Postponed! Hare Scrambles #1 is now CFTR’s September 22 and 23 event in Bartow. The RCTR’s Hare Scrambles is canceled until further notice.
RCDR must announce - WE WILL HAVE TO POSTPONE and RESCHEDULE to a later date!!!!!!!

We could not overcome the poor conditions due the inundation of water in N.E. Florida. It prevented us from creating a SAFE and ENJOYABLE race course this year. Zoning restrictions in another county prevented us from using new land, and we'll have time to work on that issue, plus we have another land option, which may be a more suitable location in the future. YES, this is official--SORRY and good luck to the other clubs dealing with Mother Nature in the future.

Anyone know a doctor that would prescribe some meds for RACE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS? From the Forum:
Joe Steidl points out: “ I noticed on the flyer that the 96db sound limit is for all. Per the ‘11-’12 Rulebook Ch III L7, “All competition machines manufactured from 1987 and prior years shall be exempt from this standard.” That would of course exempt Evo and Vintage Classes. I want to make sure I’m compliant, and hopefully save the Club some hassle at Tech, so please clarify. This is not to be confused with Spark Arrestors, which are required for all except Peewee. Mike Belle: The rule book always takes precedence over the flyer. Vintage and Evo bikes will not be checked for sound level.

just returned home the banquet long enough to drop a few pictures in the August issue, which I hope holds you off until the September magazine hits your mailboxes. I hope everyone who attended the banquet enjoyed themselves and had a chance to catch up with their friends and fellow FTR members before the new season starts this weekend with the first race at Bostwick MX! If you are planning on attending, try rounding up a few more members and starting a MX team; Tucker Rocky is providing each team with a free canopy and HBD MotoGrafx is pitching in team banners. There’s never been a better time to ride FTR MX! hank you to everyone who helped put on this year’s banquet and awards celebration, and a special thanks to the vendors who donated products to benefit the FTR Scholarship, which raised more than $9,000! y favorite part of the banquet was attending the General Membership Meeting where I learned more about FTR and those who continue to fight for our right to ride. Please visit the FTR website for details on how you can get more involved, sit in on meetings and let your voice be heard. Check out the FTR Facebook page for a link to a short member survey about the banquet! We are looking for ideas on where to host it next year. - JS

I agree. I have been to several FTR, SETRA, a National/AMA enduro banquet, and FTR is the bee’s knees when it comes to banquets. Everything was polished, professional, well run, and the trophies and swag were awesome. Thanks to all who made it happen that way!

“Grand Utah Roulette”

A report from dixiedualsport.com

Prelude
to the ride
Ah...Where do I begin? Jack contacted me around Thanksgiving of 2011 and we discussed a plan that would eventually cumulate into the “Grand Utah Roulette” ride. I enjoy riding with Jack as he prepares well for a trip like this. I’m usually the one that plans the route, makes the reservations and develops the general logistics of a ride. It’s nice to take a more passive role in a very complicated ride..By passive, I mean I contributed almost nothing other than converting Jacks Waypoints into an actual route. But I was very excited about the ride and in fact I had all my gear (including clothes) on the bike as early as the beginning of February. I’d strap everything down and then pull it off analysing what packed item I might be able to do without. A place for everything and I knew where each item was. My biggest hurtle to overcome was transportation to Utah and back. I solicited a number of people I thought could do the ride and make the trip. But every request met with the same answer… ”Sorry, not this year”. I remember Jack asking me around January if I’d found some travelling partners. The question he really wanted to ask was if I was going. I told him, “I’m going! First, you simply decide to go and then you fill in the blank spots on how to get there”. I was going! I even threw up a listing on the FTR site hoping to get a response. But much as I’d encountered on the Dixie forum it was ‘”I’d love to, but not this time”. I’d come down to shipping the bike out and back and flying out which would have costs about $1,800 when I received an email from Dan and Tom asking about taking part in the ride. They committed at Devils Creek and soon everything was falling into place. Fast forward to June 14th, where I met Tom at his house in Fruitland Park around 6:00am. We quickly loaded my bike and gear and headed off to pick up Dan. It would be a long 36 hour drive to Moab. To answer the obvious question most of you would ask....Yes, it is a looooong way out West. But here’s the thing..... and you just can’t get around this. They don’t make country like this around here.
Besides, the ride out becomes part of the adventure of this ride. Each of you would have signed up if it were easy. No, this ride would require real commitment.
In all we’d cover about 2100 miles one way and cross though nine states. And I can tell you that Texas and Florida seemed to take about 35 of the 36 hours to drive through. I can’t tell you how many trains we chased along the way. Yes it’s a long way out to Utah....But the Payoff...Yes, what a payoff you’ll receive at the end of the ride. - Bert

First, A n
intro
Our gang of seven desert rats converged on Moab Friday night and organized gear before hitting the trail on Saturday. Tom, Dan and Bert needed sleep after driving nearly 40 hours straight. Drk and Jak serviced motos after nine month of storage. My KTM 530 suffered a dead battery, flat front tire and the rear brake line needed bleeding. Drk mounted new tires, changed the oil and checked the sprockets on his KTM 450. His counter sprocket looked worn, but surely another thousand miles could be squeezed out of it. Also, Edd and Alex had ridden over from Denver via snow covered Imogene Pass and required a solid night sleep before heading into the searing canyons of southern Utah. We rented a cabin in Moab, but I preferred to sleep under the stars. It was after midnight before I fell asleep listening to the wind rustling leaves in a nearby cottonwood tree. I slept soundly and dreamed of standing on the edge of the grandest canyon of them all. (continued on next page)

Day 1 - Moab to Devils Pocket
We paid the bill at Zax’s for what would be our last real meal together. It was high noon and we headed out of Moab together rolling smoothly along the south shore of the mighty Colorado River towards Kane Springs Canyon. Climbing steadily on the rocky road to Hurrah Pass I could feel my pannier needed a slight adjustment. We all stopped and soaked in the rugged beauty of Canyonlands. Pannier secured, our merry band of desert riders continued towards Lockhart Basin. Bert and I had ridden Lockhart Basin two years ago and ran into a significant challenge exiting Lockhart Canyon after getting lost in a the maze of crimson halls. This time we followed the cairns and still made one wrong turn before reaching the steep rocky section at the head of the canyon. The climb is rated double black diamond for jeeps. I would rate it single black diamond for motos. Either way, it’s tough but not impossible. I was riding sweep and last in the queue behind Tom. Tom clicked his KTM 450 into first and chugged about half way up the climb but lost traction and stalled. On Tom’s second attempted the engine conked out as if the choke was on. The temperature in the canyon was over 100 degrees and Tom’s gas cap vent tube had clogged and causing the plastic fuel tank to inflate like a balloon. Boiling fuel started flowing freely from the carb under the pressure. Tom shut off the petcock valve and the fuel tank swelled even more. He removed the gas cap and relieved the dangerous building pressure. Tom removed the offending vent hose and replaced it with breather hose from another part of the KTM. Bert not willing to burn any more daylight, hopped on Tom’s KTM and finished the job. The main challenge at Lockhart Canyon was behind us. A few more single black diamond climbs were between us and our first critical gas stop at Needles Outpost. We pushed the pace on the easy sections arrived at Needles Outpost shortly before it closed for the day. We pumped the precious liquid into our machines and gladly paid $6.50 per gallon (cash only). After refuelling, Tom informed the group that he had seen enough and intended to circle back to Moab on pavement alone. One down....six to go. From Needles Outpost we suffered a brief section of tarmac before entering Canyonlands National Park. While paying five bucks each at the self service kiosk a friendly bozo tourist warned us that the road ahead ended at a place called Elephant Hill. We thanked him for the faulty intel and continued on knowing that Elephant Hill marked the beginning of a rugged back country route that included Devils Lane, Bobby’s Hole, (continued on next page)

Ruin Park and Beef Basin. We tackled Elephant Hill at seven o’clock and traversed extreme terrain for another hour to Devils Pocket where we decided to bush camp. What’s for dinner at the end of Day 1? Jerky and water. Grand Utah Roulette had now entered the simple existence phase of eat, sleep and ride. (continued on next page)

Day 2, Part 1
Up with the sun in the desert. The best riding happens early in the morning before searing heat threatens to melt the knobs off your tires. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of proper hydration and nutrition on these tours. A small nutritional miscalculation can wreak havoc on a person’s digestive system, or worse, cause debilitating heat stroke. I filled a 100 ounce Camelbak bladder and a 24 ounce plastic bottle with water at every fuel stop. I usually drank all 124 ounces before the next scheduled gas stop, often taking a swig before thirst reminded me to drink. We broke camp at Devils Pocket and headed southeast though Devils Lane. The dusty jeep road coursed through beautiful valleys flanked by sandstone formations. The morning trek presented little challenge until Bobby’s Hole. Drk attacked the ascent out of Bobby’s Hole first and struggled before the first switchback. Five anxious spectators, including me, watched Drk’s progress with dismay. He made it over the top, but kicked up plenty of silt and rock in the process. Still sitting at the foot of the climb like a scared rabbit, I suggested we unload

any unnecessary items and portage to the top. Not only would this make the bikes more but A u g umanageable st 2012 | 17 would also allow an opportunity to scout a clean line. I went next after Drk and barely made it. I burned a lot of energy in the process and my hands were shaking as I removed my helmet and gloves. Bert, Alex and Edd cleared it too. Now it was Dan’s turn. He said he wasn’t feeling 100 percent, so I reluctantly offered to ride his DRZ to the top. Let me tell you, it’s not easy to hop on someone else’s bike and expect to successfully ride the toughest section of the day. It was “go time”, “now or never”, “do or die”. Plus, I had an audience waiting for something spectacular to happen. I’m happy to report that they were all disappointed as I narrowly avoided catastrophe.
“Yes, this section was called “Bobby’s Hole” on the maps but we had a few other things to call it this morning.” - Bert

Day 2, Part 2
With Bobby’s Hole behind us, we reloaded the bikes and rolled through Ruin Park and Beef Basin without incident. Motoring south on Gooseberry Road in Manti-LaSal National Forest I wondered if all the high drama had abated. Bert, Dan and I paused for a moment in a thicket of massive pine trees to regroup. Dan said his stomach was giving him fits and proceeded to violently disgorge the contents of his gut. Not good. All of a sudden dehydration had become an unwelcome companion for Dan. Hite Marina on Lake Powell was our next gas stop, but it was more than 50 miles away. If Dan could limp into Hite without fainting, then he could force down fluids, rest and possibly recover. Bert successfully nursed Dan to Hite, but after careful consideration Dan decided to throw in the towel and return to Moab. Bert, a faithful friend, would escort Dan back to Moab. To make matters worse, Edd’s WR250 began running poorly on Gooseberry Road. The engine sporadically flamed out for no apparent reason. Bad gas? Clogged injector? Fouled spark plug? Failing fuel pump? Edd and Alex pulled into Hite ambivalent about whether to continue to Grand Canyon or return to Moab for repairs. We discussed the matter over frozen Haagan-Daz bars since the temperature outside was well over 100 degrees. Unable to justify the risk of total engine failure in the desert, Edd had no choice but to return to Moab with Alex as support. R ead the rest of this tale on dixiedualsport. com!

Editor’s Note: Cody Thomas, the 2011/2012 Overall B Highpoint Champion, was Facebooking from his
RV on the way to Durhamtown, Ga. when I contacted him for an interview the week before the banquet. We caught up when he returned to Florida.
JS: When did you start riding dirt bikes? CT: I think I got my first dirt bike when I was like 10, and I didn’t start racing until I was about 12 years old but it was on an 85, and that’s how it all started. JS: Did your dad ride or how did you guys get into it? CT: No, I don’t really know how it came about. I just always wanted a dirt bike and then my parents got me one and that was it.
JS: So, they were supportive? CT: Yeah, my mom didn’t like it at first but I don’t know it’s a good way to keep the family together. We hang out every weekend at all the races, you know, all of us. It’s a family sport. JS: Are you the only child? CT: I am.
JS: Lucky you! Just kidding...So, did you jump
right into FTR or how did you get into it? CT: No, I started off racing at Sunshine MX and my friend got hurt and then so my parents were like, ‘Well, we don’t want you to race motocross anymore,’ so I heard about FTR and we just joined it. JS: You still do a little bit of motocross, don’t you? CT: Yeah, I do. We’re going to race the FTR MX season. JS: Nice! I’ll be there! So, which one do you like more? CT: I like motocross more but, I don’t know, I’m not the one making the rules. JS: Yeah, are you excited that FTR brought back the MX series? CT: Yeah, I am. As long as they don’t start canceling races, everybody’s going to go to them. Last year they stopped it after five races.
Cody Thomas August 2012 | 23
JS: I think it will be a lot better this time around. CT: I hope so. JS: Anyway, we have the banquet coming up. Didn’t you win the 50/50 raffle a few years ago? CT: Yeah, two years ago, I won it two years in a row. JS: That’s crazy. And you gave it back, right? CT: Yeah, both times. JS: Incredible. CT: Yeah, well I mean you know it was going to a good cause so it was OK. I’m pretty spoiled anyway.
JS: Nice. What are you riding next year? CT: Well, I’m riding A250 for the Hare Scrambles and then for Motocross, I don’t know, I’ll probably just run B250 since you can drop a class. JS: So, you’re going to go up a bike? CT: Yeah, we actually went up to KTM World not too long ago and got a KTM 250 two stroke. JS: Wow. Are you excited? CT: Yeah, it’s so nice. We just got back from Durhamtown.
JS: Yeah, how was that? CT: It was fun. We went up there with some FTR guys and we had the good time. JS: Do you like two stroke better? CT: I like the two stroke more. I mean, the four stroke is just so heavy and it’s just I feel like I can’t ride it good at all. JS: Plus the two stroke is what we grew up, you know? CT: Yeah, I had one 250 four stroke and I ran it in Junior B

and I think my best finish was a third place all season. JS: Wow. So, what was your first class that you entered when you were 12? CT: I ran 85 Beginner at Sunshine MX and my number was 12. JS: Then you moved up through Mini to Junior to B? CT: Yeah, I ran Minis and then I got the 250 four stroke and I ran Junior B, and then I broke my leg JS: Oh, no! CT: It was a good thing though it made me fast because then after that I started winning Junior B races and then I got promoted to Junior A and then went to Sunday and that’s where I am now. JS: Junior A to B200. That’s like a huge jump there? CT: Well, I actually went from Junior A to C200 the last race of the season two seasons ago at Dirty Foot, and I got like 11th overall and it was like a big deal...I was just out there because we didn’t know what we were going to do next season. We didn’t already want to start getting promotion points without the season starting yet. Everybody got real mad about that...it was my first Sunday race.
Cody Thomas
JS: So, you said your number was 12 and now you’re 112 now. CT: Yeah, my number was 12 but when we came over to FTR, I tried to get it and couldn’t get it so we just slapped a 1 on the front of that and I don’t know, it just kind of stuck, you know.
JS: Yeah. Do you train or ride road bikes or anything? CT: Yeah, I go to Golds Gym. I try to go about four or five days a week but it usually doesn’t work if there’s a race; we leave Friday after school. Then I have Pete Rose who always helps me, giving me healthy things to eat and showing me new

JS: Yeah, that’s cool. I saw something online about the Military Academy. Did you go there? CT: Yeah, I still do. I’m a senior. It’s a good school but it sucks you know wearing a uniform, full pants to school everyday in the hot sun. Being outside and not being able to move. Sweat’s dripping off your face and you can’t wipe it off or anything though. JS: Are you planning on going into the military? CT: No, not at all. JS: So, you have one more year of school? CT: Yeah, then I’m going to FGCU in Ft. Myers. JS: Are you going to continue to race, you think? CT: Yeah, I am. I probably won’t do as much riding but I’ll be there for every race. I’m just going to leave the bike at my parents’ and meet them there. JS: That’s cool. What do you want go to school for, do you know? CT: I don’t know, yet. It’s becoming quite the issue. My parents are always pressuring me but it’s like, I just don’t know what I want to do. JS: Just do something you like. Are you looking forward to anything next season? CT: I don’t know. I’m just hoping I do good in A250. In B200, it was like I won a lot of races and I know it’s not going to be like that in A250 and I hope I just don’t get all down on myself, you know?
stuff to do, like get on the row machine. When we went up to Durhamtown, he was making me run 30-minute motos. He’s a good guy. He helps me out a lot. JS: Talk about the Shane Watts school you took one time? CT: Yeah, not too long ago. That was pretty school. They taught you a lot of stuff, actually. He had some GNCC guy, Jesse Robinson, helping him out there. JS: What else do you like about FTR? CT: I mean, all the people are just nice in it. You go to a MX race, you know, and you have to worry about your stuff being stolen and it’s so competitive. In FTR, everybody’s nice and everybody’s friends and they have races all the time. JS: Cool. Do you do anything else besides racing? CT: I go wakeboarding a lot because I live on the water so when I’m not riding, I’m wakeboarding. That’s really it. JS: Nice. Who is helping you out? CT: A lot of people: WMR is always helping fix my bike. Suzuki of Sarasota is always getting our parts to us and everything. My parents, Old School Dirt Riders and that’s really it. JS: All right. We’ll see you at the banquet. CT: Thank you very much.
