FINE ART hale 23-25 JULY 2021
23-25 JULY 2021 | memorial Hall Online until 22 august 2021 Fine Art@Hale’s mission is to encourage an engagement with the visual arts at Hale School, which fosters new ways of seeing, creativity, critical thinking and community connection. Since 1993, Fine Art@Hale has staged an annual exhibition for both Hale School and the wider community. After COVID-19 restrictions required last year’s exhibition to move online, the committee is pleased to bring the exhibition back to Memorial Hall in the 60th Anniversary year of Hale School on the Wembley Downs campus. Proceeds from the exhibition are directed towards art scholarships, awards and visual art activities around campus including this year’s Artist in Residence, Ross Potter. Please visit our website www.fineartathale.org for more information and to become a Friend of Fine Art@Hale. We hope you enjoy FA@H 2021!

COWPER, Shelley Drawing on personal experience to interweave themes of site, place, and emotional situations, Shelley’s work explores the ephemeral world of water and sky. A sailing boat was home while she and her husband circumnavigated Australian waters, and her current body of works utilises the Porthole to symbolise the boat as both a vessel of containment, and a ‘portal’ to other worlds and places. ‘The Night Watch’ series relates to the ever-changing observations and challenges of the three-hour watches at sea. Shelley is a mid-career artist who has won a number of awards and lectures in Visual Art at North Metro TAFE.

DEE, Liam Liam Dee is a Perth surrealist who enjoys blending the styles of traditional painting with the bombastic energy of pop culture. Liam’s vision is to create worlds where the construct of the natural environment is mainly supported by the organic manifestation of the man-made and where the line is blurred between what is considered to be natural or synthetic. Taking influence from prominent street artists such as Jeff Soto and Shaun Tan, Liam’s art creates a mix of realism with a blend of psychedelic form, texture and colour to create a sense of organic life constructed from the inorganic.

Sue studied graphic design after leaving school and worked in advertising and design. She started painting in 2016. Sue works primarily with acrylics on canvas and linen and paints quiet, considered still lives with a particular muted palette that convey a monumental intimacy. Sue’s still lives are about life, history and love and their connection to our families and lineage. Each still life, in its essence, is a portrait of the objects that reflect our lives.

FERNANDEZ, Teresa Teresa Fernandez began painting as a way to find balance in the highly structured world of corporate engineering in which she spent a great deal of her working life. Now a full-time artist, Teresa finds inspiration and subject matter in everyday life and the things that surround her, often instilling a sense of quirkiness and fun into her work. Curiosity and experimentation are significant motivators resulting in art that is not placed within the boundaries of a single style. Teresa’s work varies between still life and abstract; she is more interested in discovery than settling into one form of expression.

FERRARIO, Silvana Silvana Ferrario is an award-winning glass artist. Her inspiration comes from her experiences, memories and surroundings. She is intrigued by the geometry present in both man-made and naturally occurring structures, and its opposition to the fluidity of the natural elements. Silvana particularly likes to use the viscosity of the glass when it is hot to give movement to her work, even with a structured subject.

GAYE, Jennifer Western Australian born textile artist Jennifer Gaye draws inspiration through conversation with and observation of nature’s depth of character. From the ocean to the sky, reflecting relationships between the natural and urban world, Jennifer allows her textile art to speak of her true passions. Through experimentation, using her own processes and techniques, Jennifer introduces these inspirations to cloth through her collage textile work. Jennifer uses machine and hand stitch, applying shades of subtleness and luminous colour, pattern and textiles like the stroke of a brush, then captures movement through the lens of her camera. When all seems complete, Jennifer will work back on the piece created, reconnecting the cycle and the artistic conversation. Soft Reflection, 2021 Mixed media on canvas Framed, 92 x 182cm

This exploration of light and dark is central to Katie’s work, along with a sense of nostalgic yearning for the simple pleasures of a nature-focused lifestyle like the one she enjoyed as a child growing up in a small farming community in southern Africa.

O’MEEHAN, Holly Holly O’Meehan works with two distinctive, apparently unrelated mediums - crochet and ceramic. A dexterous handler of both, O’Meehan brings these two materials into harmony. The objects she creates are yarn-and-clay hybrids - hard, fired clay is pierced and shaped to allow the weaving-in of natural fibres, which in turn drape, hang, suspend or wrap the ceramic. Working in her Fremantle studio, O’Meehan appropriates natural forms like teeth, quills, spines and thorns, nestling them among gentler, softer textures and voluptuously rounded surfaces.

PARKER, Lesley Perth artist Lesley Parker’s interest in textiles began when she was a student at WAIT and Curtin. After many years as an Art Teacher and textiles lecturer, her art reflects a continuation of these interests. Her love of pattern is often an inspiration and a common feature of her art, while her textiles frequently incorporate fabric printing and dyeing techniques with collage. Lesley uses stitching to create patterns, textures and for drawing and mark making. She is interested in the different textures of fabric, the history of recycled fabric, layering, the slow and contemplative nature of hand stitching and the patterns and rhythms that emerge as the idea develops. Favourite themes include the patterns and rhythms of the natural world as well as the artefacts and objects we collect in our personal life.

REYNOLDS, Paul Teacher and artist Paul Reynolds has regularly exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Western Australia. The observations of a behaviourist, as Paul likes to call them, revisit formative moments in life both through location and interaction and their effect on the construction and reinforcements of belief, values and societal misgivings. The artistic chronicles on these moments are merged with a bit of humour, honesty and a hint of cynicism but people will construct their own story.

ROSSI, Alessandra Alessandra Rossi is a multimedia artist, working in painting, printing, sculpture and installation. Her work has often explored the relationship between what is visible and what is invisible. She successfully conjures an ambiguous environment, one where presence is virtual, where people exist in the memory of place. Time is essential in her work, as the development of a theme unfolds working out thoughts and emotions on canvas. Alessandra’s paintings are intended as fragments of a larger dialogue, aspects of a more complex existence, and through them she seeks to articulate the intangible, somewhere between fantasy and reality.

TAYLOR, Andrew R Andrew R Taylor is a Western Australian sculptor and visual storyteller. In addition to studio-based works, her practice employs a multi-disciplinary approach, generating mural, public, sculptural and digital art which meaningfully contributes to its context. Sioux intuitively fuses colour and form to investigate the integration of abstract expressionism within different realms. She seeks to conceptually express dynamism and movement through painterly interpretations with the marks of the medium recording its kinetic energy as it is transferred from body to surface. Sioux’s interest in urban art is evidenced by the incorporation of aerosol in her work. Is This What Sunshine Looks Like?, 2021 Acrylic, graphite and oil stick on canvas Unframed, 91.4 x 91.4 x 4cm

Sarah’s work echoes the intimacy of the process involved, allowing emerging patterns to highlight a moment of connection.

TREMAIN, Andrew Born in England, Andrew Tremain is a ceramic artist who emigrated to Australia in 2005. Andrew now lives in Western Australia where he makes crystalline glazed ceramics from fine white porcelain clay. The inspiration for his work comes when he is throwing the clay on the wheel, focusing on creating curved forms that enhance the crystals that develop in his glazes. His glazes have a high glass-like shine that captures the light and makes the crystal formations pop out from the surface. Andrew’s pieces create a horizon of heights, shapes and colour variations.

YOUNGLESON, Simon Simon Youngleson’s sculptures resonate with his architectural and artistic appreciation of scale, space and form. His human figures are timeless, abstracted expressions of human form. Their quiet simplicity affords us time and space for reflection. Youngleson was born in Durban, South Africa and graduated from the University of Natal as an architect, migrating to Australia in 1998. He worked as an architect in Perth and started his own practice in 2002. Simon’s work reflects his connection with the outdoors and the time he has spent in nature - surfing, fishing and camping. de VILDOSOLA, Michael Michael de Vildosola studied Design: Jewellery, Silversmithing and Allied Crafts at London Guildhall. References to natural forms and historical civilisations regularly appear in his work. Like miniature sculptures his pieces are to be enjoyed over lifetimes. The forms and textures of the metals that encase the gemstones are as important as the stones themselves. After developing his craft in London and Barcelona he settled in Perth as a contemporary master jeweller in 2005. In 2020 a piece Michael was commissioned to design and make for Habit Barcelona was worn on the red carpet of the 2020 Oscars.

MERRITT, Jennie Jennie Merritt is a flamework glass artist primarily making jewellery but also sculptural pieces. She started to make jewellery in 2004 and progressed to flameworking glass at the end of 2009. Teaching herself from books and the internet, she uses traditional flameworking techniques to create unconventional works. She has a signature style of sculpting the glass directly onto wires which she then uses in her pieces alongside other mixed media. J31 Dappled Dusk Necklace, 2021 Flameworked glass 47 x 2.2 x 0.7cm

Rizvan Nair, recipient of 2020 FineArt@Hale Scholarship with one of his works.
Since a young age, art has always been a fundamental part of my life. Pursuing the subject at ATAR level is one of the most rewarding decisions I have made - nothing comes close to being proud of all the hours you put into the creative process. Art has always been one of my favourite subjects as the stress of school life comes to a pause for those short minutes we spend in the classroom. Every day I check my timetable just to see when I have art, even if we are doing theory. It’s the only subject where hours can pass, and it will feel like only a few seconds. I find it sad that I only discovered the Friday afternoon Art Club later in my time at Hale and I think it’s great seeing how committed everyone is and how fantastic some of the younger students are! The strong community has developed from boys who come down to improve their own art, but also help each other. My passion for art would not have truly manifested if it wasn’t for the amazing department who show a genuine care in seeing everyone reach their full potential. Studying Art at Hale has allowed my own understanding and style to flourish and I am truly grateful to be the recipient of the FineArt@Hale Scholarship for 2020.
