On the Cover: Savannah Streetman, Peewee B #23 Savannah Streetman has certainly been picking up the pace in Peewee B this year. As one of the only girls in her class, she’s placed in the top ten in every race she’s entered so far and finished inside the top five twice. Last season, her best finish was fifth, so she’s definitely been on the gas. Go, girl!

hen I was a child, there was something special about this time of year. People respected the seasons. Those who were eager to put up their Christmas decorations typically waited at least until the Thanksgiving Day celebration with their family. It was something the family did together. It was like an unspoken rule; it was out of respect of the seasons.

W

Greetings FTR Family: t seems to me that when our calendars roll around to this time of year, that unique “spirit” of Christmas seems to becoming more and more diluted. You can hear Christmas music playing on the radio right after Halloween. Stores can’t wait to begin putting up their displays. The season of Thanksgiving has now become a total blur. Did you know that “Black Friday” now begins on Thursday? I saw families, with their children, tent camping (at least half a dozen tents) on the sidewalk at a Best Buy on Thanksgiving morning. I can only assume that what

here are we going?

We all know that our government is doing its best to completely eradicate Christ from Christmas. If you listen to any news programs, it’s all about the movement of goods and products. Who will come out on top this Christmas? Will it be a good year for the consumer? My, my how times have changed in my short lifetime.

N

evertheless, each year I provide you with the printed version (right here in your Florida Trail Riders Magazine) of the true reason for the Christmas season. That story is best told in the book of Luke,

Chapter 2. It goes like this…

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and

I bring you good news was lying in the manger. 17 When that will cause great joy for all the they had seen him, they spread the people. 11 Today in the town of word concerning what had been told David a Savior has been born to you; them about this child, 18 and all who he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This heard it were amazed at what the will be a sign to you: You will find a shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary baby wrapped in cloths and lying in treasured up all these things and a manger.” pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and 13 Suddenly a great company of praising God for all the things they the heavenly host appeared with the had heard and seen, which were just angel, praising God and saying, 14 as they had been told. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, s this it? Hare Scrambles Committee Meeting Minutes The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by the chairman. Role was taken, in attendance were: (listed on right) Quorum was verified.

New Business: Kyle McAfee had filed and was allowed to present a grievance to the committee. His grievance related to a DQ at the Apollo hare scrambles by an official of the Apollo club. The incident was related to Kyle leaving the track and supposedly re-entering at a different place. It seemed there was some speculation involved regarding the facts around the case and some assumptions were made from lap times, and that no one actually saw Kyle enter at a different place. No official from the Apollo club that was familiar with the incident was available to speak. Kyle presented his case and testified that he did re-enter the track exactly where he left and explained how the lap times made sense. Rocky Gavins made a motion to repeal the DQ and reinstate Kyle’s scores for the race. Kevin Moyer seconded the motion and after a brief discussion, the motion PASSED. ADD after “Beginners White none / black” Sportsman Blue**** none / black **** Temporary backgrounds and hand drawn numbers are allowed. Numbers should be at least 5 inches tall where possible. A motion was made by Rocky Gavins to accept the proposal and it was seconded by Kevin Moyer. The motion PASSED and will be published in the magazine and presented for a second vote at a subsequent committee meeting.

Purpose: This is a proposal to change the Hare Scrambles Team Scoring Rules in order to provide parity in the results based on the number of competitors in any given class. Currently, equal scoring weight is given to finishers in large and small classes. This proposal rewards finishes in classes with larger competition fields. For example, most Woman’s classes usually have less than five entrants. Master B, for example, generally has between 20 and 30 entrants. A top finish in a large class is inherently more difficult than a top finish in a small class. Because of this, many Hare Scrambles teams are disproportionately comprised of members from smaller classes. This Rule Change would equalize that effect to some degree. continued on page 12

Michael Jones: Back for More {Editor’s note: I ran into Michael at the Gatorback Hare Scrambles in

2010; we had not seen each other in nearly 10 years, but standing in the pits behind sign-up, you couldn’t tell; we gushed on about where we’d been (college) and how great it was to be back at the races, picking up right where we left off. Now that he’s grown - he’s 29 - he goes by Michael but, back in the day, FTR had its own “Mad Mike Jones.” When I caught up with him recently, we got to talking about the things that changed, and stayed the same, and why FTR was always so important.} JS: When did you actually

first join FTR? MJ: I was either 12 or 13. I really cant remember, it was kind of a while back. I think it was 95 or 96 season. Back when we had the Sportsman class, as opposed to the beginner class. JS: How did you hear about it? MJ: Well, we always had dirt bikes, I grew up on dirt bikes, and some people that lived in the next little tiny, tiny town up above us - we had trails running back up behind their property - and they raced four wheelers so we kind of just became friends with them and started to go to some of the local races up here like Reddick, Ocala and stuff and just started doing it. Me and my brother, mom and dad started taking us to the races and that was that. JS: And you grew up in Williston? MJ: Yeah, that’s where I went to high school and that’s where the business is, in a little old town. Good

stuff there for sure. JS: But you still live in Gainesville, right? MJ: Yeah, so I commute back and forth but I moved up to Gainesville when I started going to college and petty much lived here ever since. Got a house and all that here, so. JS: How did you end up in the A class if you started off in Sportsman? MJ: I rode a year of Sportsman then I rode a year in C200 on an XR 200 - that was back when the C class used to race at 2 o’clock the last race of the day, so it was brutal, man, but I didn’t know any better. The bikes were nothing like they are now. There was no KTM 200 back then, so I come out of there and went up to the Juniors and they wouldn’t let me ride Junior B - they made me ride Junior A for whatever reason - and rode that for a couple years and I guess from there I went to B250 and won that championship and won B highpoint that year.

That was the ‘99 2000 season. I also did a lot of FTR motocross that year. I won B250 in FTR MX that year and came in second to Kyle McAfee in 16-24, so that was a pretty successful year as far as getting the jackets and what not and then just got moved into the A class, bounced around to all the different ones and I’ve been there ever since. JS: You’ve ridden all types and sizes, too? MJ: Yeah, I rode a 200, went back to 250, then I rode Open, went back to the 250 and now I’m in Open again. JS: What do you prefer? MJ: I love riding the 125; they just really don’t make them anymore and I’m a little big for a 125 and they’re kind of expensive, but I love the new 450. I mean, this bike that I got now is probably one of the funnest bikes I’ve ever rode in my life. It’s just great. A fun bike to ride. Easy to ride for me or whatever. It’s not like they used to be like the old 450s or whatever; it’s a good bike, for sure. JS: Do you like any particular brand the best? MJ: Not really. I really, really don’t. I actually bought a Suzuki because of mainly I Elliot Cook and Derek Hall -

they both rode them and told me how good they handled and I really needed to get a 450 so I got a Suzuki. I rode Suzukis a lot back in the Junior and when. I first went into the A classes. I guess I’ve always been fond of Suzukis and Yamahas. JS: But you’ve ridden all the brands, right? MJ: I raced a Kawasaki one time one race way, way back when but pretty much that’s been the only brand that I really, never really raced. I raced a Honda to start with and Suzukis Yamaha and KTM, and now back on the Suzuki JS: So, then what happened? You finally reached the A class and you quit racing to go to college? MJ: Yeah, back in about the ‘05 season, I broke my leg up real bad coming into that year and I still did the season and all that. I’d been racing real hard and I didn’t finish the year up as good as I wanted to. I think I ended the year 11th overall. I was pretty bummed about that. I missed the top 10 - actually Maynard Patterson bumped me out of the top

10 - nothing like one of your best friends beating you out for the top 10 year end so, yeah, I had been going to community college up here and I got ready to go to UF and I just knew I had to take that serious. I’d go do a race here or there but, yeah, I kind of quit racing up until pretty much this year. JS: I bet it’s awesome to be back! MJ: I’m stoked to be back. I actually planned on coming back last year; it just didn’t work out JS: And you met your wife in college? MJ: Yep. I met her up here. JS: Had she ever been around dirt bikes before? MJ: No, no, she never...she’ll go to a race with me here and there but she’s not into it, which is good and bad you know but she thinks it’s cool and all that. She likes watching me ride MX because she can kind of see it. But she likes going to the woods races because it gets over a lot quicker. JS: That’s true. It’s cool seeing a bunch of the guys from back in the day again. MJ: It just is. You know, life, when you’re 18 it’s easy to go racing because you don’t have anything else to do. There’s no mortgage. There’s no anything

never quit riding; I rode all the time. I just didn’t travel off to the races. I got a little burned on it over the years, you know? It’s tiring.

but now, you know, I’m pretty good, I’m not wealthy by no means but I’m pretty financially sound, me and my wife, and I can afford to do it again like I want to and do it right. JS: Since you do MX and Hare Scrambles, which do you like better? MJ: I most definitely like racing in the woods better because I’m a lot better in the woods than I am in motocross but I like practicing motocross. It’s fun to air out a big huge jump and stuff like that. I’m still a kid at heart. I like doing it. I think about it a lot more now than I used to (though). I see the big sketchy jumps that a lot of people are jumping now and I might not do it now. The hurt factor starts coming into play. JS: Did you teach yourself how to jump? MJ: Yeah, just riding around the

house. We had little tiny jumps. I was never confident on big jumps until that year that I started doing all the FTR MX with Kyle McAfee and a lot of times we would be kind of the fastest two there and there would be a big jump and I wouldn’t be comfortable and he would guide me over it. So, that really helped build my confidence riding with someone a lot faster than me who’s a pretty proven motocrosser. He helped me a lot without even realizing he helped me, and pretty much from then on, I’ve never really been scared, I think the only jump I’ve ever been scared to hit was the elevator and Garrett (Edmisten) pulled me over that so outside of that, it’s never bothered me since. JS: How do you stay fit? MJ: During the summer I road bike a

lot. I try to do that around three times a week. I try to ride my dirt bike at least a couple of times a week. The place I ride at, it has a MX track and it has a woods track there so I try to ride the woods track first for about an hour and then do a couple motos on the MX track. JS: Do you think MX is good for cross-training? MJ: Most definitely. I try to ride both. I think MX is very, very beneficial for the woods. Woods is all about your corners and riding MX is, you know, if you cant corner, you can’t do good at a MX race. JS: Are you planning on hitting the FTR MX races when they start up in February? MJ: Yeah I want to. I do it’s just going to be dependent on how it gets scheduled and where they’re at

2011 December | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | 17

but most definitely if they have any up here I’ll go and do those. I really, really enjoy racing the MX, I just don’t like doing the big serious MX events anymore. It’s gotten too serious and it’s too crazy. I feel it’s a young guys sport. JS: That’s one thing I was going to ask you, too. Do you think FTR has changed? MJ: FTR’s changed, not changed for the worst, but one thing that I’ve always loved when I first got into it, it was like a family. I’ve met some of my best friends in life in FTR you know Maynard and Brandon (Coffey) and just them boys. It’s just a very, very friendly event even to this day at a Hare Scrambles, if I need help, any one of these strangers are willing to help. If I go to a Winter AM I’m pretty sure the guy that’s in my class next to me I’m very is not going to thankful for FTR. help me get my I know it kept me bike started. It’s out of trouble in just not going to happen, but high school. I was going to the races. I I don’t care if he’s in my wasn’t home doing class or not, I what my friends want him to be out there and I were doing and want to see him getting in trouble. do good, you know? I don’t want him to beat me, but if he does, he does. It doesn’t bother me. Those big MX events and stuff, man it’s so cut throat. JS: How so? MJ: They’re all about themselves and that’s all they care about and our series is just not like that. It’s never been like that. I mean, you might have a few more people in it now just because it’s grown so much over the years from back when we were kids, so there might be a few people like that in there now (who are) kind of about themselves, but as the whole, it’s such a positive place to be as a kid. I’m very thankful for FTR. I know it kept me out of trouble in high school. I was going to the races. I wasn’t home doing what my friends were doing and getting in trouble. I might have been

getting in trouble (at the races) but just in a different way, from tearing up the four wheeler or something like that. I love FTR, man. It’s a family. I always have and I’ll always be involved, for sure. JS: So, you’ll bring your kids out to the races, if they want? MJ: Whenever we do have kids, if it’s something that they want to do, I’d love to be able to get one of those camper things with the kids and stuff and do what we did when we were coming up because that’s some of the funnest memories, you know, running around, not so much the actual racing but the running around and being young, that’s some of my best memories in life. Just the little things like that. I reminisce on it quite often. We could do whatever we wanted to at the races because we had so many people looking out for us. We couldn’t stray far. JS: Is there anyone helping you out? MJ: My mom and dad they still help me out through the business - Bill’s Tire Repair. Factory Connection they have been hooking me up for a good long while with my suspension. FMF and my pipes and what not. They’ve been with me 4 or 5 years or so. Works Connection. IMS. Motul and EKS Goggles - they started helping me out as of late. It all makes it possible. It may just be a little discount here or a huge discount here but without that help, you can’t do anything. JS: Where’d you get the Suzuki? MJ: My practice bike, I got it from ARS Power Sports when Derek was still working there. They used to help me out a long time back but the one I’m racing, I had to get it out of Cool Springs Powersports in (Franklin) Tennessee. JS: Wow! Why Tennessee? MJ: No one in Florida wanted to help. I called all the guys here in Florida and told them my situation and no one seemed to care, which I was pretty sad about, but it is what it is. But you...dang, I have money, you have a bike, let’s do something here. JS: That’s crazy. On another note, you started the original Facebook group for FTR, right?

18 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | December 2011

MJ: Yeah, a long time ago, Facebook used to be only open for whatever school you were at, so I had one from when I went to Santa Fe college but once it opened up to global, I immediately went in and made one and it didn’t really do much for a long time and then some people started getting on there and then when you started doing this (magazine), I made you an admin, but I just made it from scratch and it’s pretty cool. There for the longest time, it was only like 75 people and every time I seem to look at it, I see a few more people. It’s up to some 450 people and that’s a pretty good bit of people for us, for sure. JS: Do you see yourself getting politically involved in FTR, at all? MJ: Sometimes I do. I have such a full plate between work and having to deal with trying to race again, but maybe later, for sure. JS: It would be nice to hear from someone who has been around as long as you have! MJ: There’s not many been around. I know I’m only 29 but I’ve been involved for a long, long time. A lot of us got out and quit riding or whatever, it’s kind of sad. JS: But to end on a positive note, a lot of you started coming back at the same time - Maynard, Dusty, Kyle... MJ: I know, if we could just figure out some way of getting ol’ Brandon on a bike, that would be awesome! I wish we could. Even Jaco popped up and (Joey) Baker was talking about coming back out. And we didn’t all get around the table and decide to do this JS: I think there’s a way we could get Brandon on a bike... MJ: We need to hook him up, for sure. He’d love it. JS: Awesome. Do you have anything else you want to say? Any motto you live by? MJ: Not really. Just “have fun.” You gotta live for yourself, that’s for sure. And, for all the young kids out there you gotta get your J-O-B so you can keep riding your motorcycle. Stay in school. Go to college. Get a good job and you’ll be able to ride dirt bikes until you’re blue in the face. §
