Tim Nordle: “WELCOME BACK BARRY MCCARTY As I sit here doing the overalls for HS 6, I see a familiar name that has been missing since this race last year. Welcome back, Barry McCarty! From your finish in this race, it appears you had a great recovery from your injury at this very race last year. Good to see you back. Good luck and be safe!” Jerry Curtis: “I wanted to Say Thanks the Gentleman named “Lenz” who helped me get my bike unstuck. I had I vine the size of a Fork wedge between the Brake and when it got to the foot peg it launched me over the bars I could not get the bike unstuck or get the vine out. A golden master rider named “Lenz” not sure if it was last name or first name helped to get me going again I thank you, sir.” Doug Lenz: “You are very welcome , hope you did good.” Bryan Faby “Yesterday my son, Ryder, stepped in a campfire at the race. We’re at Shands now and he’ll do another night here then some physical therapy and hopefully will be good to go in a few weeks. I just want to say thank you to everyone that helped care for him yesterday. It was a scary situation for him and us and everybody was very helpful. Our family appreciates it. Thanks again!” Next month:

he last few Hare Scrambles have been a wash for me, including a DNF at the Plant City race after I tried jet skiing through a small lake and sunk my bike to the fenders, ending my day. The race before that, at Samsula, was more fun for me and I managed a second place finish and better luck in the mud. The bad news, like someone said to me recently, is, “You don’t get to pick and choose your good and bad days.” The good news is that Florida is no longer under a drought; here’s hoping for no more mud races!

O ld B usiness None N ew B usiness Tim Nordle Brought three proposals to the meeting that he felt would help to elevate some problems he sees with scoring. P roposal 1 To assign permanent numbers to all members. After some discussion, this proposal was dropped. P roposal 2 MANDATORY MANUAL SCORING STOP PRIOR TO ELECTRONIC SCORING. THIS STOP WILL BE LESS THAN 2 SECONDS TO ALLOW ACCURATE READING AND RECORDING OF THE NUMBER PLATES. The purpose of this rule is to help score the racers more accurately. Currently there are a lot of riders who will not reprogram their transponders. When these riders pass thru scoring in a group, we can not tell if they recorded correctly, we just here the beep saying something was recorded. By having a mandatory manual scoring station 20-25 feet before the electronic scoring, three things happen: 1. Rider is scored correctly by the backup people. 2. They will be slowed down for the electronic
scoring, making it more accurate. 3. This rule will place one rider at a time in the scoring chicane, 2 seconds apart, no groups passing thru as it is now. This rule will also reduce the manpower required by the club for backup scoring. Clubs will only need 2 workers for backup scoring. One to write and one to call out number plate. In the event a race is muddy then the caller would also have the task of wiping the number plate so he/she can be read. The committee agreed to try this at two races to see how it will work. Motion Dan Aitken Second Allen Pearce
@ ftrmoto
Vote 14 for 0 against P roposal 3 Add time between the race ending and the start of the next race. Last season the HSC passed a rule allowing the extra 5 minutes for a rider to complete the last lap as long as he beat the checkered flag. What this has done is push all the ending times back 5 minutes and not moved the starting times. Currently there is very little time between races for resetting the computer, downloading race results, archiving the last race, resetting the live scoring, posting race results, race protests.

4. We will very possibly be seeing some new tracks on the schedule. 5. Our class structure has been consolidated again to line up more easily with other series and to allow the joint events to go more smoothly. 6. Due to lack of participation, there will not be quad classes in the motocross series. It has been a battle with promoters since day one and we have tried everything I know how to get more participation but it just has not happened. I appreciate all the support you have given and look forward to a great season.

“Run the race with endurance, the course that has been laid out for you” (Hebrews 12:1). In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

stores before Halloween? The commercialization of this time of year is amazing. With all the getting and giving, this should be the most wonderful month of the year. But in reality, for many, it’s the most depressing. There are those in our FTR family that have had to place their racing aside for the good of their family. Why? There are a multitude of reasons. Some have been hit with unexpected medical bills. Some have lost their jobs. With a family as large as ours, I can assure you that we have folks suffering. It is not my intent to be gloomy in this article. I want each of us to be grateful.
over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel,
13
praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 Being grateful is easy when times are good and everything So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was seems to be going your way. However, the Bible challenges lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word us to give thanks in the good times as well as the bad. I know concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it that I don’t always follow this rule. I can easily wallow in selfwere amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up pity just as quick as you can. So I write this to remind all of us all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, (even myself) that “tis the season” to be kind and generous to glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, our fellow man. Area 2 Board of Director, Club Representative - Azalea City Motorcycle Club
After an Azalea City Event it has always been my custom to write an article. I usually title that article; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; so here it is:
The Good begin to list it all.
.......There was so much good I personally can’t
Starting with a landowner who allowed us access to his beautiful facility after he had spent several years of very hard work and true dedication to the offroad community. The facility is open for not only mud-bogging vehicles but also for ATV/UTV trails and open riding that can be ridden like Croom. Some may have ventured over and also admired what he had done building a track for airboats that exceed 100 miles and hour in 400 feet. Not only did he allow us access, he used his extensive array of equipment to aid us with anything we needed for parking and trail prep. Did anyone notice all the mowed grass, Port-o-Johns everywhere and even complete bathroom facilities with showers and hot and cold running water and a water truck to keep down dust? I also can’t say enough about our club members who had to drop just about everything they had planned for the last three weeks to make this event happen. We watched our normal race site at Bostwick keep getting rained on every day for months. As I’m sure DDR did, we waited hoping against the odds that it would stop raining and the property would dry. However it didn’t so I contacted the Hog Waller management about using the Hog Waller site and my club members stepped up and went to work making this event happen. Putting an event together on new land with three weeks’ notice was a monumental task but my guys did it and I think with good success. You will have to be the judge of that.
December 201417
With all the above said, I can’t stop posting about the GOOD without mentioning the FTR members. What a great job of showing the owners of Hog Waller how great responsible FTR members are. The place was left clean of trash on the ground and unlike their other venues, people didn’t stay up all night drinking and getting into trouble. They were surprised how quiet it got early in the evening. The Bad.........I can only thing of a couple; NO RAIN....WHAT! We asked for it to quit raining and now we are hoping for rain. That too didn’t happen as many know. Dust and more dust was the effect of no rain. As much as my nickname indicates I have some special powers, it unfortunately is just a name. Had we received a good rain, the course would not have deteriorated as much and certainly the dust would not have been a factor.
The UGLY
........Not much here either; We had a couple injuries that are always ugly when they occur. One was a 5-year-old child that burned one of his feet pretty severally from a campfire that was left unattended and not put out from the night before. Most landowners do not allow campfires, however this one did. It was nice having the fire given the chilly nights but we should all be respectful of this privilege and make sure the fire is completely doused or buried after it is no longer being use. The other was a rider with a broken collarbone. I was told he drove himself home and said it was not big deal. He knew what it was. Speaking for everyone from ACMC, thank you very much to all that came to our event. We hope to be back at this same facility next year and we will be given more time to work on it to make the event even more enjoyable. § (Editor’s note: Thank you, Gary and ACMC. The track was awesome!)

From the Forum (on Rodman):
Will St. Laurent:
ACMC did an outstanding job. Trail was challenging as it should be. I loved the camping area; once the sun set and the campfire started, it was beautiful. Can’t beat the scenic drive in either. Thanks for hosting a great event.”
“
Shaun Foutch:
I liked the fact the location had some facilities. The pulled BBQ was great and you received a good portion of fries, too. Course was brutal (for me)! A great challenge for all I suspect. I hope you can use the location again in the future. Thanks for everyone’s hard work.”

Great race, Great property. Thanks to the land owner, I love the shower after the race.”
Robert D’Angelo:
Wait ‘til you see my video of me whining like a...well, coming to think of it, the little girls didn’t whine as much as me. Those sand tracks really kick my butt, hurt my arm and made it 1 lap. I’m sooo depressed lol..”

Hit was a rough, tough, dusty, rooted, and tight course. Just like a Hare Scrambles should be. Loved the property and loved being able to ride the trails back in the woods with my wife Sunday to watch the bikes race. Went up for a breakfast sandwich and met the property owners working the food stand. Very nice and friendly people. Great race and a great place.”
I can’t leave out all of the hard work every club member put in for the last 3 weeks to make this event happen with great success, and I can’t leave out the support our spouses, family and friends put in behind the scenes putting long hours this weekend, and I’m very proud and blessed to be associated with a great group of hard working dedicated people. Can’t wait til next year’s event. my wheels are turning with ideas to make it better. Thanks again.”

Thomas Miller:
The club did an excellent job with the different tracks. Taking advantage of the property available is always key. Having three separate tracks is a huge undertaking which not all the clubs have the resources to do. Regardless of the track layout, follow the course as marked. I’d rather see a club take the initiate of mixing it up and offering different courses then running the same course year after year only because it’s the easy thing to do or not having enough manpower to make significant changes.”
“ “
Mike Hubbard:
With the hidden unknowns in the grass who needed trees? Course was just fine in my opinion!”
Robert D’Angelo:
Thanks for making another race a success. I couldn’t help to feel for all the people that worked for over a month to make an awesome trail. Then Sunday morning when I was in my nice warm luxurious van lol. They were out in the cold wet weather rerouting the trail so we could have fun. How can we thank you enough.
“
Michael Rewis::
Thumbs up Fun race today…. even though it rained all night….the course held up well. It was slick as snot in practice and improved throughout the day. Thanks Sunrunners. Appreciate all the efforts.”

To #19x: thanks for helping me out yesterday, pulled me out of the same mud hole 3 times. Thanks brother.”
Wilbur Snider:
“
Would like to say thanks to two people working the event this weekend. I found something on the Peewee track that needed addressed he took care of it almost immediately. The other guys was riding around in a side by side and saw an adult rider doing a wheelie in the pits and he stopped him and told him I don’t care what’s wrong with your bike you don’t ride it like that in the pits there are too many kids that could run out in the road! Awesome!”
Ron Strauss::
Great layout, long track, no whoops and no dust. Thanks for a great race Sunrunners. I know how hard you all worked to put it together and it was much appreciated.

From the Forum (on Samsula):
“
Eric Berard:
Thanks to the Apollo club members and the safety guys/girls for your hard work at this event. I know first hand what you have to go through when the weather gets bad. Most of us understand that you can’t control mother nature. Thankfully it was a KOW event. I’m sure that helped boost attendance in those conditions. As a racer you just have to change your frame of mind in an event like that. Sure I wish I did not have 4 muddy race bikes and 4 muddy sets of gear to clean (again) but it was a fun trail for sure. That big sloppy field was the best part! 5th gear WOT flat tracking on a 450 is always blast. Granted I was barely making forward progress with all the tire spin!.. I’ll take that over dust any day.”
“
Jeremy Powell:
Great effort Apollo! Thanks for a really great event. Practice was MUCH different than the racing conditions. I am hopeful that you guys get some help from Mother Nature in the coming weeks to help your efforts at the Enduro! Thanks again for all the hard work!”

Editor’s Note : Seventeenyear-old Dylan Rash turns heads for his red hair and the fact that he’s raced motocross, GNCCs and FTR Hare Scrambles for more than half his life. He’s a self-proclaimed natural although speed does run in the Rash family, with Dylan’s dad, Randy, this year’s new FTR Hare Scrambles Chairman, an offroad A rider and Dylan’s brother, Max, a top amateur motocrosser. This season, Dylan’s battling for the A Open championship with FTR championships in both A 250 and A 200 FTR. FTR Magazine recently tracked him down to find out his plans for next year, his thoughts on FTR and who he turns to for advice.

JS: Hey, Dylan. How’s it going? DR: Pretty good. Just getting home. JS: Cool. From where? DR: The dirt bike shop, actually. JS: Nice. What’d you get? DR: A front tire. JS: Sweet. So, thank you for taking the time for this interview. I know you’ve been riding FTR for a while but what was your first dirt bike memory? DR: Oh, shoot. (Long pause.) I’d have to say in Orlando at the Supercross that used to be in Orlando, I did the KTM Junior Challenge there. That was pretty cool. JS: Nice. How was that. DR: That’s when I got really into it, like I wanted to start racing after that. JS: How’d you get into FTR? DR: My dad got me into it but before that I was racing motocross because that’s when my brother was racing and we’d always travel around together and I would do the motocrosses. JS: Then you switched over? DR: Yeah, once my brother went to college I switched over to FTR, really. JS: How old are you now? DR: 17 JS: No way. I thought you were way older? So what was your first FTR memory? DR: When I was doing motocross I actually raced one FTR race at the Seminole Tribe Motocross on my Cobra
“ D ylan Rash out
front
December 2014
and later on I went into 65B and then eventually 65A and Minis. JS: Nice. What was the highlight for you? Were you just a natural? DR: Yeah, I’d say I was. (Laughs.) DR: I think so. I mean, I took to it pretty well. JS: Right. What was your first reaction to FTR coming from motocross? DR: It’s definitely a lot more laid back. It’s a lot less stressful and you get everything done in one race so it’s nice. You don’t have to go to the line for eight motos. But I guess when you get up into Sunday, it gets back to be being pretty stressful but that comes with it. JS: Yeah, so how did you get to Sunday? How was riding on Saturday? DR: Actually, I only rode a couple Junior races and the Junior races that I rode I was on a 105 Supermini. My first junior race I raced Junior B at Gatorback and I overalled Saturday. That was my first Junior B race. JS: That’s crazy! DR: Yeah. At Gatorback. JS: What’s your current ride? DR: A 300. I can’t seem to get away from the two strokes. JS: You don’t like the 450? DR: I’ve ridden my brother’s a bunch. He’s got a KX450. Depending on how this year goes, I might have one next year.
No, I don’t surf but, actually, the only thing I really do is ride motocross.” - DR

I haven’t raced one race without him. I don’t think I would be able to. He’s the biggest help I have for sure with that whole side. He’s the man.” - Dylan below with dad, Randy.
“Just your local ginger trying to go big.”
36Florida Trail Riders Magazine JS: You’re going to switch? DR: I might. I’ve been thinking about it. If I move, I mean I’m going to go to AA, I figure I might as well just do everything. JS: We’ll see right? DR: We’ll see how this year goes. JS: Are you in school? DR: Yeah, I do share time. I go to a technical college and study welding and then I go back to my regular high school and do a couple classes. JS: Wow, welding is pretty cool. DR: Yeah, I like it. I was interested in it so I thought I would try it. JS: Where do you live again? DR: Fort Lauderdale. JS: Do you surf and stuff, then? DR: No, I don’t surf but, actually, the only thing I really do is ride motocross. JS: Nice. Sounds like a rough life. DR: Yeah, I like going out on the water though. I go out my buddys’ boats whenever I get the chance or have a free weekend to go out fishing and what not. JS: Who else is in your family? DR: I have an older brother, Max. He’s 24. JS: And your mom and dad? DR: Yeah. JS: Any dogs? DR: I’ve got a dog named Rider. JS: What kind of car or truck do you drive? DR: I drive a GMC 1500. JS: White or black? DR: It’s actually like a tannish silver-ish kind of color. JS: Tannish silverish? Like dirt? DR: Yeah, close to that. JS: How many trophies would you say that you have? DR: Oh, God. I have no idea. My mom just throws them away now. The little ones, like the plaques and stuff, we’ll keep for a little bit but then they just start stacking up. We’ve kept the big ones from the nationals and like the 24 Hour from this past year. JS: Do you like riding at night at the 24 Hour? DR: Oh, yeah. That was really gnarly. I didn’t get to

ride too much at night because the race got delayed a little but I think I rode at like 5 in the morning and it was actually dark but it got light quick. Honestly, it’s a lot of fun riding at night especially in the woods. You can see pretty much everything. JS: Yeah, so what are you picky about on your bike? DR: Mainly my handlebars and my suspension; I’ve been getting really into my suspension with Tom Fleming and stuff. But other than that, I’ll ride it. JS: What about your number, 19? DR: That’s been the family number forever. My brother had it and I was really young so said I wanted the same number as my brother and ever since then it’s been the same. JS: Cool and can you talk about your dad’s role at the races? He’s been at every race with you? DR: Yeah, I haven’t raced one race without him. I don’t think I would be able to. He’s the biggest help I have for sure with that whole side. He’s the man. He takes care of it for me. JS: Have you been riding a lot with Garrett (Edmisten)? DR: Yeah, we’ve taken a couple riding trips. We went up to South Carolina to our buddy Jesse Robinson’s house and went riding with him in the hills and met up with some GNCC guys. It was pretty cool. JS: Yeah, you can really tell. When I watch you guys come through the chicane sometimes, it’s like you guys ride the same or you mimic each other. It’s pretty cool. DR: Yeah, style-wise. JS: Yeah, it stands out, for sure. What’s your best overall so far this season? DR: It might be fourth or a third. I can’t really remember. I’m usually in the top 5, top 10 for sure every weekend. JS: Are you moving up to AA regardless if you win the Open championship? DR: If I win Open, for sure, but I haven’t really decided yet. You kind of go to AA and it’s like, Wow, my FTR career is kinda over and then I just have to deal with Garrett. JS: Yeah, but it will make you faster. DR: Yeah, I’ve got plenty of competition now in Open A.
“I’m only 17; I have
plenty of time and I think I have plenty of talent to do it. I’m kind of in a crappy spot to be traveling all over the country. It takes me 8 hours to get out of state and it’s usually another 6 hours to get to the race from there.” - DR

JS: Do you ride Enduros ever? DR: No, but I’m going to for the KOW (King of the Woods). JS: Do you like Enduros? DR: Yeah, I like them. They’re different. You kinda got to get used to it when you’re starting out but they’re fun. They’re long. JS: It’s a different kind of riding. So, what about your training? DR: I road bike and go every once in a while but I’m big into running and I train with my wrestling team at school and that’s a really good workout so that’s mainly what I do. JS: Do you wrestle with them, too? DR: Yeah, every once in a while but mainly just do all the cardio and running, way too many flights of stairs. JS: What about your goals for the future? Do you want to go pro? DR: I don’t know. I’m only 17; I have plenty of time and I think I have plenty of talent to do it. I’m kind of in a crappy spot to be traveling all over the country. It takes me 8 hours to get out of state and it’s usually another 6 hours to get to the race from there but I may be like to depending on where I go after I finish high school. I’m sure my dad would be 100 percent behind it. JS: Well, I was gonna say. He would drive you! DR: Yeah. JS: That would be fun. Cool. Does your dad tell you any advice or anything? DR: I mean, mainly nowadays, he just tells me to be smart and be safe, really. He used to give me tips when I was little on how to ride and what to do but nowadays it’s either my brother or Garrett or whoever I’m riding with giving me some pointers. My dad will point out stuff for me when we’re at the race track or the practice track, he’ll tell me what I’m doing wrong or where I can be faster. JS: Oh, so now that he’s the chairman, he could be giving you top secrets? DR: Right? I wish he would. He never tells me the good lines or nothing. JS: That’s funny. So anyone you would like to thank or who is helping you out. DR: First of all, my parents, my dad and mom. Tom Fleming and TF Racing Suspension have been a huge help the past years. He’s done a lot for me and I appreciate him. Palmetto Motorsports and Billy, Todd and Mario. Spectro Oils. G2 Photos. Smith. Troy Lee. Garrett and Bob Edmisten. Paul Lucas. DSP. Squidbillies Racin’. ONESIX Films. FMF. Miami MX. DZP and everyone in Palm Beach Track and Trail. JS: What’s the best thing about FTR for you? DR: For me, I think it’s the people in FTR. It’s like a big family. Usually. Sometimes you get in a little bit of trouble but generally FTR’s just a great place to be on the weekends. JS: That’s right. Thank you and good luck this weekend. DR: Thank you. §
