New Business: Election of Chairman for 2012-2013 Season
An election was held to elect a chairman of the Hare Scrambles committee for next competition season and also serve on the Executive Committee. There were two candidates who each spoke briefly before the vote. The candidates were, Mike Belle and Joe Steidl. Secret Ballots were passed out to all committee members to mark their choice. When voting was done, the ballots were collected and tabulated by Kayla Vawter. Mike Belle was re-elected as chairman. Kayla allowed interested parties to view and verify the count after the meeting and subsequently destroyed the ballots. Sanctions for Next Season
Sanction request forms were accepted from any club wishing to hold a hare scrambles next season which had not already turned one in. There were 14 sanction request forms which had been turned in at or prior to the meeting from the following clubs: ACMC, Apollo, BSTR, CFTR, DDR, NCTB, OSDR, PBTTR, RCDR, SADRA, Suncoast, Sunrunners, TCTR, TTR. Allen Pearce made a motion to accept the 14 sanction for which forms were turned in at or prior to the HS Sanction Meeting on this date of 4/28/2012. Bill Jenkins seconded the motion, and after a brief discussion the motion passed. The chairman asked the committee if they were in favor of allowing an FTR Benefit race if there was a club interested in promoting it. A vote was taken and more were in favor of having a 15th race as a benefit, than were against it. 8 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | June 2012

ADD: As a note Note: If and when the manufacturer lifts the age restrictions, that immediately the classes in questions will have the new age limit set the same as the AMA’s rules. If the age is changed to another age limit, FTR will change those classes in question to that age limitation without the asterisks applied, but will not go below any age limitation that AMA has set at that time for those classes in question. The change is to remove the asterisks on the quad classes that have the age limit beginning with 16 years applied by the manufacturer. The reason is that by having the rule applied to that class that is denoted by the asterisks, it puts FTR in a possible financially jeopardizing situation by going outside of the manufacturer’s age requirement that is a consent agreement between the manufacturer and a federal agency. The asterisks applied allows for a rider under 16 to operate the machine going against the specifications set by the manufacturer. There is no reason for FTR to put itself in jeopardy by going outside of the manufacturer’s specifications on age limitations set for operation of the vehicle. I believe that the potential damages could run quite high therefore determine that this needs to be an emergency rule change. A motion was made by Gary Wyatt to accept the proposal and it was seconded by Allen Pearce. The motion Failed. continued on page 10

New Business: • Mike discussed that we have 15 clubs wanting sanction dates when there is only 14 available. SEFTR did not get sanction entry turned in to Mike before Hare Scrambles Committee meeting due to not knowing about meeting. The committee had already accepted the proposed schedule without SEFTR’s date for a race. Frank Campbell with SEFTR stated they would like to hold a race even if it is the benefit. SEFTR is worried that if they don’t hold a race next season they may lose their property. • Mike made a proposal to accept a 15th race to the proposed schedule as a benefit event. ext year’s schedule for next season as discussed at the Hare Scrambles Committee meeting is set. The dates are for Sunday, but any Hare Scrambles will be both Saturday and Sunday. All Enduro dates were set first, including out-of-state enduros. In addition to approving 10 MX dates that do not conflict with any Hare Scrambles, the Board of Directors approved a 15th Hare Scrambles as a benefit if a club is interested in promoting it. (Date to be determined later by Executive Committee, but probably one of the rain dates.) he Hare Scrambles dates are all on dates that clubs put as one of their choices. There is only one instance of two Hare Scrambles being back-to-back, which was acceptable to the Hare Scrambles Committe.

Mike seconded. Vote: 12 accept – 2 oppose Motion Passes • Brooks discussed that we should make a Cash Use Fund to establish a system of reserve just if FTR gets in a bind. Kayla discussed about certain questions and concerns going to the correct person and avoiding getting more than what is needed involved. All are going to make sure they forward the information to the proper person or inform individual to the correct person. Hare Scrambles Scoring System:
Daniel is working with a PeeWee Dad that volunteered his time to work on the scoring system to get it updated. Daniel has put together a committee with Tim Nordle as the chairman. Several scoring systems were discussed and the committee wants to wait and see 2012 June | floridatrailriders.org | 13
what the volunteer is working on. It was decided to reevaluate his progress in a few weeks but to also look at other systems as a back up plan. The only downfall to a lot of the new scoring systems is they don’t have any of the options we need as a standard set up so there will be some expense involved to make it work for us. Looking to redevelop our current system and update and use it to its full extent. Proposals from Hare Scrambles Committee: The following proposals have passed the Hare Scrambles committee, been published in the magazine, and subsequently passed by the Hare Scrambles committee a second time. The Hare Scrambles committee recommends the BOD approve these changes for inclusion in the rule book for next season.

Currently reads: A. General 3. A rider may ride one division or class per day. From the FTR Forum, on Enduro #9:
WOW, lots of DNF’s. What was the primary cause of that, heat maybe? Congrats to Garrett, and everybody else who finished!
“It’s an art more than a science.” (on scoring transponders)
Heat, dust, dehydration, dust and heat. It was a hard one for sure.

Hardest race I’ve done all year. EMTs everywhere for heat stroke on the 2nd lap. Apollo did a great job of having water at every stop, some guys just don’t know when to say enough. One of those deals where you had to pace yourself. Thanks, Apollo for busting your butts and making the event happen. See you next year. not supposed to be easy to finish.....
“If you have AA or As on your bike, you obviously go into that first turn a lot faster... it’s a lot safer to split them.” (on splitting classes)

Editor’s Note: I spotted Cameron Hannon at the riders meeting for Junior Enduro on the Samsula Hare
Scrambles property in May. A track official was going over the rules for the race, introducing “key time,” for the event, a term new to most of the youth under the tent. I caught up with Russ, Cameron’s dad, through the FTR forum, arranging to interview Cameron after the race.
JS: How was the Junior Enduro? CH: It was fun and a lot different than a Hare Scrambles. JS: Why is that? CH: It’s tighter and not as much flat, open sections, which I don’t really like the flat, open sections so I’m glad about that. It’s longer and I think it’s (for) a higher skill level. I really liked it. JS: Why don’t you like the flat, open sections? CH: It’s not that I don’t want to go fast. I just like more of a challenge. JS: Did you learn anything at the Junior Enduro? CH: Yeah, I did learn. I learned about how to go through tight stuff a little bit better and I
28 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | June 2012
also learned how to scan the trail ahead. JS: What about the Hare Scrambles season? How did it go for you? CH: It went pretty well. I got a fifth, a fourth and two firsts. JS: Then you had to move up? CH: Yup. I moved up to 65 B but now I’m in 85 C. JS: Why? Were you getting too tall? CH: It was for both getting too tall and my age. JS: How do you handle the bigger bike? CH: Better than the 65. It has a bigger suspension and bigger wheels so it helps me get over some things that I couldn’t on the 65.

Apollo’s Eagle’s Nest Enduro, May 6
JS: How long do you think you’ll stay on the 85? CH: For two more seasons. JS: When did you start riding? CH: When I was about 6. JS: Tell me about your first memory riding dirt bikes? CH: My first dirt bike I had a PW 50 and there used to be a track by my house but I wasn’t old enough to ride that track yet. There’s a little field by my house and we just set up some cones and I rode around those. JS: And you were hooked? CH: Yeah. JS: Why do you like riding? CH: The challenge but it’s also just a lot of fun to do it. JS: Do you play any other sports? CH: No, just dirt bikes, really. JS: Do you ride motocross or just Hare Scrambles? CH: I don’t race motocross but that’s where I practice - on the MX tracks. JS: Do you like motocross? CH: It’s fun but it’s not as fun as Hare Scrambles. JS: Why? CH: A lot of motocross actually is just putting
the throttle in the wide open. JS: So it goes back to the higher skill level? CH: Yeah. JS: What do you think about FTR? CH: I like FTR. When you race, it’s competitive but it’s not as competitive as motocross. All of the people there are really nice. JS: What role does your dad play? CH: He’s basically everything. He’s the mechanic. He does everything on the motorcycle. I help with maintenance on the motorcycle. JS: What’s something that you want to get better at? CH: Logs, probably. JS: Why? Do you hit them crossed up? CH: I can go over them but the only way I know how to do it is just slam into it. (continued on next page)

Out Front
Some of the riders pop their front wheel up so that it’s at the top of the log so all they have to do is get their back wheel over. I just slam into the log like I said. JS: You need to learn how to wheelie! CH: Yep. JS: I’m sure someone out there can teach you. Didn’t you guys just join the Daytona Dirt Riders club? CH: Yeah. JS: Now you can start meeting people your own age and go riding with them? CH: Hopefully that will happen but a lot of kids live pretty far away. JS: Where do you live? CH: We live right on the border of Taft (near the Orlando airport).
JS: What else do you think would help you get better as a rider?
CH: If FTR let us ride the course maybe after all of the races were done that day, just for some practice. JS: That would be cool. Your dad told me you went to KTM World recently. How was that? CH: It was fun. It was really challenging because it had a lot of terrain that I don’t usually get to ride in Florida. JS: Do you have any racing goals for the future? CH: I want to get better as a race but I don’t have any real big goals. JS: Just keep having fun. CH: I do like racing. I’m also in Boy Scouts and I’m working up the ranks. JS: When did you start Scouts? CH: When I was 10. I have three more ranks ‘til I’m an Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank there is. JS: Do you like Boy Scouts? CH: I like it a lot because, with Boy Scouts, it gives me a lot of experience that most kids don’t get to have. JS: Like what? Can you give an example? CH: Every summer we get to up to camp and our troop tends to go to a different state each year and try to get out of Florida. This year we’re going to Tennessee for a week. (continued on next page)
Russ: ( Cameron’s dad) • On Joining DDR •
“I have a lot more respect for the people who make the tracks now. That’s a lot of work.” • On Cameron Racing •
“He’s a thrill seeker. He really likes climbing up and down hills and going across water. Motocross is not really his thing. It’s really high speed.” • On Junior Enduros •
“Why don’t they have more of them? They’re half the price the of a Hare Scramble and longer riding time for half the price, so you really can’t beat them.” • Ideas for the Future •
“It would be nice if more lessons could be given for riders, perhaps by the better riders. The last one was log crossing. others might be roots, rocks, creek, sand, general woods riding tips, etc. I know
Cameron would do any that he could.” 2012 June | floridatrailriders.org | 31
Out Front JS: What do you do at camp? CH: We have classes like a normal school day, except they’re merit badge classes. I’m taking the rock climbing and I think rowing and then also we’re doing white water rafting. JS: Wow. You must be one of the only dirt bike rider Boy Scouts! CH: Well, I don’t know. I bet there’s some out there. JS: Is there anyone you would like to thank? CH: I would like to thank my father, mother and the club that put on the (Junior) Enduro. JS: Thank you, Cameron! It’s been a pleasure talking with you!

“
Thanks to the crew that put on the Jr Enduro this weekend.
Being Cameron’s first one it was a learning experience. He was so far behind the rest of the racers, I was worried that something may have happened. He told me that he fell at least 4 times and had some other issues which was why he so late. He was so late that he started the next lap after about 8 minutes past his start time for that lap. He slowed down his speed and made the next lap in better time. I don’t know what his times were so I don’t know how much better. It was hot, dusty and challenging and even with all of the dirt samples he took, he wants to ride them more and is looking forward to the next one. Thanks, Russell Hannon
I’m pretty sure Cameron was 7 minutes faster on that second lap. Sometimes you gotta slow down and stop making mistakes to go faster. Congratulations to Cameron! - Lee Daley
