Kelsey O’Donnell won 11 out of the 15 Hare Scrambles this season in the Women A class, writing recently:
“
This season has had its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t have gotten this championship without my family and friends. At the beginning of this season, I wasn’t even sure I would be fully recovered from my knee injury, but I came back strong and proved myself once again. I’ve been racing FTR for about 15 years and this season has by far been the best. I’ve introduced my fiancé to racing Hare Scrambles, had the opportunity to battle with my best friend (Tiffany Hoskins) all season, and have spent great weekends with my parents who have helped me through all of this. Racing is in my blood, thanks to my dad! I’ve grown up with FTR and looked up to my dad and his friends winning and having great weekends at the races! I’m happy to say his buddies and their kids are still in our “race family” and we continue to have a blast! With this season under my belt (along with broken ribs and toes) it’s time to take a little break. I sold my last bike to my little brother who will start racing again next season. Maybe he and I will be able to have a sibling battle in the big boy class in the near future! -Kelsey O’Donnell #28A

G
lenn Gardner made choosing photos for this magazine easier than ever with more than 1,800 images from Dade City alone, so I tried reaching out to the members on Facebook to help tell their story. At press time, the FTR Magazine Facebook page has reached 568 members, which is almost one-third of the total membership! Way to go! Now, if there is ever a photo that you think tells a story, post it on the Facebook page so everyone can enjoy! This month’s magazine is filled with enough news and information to (hopefully) tide you over until the banquet on August 4. I hope you will introduce yourself to me, if you attend, so we can get you in the magazine! We have already started collecting contingency and awards to be given out at the banquet, so don’t miss out. I would like to years congratulate all of the jacket winners this season and look forward to interviewing as many of you as I can! Last but not least, I’m excited to announce that I’ve teamed up with Race Tech Suspension/MX Holidays/KLeN Laundry and Maley Motorsports and I will be racing the Women A class next season on a KTM 150! Ask Moto Adam Learning to be a better rider Going to the track on a weekly or biweekly basis is your best bet to getting faster and more confident. You need to get as much time on the bike “Seat Time” as you can. When you arrive at the track, you should take a few minutes to gather your thoughts about how you want to approach your practice laps. I usually close my eyes and envision the track, do an imaginary lap in my head, specifically paying attention to your line choice. When you get on the track, don’t try to go fast right away. You should take one or two slow laps to check out the track and make sure all of the obstacles are what you think they are. Check for kickers and look at the good lines. Ride about 5-10 laps at 50-75 percent of your full speed. Each lap alternate lines; go inside one lap and outside the other. Don’t worry about your speed at first because that will come with time. If you have any questions regarding, riding, racing or bike maintenance, please contact me through my website: www.askmoto.com - Moto Adam Wald, #17 adam@waldcreations.com

(One of our scholarship winners from last season)
Dear Florida Trail Riders,
I would like to take the time to thank you for the generous scholarship that I received. It has helped me so much with the cost of tuition and books in my first year of college. I am so glad for the opportunities that this scholarship has given me and would like to thank the members of FTR as well for their generosity and thoughtfulness to give back to their membership. I am a first year UCF student pursuing a degree in engineering and I wanted to thank everyone who has helped me through this scholarship. With Great Thanks,

John Baltzell: FTR Racer Competes in Tuareg Rallye
Senior C rider Brent Teixeria (42C) is racing in the Tuareg Rallye in Morocco. He is the only rider from the USA, or North America for that matter. After a rough first stage, yesterday he rose to mid-pack in Stage 2. He is racing in the Professional Moto class and is #112. Good luck to a good friend, great guy, and fellow FTR racer!!!!
Brenton Teixeria: Thank You
A huge thank you to all those who supported or followed my progress. The Tuareg Rallye was an amazing experience and I learned a ton of rally strategy. The huge dunes were by far my favorite part of the rally, and we had plenty of dunes. Three days of pretty much nothing but dunes, you started and ended in the dunes. First day, I had some navigation issues that cost me 8 hours of penalties and I broke my left ring finger about 20 minutes into the first special. Second day was better, but long like the first, over 400km, which transfers into some serious seat time. Day three, my bike broke down and I had to be recovered by the organization so mucho penalties again. Got the bike going that night, thankfully. Day four, 26km liaison to the start, bike is running fine. Start well and 2km into the dunes the bike dies again, same problem. Don’t make any of the checkpoints so get the slowest time of the day plus the max penalty. British guy on a KTM 660 rally

Kurt Lucas: AA Proposition
I think FTR as a whole should treat our AA riders better, they worked really hard to get there so I think we should allow every AA rider to set up a “booth” on vendor row where they can sign autographs for the kiddies, I remember when I was in 65s and to me AA was like pros at a supercross race. This would give more incentive for riders to race AA
Jacob Gilliam: I could see
comes by and tows me back to the bivouac about 28kms. Finally get the bike sorted and go racing again on day 5. The starter starts me 10 minutes late. All dunes again all day and I miss the cp (checkpoint) finish by 3 minutes so I get a 2-hour penalty. I protest the penalty and get refused with the reply that it was my responsibility to start on time. Lesson learned. Day six was another 400km+ day with the infamous boiler pass; you would be lucky to get up this pass on a trails bike and here we were doing it on big rally bikes. Day goes well and I don’t get any penalties. 30th place on the day. Day seven, another 400km+ north to Nador, goes well for me but I see some horrific accidents and riders getting hurt. I think 37th on the day. Catch the ferry back to Spain that night. Day eight was along the coastal roads in Spain with a short special down a dry river bed to the finish on the beach. Awards party and plenty of drinking afterward at the beachside resort. ???? I had big fun. My final place was 74th out of 149 riders, I’m just happy to have completed it. Thanks fellas. - Brenton

my biography now....“Jacob Gilliam - This guy went really fast ONE time!”
Mike Belle: Nice sentiment,
Kurt! I doubt very seriously that any of the clubs would have a problem with making space available for what you asked. However, knowing many of the “AA” riders I know they would never have a problem giving a kid an autograph any time any place, but they may feel funny setting up on commercial row for just that purpose. I think
most are more humble than that and I just can’t picture them setting up for autographs like that. However, if you can find some that want to, have at it. I think a better idea is to organize a class for the kids and then ask the AA riders to come instruct. I have done that before and it worked out great. Jonathan organized one himself at Mondon Hill and loves working with anybody interested, so I know he would do it if he’s available! continued on page 10

William St. Laurent: That is a
great idea. Having a row of AA riders in a preferred spot would be really fun for all of us to see and be able to talk to them, etc. Not sure they would want all the attention!
Tommy Hill:
I wouldn’t say they’d have to set up a “booth”, just bring their bikes over to vendor row with a chair and
Ford Snodgrass
hangout with their AA buds. I’m with Kurt even when I was in Jr’s I thought the AA guys were the fastest guys on the planet and would have liked an opportunity to talk to them. It would be kind of awkward though if only 1 guy shows up but if we could get a few guys to say they would want to take a hour or 2 just to hangout outside
Attention Mx Enthusiasts:

We are very near the end of this season and it is almost time to fill in next year’s schedule. I have not seen any efforts to revitalize the series. I have seen a lot of ideas thrown around but I haven’t seen anyone step up and try to get anything done. As of right now we have a MX chairman with no MX committee. Without a committee we are unable to do anything for the MX series. If I don’t see any effort in the near future I will be recommending that we terminate the MX series due to lack of interest. I will be basing that decision on the lack of ridership in the past seasons, the lack of a current MX committee and the fact that no one is bringing any proposals to the EC. We need ideas BUT more importantly we need action. SOON!!!

FTR does not make enough money off of their portion of the race to pay out any cash awards. If the clubs want to do that, I don’t think anything is preventing it. Would YOU want YOUR entry fee raised to cover that?
Gary Wyatt:
Nic Frey: For any of the AA guys it’d a great time for their sponsors to get some exposure. Which could lead to more support.

of their camps to talk to people, promote sponsors, and just have fun in their AA glory I think it would be SWEET!
You may have come up with a great idea. The clubs could add five bucks to the entry fee and that could be the pot of cash the AA guys race for. 600 riders @ 5.00= 3000.00.....Now that would
Jonathan Campbell: How about this. If we
could ever start a pre-race “On-line” sign up maybe for the convenience of singing up early on-line you are charged an extra $5 and that goes to the AA riders. I know I would pay an extra $5 to be able to sign-up early in the race week especially if it goes to the AA riders.
Mike Belle: Personally, I think the only way to keep a sport pure is to keep the money out.
Dan Aitken: This is an addiction/passion. When money is thrown in the mix the fun starts to be lost.

I have heard so many stories over the years on how the members of this organization go above and beyond lending a helping hand, not to mention the pleasure I had working with Glenn Gardner just a few weeks ago. What an amazing and talented individual. Not to forget his wonderful helpers that Saturday of Bo, Paul and Rick. We all enjoy his race pictures but actually working him one-on-one and seeing how much he enjoys taking pictures is just amazing. If anyone of you ever gets a chance to work with this wonderful person, take the opportunity you will not be disappointed. Thank you again, Glenn, for all that you do.

of seeing a random vehicle with a FTR sticker. I seem to be getting to have
this experience more and more in my little hometown. I had seen this truck before and, on our way through town coming home from Chipley, I got to see it again. This time, with the trailer on the back of the truck, we sure got his attention this time. We of course got a honk and a wave. What an awesome way to end a long road trip. The bond that FTR brings to each and every one of us puts “FAMILY” at the heart of FTR. I had the joy and experience to bond closer with the group we hang out with at the races, loading down two trucks and trailers full of quads and luggage. Hello FTR Family,
e just arrived home from the Chipley Hare Scrambles. Yes, the attendance was low, but the fun factor at this site is always high! As usual, the Tallahassee Trail Riders did a wonderful job.
W
hat about Ted? Ted Everett is a fantastic landowner. Did you know that he raced in the beginner class on Saturday? Has that ever been done before? Has a landowner ever raced on the weekend of his event? I think he was in third for three laps. His bike (or maybe it was his body) just could not handle the pressure. Ted, it’s time to get off the TTR and step up to a real race machine. He really appreciates the Florida Trail Riders and is possibly the greatest landowner FTR has ever had the opportunity to partner with. By the way, if you are looking for another place to ride this summer, Ted has opened an offroad park just down the road from the Hare Scrambles location. It currently sits on 600 acres along with camping facilities.

f you were not at the FTR Benefit race last month, let me take a moment, once again, to say thank you to a few people who helped to make the Off-Road Racing Ministries raffle for the Tolken Family such a success. This could not have been possible without the generosity of Dave Wagner (owner of Cycle Sports Center) and KTM factory offroad racer Russell Bobbitt. Dave donated two sets of gear and Russell donated two autographed jerseys. It was a real treat to speak with each one of you who came to the table and filled out a ticket. Your kindness brought $983 to a well-deserved cause. Thank you, FTR Family. To Chris and Lee Ann Tolken, know that we are still praying for you and your family. Also on that day, Ben Kelly took a hard spill and was flown out. After a couple of surgeries, he is now in a rehab facility near his home working daily to get better. Ben, we are praying for you, too, buddy. Get well soon!

“Just Thinking”
he writings of the Bible spans thousands of years. Consequently, we meet many, many characters. Some are briefly passed over with only a single mention of their name and action. There are some individuals whose actions were significant yet we are not even given their name. Then, along comes the famous character of David. Statues have been created in an attempt to immortalize him. Movies have been made to bring the ancient character to life. In the Bible, we can trace his life from his status as a young shepherd boy to his last breath as the great King of Israel. During this time, we are able to see his successes and failures. Thankfully, the Bible records both. From David’s life, we learn some wonderful things about God. He is very patient. He loves us greatly. Because He loves us, He will discipline us. No one likes to hear that part, but it is true. Another great attribute we learn about God from David’s life is that God will forgive us when we fail. However, this forgiveness comes only after repent. Thankfully, the Bible does not gloss over details. We are able to see the good, the bad and the ugly in this man’s life. However, even greater than that, I am grateful that God’s Word to us, the Bible, gives us a clear and specific picture of His love for us. Leet me encourage you to think on these things.
I’ll see you on the line.

Facebook Friends Joel Labash:
I actually remember thinking “Uh, oh. There is Glenn Gardner taking pictures, I better try to look like I am going fast.” This was my first race (Dade City) in the Senior C class and I ended up finishing 9th.
Thomas Glancy:
As dusty as it was in Dade City, I was psyched to get out in front of the 32 riders on our line. Once I got through the first corner clean, I was thinking “get after it and set a strong pace early; there’s a lot of fast riders behind you.” I knew it would be tough to hold off the hot rods in that class that usually run up front....Leading a race is cool, even if only for a short time....P.S. I’m shooting for 3 straight on the holeshots this week, after nailing it at Chipley too. I hung onto that lead for a mile or two up there before they started sneaking by... 26 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | May 2012

JS: Tell me about your childhood? How did you get started riding? CB: I learned how to ride when I was three and loved it from then on. Even before I raced FTR, Dad always purchased FTR memberships for me so I could get the magazine. JS: So, when did you start racing? CB: When I turned 16. At that point, I was just doing local MX for fun and Dad told me, ‘Why don’t you try Hare Scrambles?’ My first one (was bad), but when I got on a 125, I started going to them and it was different. JS: How come? CB: People at motocross, they are really kind of uptight and really not friendly to each other. JS: So, you stuck with FTR? CB: Yeah, everybody is always real friendly. We always like to go and camp; we have a lot of friends out there. Not until the past couple of years when I started really doing good was when I really started to enjoy the Hare Scrambles more and more. Actually, I never really pictured myself being a woods rider, at all. JS: You’re still a good motocrosser, right? CB: I’d say pretty good. I think I can run B class in motocross (laughs)...To be honest, back in 2007, I was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. JS: Wow. I had no idea. CB: The thing is, I didn’t know I had cancer. I didn’t go to the hospital because I had cancer. I went to the hospital because I was having severe stomach pains... they found a massive tumor and actually only gave me three to six months to live. I hadn’t even turned 21 yet. That was a real hard thing. (continued on next page) Facebook photo

Editor’s Note: When Corey Blanton posted the below ‘Race Face’ photo on Facebook recently, I had to laugh, so I tracked him down for an interview to see how his season ended overall. We have been friends on Facebook for a while, but I don’t remember ever talking to him in person, even though our dads used to battle each other in the Master A class when we were young. Before talking to Corey, I scoured his Facebook page for questions to ask and old photos to share but it wasn’t until speaking with Corey on the phone that I found out everything I needed to know.

Between the Trees
That moment; life is going to leave you. It was tough at first but after everything, everybody for the longest time, you know, people would tell me, ‘I don’t see how you could do it,’ but when you’re thrown a life or death situation, anybody would do what I did and I just put my head down and fought for myself. I did a lot of chemo; I did 12 rounds at the time, I did the most rounds that they would give someone in that short period of time and they removed the tumor from my stomach and it came back; I’ve had it twice so I’ve been pretty fortunate. JS: What kept you going? CB: Just, I love riding. When I was in the hospital, other than my family and that kind of stuff, the only
thing I really wanted to do was just ride my bike, no matter what consequence. And the very first race I went to after I got out and was released from everything... they gave me my free reign to do what I wanted to, I went right down to the track that weekend and jumped on a bike, did practice and raced my first motocross race and actually won it, my first race back, so that was pretty cool.. JS: Wow. Where was that? CB: it was just Bartow; it wasn’t a big race. At the time, there was plenty of people there, I think there was probably eight or 10 people in my class, so to come back and be able to say I won my first race back is definitely something very memorable to me. JS: Absolutely! CB: The weird part was, I had just got out, so I was so tired and exhausted from the chemo, I was just horribly sick afterward, but it was worth it. JS: And then you started racing Hare Scrambles? CB: The first full season I did was in B 250 after chemo; that’s when I won my championship. Last year, my first year in the A class, was a pretty tough year, going from winning B and then going to A and getting spanked. We trained pretty hard all summer long to come into this year and kind of blended a lot better this year but we need some new equipment. I’m riding an ‘07 dirt bike. I’m not going to say it’s all the bike but I did beat them this weekend JS: Who helps you out? CB: Well, my dad has worked for Honda of Winter Haven for 30 years. He’s the main salesman for them. They give us a pretty good deal on everything. AKECKS Boost Mobile hooks me up and really helps me out a lot; to do the GNCCs that I’ve done, without them, I wouldn’t be able to do them because those cost a lot, so they cover a lot of that, gear, they help rebuild the bike, they really shell out a lot of money to help me keep racing. I have Bobby with Pro Action Suspension who helps me out. Dirt Road Motorcycles in Mulberry is another little shop that one of my mechanics works for them. Bartow Motocross and my mechanics Scott Frystak and Brian Sargent. It definitely would be hard, I mean, we’ve done it years
Corey: When I’m not racing, I do a lot of training simply because after all that I have been through,
I now live to make myself happy. I work as hard as I can to be as good as I can and I will never give up. I have tattooed on my arm “I live strong to be strong” that helped get into shape and stay focused. Having a good support group is key. I’d tell all the little ones not to forget where you came from, stay humble and true to who you are. My biggest memory is winning B 250 after I finished chemo. That was my biggest achievement at that point. ”
before without any of the help, but these past couple of years, as hard as we’ve been going, it really does makes a difference. JS: What’s one of your favorite tracks? I bet you like Gatorback because of the jumps? CB: I love Brooksville. It’s my favorite track. It was my first race that I lead all the way down to the log and I wrecked going under the log and got passed for the win 200 yards from the finish and I was on the last lap. That one’s always fun. It’s close to home and then all the Bartow events; that’s right in my backyard, 10 minutes from my house. For the most part, Gatorback has always been my favorite track and I don’t know why, there’s only been a handful of times that I’ve done good. Most of the time, Gatorback usually wipes me out, but I just think it’s just a fun track. JS: Does your racing number mean anything?
CB: It’s definitely original. It has no meaning. When we were going to start racing, Dad’s like, ‘Hey, you need to come up with a number.’ My dad was 179 and my brother raced 971 and, for a long time, I was going to run that, but I went to bed one night, woke up and wrote this number down on a piece of paper. It’s just kind of stuck. There’s nothing really about it. JS: Do you have a nickname? CB: No, nothing that I want anybody to know. JS: Have you ever raced an Enduro? CB: This year was a first for me. My dad really talked me into it this year. We went to the Little Brown Jug and I finished seventh in A 250 but that was a national enduro so I ended up being the fifth fastest Florida rider. I was pretty stoked about that. JS: Does your dad still race? CB: Not anymore. Well, he does every now and then. We’ll do mountain bike racing but these past couple of years, we’ve been so heavy on the bike that he hasn’t really done much. We usually do the 6-hour mountain race at Carter Road and stuff. He doesn’t ride the dirt bike any more. JS: Think it’s too much? CB: Well, you know, he’s 60 years old now. With me doing it, and if times were a little better, he would
probably jump back out there and do it, maybe. You may see him next year. I’ve been trying to talk him into it. He craves it, I know he does. He was always really good, rode Master A was the last time I remember him riding back in 2005. JS: I know. I remember our dads battling back in the day. CB: He was doing pretty good then. With both of us doing it, it got kind of expensive so he kind of made the sacrifice and let me kind of live it, because he loves watching just as much as he does riding. JS: Are you guys going to the banquet? CB: This year I’m making double (in contingency) what I got last year, and just the fact that it’s been a hard year racing, I think we’re § going to try and go.

Editor’s Note: Jesse Ansley is well-known for winning. This season, the 11-year-
old Florida native wrapped up an undefeated championship in the 65 A class, bringing his championship total to three (Peewee A and 65 A twice.) For Jesse, winning every race this year was important, especially after last year when he almost won every race. After speaking with Jesse on the phone recently, I learned of his tight training schedule, future goals for racing and what it’s like to be the grandson of Tom and Ellen Fleming of TF Racing Suspension; it’s easy to see how this youngster finds success. JS: Tell me about yourself, Jesse. Where do you live and how old are you? JA: I live in Myakka City, Fla., and I’m age 11. JS: Where do you go to school? JA: I’m homeschooled. Well, I’m virutual schooled so I have teachers online. JS: Do you like being homeschooled? JA: Sometimes. JS: I bet you like racing better. JA: Yes mam. JS: So, this FTR season, you won the Hare Scrambles championship in 65A? JA: Yes, at the Dade City race, I wrapped up my championshiop with no second places. I got a perfect season and I used, I think, all my four drops. JS: Were you impressed by those results? JA: Yes, last year in 2010-2011, I almost had a perfect season but I went into the water at Ona. JS: You won the A class last year? JA: Yes. JS: So, what are you going to ride next year? JA: I’m going to go to 85 B and just go on from there. JS: On a KTM? JA: Yes, I have a KTM 85 right now that I’m training on. JS: Do you like it? JA: It actually handles way better because it’s higher. JS: When did you start racing? Who got you your first bike? JA: It was Christmas of 2005 and my grandparents bought me my first bike from Spaceport Cycles. It was a PW 50. I got 13th at my first FTR and I won Gatorback FTR on my PW 50 in the Peewee C class. JS: Sounds like you were a natural from the start! JA: Yes, I’ve been doing FTR my whole life, basically. JS: I know you race at the national level, too, but what do you like the most about FTR? Is there anything different? JA: I like FTR because I basically grew up around it and everybody is my friend there, basically. After I get off the track, I can socialize. I can see somebody walking in the pits and tell them, ‘Hey,” and have a
conversation with them. JS: And your whole family goes to the races, including your grandparents?

JA: Yes, they have the big blue and black boxvan and they’re working on suspension all weekend. JS: Some would say you’re really lucky to have Tom as your grandpa! JA: Yes, he runs with me everday we run two-anda-half, three or four miles everyday so, yeah, he sets up my bike and after every race I actually take it all apart and put it all back together and if I need help with something that’s what he’s doing so that’s a good thing about that. JS: Does he give you any advice at the races? JA: Yeah, after I get done with practice, he asks me how the course is and if I say something like, ‘At the 4-mile marker, there’s this real sketchy section,’ he’ll give me some advie and tell me to look for good lines. JS: Do you really take your whole bike apart by yourself? JA: Yes, but sometimes my dad comes out to the shop and helps me. We have a real good support team helping me. JS: I know you’ve traveled all over, but what is one of your favorite tracks? JA: This year I didn’t get to go to Gatorback because we were qualifying for Loretta’s at Reddick but my favoirte track always is Brooksville. It’s kind of true trail riding. There’s real tight section, real open section, they have an old mx track there. I like it. JS: Do you have any brothers or sisters? JA: I have one brother, one sister and a half sister. My brother Jimmy used to race then he got real sick so he

kind of quit that but he’s starting to do it now again. JS: I have to ask, since you’re used to winning a lot of races, what is the hardest part? JA: Just getting ready and trying to eat healty – I eat healthy everyday (but) just going running. You have to stay mentally tough. JS: What’s the best part? JA: The best part about racing is that you go to the track and you can have fun and you can win. JS: You have also won all five GNCC races so far? How tough has that been? JA: At River Ranch, I kind of got it handed to me. I won by 10 minutes and 48 seconds. The Georgia one was really muddy and I kind of got that one handed to be because I was smart and they kind of all got stuck. Then the North Carolina, we were battling. And then SC, we were battling also. And the Kentycky one, that’s when we were going back and forth through the woods every second. JS: And you won every time? JA: Yes, I’ve pulled off every one. JS: How is the terrain? Are you scared of the mountains? JA: Well, kind of, but I kind of expected it. JS: What are you looking forward to? JA: I heard somebody say that if you win a GNCC championship you get a ride down Main Street in New York so I really look forward to that. I really want to do that. JS: What about FTR? Just keep climbing? JA: Yeah, I’m going to aim for that. I don’t think I’ll ever get away from FTR. My main goal is to keep on winning championships. JS: Who do you look up to? JA: I look up to Garrett Edmisten and JP Wilson, and in the GNCC I look up to Charlie Mullins. JS: Is there anyone you would like to thank? JA: I would like to thank God for keeping everybody together and safe. TF Racing. Steve Thompson. HBD Grafx. Embory truck and tractor. Pit Posse. G2 Photos. 3d. Maxxis. And my whole family for supporting me. Mom (Christy Rae) and Dad (Lynwood Ansley.) JS: Are you goin to the banquet? JA: Tom and elllen dont becasue the Loretta Lynn’s nationals, but since I’ve been winnig the championships, I go and then my mom drives me to the airport in the morning and I fly to Tennessee, so I do go to the banquet. §

It’s our goal to try to race at four different tracks and just try to rotate. One is an eighth-mile in length. The Ocala track is a quarter mile. We’re trying to get a 3/8 mile and a half mile. Most of the tracks that we race on are go-kart tracks and mini sprint car tracks. We want to get the bigger car tracks but it’s really hard tor compete with the car crowd.
