obtaining your photos will likely take several weeks. To help with the wait, some photographers will send you a sneak peak with a few images. Just ask ahead of time! You won’t be able to see everything that happens during your wedding day. The right photographer will capture moments you never knew existed. — BPT Features

How to build a wedding registry

M

any once-popular wedding traditions have fallen by the wayside. But one wedding tradition that has withstood the test of time is the wedding registry. Couples about to tie the knot still build a wedding registry so their guests know what to buy them as wedding gifts. This saves guests the trouble of agonizing over what to buy the couple getting hitched and also ensures that couples won’t receive two or more of the same item. Building a registry can be fun, as couples can act like kids in a candy store and add items they might otherwise not be able to afford. But there is a method to building a registry that can ensure the process of giving and receiving gifts is comfortable and convenient for everyone involved. n Choose a national chain. Many stores will allow couples to establish a registry, but it behooves couples to choose a national chain or chains for their registry. A local boutique store might sell several items you would love to have, but that

store may only be accessible to guests who live nearby, and such stores may be more expensive than larger national chains that can afford to charge less for similar products. Choosing a national chain ensures all of your guests will be able to access and purchase a gift from your registry, and make those purchases without breaking the bank. n Choose a store with an online presence. When choosing a store for your registry, it also helps to choose a store with an online presence that’s user-friendly. Ideally, pick an online retailer you have already had positive experiences with. This not only will make it easier for your guests, but also for you should you decide to return items down the road. n Choose more than one store. You also want to choose more than one store

when building a registry. Some guests will prefer to shop in-store rather than online, so you want to give them some options so they don’t have to drive far and wide to find the lone brick and mortar store for your registry. n Visit the stores and do your homework. Though some stores allow you to develop a registry entirely online, it still helps for couples to visit the store together and build their registries in the more traditional way. Visiting a store as opposed to browsing the store website allows you to touch and feel products, which can give you a more accurate idea of their quality. In addition to seeing the products in person, read online reviews of products before putting them on your registry so you can ensure you’re getting quality items. n Choose items that vary in price. Many couples are sheepish about putting expensive items on their registries. That’s not surprising, as the cost of attending a wedding, especially one that features lots of out-of-town guests, can be substantial. But some guests, such as the bride and groom’s parents and siblings, may want to give a more high-end gift, so don’t be afraid to include items in a range of prices, from the inexpensive to the more costly, on your registry. n Don’t abandon the registry after your big day. You won’t end up getting everything you include on your registry, but that doesn’t mean you should just forget about those items that never made their way into your home. Many retailers offer couples significant discounts on items from their registries that were never purchased, and those discounts may extend for as long as a year after the big day. Revisit your registry after the wedding to see if you can find great deals on those items you never received, and continue to do so until the registry expires. Building a registry can be a fun activity for couples about to tie the knot. But there are some guidelines to follow to make the process go smoothly for guests and couples alike.

n the days of yore, the responsibility of paying for a wedding fell to the bride’s parents. But that tradition has largely fallen by the wayside in recent years, when more and more couples have used their own savings to finance their weddings. Few couples enter the process of planning their weddings unaware of just how expensive weddings can get, but costs can easily begin to escalate if couples are not careful. Couples know that certain wedding expenses, such as the cost of booking a reception hall, will eat up a large portion of their budgets. But there are some hidden expenses that couples must build into their budgets to avoid finding themselves in debt as they walk down the aisle as husband and wife. n TAXES: Sales tax might not seem so significant when you’re buying everyday items, but the taxes add up quickly when paying for a wedding. Depending on where you live, state and local sales tax can exceed 9 percent in the United States, and some Canadians pay as much as 15 percent in combined sales taxes depending on where they live. Before signing contracts with any vendors, couples should get the price including sales tax written into their contracts, as failing to do so may result in a several thousand dollar surprise when the time to pay up arrives. n Gratuities: Gratuities are another potentially hefty expense that often takes engaged couples by surprise as they start to plan their weddings. Some reception halls build gratuities for staff into their estimates, and these tips for the staff can be as high as 25 percent at some venues. But even if gratuities for reception hall staff are already accounted for, don’t forget to include tips for additional vendors the day of the wedding. Couples may be expected to tip the florist, photographer, band or deejay and even the reception hall maitre d’ if his or her gratuity is not included in the aforementioned staff tip. Brides-to-be typically tip their hairstylist and makeup artist on the day of the wedding as well. n POSTAGE: Couples who plan to in-

Modern trends in wedding video

A

couple’s wedding day is often a whirlwind for the bride- and groom-to-be. Happy couples hope to remember every little detail, but that can be difficult when so much is going on. That is why many brides and grooms hire videographers to preserve the memories of their weddings. Couples who fail to capture their ceremony and reception on film may feel like they missed out once their big day has come and gone. As a result, a professional videographer can be a wise investment. Today’s wedding videos have come a long way from their poorly produced predecessors. Gone are the potentially cheesy soundbites and elevator music. Many of today’s videos are artfully edited and highly cinematic productions that could have couples wishing they were viewing videos in theaters. The following are some wedding video trends popular among today’s couples. n Brief clips and highlights: Few people want to sit through their entire wedding day frame-by-frame. Montages of key elements of the day are much more popular than a

chronological unfolding of the ceremony and reception. Some videographers like to show snippets of what’s to come at the start of the wedding video, then go into more extensive segments later on. n Special filters or film: Filters and lighting effects can give a wedding video an entirely different feel. For example, filming in 8mm can lend a grainy touch to the video and make it seem ethereal or even part of a home movie collection. However, few people want the stark reality of a high-definition camera that highlights every flaw. n Film chapters: Dividing segments of the video into different chapters allows viewers to fast forward to the parts they want to see and pass those they can skip. This saves the hassle of having to watch the video in its entirety. n Cinematic styling: Instead of a stationary camera on a tripod, this method of filming incorporates different angles and closeup shots to give the video a modern feel. It’s shot more like a movie than a documentary, allowing viewers to feel as though they’re really experiencing the event.

n Artistic, indy feel: Film buffs may want a wedding video that breaks the mold. Ask videographers to create something that would fit in at the Sundance or Tribeca film festivals. n Same-day editing: Want to revisit the ceremony at your wedding reception? Some videographers will edit portions of the ceremony and preparations for the big day in the time between the ceremony and reception. This gives all guests, including those who may not have been able to make the ceremony, the chance to view the nuptials. n Unobtrusive technology: This trend relates to the equipment used to capture wedding memories rather than the actual finished product. No one wants their view of the ceremony or reception to be marred by a big, bulky camera. Smaller video cameras enable videographers to seamlessly blend in and perhaps capture shots that larger cameras could not. Preserving wedding memories takes on new meaning when couples explore the growing trends in wedding videos. — MS Features

possible venue for this country couple. The smell of the hay still stacked in the corners and the summer air made this day a dream. The dancing continued into the night, a smile on everyone’s face. We ate, drank, and were oh, so merry ... er, married.

Jenn and Ron’s summer wedding was a few degrees warmer than a total fairytale. Surrounded by friends and family, these two practically glowed. A neighbor offered the use of his land that turned out to be a little slice of heaven, complete with that stream that I totally made them walk into for a few shots.

‘One Look at You’ LOCATION: Watertown Season: Fall Photographer: Lauren Harrienger Nick and Nicole’s wedding day was greeted with cold and rain, but they didn’t let it bother them

at all. We dodged the raindrops on the way to the church, and after they said ‘I do,’ the rain subsided just long enough for us to capture some gorgeous shots of this adorable couple. I think they’re right about rain on your wedding day being good luck. Everyone was laughing and having fun this whole day, I wish I could go back and re-live it!

‘Off the Beaten Path’ LOCATION: Belleville Season: Fall Photographer: Jessica Burt It was rainy and windy the entire day of Ashleigh & Travis’ wedding. It was time for photos after the ceremony and we drove to a gorgeous bridge in

Belleville. As soon as we got out of our vehicles, the rain and wind stopped! It was a miracle! We were able to get a bunch of gorgeous shots with the wet leaves, which really brought out the color! My favorite part was trying to hide the blankets under Ashleigh’s dress so it wouldn’t get muddy! Wedding photography is always an adventure! Ashleigh’s hair and makeup was done by Backwoods Beauty Salon.

‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ LOCATION: Valcour Conference Center, Plattsburgh Season: Late Summer Photographer: Jessica Burt Kristin & John’s wedding was a challenge, because I was actually a bridesmaid in the wedding! I have been friends with Kristin since high school. She really wanted me

to photograph her wedding, but obviously that was impossible, so I asked my good friend and photographer, Lauren Harrienger, to shoot the wedding for me. Kristin just asked that I take a few shots throughout the day if possible. I was able to capture this gorgeous photo of the bride in the bridal suite while we were all waiting for the ceremony to start! Backwoods Beauty Salon traveled to Plattsburgh for hair and makeup!

‘Woodland Wedding’ LOCATION: Richland Season: Summer Photographer: Jessica Burt Quinn and Jose were actually already married when they contacted me. They never had official wedding pictures so they asked me if I could take some for them. I have to say, I

And it was just the two of them, so it was fun and romantic! I love that they have these amazing photos to remember their marriage to each other, even if it wasn’t on their actual wedding day! we talked about their style. Holly said she loves black and white and dramatic photography. The inspiration for this shot came from a fellow photographer friend George Jweid. This dramatic shot was taken in the tunnel at Boldt castle and really speaks to Holly and Ian’s style.
