o be described as the ultimate gentleman among one’s peers in the game of golf — often called the gentleman’s game — seems the only appropriate title for Walter R. “Walt” Zimm. During his 50-plus years living in the Watertown area, Zimm made a lasting impression on just about everyone with whom he made contact, especially those who shared his passion and admiration for the sport of golf. Former playing partners, clubhouse pals, customers who used his expertise in golf club-customization, and general acquaintances alike speak with reverence for Zimm, who died in January at age 95. Executives at other north country courses have seen his work and admired it from afar. They, too, extol his legend, even those who never had the pleasure of meeting him. Ask any of the above to describe the late, great icon, and you’ll hear a bevy of
adjectives: Creative, innovative, meticulous, passionate, ingenious, warm and family-oriented, just to name a few. But you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who interacted with Zimm who doesn’t refer to him at some point as simply, a gentleman.
THE MASTERMIND
Zimm retired in 1982 from Corysan Shoes on Public Square in Watertown, the shoe store he owned and operated with his beloved wife of 60-plus years, Corlean. He then ventured full-time into his preoccupation with making, repairing, and customizing golf clubs. According to several of his satisfied customers, Zimm could modify a club in any way imaginable, no matter how unique the request. He was something of a mad scientist, the sport’s MacGyver, the Dr. Frankenstein of the local golf scene who built masterpieces in the shop he ran out of his basement, working vigorously into the
final years of his life. Zimm created affordable clubs of all kinds from spare parts. He repaired damaged clubs, custom-fit shafts and grips, and altered clubs in distinctive ways to fit the unique needs of any golfer who came to see him. Patric Giddings, for example, used Zimm’s expertise on several occasions. Giddings works in the pro shop at Adams Country Club, formerly known as Tomacy’s, the course where Zimm played as a member for much of his life. Giddings was a young player frequenting Tomacy’s when he first met Zimm. After a few conversations centered on improving the distance on Giddings’ iron shots, Zimm thought of a solution and offered his services. Zimm dipped into the deep, versatile tool chest that he possessed in his cellar, and bent Giddings’ irons in a way that would allow him to hit the ball farther. When Zimm was finished, Giddings’ 8-iron hit more like a 7-iron, his 7-iron 2016 Season | NNY Golf

Zimm had a profound respect for the game of golf and its etiquette, and those who played with him didn’t need much time to figure that out. Just ask Cody Salisbury, Zimm’s longtime friend and playing partner from Watertown, with whom he finished firstplace in the Tomacy’s Men’s League on multiple occasions. Salisbury can recall dozens of lighthearted memories that he and Zimm shared together on the course, most of which also involve their other longtime playing companion, Bob ‘Doc’ Trowbridge. But the one thing Salisbury said would bother Zimm on a golf course was “giving away strokes,” and easing up enforcing rules like boundary penalties, for example. “He’d accuse people of being sandbaggers,” Salisbury said with a laugh. “We had a few times where people didn’t quite know how to count so well, and he’d correct them if they weren’t right. They’d come back with a five on the hole and he’d say: ‘Well, I think you better re-count that. I think you had a six.’ He’d keep track of his game, plus his opponent’s, too.” Giddings said that one of the first things he learned about Zimm when he started playing the Adams course was how strictly he adhered to every rule in the book. “He was very polite to people about it, but you followed the rules when you played with him,” Giddings said. “The game had to be played the way it was supposed to be played. There were no freebies and if you were out of bounds, you were marked out of bounds. He knew the game of golf and he wanted you to know the game of golf.”
COVER STORY Salisbury, who first met his eventual playing partner while shopping at Zimm’s shoe store, said the duo along with other pals like Trowbridge had plenty of fun on the course in their decades playing together. In one of their first seasons in the Men’s League, Zimm hit a shot along the edge of the woods on Hole No. 3. Salisbury said that when Zimm searched for his ball in the rough, a bird started following him and tried to “chase him out of the woods.” Salisbury said this became a recurring incident for Zimm that season. “He kept missing along that edge and he’d go mowing down through there looking for his ball, and every time he’d go by the nest and that bird would come out chasing him,” Salisbury said. “We said” ‘Boy, that bird really loves you Walter.’” Salisbury also spoke of an especiallymild winter when the pair played with Trowbridge and other friends on three consecutive days: Dec. 30, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. He vividly remembers those outings. According to Salisbury, Zimm told the group in advance that he knew how to keep everyone warm and showed up to the course with a flask containing an assorted concoction of adult beverages — again displaying his creative ability to mix and match — and he named the resulting refreshment his “Kickapoo Juice.” Salisbury also recalls an incident during those memorable rounds on Hole No. 4 when Zimm’s shot hit a pond, and instead of sinking as it normally would, the ball bounced across the icy surface. Zimm then walked across to play his ball as it lied, staying true to form and respecting the rules of the game. “I couldn’t believe it, he walked across that ice and it was so thin it was sagging, but he walked across it to get to his ball” Salisbury said. “I thought he had a lot of nerve

doing that, but he made it across OK.” Zimm made a lasting imprint at the conclusion of those rounds as well. Salisbury said the crew assembled at Trowbridge’s house each night to warm up from their round by eating chili. Salisbury was tasked with providing the ingredients and bought sausage that turned out to be much hotter than he was expecting. While the others ate slowly and wiped sweat off their foreheads, Salisbury said that Zimm downed a few bowls with no hesitation, as if he were drinking water. “He always had quite the appetite,” Salisbury said. Golfers of various ages at the Adams Country Club are likely to be at least familiar with Zimm, who ended each round with a sandwich and a single beer in the clubhouse restaurant. “He’d always sit and have one beer with the boys after his round and then head home,” Giddings said. “He’s greatly missed around here.”
respecting the legend
Some within the local golf community who didn’t know Zimm were fascinated by his work, which they either saw from viewing clubs he crafted or heard of through second-hand accounts. Doug McDavitt, the PGA Professional and owner of Willowbrook Golf Club for more than 30 years, said he has talked to numerous golfers at his course who raved about Zimm’s work. “He filled a niche for a lot of players,” McDavitt said. “He built a quality product, and made a solid golf club at a reasonable price.” Joseph Butler Sr., a former Watertown mayor who now serves as president of the Watertown Golf Club at Thompson Park, said he met Zimm on a few occasions and was always left with a positive image.
“He was not only a very professional individual, but he was very meticulous when it came to repairing golf clubs,” Butler Sr. said. “And although I never had any of my clubs re-gripped or redesigned, I’ve played golf with people who have used his services and they always spoke very highly of him.”
LIVING THE FULL 18
Zimm lived a plentiful life long before he built his legacy in the local golf community. After graduating from Hudson High School in 1939, he joined the Army and was assigned to the 100th Infantry Division, serving in France and Germany during World War II as an artillery forward observer. Zimm was field commissioned and left the Army as a first lieutenant. He and his wife Corlean, whom he met while both lived in Patchogue and married in 1946, opened Corysan Shoes in 1959 and operated the business for 23 years before retiring in 1982. The Zimms raised two children — daughter Sandra and son David Mitchinson — were blessed with several grandchildren, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a party at the Partridge Berry Inn in November 2006. Corlean Zimm died in 2011. Melding in the creative ways that he later became best known for among local golfers, Walter Zimm took parts from his wife’s and daughter’s names, and merged them to create the title of his family’s shoe store. Sandy Kirch, whose parents played with Walter and Corlean Zimm, said of his reputation: “He was known as a very dedicated family man. He was always very gracious, and he was a true gentleman.” JOSH St. CROIX is a Johnson Newspapers sportswriter. Contact him at jstcroix@wdt.net or 661-2440.

t least once every golf season, Mabel Walker greets P.J. Simao at Waterton’s Ives Hill Country Club. Simao, the Alexandria Bay developer who purchased the timehonored golf course in 2007, is always reminded by Walker, a frequent Ives Hill visitor and a founder of Hospice of Jefferson County, of his original intention to operate the course for just a few years. Now entering his 10th anniversary season as owner of the West Flower Avenue landmark, Simao’s response of “let’s wait and see,” to Walker’s inquiry is one of the annual traditions he has come to cherish. “I really, truly feel at the end of the day if I did something different with (Ives Hill), I’m taking away from a lot of people’s quality of life and I really believe you need a quality of life,” Simao said. “It’s not my job to provide people
a quality of life. I’m not going to say I’ll be doing this forever. But I’ll do my best, and that’s what we’ve always done here.” Simao’s real estate company, Prime LLC, closed the deal in February 2007 to purchase Ives Hill from David Dawson of Binghamton, who had owned the club since 2004. When Dawson put the club on the market, there was some concern among community members that the financially struggling course could cease operations upon completion of a sale, but Simao said he viewed the south-side links as a community mainstay that he wanted to help preserve. “There has been a tradition here that I was certainly aware of and we wanted to see if we could continue that,” Simao said. Ives Golf Pro Lanie Gerken is “very glad that he stepped up to the plate and kept the business going.”
Gerken, who grew up golfing at Ives Hill with her family in the 1970s and ‘80s, came on board as the golf pro in 2010. “People really enjoy playing this golf course, the members have been coming back ever since I’ve been here, so now it’s just about trying to get some more on board with us. It’s been here since 1897, so it’s had a pretty good run, and you’d hate to lose it.” The restaurant and clubhouse were completely gutted and rebuilt after Simao took over, and the large-scale renovation project was finished in time for the season to open as regularly scheduled that May, about three months after the purchase was finalized. Simao said his main goal initially was to make the course more inviting to the public. He said the first change he made was to eliminate rules such as “men-only,” Please see IVES HILL, page 17 2016 Season | NNY Golf

F E AT U R E S IVES HILL, from page 15 days. The club was made open to women seven days a week immediately, and since her arrival six years ago, Gerken has built up the Tuesday Night Ladies League, which at times has seen about 100 participants. Simao also opened the club to the public seven days a week for the first time in its history, eliminating the “members only,” vibe that he felt was prevalent in previous eras. Ives Hill also started accepting bookings for tournaments and other charity events, which was a rarity under other ownership groups. “Back in the day, I think Ives had a little bit of a cloud or something over it where it was looked at like the uppity course,” Gerken said. “It was a private golf course and it was members only. But over the years, that’s changed. We want that public play.” Ives Hill has undergone several on-course adjustments during Simao’s tenure aimed at attracting players of varying skill sets. Hunter Horton, whose family owned the Thousand Islands Golf Club from 1982 to 2002, was hired as golf course superintendent and oversaw those changes. Horton owned a disaster contracting company and was working in southern Florida after Hurricane Wilma devastated much of the area in 2005. Simao called Horton shortly after his purchase was finalized, and Horton agreed to join the team at Ives Hill. Among the course adjustments Horton oversaw were building forward tee boxes and installing new bunkers. “We wanted to make the course a little more ‘friendly’ to all avenues and all clientele,” said Horton, who stepped down as superintendent last year to focus on his budding landscaping business, but still works for Ives Hill as a consultant. “The biggest struggle was that Ives Hill was known as a very long golf course, and it primarily played into the wind on a lot of holes. So we wanted to shorten it up a little bit and give people the option to play a little bit of an easier course.” In addition to the new clubhouse and restaurant, Horton said they planted trees and performed a number of other irrigation and landscaping projects to improve the course’s overall appearance. “Not only from the road, but once you’re on the course, it was more attractive to everybody,” Horton said. “When you pull into the place, when we did the complete renovation, it was a big wow effect.” Michael Frasher, who was named
superintendent last May after holding the same position at Carlowden Country Club and working as an intern at Bethpage, said the club will continue to evaluate ways to attract more golfers. “It’s been fun for me to work at one of the better courses in the area, and every day we’re just kind of moving forward,” said Frasher. “I think the conditions improve every year. We’re always progressing.” Simao is hesitant to put a timeline on how much longer he plans to own and operate Ives Hill, opting instead to take a “year-by-
year,” approach, but he plans to continue playing his part in ensuring the tradition lives on for another hundred-plus years. That became evident in 2012 when Simao briefly put the course on the market, adding the condition that any potential buyer must agree to operate the land as a golf course. “It’s kind of a wait and see, right now, I’m here,” Simao said. “After that, we’ll just wait and see.” JOSH St. CROIX is a Johnson Newspapers sportswriter. ‘The Park’ 90 years in play Watertown Golf Club known as a ‘non-pretentious’ course
By JOE MANGANIELLO

or nine decades, the Watertown Golf Club, referred to affectionately as ‘The Park,’ has graced the city of Watertown with a home for men and women of all ages to enjoy the game of golf. The Park, originally a seven-hole golf course, was founded in 1926. A group of forward-thinkers — led by Williams Jones, John Carlisle, George Stebbins, Albert Skinner, Al Koup and Selby Jenkins — decided to bring the sport to Americans, realizing it could become a critical piece to intimate communities like Watertown. At the official opening, Monsignor Michael Burns remarked, “a golf club brings men and women into a closer understand-

ing of one another. On the course, doctor and patient, employer and employee meet as equal and have the same problems to combat — getting the ball on the green and in the hole.” After 90 years, small changes here and there have been made, but the club prides itself in maintaining its roots as an open environment for golf novices and veterans. “The reputation of the club was that it was a non-pretentious place to play,” said Watertown Golf Club pro Christopher A. Bigenho. “A generally warm and welcoming atmosphere from the members and regular guests alike. It’s a place where regular guys like to hang out.” Bigenho joined The Park five years ago after an eight-year turn as the pro at Turin Highlands Golf Club. When the opportunity arose to fill an opening at the club in
2012, Bigenho said it was a good step to join such a reputable course. “It’s been here 90 years now,” said Kelley Campbell, longtime patron of The Park. “I actually knew some of the gentlemen who built the original seven holes. It’s a fixture here in the city.” Campbell’s grandfather was friends with Bill Bassette, one of the original founders of the club, and Bassette, who worked for the city’s department of transportation, introduced Campbell to the game. Golf has been passed down through many generations in the Campbell family, as is the case with so many families in the north country — an area known as much for its gorgeous summers as its brutal winters. The Park expanded to 18 holes in 1966 under the direction of former president Jim Huber. Campbell recalls players walk-
F E AT U R E S ing the entire course, and caddies quarrelling over the best players come tournament time. That tradition has faded away in modern times, as the golf cart came to expedite rounds and move things along. “To see a four-some go down the fairway with four caddies — (eight people) walking — it’s kind of cool,” Campbell said. “Now you look down a fairway and everyone is just taking off in their carts,” Campbell continued. “It’s ‘see you on the green,’ basically. It’s a lot lost there. (Before), when you were walking down the fairway, everybody’s talking.” During a walk through the clubhouse — a converted farmhouse which holds photographs and memorabilia from each decade of The Park’s existence — Campbell spilled stories of when the bar and restaurant was the social hub of the city. Dozens of people laughing, talking and drinking until 1 or 2 a.m. nearly every night. The club now serves a different purpose for a community persevering through economic unrest and the pressures of contemporary life. It’s now an afternoon escape, a social gathering for old friends to catch up each week, and Bigenho and others associated with the club have done their part to adjust to the needs of their members and guests over the years.
“Our goal, whether it’s in the golf shop or in the food and beverage center, we’re always trying to have a fun atmosphere where you can come out and have a good time,” Bigenho said.
“
provides us with a positive revenue stream for the golf shop,” Bigenho said. The majority of golf courses in the country are dealing with the problem of diversifying the membership population.
A generally warm and welcoming atmosphere from the members and regular guests alike. It’s a place where regular guys like to hang out. — Christopher A. Bigenho, golf pro and golf shop manager, Watertown Golf Club
In honor of longtime club pro Stu Jamieson, The Park has reinstituted Stu Bucks to make gear and merchandise an easier sell to members. Bigenho said they’ve evolved the club’s tournament schedule to be more inclusive to guests. “Those little games we have a couple times a week help guys accrue some dollars and
“As census numbers indicate, we have an aging population (in Watertown) with less industry and overall, it’s an economically challenged area,” Bigenho said. “As young people move away to other locales for various reasons, we’re trying to backload with younger players.” Bigenho said the club once
was ranked 14th in the state in terms of female membership, but that those numbers have declined, as well. “Unfortunately we’ve seen some of that market segment decline as our average population age has kind of risen — like every other club in the country,” Bigenho said. “We’re facing that. We’re all chasing women’s play and to get them more engaged in the club atmosphere.” Walking out of the clubhouse, Dry Hill ski resort can be seen off in the distance. Monuments for Jamison and Bun Quinn — a former pro and the 1949 club champion — hang just off the course. The traditions of Watertown Golf Club, rooted in a deep history of the area, persist at a time when the community is being tested now more than ever.
