Fine Art@Hale 2020 The Fine Art@Hale Committee is excited to present an online catalogue and sale of works from our invited artists for Fine Art@Hale 2020. In light of social restrictions around Covid-19, the difficult decision was made to cancel the exhibition, held annually in Memorial Hall since 1994. While social restrictions have eased in Western Australia, the many student based events that also required re-scheduling across the school meant that Memorial Hall was no longer available for the exhibition. The visual arts sector has been particularly impacted by the economic effects around the large scale cancellation of arts events this year, so taking the exhibition online has provided an opportunity for Fine Art@Hale to support the many artists who committed to exhibit with us this year. We trust our supportive patrons will enjoy the selection of art from this talented group of emerging and established Western Australian artists on this new platform.

AMARAL, Tatiana Tatiana Innecchi Amaral was born in Brazil and grew up in Sao Paulo, where she obtained a degree in Fine Arts. Using salvaged and reconstructed materials, her work represents the rebirth found in nature’s continuous cycles and symbolizes the patterns, shapes and colours found in her new Australian environment.

BURKITT, Ric Ric Burkitt’s recent abstract works explore composition through the process of production and destruction. Canvases and wood panels are painted, sanded, scraped, scratched and repainted, destroyed and reborn, buried and unearthed. Light and shade, form and space, edges of things; the paintings withdraw and re-emerge, and the history of the work is there in the layering, not abandoned, but embraced. Each painting is a quest for simplicity, clarity and calmness, retrieved from a kind of creative muddle and disorder. Such is the attraction and constant challenge of the abstract.

DEE, Liam Liam Dee is a Perth surrealist who enjoys blending the styles of traditional painting with the bombastic energy of pop culture. Liam’s vision is to create worlds where the construct of the natural environment is mainly supported by the organic manifestation of the man made, where the line is blurred between what is considered to be natural or synthetic. Taking influence from prominent street artists such as Jeff Soto and Shaun Tan, Liam’s art creates a mix of realism with a blend of psychedelic form, texture and colour to create a sense of organic life constructed from the inorganic.

FERNANDEZ, Teresa Teresa Fernandez began painting as a way to find balance in the highly structured world of corporate engineering in which she spent a great deal of her working life. Now a full time artist, Teresa finds inspiration and subject matter in everyday life and the things that surround her, often instilling a sense of quirkiness and fun into her work. Curiosity and experimentation are significant motivators resulting in art that is not placed within the boundaries of a single style. Teresa’s work varies between still life and abstract; she is more interested in discovery than settling into one form of expression.

GORDON, Philippa Philippa Gordon, ceramist and educator has been exhibiting for the past twenty three years. Japanese aesthetics and philosophy resonate profoundly as Tokyo was home in her early twenties. This megacity experience rich in culture, where art and nature pervade life for all, left a lasting impression. Philipppa’s work alludes to the natural process of weathering, an indicator of the passing of time. Her simple contemplative forms incorporate impressed, inlayed or printed patterns - including Japanese motifs - forming a multi-layered surface. Ancient ceramic glazes and techniques are represented in a contemporary context. ‘Dot’ Bowl Large, 2019 Impressed Stoneware 39.5 x 8cm

GREEN, David David Green’s preoccupation is with both natural and urban landscapes. His beautifully worked surfaces are also just as much about paint marks, particularly in chromatic greys, which render his works understated, mysterious, ineffable, sublime, and as timeless as the “landscapes, endless horizons and the subtle shifts of light at the start and end of the day,” which inspire his work.

JACKSON, Reegan Reegan Jackson is a multidisciplinary artist who currently resides and practices in the hills of Perth. Recent explorations in his practice have seen him turn to more traditional mediums of charcoal, pigment, ink and clay, pulling back to the roots of where creative minds would have first attempted to engage the world through art as a form of expression and communication. Mainly working in methods of sculpture, mark making and photography, he attempts to go beyond traditional processes through material experimentation and technologically altered engagements. Performing systems of process looking, he assembles poetic visual puzzles that make us reconsider our place within the world.

The Warmun Art Centre has a reputation as one of the most renowned and respected centres for Aboriginal art in Australia. At the time of its establishment in 1998, Deputy Headmaster David Bean was planning the first Kimberley Cross Cultural Tour for a group of Year 11 Hale School students to visit the Warmun Community. Subsequent tours and the commencement of an Indigenous Scholarship Program at Hale School have seen a mutually beneficial relationship develop between Hale School and the Warmun Community. With several boys from the remote community having graduated from Hale School, it seems a natural fit that Fine Art@Hale should continue to build on the relationship established by the school. Chosen in collaboration with staff at the Warmun Art Centre, we are once again delighted to be able to exhibit a selection of work by Warmun artists. Paintings from Warmun are characterised by their textured surfaces built from various, locally sourced, coloured ochres. The works are a tangible link to the East Kimberley region and the cultural knowledge of these artists. The Fine Art@Hale Committee gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the staff and artists of the Warmun Art Centre who have partnered with us again this year to make this part of the exhibition possible.
We trust that all patrons enjoy the addition of these works to the 2020 Fine Art @ Hale Exhibition. 27
BARNEY, Gordon Gordon Barney was born and grew up on Alice Downs Station. His father taught him stockwork and he became known as a skilled horsebreaker and buckjumper. When Gordon worked as a stockman, he would often carry with him a saddle bag for his ochre collection. At the end of his mustering stint, he would have a bagful of ochres that he sourced from riding through his country. Whilst working on Mabel Downs Station, Gordon met Shirley Purdie who later became his wife. Shirley is a well known senior Warmun artist who encouraged Gordon to paint his country. He started painting in 1998 when Warmun Art Centre commenced operation, often painting various hill lines located in his traditional country. Gordon’s sense of concentration and focus on country are often reflected in these landscapes. Gordon is well known in Warmun Community as a strong law and culture man and as an important ceremonial dancer.

Once described as ‘technically traditional with a refreshing twist on the realist’ Montgomerie’s work is strong and vibrant with a determined expression of her national pride.

NORTH, Peta The photographic work of Peta North comes from looking out at the landscape, to where sky meets earth, to where ocean meets horizon, capturing the beauty of nature as light, clouds, altitude and angles transform the natural and made landscape into incredible shapes. Her work combines her love of both flying and photography. Dangling with the plane door off, zeroing in on what at ground level cannot be seen, Peta paints a broad brush with her camera, sweeping through the sky, capturing the colours, shapes and majestic vista of our country from above.

O’MEEHAN, Holly Holly O’Meehan works with two distinctive, apparently unrelated mediums - crochet and ceramic. A dexterous handler of both, O’Meehan brings these two materials into harmony. The objects she creates are yarn-and-clay hybrids - hard, fired clay is pierced and shaped to allow the weaving-in of natural fibres, which in turn drape, hang, suspend or wrap the ceramic. Working in her Fremantle studio, O’Meehan appropriates natural forms like teeth, quills, spines and thorns, nestling them among gentler, softer textures and voluptuously rounded surfaces.

ROSSI, Alessandra Alessandra Rossi is a multimedia artist working in painting, printing, sculpture and installation. Her work has often explored the relationship between what is visible and what is invisible. She successfully conjures an ambiguous environment, one where presence is virtual, where people exist in the memory of place. Alessandra’s paintings are intended as fragments of a larger dialogue, aspects of a more complex existence, and through them she seeks to articulate the intangible, somewhere between fantasy and reality.

SPRIGG, Jordan Based in country Western Australia, Jordan Sprigg uses recycled metals found from retired machinery, scrap heaps and clearance sales. The objects he produces range from dragonflies, owls and seahorses to larger scale sharks, eagles and even horses. The scrap iron sculptures are purposely left in their rusted state to highlight the age of the metal and the history of each piece. From springs, gears, bearings and nuts to bolts, shovels, pliers and saws, the list is endless as to what the artist makes use of in his work. Understanding and appreciation of these timeworn parts of a past life allows space for creation of a new life in their current composition.

TAYLOR, Andrew R Andrew R Taylor is a Western Australian sculptor and visual storyteller. His work brings to life a tender world of whimsical characters through a series of striking drawings and situational sculptures. His simple characters playfully inhabit a slightly skewed world. Driven by emotional interplay, his works capture intimate glimpses, providing the viewer an opportunity to discover and imagine through reflection of their own life experience. Andrew’s sculptures are generally constructed as resin chalk carvings and most recently handmade cellulose clay over steel armatures.

TEMPESTT, Sioux In addition to Sioux Tempestt’s studio-based works, her practice employs a multi-disciplinary approach, generating mural, public, sculptural and digital art which meaningfully contributes to its context. Sioux intuitively fuses colour and form to investigate the integration of abstract expressionism within different realms. She seeks to conceptually express dynamism and movement through painterly interpretations with the marks of paint and other medium recording the kinetic energy of paint as it is transferred from body to surface. Sioux’s interest in urban art is evidenced by the incorporation of aerosol in her work.

TREMAIN, Andrew Andrew Tremain is a ceramic artist who was born in England, emigrating to Australia in 2005. Andrew now lives in Western Australia where he makes crystalline glazed ceramics from fine white porcelain clay. The inspiration for his forms comes when he is throwing the clay on the wheel, focusing on creating curved forms that enhance the crystals that form in his glazes. His crystalline glazes have a high glass like shine that capture the light and make the crystal formations pop out from the surface. Andrew’s pieces create a horizon of heights, shapes and colour variations that are a pleasure to live with. Effervescence, 2020

Alex Allen, recipient of 2019 FineArt@Hale Scholarship with one of his works.
From a young age I have always loved art, from drawing in school books to painting in art class. For me, art at Hale has provided me the opportunity to harness and direct this love into legitimate creation of technical art. Whenever I saw art on my timetable my eyes would light-up, as it gave me the opportunity to escape the ‘Hale life’ for just 45 minutes. I love the Friday afternoon Art Club to see and admire all the committed art students work on their own artworks. The teachers in the department are awesome, and every year they are invested in my work to improve my style and compositions as an artist. Art at Hale has helped me develop my understanding of art, and I feel honoured to be the recipient of the FineArt@Hale Scholarship for 2019. Alex Allen Recipient of the 2019 FineArt@Hale Scholarship
