[pictured above: After the first FTR Radio show at the Brooksville Hare Scrambles. Kurt Lucas, in the back with his eyes closed, helped out on one of the mics, along with Nic Frey and I, and a few fast folks like the ones standing and seated in the pic. Kurt recently told me of his inspiration for creating his website: floridadirtbike.com - read where he
found his idea later in this magazine. Just wanted to publicly thank Nic for the radio show coming along and your sweet motorhome for the crowd. I heard a few people tuned in, and after we get the feedback and mic issues worked out, I believe the FTR members will love hearing other members banter back and forth on the radio. Soon, we hope to have downloadable podcasts for members to keep up if they missed an event. Keep up right now: floridatrailriders.org/ftrblog. - JS

I
think one of the healthiest things you can do, is try something new (although there are some obvious exceptions to things you should try). So once the hectic semester had finished up and Christmas break had begun, my boyfriend decided we needed a little down time…so we took out pitbikes to Croom. There isn’t much more fun than riding pitbikes. I have a DR-Z 110 and my Scott has a KLX110 so when time allows we have mini moto races in the backyard and usually other friends or family will come over and join in. Taking the 110s to Croom; however, provided a completely different experience. I was really skeptical about riding the 110s through all of that thick sand—when Croom comes to mind, for me, I think of all the time I’ve spent in the “Sand Hill” area— which for anyone who hasn’t been, is at the front of the park and is thick, thick, sugar sand. Now on my big bike, I’m down to sling sand all day everyday but I didn’t expect to have fun doing so on a bike that would be peg deep in every turn. We tried something different and started in the middle of the park and spent most of the day in the trails! It was a COMPLETELY different experience than I expected and probably the hardest my 110 has been ridden and the most fun I have ever had on it as well. To mix things up even more, it wasn’t just Scott and I who went. Scott’s sister, Amanda, her friend Cara, Cara’s father (who is an old trail rider from way back), and Scott’s dad (who raced mx for years), all went riding too! It was only Cara’s second time or so on a dirtbike so that too offered an entirely fresh perspective to the day. It was kind of nostalgic remembering what it was like when I first started riding and how
Chicks Who Rip often I fell! She was an awesome sport about it though and I hung back with her and helped her for the first part of the morning while the others played through the trees ahead. She actually ended up riding my 110 because she had been on a CRF230 and shifting, along with balancing, and looking for trees was a bit overwhelming at first. Being able to do those things simultaneously, without even thinking about it, is something I realized all of us who ride regularly really take for granted. Cara was a real champ about it though and did an awesome job. Once we reached the front of the park we switched back and she handled that CRF by herself for the rest of the day! That, was where the REAL fun began. Leaving the front pit at Croom, Scott and I had an all out race ALL the way back to the truck. Both on 110’s it was a close battle. Our bikes are about the same speed but me being about twenty to twenty-five pounds lighter was a real advantage and I had plenty of opportunities to sling some sand in his face. Some parts of the trails were so wide open that I was 3rd gear tapped on my bike for minutes at a time. Then we would go through a turn so whooped out that we’d end up doubling through it. I haven’t laughed so hard on a bike in forever! We were almost to the truck and Scott had just sneaked around me before an S-turn, I wasn’t going to let him beat me. I squared up my bike and slid out on a root, ended up driving my 110

IV. New Business • 2013 Banquet off of a tree and falling ontop of it getting my leg and stomach stuck in the rear wheel. That was some ridiculous bruising over Christmas— literally you could see the tire marks across my leg and stomach but my sturdy little 110 was just fine, and still running so after doing a quick check over myself to make sure I didn’t actually hurt myself, Scott came putting back wondering where I had gone. I think the thing that hurt the most was that he had beaten me. We then spent the rest of the day just playing around in the local trails, attempting to hill climb, and goofing off. It was the most fun I had over Christmas break! Like I said, I think one of the best things you can do is try something new every now and then. Sometimes things end up being a lot more fun than you initially expect them to be and taking the pit bikes to Croom was just what I needed. I can’t wait to do it again! - LG

Kurt Lucas [Editor’s note: I’ve seen Kurt Lucas around the races for a few years now, but he’s 10 years my junior, so we don’t talk much more than through Facebook or a wave here-and-there at the track.
That was until Kurt started a blog at floridadirtbike.com and then, a few weeks ago, started selling bracelets advertising his site. That’s when I decided we had to talk and arranged to interview him over the phone after the Brighton Hare Scrambles. JS: Hey, Kurt. How was race? KL: It was good. I got fifth. I was riding really good - I had a really good start but there was a puddle in the start and of course I had to hit it so my feet flew off so I was like in last place pretty much. So, I worked my way up through the pack and I was running in fourth the whole time, and then Trevor McCabe fell over right in front of me and it kind of messed me up and I hit a tree with my hand, I gave it a high five, and I jammed my wrist pretty good so a fifth place is pretty good. Two in a row of fifths. I can’t complain. JS: Oh, that’s cool. So, I wanted to start with asking you about your first dirt bike memory. When did you start riding? KL: I remember I got this little black four wheeler when I was like 3, and I used to jump it in my front yard and that’s where it all started. JS: So, you started on a four wheeler? Why was that? KL: Because, at the time, my dad’s raced dirt bikes his whole life but then he got a four wheeler that way we could ride together. So he rode four wheelers at that time and that’s how I got one. I only rode it for like a year and then I switched to a little 50. JS: That’s cool. So when did you start racing? KL: I think around 4 at the local motocross track down in Homestead. Then some FTR. JS: What was the first class you entered in FTR? KL: Peewee C JS: Oh, so you started like legit Peewee C. KL: Yea. I’m pretty sure I did one lap in 15 minutes. JS: That’s awesome. What are some of your greatest memories coming up to the Open A class where you are now? KL: Well, I first learned that holding the throttle wide open is not a good idea at Bithlo one time on my 50 because it stuck wide open and it was really scary. I hit a fence. And then just being at the track with my dad’s been really fun but I was terrible up until I moved to Sundays. I got good somehow. JS: Really? Why? Because the track’s harder? KL: I think it’s because I started riding the Evo bike. It’s made me a smoother rider. JS: Why? KL: Because there’s no brakes and stuff so you can’t like charge the corners, you actually have to ground them out and look ahead. You can’t just slam on the brakes every corner.
February 2013 | 33
JS: Interesting. How old are you? KL: 19 JS: Are you still trying to move forward with riding and all that? KL: Yea. My ultimate goal is AA by 25 so I’m giving myself a big gap to make it. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. I’m pretty happy where I’m at now, you know, I never thought I would be this fast back in the day. JS: Do you ride motocross for training? KL: Yea, motocross is pretty much all we ride because down in Miami, that’s all we have. We have Seminole Tribe MX and then now we have Miami MX so that’s all we really ride unless we go up to Okeechobee and do some trails. But I don’t know. I don’t really like riding trails when I’m not racing. I’d rather ride the MX track. JS: It’s probably a better workout for the quickness. KL: Yea, I feel like trails are more boring when you’re just riding, not like race mode. JS: Yea. Have you ridden anywhere else around the country? KL: I’ve been to Red Bud. I raced there. Then I went to the Snowshoe GNCC and that was really hard. Then we do Durhamtown every once in a while and stuff like that, the Carolinas. JS: So what do you think about FTR? KL: I think it’s great as an organization and how so many people do it. Honestly, going to the FTR races is my favorite thing to do in the whole world. I don’t get that joy anywhere else. JS: I know. It’s like that for a lot of people. KL: Yea. JS: So, tell me about college at FGCU (Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers where he is roommates with fellow Open A rider Tommy Hill.) You’re studying journalism? KL: Yea. JS: What do you want to do with that? KL: My big thing was I always wanted to write movie scripts when I was a kid, but I figured I just needed to go into something that would help me out with riding and I didn’t want to do English either because I feel like with journalism, you can branch out with more stuff for that but eventually it would be cool to work for Racer X or TransWorld. JS: That’s cool. I also wanted to ask you about floridadirtbike.com. KL: OK. What did you want to ask me? JS: I mean, where did that idea come from? KL: Honestly, I was on no1jenn.com and the FTR blog one day and JS: No way! KL: Yea, I was and I was like, ‘This would be pretty cool.’ I always like looked at it every once in a while and thought it would be a cool idea to do something like that so then one day, in my dorm, I was really bored continued on next page

so I looked up Wordpress to see what the deal was with it and got a free account and from there it I guess it became floridadirtbike.com. So you’re my inspiration. JS: Wow. I feel so honored. Now there’s bracelets and everything! I want to hire you! KL: You should. JS: How did you learn about all this stuff, anyway? You blog, edit video, Tweet. You haven’t even started journalism school yet. I’m impressed. KL: In high school, my English teacher had a blog to tell us what homework we had and stuff so I thought that was a pretty cool idea: write your own stuff and people can see it. JS: Yea. So, what do you think FTR could do better, if anything? KL: I don’t know. I think I have some pretty cool ideas like the 125 Pro class. I’ve been trying to push that. I think if they added that, it would be cool. It seems like there’s a lot of whining going on if you ever go on the Forum. It’s pretty sad. I think the people, not the organization of FTR, but the people in FTR just need to be happy with what they have and stop complaining so much.
JS: Definitely agree. Tell me about Kurtalicious . Where did that come from? You’ve had it on your bike before. KL: Yea, this girl in ninth grade, her name was Nicole Lister so one day I called her Nicole Licious out of nowhere and then she called me Kurtalicious and it kind of stuck. JS: That’s cool. At least it came from a girl, right? KL: Yea. And then like two weeks later, every girl in my high school started calling me it. Like they made shirts that said “I heart Kurtalicious.” JS: Yea. I was going to ask: you seem to be a ladies man? KL: No. I’m not. JS: Yea, right. (Insert picture of group of girls holding up Kurt’s butt patch.) KL: Yea, I get like three pictures of those a year so I just like recycle them through my Facebook so it always seems like I have a lot but I really don’t. JS: How’s your dad (after his helicopter ride out of the Daytona Dirt Riders Hare Scrambles)? continued on next page

February 2013 | 37 JS: What? Really? KL: Yep. She did two laps. I’m very proud of her. JS: Wow. That’s awesome. KL: Yea, and she just started riding in November. JS: Wow. We’ll have to talk to her next! KL: You should. JS: That’s cool. Maybe at the next race? KL: I’m racing a quad there.
“
O n F our strokes: This is the first year I’ ve ever had a four stroke in my whole entire life . I think , for my riding style , it ’ s definitely better because I like to lug it and I’ m not really on the pipe or anything , so I think that ’ s why I do better on it .
JS: Cool. We have to give a huge shout out to Glenn Gardner for some of his photos are featured in your article. KL: Glenn is the man. He comes over every once in a while because he only lives like 15 minutes away from me. So we hang out a lot and we park together at the races. He’s awesome. The races aren’t the same when he’s not there. He’s like the life of the party. JS: I know. What are some of your words of wisdom? KL: I’d say, follow your dreams and don’t do drugs. And as far as riding goes, just have fun. If you’re not having fun, then you need to change something up. Don’t take it too seriously. It’s just a race. It’s not a job. JS: Yea, for sure. If you’re not having fun, you’re going to get hurt, right? KL: Yea, back in the day when I was a terrible rider in last place Junior B, 125 C and all of that, Palmer (Lynch) lapped me twice once race and he was in my class. JS: Wow. KL: Yea, that’s how bad I was. And that was my best race. But it feels good now because my dad, he never told me he was disappointed in me but I could just tell he was so disappointed that I sucked. He had the kid that sucked. You know? And my little brother was winning everything in the 65 class and I’m on my 144 in third gear the whole time because I didn’t rev it up. I think he’s happy now because I’m faster. JS: That’s awesome. Sadly awesome. Do you have any sponsors? KL: Yea, G2 photos; HBD MotoGrafx, floridadirtbike.com - I sponsor myself; my family, my mom, dad, step mom, step dad, Tanya Steindl and Sally. It’s a dog. She makes me go fast. JS: Cool. Whatever works. Thank you. KL: Thank you. You’re the best.
KL: He’s pretty good. He actually rode some this weekend. He still thinks he can beat me. I’m sure he could definitely put up a fight. That’s like been our thing ever since I got to B class: my goal was to always beat my dad and I could never do it in a race. Then when I first got my 250 two stroke and I was running A 250 and we were at our practice track and I actually beat him in one little moto and I always bring that up to him. Then, when he got hurt, I was really upset because he was hurt and even more upset because I never got a chance to beat my dad straight up in a race, But he’s making a comeback so he’s about to get
whooped. JS: Are you the only child? KL: Kind of. I have a step sister and a step brother. They’re both younger. JS: That’s cool. KL: Yep. My sister’s first race was this weekend on my dad’s bike.
