T

TO OUR READERS

rees were starting to bud, the grass was starting to green and some golfers who had picked up new gear over the winter were starting to hit the links for what seemed like the beginning of a promising season. Except it was still February. Since that false start to spring, the snow returned and persistent rains in late April and early May have left golfers wondering when they are going to get to play on a consistent basis. As I write this in mid-May, most courses are soggy at best and unplayable at worst. But soon, sunshine and dry weather will return and tournaments and leagues will be in full swing. Golf is a big part of summer in the north country, a season that never feels long enough no matter when it starts. In this issue of NNY Golf, freelance writer Nicole Caldwell looks at the growing popularity of women’s golf leagues in the area. As with most recreational leagues, be it softball, bowling or soccer, the golf leagues are as much about socializing and camaraderie as about competition. “It’s just good for the soul,” Sue Hoffman, statistician for the women’s league at Clayton Country Club, tells Nicole. Also in this issue, freelancer Joleene Moody points out some rule changes that will be implemented in 2018. It’s never too early to start talking about the rules you and your friends are going to be sticklers about and which you might just ignore. I was intrigued about the rule that

limits the amount of time you can spend looking for a lost ball. l always though it was determined by the patience of the rest of your foursome and the pace Brian Kelly of play behind you. Five minutes seems excessive, but two minutes means I‘m going to be dropping a lot of balls and taking my penalties. I’m usually just happy if I can come out of the woods with a nicer ball than the one I was playing. Distance-measuring devices are also now legal. I have to take a mulligan on this one, because I never knew that such devices are common. But introducing more technology to golf doesn’t strike me as a great idea. I remember when my buddy had me tee off with his driver that looked like the toaster from my kitchen; I crushed the ball and never saw it again. It might have been the best drive of my life, only I’ll never know. It just felt like cheating. Hopefully, by the time you read this things have dried up enough to get you and whatever equipment you choose out onto the links many times. Maybe I’ll see you out there, but if you’re someone who brings a stopwatch to time his buddy’s ball search, we’re probably playing different courses. Enjoy,

COVER STORY

YOU SWING LIKE A GIRL Women’s leagues tee off throughout the north country STORY BY NICOLE CALDWELL

M

ary Lawrence, about to celebrate her 20th year as St. Lawrence University’s head men’s and women’s golf coach, knew she wanted to be a golfer the first time she heard the click of golf spikes on pavement. “I must have been 7 or 8,” she says, “and I had this neighbor two doors down who golfed. When she would come home and get out of her car, she still had her spikes on. I just loved the noise of the spikes. I said, ‘I have to get shoes like that.’” Lawrence’s friend Nancy Lopez, a retired pro golfer who won 48 LPGA Tour events including three major championships, was the same way. “She caddied for her dad, like me,” Lawrence says. “And it was the sound of the shoes that did it for her, too.” A PIONEER OF WOMEN’S GOLF IN ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY Lawrence, born and raised in Canton, is a north country golfing veteran with an intimidating resume. She’s a member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division, which was founded in 1959 and has the largest membership of female golf professionals in the world. She competed on the LPGA tour from 1978 to 1983, in nine USGA Women’s U.S. Opens, and the 1994 British Women’s Open. Lawrence also won the first-ever Women’s Senior Golf Tour qualifying school tournament, placed first in five professional events, and in 2006 earned the title of LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Northeast Coach of the Year.

Lawrence has also helped two golfers on to NCAA Tournament appearances, one of whom is female golfer Amy Caligiore; and she has enjoyed a front-row seat to the development and enrichment of women’s golf in the north country. In addition to coaching, Lawrence runs the St. Lawrence Indoor Golf Center and serves as director of instruction at the St. Lawrence University Golf Club. It is in these latter capacities that she has had the opportunity to see women’s recreational leagues balloon throughout the tri-county area. And she couldn’t be happier. “Women have finally formed leagues to socialize like the men after work,” Lawrence said. “Our course was the first to do it, then Partridge Run in Canton, and Potsdam. The business women finally said, ‘I need time to be out with my girlfriends having a good time.’ JEFFERSON COUNTY STRIKES WHILE THOSE NINE-IRONS ARE HOT Over at the Clayton Country Club, a woman’s league meets every Tuesday between May 1 and Sept. 1 for individual matches as well as “specialty nights,” which offer matches with different Shirley and Cody Salisbury with clubs formats. that Walter R. “Walt” Zimm made. over 35 years, actually put together a special 50th anniversary program,” Hoffman says. “They made sure to also invite golfers who used to play but couldn’t golf anymore for whatever reason.” Hoffman, a retired teacher from Saratoga Springs who had pro golfer and TV broadcaster Dottie Pepper as a student, has been a member of the Clayton Country Club Women’s League since 2011. She retired in 2012 and calls herself one of the “babies” in the league. “Many of these women have been playing 20, 30 years,” she says. “We have at least two school principals and a couple of teachers, as well as administrative assistants. There’s definitely a great age disparity—we have a lot of members over 55, then it drops off. People in their 30s and 40s are raising families, and have responsibilities for things besides their own leisure time. Then we have some younger folks, including a couple gals in their 20s.” Hoffman says most people hear about the league through word of 8 | NNY GOLF | 2017 SEASON

mouth, as well as by seeing match results that are published weekly in the Thousand Islands Sun. Many members of the Clayton Country Club league also play in women’s leagues at the Alexandria Bay Municipal Golf Course (which features an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Wednesdays between June and September), the LA Golf Course in LaFargeville and the Willowbrook Golf Club in Watertown. The Clayton ladies' league is open to anyone who’d like to commit, Hoffman says, with teams of four divided into 1-2-3-4 positions that tee off sometime between 4 and 6 p.m. on league nights. “Golf took a big hit when we went through that recession,” Hoffman says. “People weren’t traveling as much, and weren’t golfing as much." To combat the slump, Hoffman says her club focused on the community— and saw great results. Following a fundraiser at the club for the local food co-op, and a golf tournament that donated a portion of the proceeds to the food pantry, golf course usage at

the club climbed by 14 percent." Hoffman sees getting in the game as a boon to the body and the mind. “It’s good to get out with other women and do something physical,” she says. “It’s just good for the soul.” A STEADY LEWIS COUNTY TRADITION “I’m very happy with how things are going with the ladies’ league,” says Jared Chamberlain, owner of Cedars Golf Course in Lowville. “I think they’re having more fun.” Cedars’ ladies league this year is made up of 20 two-person teams playing on Monday nights for points. “Each week they play somebody different and keep track of points,” Chamberlain says. “At the end of the year they hand out prizes. Everything is held right here on site, and we go from the front nine to the back nine.” Chamberlain says the league’s numbers have been pretty steady in recent years, after doubling almost a decade ago. “I’ve moved the markers up a bit, which I think makes playing a bit more enjoyable for the members.”

he snow is gone and golfers across the north country are dusting off their clubs, signing up for leagues, and preparing for their best season yet. With this comes the desire for many to jump on the latest trend bandwagon. New golf clubs will find their way into golf bags. Shiny, up-to-date distancemeasuring devices will sit comfortably next to them. And the latest rules will top the list of some of the most competitive golfers. Doug McDavitt is the PGA golf professional at Willowbrook Golf Club in Watertown. Mr. McDavitt follows trends that come out of the PGA Show, the industry’s leading event. It was at the show that TaylorMade clubs announced they

signed Tiger Woods to a long-term deal. Despite his recent back surgery, which could put him out of play this year, Tiger will eventually play with TaylorMade clubs. The questions is, will TaylorMade club sales go up as a result? “It depends,” Mr. McDavitt said. “He needs to get out there and play first. I think the primary thing golfers will be talking about this year are all of the rule changes. They won’t actually take effect this year, but for the next 24 months they’ll be tested and are open for debate. The USGA (United States Golf Association) is looking at 33 different rule changes.” That’s a heck of a lot of rules for a golfer to remember. For the most part, golfers on the local level stick with the basics. But there is a cluster of hard-core golfers that play in tournaments who will take the rule changes seriously. Trends, too.

F E AT U R E S Some of these rules will stick, some will not. The best we can do at Willowbrook is educate our players on the new rules, ask them to learn them and encourage them to keep playing, no matter what.” — Doug McDavitt, PGA golf professional at Willowbrook Golf Club,Watertown

Some things to look for in 2017 are: NO PENALTY WHEN THE BALL MOVES ON THE PUTTING GREEN This rule came about in last year’s U.S. Open when judges gave Dustin Johnson a penalty after his ball moved on the green. Today if this happens, it will no longer be considered a penalty.

OBSTRUCTIONS NOW MEASURED IN INCHES When a golfer takes relief from a removal of obstruction, instead of measuring it in one or two club lengths, the USGA is proposing giving players 20 inches or 80 inches. Short of players carrying around a tape measure, how inches will be measured on the course remains to be seen.

CHANGE TIME TO LOOK FOR LOST BALL Players used to be given five minutes to look for a ball. To speed up the game, players will only have two minutes to dig through the weeds.

DISTANCE-MEASURING DEVICES LEGAL As it stands right now, players can’t use distance-measuring devices in tournaments. By allowing them, the USGA hopes to shorten up play time while helping players determine their true shot potential.

USE FLAGSTICK ON THE GREEN If this new rule is accepted, there will be no penalty if the golfer hits the flagstick with a putt. It can be a disadvantage to putt with the flagstick in, especially when a good putt is hit because the player is liable to hit the stick and pop the putt out. However, having the stick in could help sink a bad putt or chip.

PUSHING 9-HOLE ROUNDS Golfing nine holes used to be discouraged by many clubs, unless it was late in the day.

In an effort to encourage golfers to leave their electronics behind and hit the green, some clubs are encouraging 9-hole rounds regularly. It’s no secret that we all want more time. Our culture is constantly looking for ways to save an hour here or 20 minutes there. With proposed rule changes and golf trends peeking into the industry, time can certainly be saved. Mr. McDavitt is in favor of some of the shifts, but warns golfers that the game itself should not be compromised. “We play the game for fun,” he said. “Golf has been on a downturn since 2007 when the economy took a turn for the worst. Anything we do that might dissuade people from having fun and playing the game is a mistake. Some of these rules will stick, some will not. The best we can do at Willowbrook is educate our players on the new rules, ask them to learn them and encourage them to keep playing, no matter what.”

Cyclones’ LaFex rolls on despite physical challenges BY JOSH ST.CROIX

G NNY Golf

abe LaFex and his Watertown golf teammates spent some allotted practice time recently watching The Masters in the library at H.T. Wiley Intermediate School. For Frontier League golf teams — as LaFex has learned entering his sixth varsity season — waiting for winter weather to pass has become a tradition unlike any other. LaFex, who was born with Spina Bifida and has emerged as one of the area’s most decorated golfers, began his senior season with the Cyclones in April. The Masters viewing party was extra exciting for LaFex as his favorite pro golfer, Rickie Fowler, remained near the top of the leaderboard throughout the first three rounds. LaFex said that Fowler earned his fandom when he autographed his custom Puma hat about six years ago at a PGA Tour event at Turning Stone Resort. “It’s really cool because you look at them and you want to be like them and you want to follow in their steps,” LaFex said. “You get to watch what they do, talk about it, and try to pick up on some things.” The Cyclones — coming off a season in which they went 8-0 and won the Section 3 Class A title, led by LaFex’s 37 average — had yet to practice on a golf course entering the week. The team has fired shots of 50 and 100 yards on the grass fields, and practiced chipping and putting in the gym. Watertown coach Todd Heckman said the team watched The Masters together for the first time last spring to break up the monotony of limited practices. “It kind of gives them the itch to get out on the course and play again,” Heckman said. “We started last year with the inclement weather, and here it is snowing (last Friday), so we try not to force the issue outside, just come inside and enjoy The Masters and pick up some tips from the pros.” LaFex was born with a crooked spine and irregular hip alignment due to Spina Bifida, and said he quickly took a liking to golf after trying it out with his dad around age 10. “You don’t have to rely on other people when it comes down to tournaments because it’s just you out there,” LaFex said. “I’m not a tall person or some big strong person, and you don’t really need that.” LaFex said that initially, it took time to build the strength needed to evenly distribute his weight with each swing, but he quickly adjusted to form the smooth and consistent approach that has made him a fixture in the Cyclones’ top six since seventh grade. He walks with a slight limp but is otherwise unhindered on the golf course. Heckman said that, since he took over the varsity program three years ago,Ives LaFex has barely the birth Hill Country Club spoken owner P.J.ofSimao in condition. front of the restaurant and clubhouse early “I don’t know too much Heckman “I know thisabout season.that,” This year marks hissaid. 10th since he that he doesn’t make anyclosed excuses, he does his best, and he’s one on the iconic golf course and property of the top players. … He’soffalways pushed theinNo. 1 player and West Flower Avenue Watertown. he’s always been a good leader and a motivator to the rest of the players on the team, giving them tips to make them better.”

GOLF BRIEFS LaFex is seeking his first Frontier League title and said he also hopes to qualify for his first state tournament this spring, while guiding the Cyclones to another unbeaten campaign. LaFex placed second at the league championship as a sophomore in 2015 and missed last year’s tournament while battling a bout of food poisoning. He missed the cut for the second round of the state qualifier by a stroke last season. LaFex has also established himself as a prominent player in area summer tournaments. He won the Elks Junior Golf Tournament as a seventh-grader, claimed the second flight of the Watertown City Men’s Tournament in 2015, represented Ives Hill at the NNY Six-Man Championships, and recorded a hole-in-one at the Willowbrook Golf Club’s Yellow Hole No. 3 in September 2014. “I take a lot of pride in playing every tournament I can,” LaFex said. “It’s my passion and I don’t like losing, that’s probably the biggest thing for me.” LaFex, who works at Ives Hill Golf Course and Watertown Golf Club during the summer, plans to play golf while attending Jefferson Community College next year, and hopes to eventually transfer to a school in Florida to continue playing.

LONG-TIME GOLF PRO MOVES TO NEW COURSE Eight-time Watertown City Women's Golf Tournament winner Lanie Gerken has taken over as pro this season at the Watertown Golf Club. Ms. Gerken will serve as the Thompson Park course’s Class A and Teaching Professional. “I’m happy to be back at the Park,” she said. “I grew up playing here with my parents in the early to mid-70s. It’s nice to be welcomed back home.” Ms. Gerken won eight consecutive city tournaments starting in 1978 at age 15, making her the youngest champion in the history of the tournament. She earned All-American status as a college player and turned professional in 1987. She has since competed in various tournaments around the United States, Canada and Asia. She won the 1993 Canadian Professional Golfers' Association Women's Championship, but the highlight of her career came in 1995 when she competed in the U.S. Women's Open at Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo. She played in two rounds before missing the cut. Ms. Gerken, a Watertown High School graduate, has previously served as teaching professional at local courses and in Canada. She was most recently the pro at Ives Hill Country Club.

ROARING 20'S THEME JAZZES UP SAMARITAN'S THOUSAND ISLANDS GOLF CLASSIC The Samaritan Medical Center Foundation is gearing up for its annual Thousand Islands Golf Classic. The annual golf tournament, now in its 20th year, began in June of 1997 as a means to fundraise for the foundation and medical center. According to Michelle Nickles, community relations coordinator at Samaritan Medical Center Foundation, “This year’s event was chosen in conjunction to the theme roaring 20's and the Thousand Island Country Club was built in the 20's.” The event will be held on Monday, June 5 at the Thousand Islands Country Club, Wellesley Island. A portion of the proceeds will help to fund many projects and services throughout the year, including helping with the development of the new Walker Care Center for Cancer Care. In past years, the event helped to support funding for the Landsdowne Health Clinic, patient call system at EJ Noble dock, The Regina Rosen Fund and the rebuild and expansion of the Clayton Clinic. Tickets for this event are $275 which features a dinner, live and silent auction.
