y ankle is finally healed up enough to where I can get around without crutches but not without wearing my nifty walking boot, which is always a topic of conversation wherever I go. The last 6 weeks have been a true test of my patience not being able to ride or run or basically go anywhere without having to carry a backpack. Spending so much time by myself requires some patience, I think, but solitude also produces patience, too. And I’ve a lot of time to think about my next goal, which I’ve decided is racing the 24-hour Enduro in Alabama later this summer. After riding there for the first time earlier this season for the 60+mile FTR Enduro, I don’t know whether to be more excited or nervous - that terrain blew my mind! - but I’m looking forward to it, anyway.

especially after I attended the service for the Max family in early February. Walking in, I nearly fell over and not because I had to climb a few steps on crutches. No, hobbling into the church, I saw hundreds of sharp-dressed people, both strangers and friends, who filled the room. The loving energy hit me like a brick wall. Sitting down to watch the slide show of photos before the service started, it was hard to keep my tears from falling but I heard others sniffling around me so I knew I was not alone. As much time as I’ve been spending by myself lately, it was nice to know that we are never alone when it comes to our FTR family.

omething from the service stuck with me, along with the comment that “real living” is the smell of race gas in the morning. I heard: “A part of us has died. But he lived. He really lived,” and I managed a small smile through the tears. That’s how we’ll go on living, I thought. We can’t pretend tragedy doesn’t happen but we can be grateful for the times we have together riding our motorcycles and all the trails we’ve traveled. There’s more to life than racing, sure, and we take our chances bonding one-on-one with our machines, but the joy our bikes bring us makes us come alive. And that’s why my dirt bike can never be too far away; I want more. I even drove over to my storage unit where I keep my dirt bike to apologize for neglecting her (I haven’t washed her since January!) I only felt a little better. The crash broke (smashed) his tibia bone just below the knee. Jason had severe complications in the hospital where he spent 53 days and underwent 15 surgeries. They ended up cutting off his right foot 10 inches below the knee and rebuilt his crushed tibia using parts of his foot. He has been in almost constant pain but has had a good attitude and vows to return to racing. His only complaint is that he has to get a bike with an electric start. Jason still has a lot of healing to do before he can get his prosthesis, but he is making good progress, and he’s feeling better every day. Old Business:

Previous minutes were read into the record and accepted as read (Peter Magee, Seconded by Cary Hunt). Mike Ludwig brought a rule that we had tabled from next season. The Enduro Committee made a formal recommendation: All clubs hosting an enduro SHOULD consider “B and C” cutoffs for their events if the land and club resources allow for cutoffs.

New Business: AA Promotion Page 18 NEW RULE

e. Promotion to AA – The 2 (TWO) highest-ranked racers as ranked in the top 20 at season’s end are promoted to AA in FTR Enduros ONLY. This AA ranking applies to FTR Enduros and is not evidence to apply to other sanctioning bodies or other disciplines of racing within the FTR due to our small sample size. Any rider promoted to AA has the right to petition the competition

committee to revoke the promotion. The old “e” becomes “f ” and continues with re‐lettering to “j” This rule was read and accepted as read by Allen Pearce. It was seconded by Cary Hunt and passed by 7 to 1. Recommendations for cash payouts and the effects of such payouts on “Amateur Status” were discussed, and the Enduro Competition Committee recommends that any Amateurs that are scored as worthy of cash payouts are allowed to take “cash equivalents” and not jeopardize their Amateur status. “Cash equivalents” could be “shop credit,” “gas cards,” etc. Competition Committee heard from Bobby Henderson about his Enduro ranking. Based upon the information we heard from Bobby, the EC allowed him to race the Sr B class at the Lochloosa Enduro with the stipulation that he would move to Sr A if he won the Lochloosa Enduro. He would take 90 percent of his points to Sr A if he won and moved to A. Motion to adjourn by Sam Boydstun - (Seconded by Chad Hunter) Meeting adjourned at 6:43 p.m.

New Business:

Club Work Credit (Getting credit before FTR member) – We have a member, who worked a race prior to joining the FTR (out of state and worked the LBJ.) We discussed the precedence on such an occurrence and determined that no precedence was known. The Enduro Committee recommended that the work credit points should be given to the rider in question. Working an event and RACING the same event. (Is there a way to allow clubs to have members work an event?) No recommendation from the Enduro Committee. Current rules will be enforced.

Enduro Minutes continued...

Enduro Minutes continued...

If you ride the course prior to the event, you cannot race the event. Row assignment procedures? This was discussed at length, and the Enduro Committee deems the current rules are the fairest for assigning rows. Benefit 2014 - How do we resource the race? How do we improve turnout? Can we/should we Double Points?) We discussed the last two events on this season’s race calendar. We discussed creating a “extra 5 point” bonus that would be given to the attendees of both of the last races. We discussed the land options (Heart Island versus Lake George). We discussed staffing the races. The Enduro Committee decided that we should hold ONLY 1 of the last 2 events. I plan to approach a club in question and discern their interest in hosting the benefit and splitting the work and the profits with the FTR. The plan of record (assuming the club in question is wanting to utilize this route) is to have the race at the Lake George property RCDR/Benefit with 50% profit sharing - See update BELOW the minutes!!! Discussed Jr Enduro Series for 2014/2015 season - We want all of the Florida clubs to host Jr Enduro events. The FTR will look to HBD Moto Grafx and other vendors to help support prizes and gifts for the kids. We are considering creating “Allowances” for kids who have parent members riding in the Enduro series, which would offset costs. We are considering giving “Free” entries to kids with good report cards. We are considering many opportunities to entice and increase our participation for the mini and junior racers in our state!

Vote was called for by Mike Belle and Seconded by George Tolson. 5 votes for denying the protest, 3 votes for accepting the protest and the Enduro Chair abstained from voting. The protest was denied. The results will stand as posted. New Rule Page 14 Chapter IV Section A 4. Speed change information must be made available by phone at least 72 hours prior to Key Time. A proposal was offered by Jeremy Powell to strike the language above. Allen Pearce made a call for the vote. Ken Stephenson seconded. It passed unanimously.

Motion to adjourn by Cary Hunt, Seconded by Allen Pearce

New Rule

Meeting adjourned at 6:43 p.m.

A proposal was offered by Jeremy Powell to add the language below:

10/8/13 UPDATE – I attended the RCDR monthly meeting last night and got on the agenda to discuss the Enduro Committee’s direction for the final Enduro. RCDR voted unanimously to take on the hosting responsibilities and to host the event as a Benefit Race for the FTR Enduros. The club will supply resources (workers, sanctioning fees, equipment – arrows, staplers, course clearing tools, etc.) and the FTR membership will supply similar resources to provide a true partnership and the best possible event! We will remove the final event from the schedule and have a RCDR-hosted Benefit on the Lake George Property on 5/4/14. THANKS RCDR!!!

The meeting was called to order at 6:01 p.m. by the chairman. Roll Call : Jeremy Powell (Chair), George Tolson (Ref ) Present, Ken Stephenson (Scorekeeper) Present, Allen Pearce (Specialty C/Women) Present.

Sanctioning clubs: Big Scrub - Bill Toreki (Present), Suncoast - Mike Belle (Present), Central Florida Trail Riders - Keith Finnerty (Present), Daytona Dirt Riders - Randy Griffin (Present), Apollo - Sam Boydstun (Present). Quorom was verified. Mountain. Moment of silence for Kurt Caselli. Previous minutes were read into the record and accepted as read (Allen Pearce, Seconded by George Tolson)

New Business:

Reason for this ruling: Event flyer did not state scoring technique. It is standard practice to follow the out-of-state rules where conflicts exist. In this case, the SERA rules require the alternate technique be documented on the flyer. FTR rules do not allow this technique.

A protest on precedent was heard on the scoring at the 11/03/13 Event -

Reason for protest: During the discussions, it was pointed out that Nationals use this technique and we have always accepted the National data without rescoring. It was also pointed out the scoring technique and rules followed are documented on the event flyer.

Protest Although the FTR rulebook is clear, I believe the precedent set in accepting scores from the promoting clubs outweigh an out-of-date rule that should have been changed when the NEPG started using electronic scoring. This protest is to reverse the FTR decision to re-score the results that were provided by Perry

SERA defines this methodology as follows: Emergency checks will be scored by total minutes and seconds and are calculated from the top of a riders due minute. Scores will be tabulated by the

FTR Enduros define the methodology as per the hosting club’s preference giving the hosting club the option to score via the National Format or via the legacy format described in detail within latter sections of this rule book. This flexibility allows the club to decide the best methodology based upon resources available and other variables. The Scoring Methodology will be captured on the sanctioning form, should be on the flyer and should be disclosed at the riders meeting. Our event calendar will publish what is captured on the sanctioning form and will update the information as the enduro nears in the event the club changes scoring methodology. It is the club’s right to choose a methodology and the rider’s right to ask the hosting club for clarity at the rider’s meeting. The call for vote was made by Keith Finnerty and seconded by David Nagle. This rule was accepted as written by a unanimous vote. New Rule A proposal was made by Jeremy Powell to add “Generally” to the following text: Chapter V B 3. Key Time is generally 9:00 a.m. The first row (row 1) generally leaves one minute after Key Time: 9:01, not 9:00! Recommendation A recommendation was made by Allen Pearce (Seconded by Sam Boydstun) to score the National Enduro at Sandlapper per our rules. A vote was called. 7 yays / 2 nays. The Sandlapper scoring data will be used to score per the rules of our rule book. (Whole numbers will determine winner. Emergency points will break ties). A call to adjourn was called by Allen Pearce and seconded by Mike Belle. The meeting was adjourned at 7:01 p.m. Special notes: I had planned to have a teleconference line available. Unfortunately, I did not join the conference line as I had intended. Apologies to any folks who had hoped to join remotely.

Background It was pointed out at the event that the technique used did not meet the FTR rulebook. This brought into question how the FTR scores would be calculated. After much discussion between the Enduro Chair, Scorekeeper and Referee, the Referee decided to re-score the event to the FTR rules.

Total time and our rule book and how/why we scored the 11/03/13 event per our rules – The history of the data given to our referee was delivered to the Enduro Competition Committee so that a complete understanding might be had by all in attendance. The floor was open for questions and a full discussion ensued.

Formal protest of the 2013 Gobbler Getter Enduro Issue The scoring technique used at the Gobbler Getter Enduro was not performed per the FTR rulebook. Total time was used for scoring instead of whole minutes with seconds used for tiebreakers. The technique used is similar to the National events, with the exception the national events use electronic scoring. The decision was made to follow the FTR rulebook and not accept the scores as provided by the promoting club, Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club.

4. National Enduro rules for scoring emergency checks may be used as the methodology for scoring FTR enduros if an event is a “National Enduro” or “Co-Sanctioned” enduro or an “FTR Enduro.” The National Enduro Series defines “scoring” as follows: Emergency checks will be scored by total minutes and seconds, and are calculated from the top of a riders due minute. Scores will be tabulated by the actual number of minutes and seconds that a rider is late to an emergency check. Example: if you are due on minute 20, and come in at 21:30, your score is 1 “Minute” and 30 “Seconds” not 1 “Point” and 60 “Emergency Points.”

actual number of minutes and seconds that a rider is late to an emergency check. Example: if you are due on minute 20, and come in at 21:30, your score is 1 “Minute” and 30 “Seconds” not 1 “Point” and 60 “Emergency Points”. The riders score will be an accumulation of minutes and seconds totaled together. The club MUST announce that their event will be run as a “start control scoring format” on the event flyer.

It was also pointed out that Perry Mountain used this technique for the last 3 years prior to this event. Last year was a National and the two previous years were not. The event flyers for the previous two years were identical to this year’s flyer and the scores for those two years were accepted as-is and used for scoring. he may have said heim joint in his box of goodies. To Curtis’ delight, Jimmy was able to hook him up with a new heim joint (to the tune of $50...and that is a whole other story) Having replaced a few (possibly 20) heim joints in my day, I volunteered to help Curtis by replacing the heim joint. Here is where the lesson is to be learned on this part of our escapade. Before beginning the repair, Curtis offered me a frosty cold beverage. D’oh! Well then, back the our story. After consuming said frosty cold beverage, I opened my assorted tool boxes

and got out the necessary tools and walked over to the bike to begin the minor surgery. I took my trusty heim joint press and laid it up against the old heim joint and took my trusty hammer and lined everything up just right, swung back and with great force and expectation, I whacked the hell out of my left hand knuckle. Yes, missed the drift all together and hit my clutch hand. This, for most people who are paying attention, should have been deemed “The Sign.” I did not listen. Well, we were successful at replacing the heim joint as I kept working to keep all the blood

coming off my knuckle from getting on Curtis’ motor scooter. It was fun. Sunday morning we woke up to a rather frigid 36 degrees and frost on our dirt scooters. To say that the kerosene heater was our best friend would be an understatement. The sun came out pretty quickly and began to warm up the air on this brisk South Carolina morning. what you said In February, we asked for your thoughts and prayers for the family of Evan Max.

Florida Trail Riders Magazine expresses condolences to the family of Evan Max.

“E va n

w a s a r ea l ly g o o d ra c er w h o w o u l d n e v er q u i t .”

G u n n er W i l l i a m s

The funeral service at the church was amazing. I don’t do well remembering names but I believe I spoke with Evan’s uncle the weekend of the accident. That would be Robert D’Angelo riding the pit bike with the Bike Doctor front number plate. I didn’t have a story of Evan to share at the service as I don’t know him or his parents but I did have something I wanted to share with them: As we all know, if we race long enough, we are all sure to know someone who has suffered an injury and most likely would have suffered an injury of our own. I was just speaking with some of my friends recently about that very subject. When someone in FTR gets hurt who we don’t really know, we think, “I hope he or she is OK and fully and quickly recovers.” But when it happens to someone in our camp, someone we closely know, it hits close to home and hurts the heart. Again, I say I don’t know the Max family but rest assured there are a lot of heavy and hurting hearts in FTR right now. And will be for a long time.

I may not have met the child

Although we did not personally know Evan, we were there at the time of the tragedy sitting on the line with our daughter waiting to practice. It was such a sad day and I don’t think any of us will ever be the same after. He will always be in our hearts and never forgotten. Please let his family get through these dark, dreary days ahead and know that he is resting peacefully. Sometimes the good Lord takes his angels way too soon! RIP Evan #21C Kary-Ann & James Hayes

We too dont know the Max family personally - we dont know anyone in Peewee personally - but we do feel we have a lot of friends. When your kids line up and the small talk starts to ease the butterflies, there is an undeniable bond we all share with each other, no matter how far we live apart....our hearts literally hurt for the Max family and we are praying they will find some level of peace with it one day.

Sandlapper continued ...

from the hotel with some wonderful Waffle House coffee and it was a huge hit with the campers, me in particular. Once we got our things together for the morning of racing, we were off to the riders meeting where I and 50 other potential racers would find out if we were even going to get the opportunity to race this morning as we had not pre-registered for the event and as of Saturday afternoon, the event was full. At 8:30 a.m., Rhonda Dennis began to hand out the No Show rows. I was extremely fortunate to not only get row 54 of the 130 rows available. I was also, as luck would have it, on the very same row as my best friend Jimmy Pitts. Who would have thunk it? Now pushing forward to the start of the adventure, less one knuckle. I suited up very quickly and got on my trusty new steed, 2013 300 XC, and took off to the starting line of the event with about 11 minutes to spare. As I sat at the start with many other riders in great anticipation of the journey we were about to embark on, I realized that I had forgotten my goggle wipe towel. I sped off to the truck to retrieve said accoutrement and sped back to the start. On my way up the power line to the start, I was testing the red power band (joke in there somewhere) on my new 300 and realized, in a flash, that at the end of the power line, my throttle was stuck wide open! Holy moly! (Politically correct verbiage.) With the thought of my throttle sticking wide open on the trail, I decided to speed back to the truck and get my practice bike out of the trailer. Mind you, this is my

old Mary. My 2008 450XC hill-climbing machine. I pulled the bike out, threw some gas in the tank and off to the start. As I pulled up to the start, my good friend Jimmy Pitts looks down at the bike and says that my front tire is LOW. I take a quick check of the tire and find he is correct. We now have 2 minutes to go. I then sped off to the truck and grabbed my tire pump and added some air to the front tire and back to the line I go. I think to myself, ‘Man, that has to be the last of it,’ I was sorely mistaken. Jimmy and I bust off into the first section of timed trail and I fell like Superman. The dirt at the Sandlapper is somewhat reminiscent of the old Tallahassee Enduro and I loved that race for the many years that we raced it. I was railing the berms and shooting over the top of the whoops like Ricky Carmichael (plus 20 years About half way into the section, I was blitzing some whoops (as best a 44-year-old amateur can) and heard some horrific clanking in the mid-section of the bike and the rebound seemed to go from good to non existent. For those of you who have had this happen, you know exactly where I am going with this. Yep, I lost the top bolt to my shock. Gone with the wind. Life can only get better from here. I continued to race the second half of that section with the shock completely disconnected from the top mount of the bike.(Anyone want to buy a slightly used trail bike that has been gingerly ridden by a senior rider?) Once I exited the Out check, I looked for the first course worker I could find and found that the parking area was only 3.6 miles via the highway. You got it. I then took off down the hard road to go to the parking area and get a spare bolt from my trailer and fix the shock. Yes, I have that bolt on the trailer because I have lost it once before. Jimmy said they make something called Loctite that could remedy my concerns. I will have to look into that product. I digress. I then rode at the speed limit (Right!) back to the crossroads where I left the trail and proceeded to the restart ahead. Believe it or not, I made it back with 2 minutes to spare. The club did a great job with the resets, probably too good of a job. Anyhow, we entered the next timed section and I was off and racing at my usual pace and at some point my right foot was introduced to one of South Carolinas finest stumps. Yes, I hit that stump full on with my right foot trapped between the stump and the frame of the bike and it was a doosey. I continued down the trail, unable to feel my right

foot. Apparently, to my dismay, I must have been dragging the rear brake pedal, due to my lack of feeling in my brake foot, and at some point in that section, my rear brake boiled and I shot straight into a tree and flipped over the handlebars. Some of you know that feeling when the rear brake fails and you pull an OH, SHOOT! I picked myself up, poured the little bit of water I had left in my Camelbak on the rear brake caliper and took off to finish the section, keeping my brake foot suspended in air to not drag the brake again. Go figure. Exiting this section took us to the gas stop where I was able to change out my rear brake pads for fresh ones and back to the restart we go. I did also have a moment to refill my Camelbak and check the bolt on my shock again. I then raced into the B section, which would be the last section that the B riders would race. I understood it to be a 9-miler that was not going to be too bad. Around mile 7.5, I was once again railing the berms and blitzing the whoops when I realized that my front end was washing out pretty bad. I stopped for a second to check and, sure enough, my front tire was flat as a pancake. At this point, I made the determination that I had come this darn far and was actually having a very good race (points wise) and by gosh, I was going to finish this thing. I leaned back and took off on top of the whoops and was giving it all I had. I crested a very large whoop and then jumped the next three. As I landed on the far side of the whoops with the throttle on the trusty 450XC to the stops, I heard another horrific noise. It was a loud clattering and the bike ceased forward motion. I pulled in the clutch lever, revved up the motor and dumped the clutch only to find that I had wrung off every tooth on my countershaft sprocket. REALLY? To this end, I resolved that the message sent to me the night before, when I dislodged my knuckle with the hammer and drift, was loud and clear. I should have gone golfing! Not wanting to wait hours for the sweep crew to finally make it out on the trail, I decided to push my bike through the woods, cross-country and found a road. I then pushed my bike down the road ‘til I round a road crossing course worker who was generous enough to pull me back to the camp with their golf cart and tow strap. I reached the trailer, one last time, to sadly push the trusty old steed up in the trailer and sit back on my folding chair, to the place where it all began, and have a cold beer!

The End!
