April 2013 News FLash FTR has decided to cancel the final Enduro scheduled for May 19, 2013 at Heart Island due to the high possibility of fire. Our rights to our land are governed by the published fire indexes, and we are seeing very high fire indexes for the areas used for the event. The good news is that we are working diligently to have a full schedule next season, and we will have contingencies in place to safeguard next season’s full schedule.

NANCY On Friday, I made a point to leave work early. Everything at the PAYTON PRESERVE house was ready. The RV was packed and practically running when I got home. talks about building speed over the years, his Bike Week blitz and burning more than 6,000 calories
at the Alligator
I’ve been meaning to catch up with Nic for a magazine interview, especially after Glenn Gardner snapped this month’s cover photo of Nic racing the Vintage bike recently. (Thank you, G2!) From the moment I saw the photo, I knew it would be So, we chatted recently via telephone about his umpteenth season in FTR - he joined in 1998 - and spoke at length about what’s changed and what’s stayed the same. The good news is, after all these years, Nic still thinks FTR is better than ever, and I have to agree. We’re starting to get the radio show off the ground and plan on rolling it out in full force next season. So, for those of you just joining FTR, welcome to the family!
The Editor’s Beat
FTR Magazine returns to your mailbox every month starting now! Do you want to be in the magazine? Can you believe April is here already? I can! I’m excited for the warm weather to return, my tan, and to get some time off to practice this summer. That’s because, thanks to the Muchard family, I’m the proud owner of two 2005 YZ 125s! It’s been at least 10 years since I’ve owned a dirt bike or two, and I’m pretty sure I’ve never been more ready to race - did I mention one of them is already tuned by TF Racing Suspension? I’ve ordered my race backgrounds, even though I probably won’t be ready to win anything until next season. I want to show up with some seat time under my belt, not be getting to know my new beast in a race! It’s definitely a lot to think about now, ordering gas cans, a stand, new tiedowns and a ramp. But once I am set up, the only thing I’ll need is a little gas, less oil and a lot of loving! One thing I’m even more excited for is the return of the printed monthly FTR Magazine starting with this month! It’s been almost two years since I was graciously awarded the title of publisher; while I’ve been producing a magazine every month since September of 2010 (with a few double issues here and there), I know print is guaranteed to be seen by thousands! This magazine is mailed to more than 1,400 households, some
counting more than a few members. Another thing worth mentioning is the recent forum post proposing a few changes to the Hare Scrambles schedule that, mostly, is all about moving the quads to Sunday. Yet, as it’s been brought to my attention before, quads were moved to Sunday once already, and it didn’t work. The quads also broke off and started their own series, which also did not work. I wanted to know, why now? So, I created a survey to see what the members thought. To date, 65 responses. All of which will be on the FTR blog after this magazine goes to press. A lot wrote of people wrote that, if the schedule changed, FTR would lose revenue and/or its membership base because of everyone who can’t race on Sunday. People mentioned work schedules and “if it ain’t
broke, don’t fix it.’ I personally do not have an opinion whether or not the schedule should be changed, but I do think the majority of the members better speak up before a minority makes the decision for all. That’s why I would love to know: what do you think?

“I’m happy with how the schedule is now. Having been this way for many years, we and I’m sure many others, have built their personal schedules around what we have now. Funny how every option puts quads last on Sunday. Not really a survey, kind of like an election with all Democrats....”
email editor@floridatrailriders.org Any members who would like to be in the magazine, send in a photo of your rig or race shop for a chance to be featured in an upcoming issue. Or, watch out at the next race; you might get mystery shopped! We are also looking for summer contributors! Want to be published on a result basis? FTR Magazine is looking for opinion articles, interviews, race reports, product reviews and more! Branson Blake Age: 17 Favorite childhood memory of racing? Made it to Loretta’s in 2011 and was on the leader with a flat tire. Best part about living in FL? Weather you can ride in year around. What do you think about FTR? I’ve been in FTR for around 12 years. It’s had it’s ups and downs but overall it is a good family organization. How did you get so fast?! Just being on the bike weekend after weekend and hard training. Who helps you out? My mom and dad are my main support. Doug Harvey helps me with suspension, Tim Conner builds my motors for me and Jeremy Powell is my physical trainer. Ronnie Hames had also helped me out a lot also. Any advice for young racers? Ride as much as you can. Sponsors? HBD MotoGrafx, Doug Harvey, Conner Racing, Fly Racing, Enduro Engineering, Nassau Powersports, Two Cool lubricants, Loud Mouth. What are you looking forward to next? My goals are to get a championship in 250A, also to win 200A in both national enduros and GNCC.

“This change would help diffuse some of the tension between quad and bike riders”
“Yes and no. Personal no. I do feel it may have a negative effect on me and my group. But for the good OF FTR I think making changes is needed some times for the better of the whole group.” Do you belong to a club?
“If it’s really BETTER for the majority. If not then leave it alone. If it’s not broke, dont fix it.”

FTR Motocross #6
Steve Loomis -
My family and I had a great weekend at Sunshine Mx, If you guys are not a part of this MX season, you should consider doing so. We will continue to support FTR MX!!!
A
t mid-point of the 2012-2013 FTR MX Series, things are going well. I reported to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, at the February FTR Executive Committee/ BOD Meeting, on the success of the series so far. While the attendance of the series needs to grow and I will continue to work toward that, we have been getting turnouts that are comparable to other MX series in the state. At Reddick for Round 5, we had more than 225 entries and a large turnout for Saturday practice. My goal is to make all of the events have that type of turnout at every track. Speaking of tracks, I was disappointed to hear about the closing of Dirty Foot MX since that was a track we were planning on racing next year and had had some discussions with the track owner about adding his track to the FTR MX Series. I think we
Race Report by Rick Dreggors currently have some of the best tracks in the state of Florida on our schedule; however, there are a couple of others that we will be exploring for next season to add to the schedule. Stay tuned for more of that information. At Round 6, we had our smallest turnout so far this year. However, the Sunshine MX track and staff were terrific and we will be back there on May 5 hosting a joint event with the Florida Vintage Motocross Series. I encourage anyone who has an infinity for Vintage racing and bikes to attend that weekend since it is going to be the last event of their competition season and a Cinco de Mayo party at the track. We invited their riders to make an unofficial visit at Reddick and had a great time meeting and watching them participate in our race there. If anyone has a Vintage or Evo bike, or a modern bike, and would like to race with them, they are making arrangements to accommodate your wish to race with them and also with us during our regular FTR MX race on Sunday. We are currently working with the Dade City track owner to reschedule the March 31 race we had to cancel at Dade City

since Easter fell on March 31 this year. The MX Committee is also reviewing the class structure at this time. We are looking at the number of entries in each class and ways we can simplify class structure where possible. We have had several classes where we have had very little participation this year and may consolidate those classes with other classes. We are also reviewing the AMA class structure and are looking at ways to more closely resemble the AMA classes. However, rest assured, we will always continue to have Woods, Vintage and Evo classes, as well as quad classes. Speaking of quad classes, please let myself and Dwayne Sprenger, the FTR MX quad rep, know if you have any thoughts on the quad class structure. Dwayne is working with a group of quad riders and hopefully will be increasing the participation of quads in our series for the rest of this season and into next year. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the remaining FTR MX rounds. Also hoping that once the Hare Scrambles season concludes, many of you will come and ride with us at the remaining FTR MX rounds. - Rick Dreggors
I
was hoping to give everyone a race report from Round Six of the FTR Motocross Series at Sunshine MX however, sometimes things don’t go quite as planned! Practice at Sunshine was phenomenal. Saturday, the track had just the right amount of moisture: it was a little overcast, and the temperature was comfortably in the low 70s. Early spring Florida weather is hard to beat! Sunday’s conditions were predicted to be even better. I was so excited to race; it was the perfect way to end my much-needed spring break! Both of my parents, who usually come to watch my boyfriend, Scott, and me race, were unable to make it out for Sunshine. So Scott and I got up early to head to the track. Practice was fantastic Sunday morning. Scott rode flawless and I felt really confident for the day…unfortunately, instead of racing our motos later that day—we ended up spending the afternoon at the hospital. When Scott and I aren’t racing each other, we prep each other’s gates. His first race was moto 4 and mine was moto 6. I had gate prep duty and I multi-tasked, trying to get some shots for the Facebook page. The gate dropped and Open B launched. Scott grabbed the holeshot and looked to be off to another great ride— so I started walking back to my truck to get my gear on so I could watch the rest of the race from the fence. Then I heard the announcer say, “Scott Westbrook on the number 14 seems to be having a hard time with his holeshot device.” I contemplated changing direction but my race would be on the line soon so I kept with my plan to get ready first. I figured that he would get it under control.
As I was within feet of my truck, I heard the announcer, and everyone watching, gasp. I pivoted and headed straight for the track, running in my boots when I put two and two together, hoping that I was wrong. When I got up to the track, there he was lying on the ground on his back. Even though I had been hurt multiple times, he has been hurt multiple times, and I had even been with him when he broke his collarbone—this was a first time I was the only one there. I have such a better appreciation now for what moto moms and dads go through. The EMTs were parked next to the finish line that he had crashed over, Rick Dreggors and Sean Fitzgerald were there instantly, too, as were other people who helped me get his bike and gear together. I didn’t see the crash but I was told that he had pulled a “Zack Bell,” which was scary enough to watch on TV. The medics thought he may have cracked some ribs and, because of the way he fell, they strongly advised him to go to the hospital and check for internal injuries. Better to be safe, than sorry…so Scott hobbled back to the truck
Chicks Who Rip
after finally catching his breath and I pushed his bike back. Our pit neighbors were so helpful in getting everything loaded up. I never got a chance to catch their names in my semi-paniced state, but I was so thankful that they were there to help me get everything loaded. After being fully checked over, the doctor thankfully let us know that nothing was broken, just extremely bruised. I have always been so blessed and so thankful that my mom and dad are both supportive and involved in my motocross racing. I know that I couldn’t do it without them. Our experience at Sunshine has given me a new perspective on the kind of stress that I’ve put them through all of the years and makes me appreciate all of their sacrifices even more. In motocross, anything can happen; it’s something each one of us knows subconsciously, and that risk is part of what makes the reward of a great ride all the more sweet. I am so thankful that everything turned out alright and I am really glad that we will have the chance to race again at Sunshine, since I missed out this time around! - LG

63rd Alligator: new location,
same caloric burn
L ee D aley :
SWEET trail DDR! That was a lot of fun. Hopefully the land owner will open up some more land and you can get an honest 80 or 90 miles out of it! Thanks for all the hard work! Ride on
M ichael P riest :
Thanks DDR Thanks to everyone who put so much effort in hosting the Alligator Enduro. From the FTR Forum:
I would especially like to thank the guy riding a Kawaski riding sweep and Steve the four wheeler who towed me back to my truck. I broke down about 30 miles into the race and thought I was going to have to wait 2 hours to get pulled out. I was back to my truck within 20 minutes of the time I broke down. You’re so much better than AAA! I’ll see you next year! God willing, I’ll finish next year.

The bad news is the Volusia County Council denied a resolution from the City of Daytona Beach that would have allowed motorized vehicles and ATVs in the Tiger Bay State Forest west of Daytona Beach. Thank you to the FTR members who came out to support the cause

[ Editor’s note: When I think of Nic Frey, I can recall nearly 15 years ago like it was yesterday, climbing the ranks of the FTR Hare Scrambles and Enduro series back in the late 90s and early 2000s. That was before we both went off to college and racing fell to the back burner. Not anymore... Now Nic tops a Google search with his Twitter page: @nfrey2 “ Recreational. Lutz, Florida.” He was also featured on floridadirtbike.com: floridadirtbike.com/2012/10/01/nicfrey-working-on-some-sweet-vids

After his return from Bike Week recently, this year racing the J-Day GP, GNCC and the Alligator all in one week. we caught up after the Dade City Hare Scrambles where he mentioned burning more than 6,000 calories at the Enduro.]
Out Front
JS: How old are you and where do you live now? NF: I’m 28 years old and live in Lutz, Florida, a suburb just north of Tampa.
JS: How long have you been riding FTR? NF: I started riding FTR in 1998 when I was 14 years old. I had been doing trail riding at Croom with the Lyons family and we heard there was basically a way to compete in the trail riding that we had grown up riding. JS: Nice. What class did you start? NF: Beginner class. I think I got three top 5 finishes on an ‘88 XR 200. Once I got out of Beginner, I actually skipped to C class because, at that
time, C class actually raced at 2 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon. Schedule-wise that didn’t really work and so I went to B 4troke on an XR 200 and you know, got destroyed by XR 400s, ATK 605s,and XR 250s and decided to try B 200 for a little bit. JS: So, from there, you guys were hooked because that’s when I started racing, and a lot of you guys were there every weekend? NF: Oh yeah. At that time, we had a pretty good group going. My family would travel and camp with the Lyons family. We would show up pretty much for every race, every weekend, doing the Hare Scrambles. I remember

my first race was at the FTR mine property a couple of miles north of the Hard Rock property and it’s one of those places that we don’t have anymore. JS: Best memories of FTR back in the 90s to early 2000s? NF: I can remember one of the best things I liked about FTR growing up is that it was a thing that you focused all week on, at least for me. I know for all my group of friends we got to meet, every weekend and there was this plan that you’re going out there to race or to ride. So all week you focused on that and then you made friends with people from all over the state of Florida, not just the kids who live down the street from you. At least that’s how we became friends because you lived in Winter Park and I lived in Tampa and the same with other families, we got to where there were friendships with people from all over the state of. Also, the traveling, too, seeing the back roads and the small towns that you would never see otherwise...If somebody told me they were from a small town in Florida, I’m like, try me. I guarantee I’ve been through it or been to it. JS: Exactly. That’s awesome. So, what was your next bike, a KDX? NF: The XR 200 didn’t fair too well in B 200 so I got a 1997 KDX 200 and didn’t get a championship in B 200 but got enough advancement points to move to A 200 on it and in one season, I think I cracked the cylinder three times, broke the clutch a couple of times and realized this KDX just couldn’t really handle the A class pace and moved up to a YZ426, I guess a real race bike. I rode A 4stroke for about three years. The last year was the 2003 era - I got the FTR scholarship and college kind of became almost too cumbersome and too time consuming. It became pretty difficult to race and I was more into going to college. So, it’s a long time. It’s a lot of years there.
continued on next page
JS: Wow. I know. That’s crazy. So, how did you develop your speed along the way? NF: We, myself and everyone I grew up riding with, primary the Lyons family, we

would go to Croom and we would play this game where we would have one person go out and be the leader. We rarely ever rode marked trails, it was just go out and kind of find your way through the woods, and we would battle for second place. So, for the entire time, you would look ahead, you would watch the rider ahead of you, and then try and anticipate which way they were going to turn, and consistently battle for hours. We’ve been doing that since we were 8 or 9 years old. It’s that competitive spirit: as a kid if it can’t destroyed, you have to turn it into a competition. JS: Flash forward to college. Talk about FTR taking a back seat for a while. NF: Yea, as I got into college and more into mechanical engineering, and I ran a motorsports team at the University of South Florida and that basically became a full-time job on top of schoolwork in itself...But, at the time, I needed to focus on school and the extra-curricular activities that would help later on in life for jobs and decided for FTR to take a back seat but in doing that, it enabled me to, once I graduated, to go out get a good job and to be able to come to the races afterward. JS: Yea, for sure. That’s one of the reasons I decided to go to USF because I knew I would be close to my FTR family even if I was not racing again for a while. Let’s bring it to present day: you’re eighth overall in A Open for Hare Scrambles, fifth for Enduro, and riding Vintage, Woods and Vet B classes in Motocross. Is it better than ever or what? NF: I think FTR is better than ever. So much stuff has changed, for example, the Sunday classes. It’s nice now to be able to go and race Evo and then race at 1 o’clock on Sunday and be back home at a decent time. Because I remember racing at some of the panhandle races and, waiting for trophies to be done if we had someone was riding C with us, we wouldn’t get home until 10 or 11 o’clock, and I live in the central part of Florida. But now, being an adult, being a grown up and having to have a job, it’s nice to kind of just go, any weekend you want, and go out and have a good time...As a newer, younger generation starts to get more and more involved in FTR,
it will continually evolve. Change is always good. The main focus of FTR is to provide a fun outlet for its members to go out and ride. I think we’ll continue to evolve and make things better as the world changes. JS: How did you get into riding Enduros? NF: I didn’t get to ride as many Enduros as I wanted to this year because my work schedule got a little busier. But I think, just from riding all the marked FTR trails at Croom, they lended themselves to be more like Enduros. The Hare Scrambles, you can always go out and have fun, it’s the big event, but the Enduro stuff is the tight stuff. The - it’s you versus the track. That kind of suits me more. I really wish I could have ridden more this year. I think that’s kind of why I always ride bikes with headlights. That’s what’s near and dear to my heart. JS: Of course. So, what’s up with the Vintage ride? NF: The vintage thing, that’s the class that I recommend for everybody to go out and ride. The Evo thing, it’s fun but it’s very competitive. I found this bike on Craigslist for $350, and I put about $100 into it, and I’m out there racing Hare Scrambles. Everybody says that dirt bikes are an expensive motorsport...but I think it’s a perfect example of how you can get out and have a good time on any weekend for really inexpensively...my only concern now is that I have to keep the motor together. On the vintage bike, I usually don’t ride practice with it. It would be a lot of money to spend on it, relatively speaking. JS: What do you think about the schedule changes being proposed? Do you think it should stay as is, or what is your expert opinion on that? NF: No, I think FTR definitely needs to continually evolve. Looking at some of the research and some of the stuff online...the biggest changes we’re looking at is moving the quad classes to Sunday afternoon. There’s only three organizations in the U.S. that appear to do that and they all have their reasons for the quads running first...GNCC does it because they pride themselves on having the roughest track they could possibly
do. GNCC came out of the Blackwater 100, which was a race that, if you could just finish it, you’ve done well. The other group in Oklahoma, they do it because they have such a propensity of rocks that if the quads don’t run before them to kind of clear the rocks out, it ends up with everybody with flat tires. I think, FTR is a very unique series and we pride ourselves on being unique and we do things very unique but... there’s no reason to be different, just to be different. Be different because it’s beneficial to the series.

JS: What else is on the horizon for you? Going to make a run for president? NF: I don’t know. We’re going to have to see how work goes. But definitely the radio show more consistently. Really my next goal is trying to get the radio show off the ground at every race. JS: Do you have any sponsors or anyone in particular? NF: I don’t really have any. That’s what I need to start working on. Try to offset the cost of this stuff. JS: I think that’s the million dollar question. NF: Yea. JS: Thank you!
Racing Vintage > It is liter ally like r acing an XR10 0 on the tr ail. It has no suspension, no power. It go e s s o slow. That ’s why you have that per magr in. It is s o f un to r ide that bike. If there was a 50 s c lass, I’d be r ac ing that to o. A pitbike class would be awe s ome. The FTR Radio Show > (in addition to the f or um, Facebo ok , Twit ter, the maga zine) they will all do great things to br ing the dif f erent wagon t r ails of f amilie s at each Hare S c r amble s to ge ther. They ’ll be like a uni f ying me dium whereas ever y bo dy els e k ind of f or ms their ow n wagon tr ail and k ind of s tic k s with their ow n ground, it will be a way to build br idge s amongs t thos e groups s o F TR could be one big f amily r ather than a bunc h of di f f erent groups. The FTR Family > It ’s great s e eing pe ople f rom the F TR f amily out and about. The f amily that we e s t ablishe d within F TR , at leas t f or me, later on in lif e, you maint ain thos e conne c tions. I mean, we s till ke ep in touc h. I think that is f or me and f or a lot of F TR: lif e - long relationships.
