ow, where has time gone?? November is on top of us and it is time to get serious about FTR. With November, come elections. This year, you will be electing a Vice President and a Treasurer along with all of the Area Directors. I urge you reach out and find out about the candidates. Keep FTR’s best interest in mind and cast an educated vote. We will be hiring a new business manager this month as well. We will all have to work together to keep FTR moving ahead to ensure a safe family-oriented organization for the future. Historically, we don’t get very many members to vote. I would like to see that change this year. When a lot of people get out there to vote, it shows those who are running for a position that it actually means something. This is a way for everyone to get a little involved even if you don’t want to hold an office. So, please get out and vote. I look forward to being your President for another year and to seeing what we can accomplish together.

I replied with a friendly reminder that I am a one-person team and I’m always accepting content as I cannot attend all of the events or cover all of the races, but I have interviewed ATV racers before and featured ATVs on the cover, in the past, and will continue to do so. At the Bostwick Hare Scrambles, I snapped photos on Saturday during quad practice before finding Kayla Vawter to talk about her new column for the magazine The following week, I visited Spaceport Cycles to meet with Alvin Lopez, an old friend of mine from the motocross scene, who now works as a salesman at Spaceport. We talked about his new startup company, Maykers, Inc., a new action sports company. I’m also talking with a few veteran FTR members about starting the first FTR podcast; if any members want to be a part of this, please let me know! We are trying to figure out what kind of equipment we need to get started, and we’re also talking about having the races broadcast on a local FM radio station like they do at the GNCCs, so that’s exciting. I hope all of you have a chance to vote in the FTR Election since there are many open positions. I also want to thank Jonny Simpkins for his time served as FTR Treasurer; he is a longtime friend of my family but he is also a smart businessman and made my transition into the position of editor and publisher of magazine very transparent as I knew what was expected from the start in terms of generating revenue; he helped point me in the right direction. are Scrambles scoring is probably the best it has been since I started this job last year. FTR purchased a new antenna last year and we(scoring crew) have worked diligently every race to make the system work each and every time a rider passes thru. We can honestly say we are scoring electronically at 95% + every race(still need a few of you guys to slow down a little when you pass the antenna). The few minor glitches have been resolved fairly quick because Daniel White has taken the time out of his race weekend and provided the needed services to correct the glitches. Welcome to the age of electronics. They sometimes malfunction. That is why the backup scorers are so important. HS 3 was an electronic glitch that happened as the Sunday A.M. race was on the line. Still scored everyone just no display. Daniel came to scoring and fixed the glitch after his race and in time for the P.M. race. If you can do better we are open for suggestions. It’s more than just a massage.

efore Jenna Holland’s husband lines up in the B Open class, Jenna gives him a warm up massage to “help kind of wake up the muscles,” she said, which also helps with less cramping and all-around looseness. As a licensed massage therapist, Jenna has trained with the state’s leading massage therapists where she gained experience with injuries and post-injuries. She works in Brevard County by day, specializing in car accident victims, slip and falls and frozen shoulders. “I figured a lot of the guys could benefit at the races, so that’s how I got the idea,” she said. “The problem I’m having is a lot of the guys are kind of nervous about the whole massage thing, period, so I need to get the word out that it’s not the froufrou relaxation massage that you would get at the spa.” The work she does is called Myofascial Release, which she describes as releasing “the chicken skin” between the muscle and the skin. “By releasing that, you can, first of all, move more freely and then you can access muscles that have issues,” she said. “Last race, I had an older guy who raced quads and came to me saying his neck was hurting really bad and he could barely turn it, and so I worked on him for 30 minutes and he went out and raced, stopped back by after the race - he got second place - and he said if I wasn’t able to help him release his neck that he wasn’t even going to race that day. So, it makes me feel good knowing you’re helping somebody.” Jenna also offers relaxation massages for the race wives, which start at $25; the deeptissue massage is $35 because it’s more work on her body. “So far, I haven’t done any relaxation, they’ve all been deep-tissue, even the race wives that have come,” she said. “I’m out there to help people but also to support my husbands racing habit.” ook for Jenna under the Race Day Massage tent at all the Hare Scrambles.

s we all know, October was the month for Breast Cancer Awareness. There are many of those who have been either affected by breast cancer or know someone who has. This hits home to me and my brother as our Granny had breast cancer and survived. Many organizations show the support by wearing pink and donating to the cause. The GNCC series shows some support every year at the Ironman round. At the Cedar Creek Hare Scrambles, I was on the lookout for everyone who took the time to show their support.

my “Save the Hooters” shirt, I was wishing there were more. I stopped by the HBD MotoGrafx tent to check out Ronnie Hames’ “pinked” out dirt bike along with the added touch of a pink bra. Ronnie was giving out some pink ribbons and holding a raffle. I was touched that he stepped up to the plate and came up with a “Race for the Cure,” and I am anxious to see how much he raised as our FTR family is so giving when it comes to the 50/50 raffles.

AMA National Enduros on MAVTV The channel devoted an hour to the Sandlapper Enduro coverage this morning. They showed Jeremy Powell row 17D, then commented on the trouble row 17 was having with a bridge in section 4...I didn’t recognize any other names but I’m sure they’re were more FTR people. Sounds like another good reason to go ride an enduro, get to be on TV.

Kevin Vaughan is a stand up guy - I don’t usually call people out by name on the internet, but this really got my attention. The Big Scrub Trail Riders Home Office received a piece of mail yesterday; nothing out of the ordinary except that most of the business regarding our enduro is done with and our next race isn’t until next year. Inside was a check and a hand-written note from Mr. Vaughan stating that he couldn’t make it to our enduro this year but wants to contribute his entry fee to the club anyway. He went on to compliment BSTR and say that “You guys do great things for FTR and offroaders, thank you!!” Now, I have seen folks who have pre-entered and don’t show for the event, will sometimes tell us to just keep the entry... but this note and check were written and dated Oct. 13, a full 7-1/2 weeks AFTER our Enduro! I would like to return thanks to Kevin, for his generous donation, for keeping a good and proper perspective on what we’re all doing here, and also for reminding me of what the Florida Trail Riders is all about. Thank you, Kevin, and we look forward to seeing you at BSTR’s events in the future!!

- My brother was really into it and we just got a bunch of money and were like, Hey, we want to try it out and it was actually really fun - I’ve been to Pax Track, actually, and where we used to ride, it was tight and technical trees - I prefer the woods where it gets all nice and muddy

- I think I’m going to do pretty good. Some of the mud areas are kind of fun to slip through - I’m more psyched than nervous

“ Well my race went well, it was really fun racing through the mud and the tight trees, the only down part was my shifter broke on the first lap, I couldn’t go past third gear but I figured it was all I needed. Lap two came along and there was a mud hole me and a couple other guys got stuck in, it was really bad, but from there it was pretty shall I say challenging; the mud was slick and hard to get through, my bike was pretty much sideways for a few miles. It was fun though. I did end up going down cause the mud made my bike come to a complete stop... But overall it was a really nice race, I met a guy named Andrew out there on the practice lap and we kept together for most the race. I loved every bit of it, except that my shifter broke.”

Mike Belle:

Pit riding has gotten way out of hand at the first three Hare Scrambles this season. The biggest problem has been kids (no driver’s license) riding around the pits for either fun or transportation. We have had two trips to the hospital including a broken leg, that would have not happened except for this. The tolerance level for this has gone way, way down. Penalties are going to be handed out. The first penalty is a DQ that WILL count toward your year end score. That pretty much means that you will be out of the running for a year end award if you get caught pit riding. If kids need transportation in the pits, they better bring a bicycle or good walking shoes. Needing to go to the port-a-potty will not be an accepted excuse for kids pit riding. Yes, I’ve heard it recently, don’t bother. If you don’t know the rules on pit riding, look them up and read them carefully; they are in the rule book same as last year and the year before!

(EC) sections - The manpower issue was both in terms of time it took to build,and manpower intensive during the race. It’s an individual Club decision whether they want to donate that time to what is after all a short portion of the course. Time, however, was not the major factor “restricting” the Clubs from having EC sections, liability was. It came to light that having man made sections of the course could under certain scenarios increase our liability. There was even some concern that it could effect the insurance that FTR uses, and thus our ability (literally) to have races. About three seasons ago, the Hare Scrambles Committee looked at this. It was determined that AMA insurance gives more insurance ( pun intended) that we would be covered in those worse case scenarios. Thus, it was decided that clubs could have EC sections at their discretion as long as they carry AMA insurance.

Brooks Tomblin: I rode the Big Dawg Hare Scramble on the panhandle this weekend that had a dual sport class, it was the second largest class. This might be a good addition to to our Saturday venue.

Executive Committee Meeting Minutes Conference Call on October 5, 2011 at 8:30 p.m. 8:32 p.m. Meeting called to order by President Quorum noted to conduct business

through the pits and near spectators at the events. There was also concern about the motor home that was hit by one of the FTR vehicles as well. Jack requests that these individuals tone it down a bit and stop racing through the pits or the clubsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; designated parking areas. Mike spoke with Donny and Carol and discussed the situations. Mike stated that he was told by the Apollo club president that the damage to the motor home would be covered by the club. Mike also mentioned to them to keep an eye on their speeds through the pits and parking areas.

the peewee parents are being told that they are not allowed on the Cary Hunt peewee track at all. He was concerned about this action and wanted to (Enduro Chairman) know what had occurred. Mike stated that this was all a miscommunication between Donny and the clubs and that it is not being enforced as such and that if parents are on the track Donny and Mike just want them to help all riders and not just their own.

Jack - He asked if the clubs have been pre-billed for the FTR insurance the same way that we did

last year. Jonny stated that was not taken care of by the previous business manager and that he will get on it. Jack also stated that any policy whether it be the FTR-issued or from other sources has to have Florida Trail Riders, Inc. listed as additionally insured.

Jonny - Pit riding issue at the CFTR Hare Scrambles and what the ECâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stance is on the situation and what we are going to do about it. Discussion about the incident led to a motion by Jonny: EC signs a warning letter in regards to pit riding to be sent to all parents of the kids that were involved.

Jack second More discussion with Mike letting the EC know that he has talked to the parents and has informed them that the entire EC is not happy with what happened no matter if it was off-property or not. Jack withdrew the second to the motion Ford stated with no second there is no motion. Cary - Concerned about how busy the schedule is in such that work days are hard to get people to work because they are racing other events. He thinks the schedule needs to have more time in between events to allow for work weekends to accommodate the events. Jack suggested that the only thing realistically that can take place is to not allow back-to-back Hare Scrambles races on the schedule. Because of land issues and sharing properties with hunters and other groups, it is hard for the clubs to meet a schedule that is evenly placed through the season. After much discussion Ford suggested that at the next sanction meeting, and before, that we insist 12 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | November 2011

that the clubs do not schedule back-to-back Hare Scrambles dates. Deborah - She requested approval to publish the revised Rule Book. EC approved the Rule Book for publication. Ford - Why are the date and the address incorrect for the nominations ballot in the magazine? Deborah stated that it was a timing issue and an oversight on her part to catch it. There is a blurb on web site stating that the magazine is incorrect but that the web site is correct and that if any show up at the incorrect address they will be forwarded to Bill Drymon immediately. Ford - He suggested that some of the Land Use Fund money be used to help Dirty Foot Adventures open back up their doors. He suggests that they have a nice riding area and suggests that FTR donate $1,000 to help them open back up. Jack stated that to use that money for private land use sets a bad precedence and is going against what the intention of that Land Use Fund was. It is to support public land use. He stated that to use that money to help a for-profit organization is not a good idea. Mike stated that the use of the money seems to be narrow and therefore does not get used. Jack stated that if we do this once then that opens the doors to more handouts to for-profit organizations and not necessarily in support of land use for the public level. Deborah stated that if this is what we want to do then we need to address the rules around the Land Use Fund so that it allows use of the fund other than public land use. We have to change the rule book and the intentions of the collection of the Land Use Fund and possibly the collections of it all together. We collect that from every member for Land Use activities, not for- profits. Jack - We presented a draft policy to protect memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal information that is collected and held on the FTR database. It is our duty as officers and a corporation to protect that data. Each one using or accessing the data needs to sign the policy that states they will protect that information. Jack made a motion that we adopt the policy of sensitive personal information data as drafted.

Cary seconded it. Vote: Unanimously accepted Jack - BM (business manager throughout the minutes) contract

Jack presented a draft contract that was slightly different from the previous one that had input for some changes from the EC. Mostly it established and defined in more detail time lines of duties expected since that seemed to be the issue with the first one used. Jonny motioned to accept the BM contract with the two changes that were discussed, and to post it on the web site ASAP.

Mike second Unanimously accepted Jack - He asked if banquet results are complete.

Jonny stated that there was a serious lack of information that was not and has not been passed down from the banquet committee. He and Deborah have attempted to get the information without much success. Ford suggested sending him the questions that need to be answered and who to ask and that he will direct them to those individuals and get the information if it is still available. Jack - Asked if the HS Score Keeper is accessing the FTR database and handling email and telephone inquiries from HS riders. It appears that Don St. John has elected to not access the database. Ford told Mike to talk to Don St. John. Meeting adjourned at 10:45 p.m.

ENDURO Files

This event is one of the best events that Florida e are three events into the Enduro has to offer. The weather turned cool for the day season now and it has been a good and some earlier rains during the week kept the season so far. First was the Lochloosa dust at bay. With some fairly serious elevation Enduro held in late August. The event was held changes for Florida, some tight technical sections on the St. Johns River Water Management District and some open sand trail, there is quite mix of property in Alachua County, which, in years conditions in this event. Orange State ENDURO Brooksville, FL - Tyler Trammell, of Dahlonega, Georgia, was the overall winner at the 35th Orange State Enduro. Tyler topped 192 other riders and lost a total of just five points in the 60+ mile race held about 55 miles north of Tampa, in the Croom Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest. The course was all woods, sand whoops and the occasional reclaimed quarry pit - no roads at all. The race was laid out with five sections of 15-, 10-, 6-, gas stop, 11- and 16-miles. The fourth section had some arrow issues that caused it to be reduced to observation check status after the race. Trammell dropped 4, 1, 0, 0, 0 for his five point total, so he was unaffected by the fourth section change. Two more Georgians: Kody Fennell and Dillon Swaim both dropped 5, 2, 0, 0 for seven points and second and third overall. Hunter Williams of Rocky Face, Georgia dropped 5, 2, 0, 1 for eight points and fourth overall. Landon Smith had a 5, 2, 0, and 1 for fifth overall. These young guys rode much of the NEPG/AMA National Enduro Series this past year and did well. In fact, Hunter competed in the previous day’s National Enduro in Indiana. He won the Open A Class in that race, which gave him the Class Championship for the year by a narrow margin over Chase Bishop. Hunter also finished 14th Overall in the NEPG Standings for 2011 which means he’ll be one of the top 15 riders running in the Pro Class in 2012. Kody finished the year at third in the 250A Class and Tyler was fifth. We’ve definitely got some fast young guys in the Southeast. I’m beginning to sound like a broken record on weather conditions but this fall has started out great in the Southeast! Once again clear blue skies, morning temps in the upper 40s and it only

hit 82 degrees after the race was over. A couple of inches of rain earlier in the week once again reduced the dust. The Orange State was co-sanctioned as the third race of the season for FTR and the fourth race of the season

for the Southeastern Enduro and Trail Rider Association (SETRA). The Suncoast Trail Blazers were the promoting club and they put in a lot of long, hot days in the Florida sunshine to put on the race. They even had some Polynesian dancers as checkers for the section after the gas stop. (Some hot, some not! Sorry guys, I can’t lie) A big ‘Thank You’ to the club as well as the Florida Forest Service who work together to put on the event! This was my fourth year racing the Orange State. Being a north Georgia B rider, I have to admit that I struggle like a small beached whale in the sand whoops! I’m actually proud of my 44 point score even though I was nowhere

near trophying. The fast guys make it look easy but sitting back, twisting the throttle and keeping the front end up through the whoops is a lot easier said than done! Especially at about mile 55 out of 60! But I do enjoy a lot of variety in the terrain I ride and I count this race as one of the most physically demanding courses I’ve ridden in recent years. Speaking of the fast guys, when they fall, it can be ugly! Ask 40A rider Tim King - some of the fast whoops had some BIG pine tree roots in them. In the club’s defense, I’d say the roots got exposed more and more as the race went on. Tim hit one of the roots at high speed, got launched off the bike and hit a pine tree with his back (among other parts). While he was on the ground, another rider hit the same root with similar results. Tim had to be helped back to the pits but Larry Neilson of Tallahassee suffered a broken leg and was taken to the hospital. So far Tim is only reporting some really bad bruises. He’s already met his quota of broken bones in recent years! The course definitely showed a rider what kind of condition you’re in. They have some tight, twisty areas that weave around some humps and quarry pits that you wouldn’t expect to find in Florida. You had to be on your toes for sudden log crossings and roots of varying sizes. One or two hills could require a second try if you chose a bad line or someone made a mistake in front of you. And then you had plenty of sand whoops to pound the average rider into submission. The club had rehabbed portions of the trail and cut some new single track that definitely made the course more fun and less brutal than previous years. Chaplain’s The month of November means more than just getting a couple days off and filling your gut with turkey and taters.

It’s a great time to reflect and give thanks.

e, who are members of the Florida Trail Riders (FTR), have much to be thankful for. What’s really cool is that I get the opportunity to hear it directly from you. In my article this month, I want to share the names of four men who have personally told me how much they appreciate the camaraderie, friendship and compassion of the FTR membership. et me begin with Ken Harris. As many of you know, he had a heart attack recently while playing hockey. (I knew that darn hockey was not good for your health.) As he shared his story, it was amazing how clear it was that God wanted to keep him alive for a purpose. Ken will tell you it was to get married. He and I had spoken a couple times as they attempted to set dates. However, their wedding ceremony didn’t exactly turn out the way they had planned. Because of his unexpected heart attack, an FTR friend of mine, Don Henkel (I knew him back when his son was racing), married Ken and his fiancée in the ICU waiting room just before he was moved to the surgical room for heart surgery. Ken is now smiling with his new lease on life and ever grateful for the friendships he has made with the FTR family. Because of the medication that he is currently on, he may not be lining up with

his Super Senior C friends in the near future but his heart is certainly there with them. Congratulation Ken, not many people get a second chance!

nother gentleman is Jochy Gomez. He was competing in one of the last two races, last season, in the Super Senior B class, when he had a fall and took a handlebar in the gut. It was painful, but he finished the race. The next day he was at the doctor’s office. After persistent pain and a series of tests, the doctors tell him that he has stage three prostate cancer. Wow. What would have happened if he had not been racing and continued with business as usual? The treatments he is now undergoing in Texas might not have been an option. Even during this low time in his life, he had nothing but praises for the FTR family. By the time you read this article, he should be winding up his time in Texas and headed home. Please continue to pray for his wife and 7-year-old daughter who are still here in Florida, as they deal with this new challenge in their lives.

ven though I was at the race the day Michael Goodman got hurt, I didn’t hear about it ‘til after the fact. With a severely broken pelvis, not to mention the other collateral damage, he was in a lot of pain. However, Michael was still himself; all smiles when I walked into his dark hospital room. When I saw him that Sunday afternoon, he told me that his racing days are over...for a while, anyway. If you have known him as I have, it is hard to imagine him not seeing him on row 1. We are grateful for his

“Giving Thanks” time in FTR. He said he will be around. He wants to stay active in his club as well as FTR. Michael, I know you have much to be grateful for, even though you are facing another surgery in your future. Get well, my friend. We’re praying for you. Lastly, I want to mention Dan Lichtenwalter. This past weekend, at the Azalea City Hare Scrambles in Bostwick, Florida, my buddy Dan decided to take a bark and soil sample during the practice lap. Unfortunately (or maybe it is fortunately) he doesn’t remember a thing. In the process, he received multiple facial fractures and a broken femur. In the couple of phone conversations I have had with him the last 48 hours, each time he has reiterated how grateful he is for his FTR Family and the longtime friendships he shares with his club – Big Scrub Trail Riders. By the way, don’t worry about that black eye, it’s an improvement.

e all have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving season. I, like those just mentioned, am grateful for the friendships I share with my FTR family. I am also grateful to my wife and two children who share this sport with me. I am grateful to a loving Heavenly Father who genuinely cares for me and forgives me when I stray. As the weather cools down in Florida, the racing season heats up. Whether your a beginner or a seasoned veteran, these tips will help you have a more successful season.

1. Remember to breathe while you are riding. This may seem like a no-brainer but many riders have the tendency to hold their breath during some stressful riding situations. Try to remember to take steady breaths during your ride or race. This will give your body enough oxygen to maintain a good pace, reduce fatigue keep the dreaded arm pump to a minimum. 2. Alternate between the inside and outside lines during practice. By doing this you will practice 100% of the track and give yourself two times the opportunity to make passes during a race. 3. Use your body to position the bike. When spectating beside any size double, triple or tabletop you will notice many riders using the back brake to

lower the front end of their bike for the landing. While this is a valid technique I personally prefer to use my body to position the bike. You will want to grip the tank firmly with your knees and use your feet on the pegs to position the front of the bike. 4. Ride loose! - Try to ride with your body as relaxed as possible. You will become more fluid and less tired. I don’t mean ride lazy or unsafe, just relax where possible and you will find that you can stay out on the track longer. 5. Race the track You’ve probably heard the expressions “Race the track” or “Ride your own race”. Just focus on your own riding and maintaining a good pace on the track. Don’t worry about the other riders because you will end

up riding with similar speed riders if you focus on your own riding and where you can improve on the track. 6. Always roll the track first. When riding at a new track or one that you usually ride, it is important to take it easy on the first lap. Even if the track is the same as it w as the last time you rode it. You never know what kind of ruts, kickers and minor changes that may be present. Slowly increase your speed lap by lap until you reach your usual pace. 7. When going through a berm or rut, be sure to weight the outside peg and keep your outside elbow up. Enjoy your ride and be safe!

hen I first noticed the #92 Kawasaki of Karlynn Beam racing around the Hare Scrambles, I wondered if Adam Cianciarulo’s sister had finally picked up dirt bike racing, but she rides horses. I thought about the long hair flying out from under the #92 until the same girl appeared with a new number, #531, and it was then I realized that the only thing Karlynn Beam had in common with Adam - one of the fastest teenagers to ever come out Florida - was that she was fast, too. So, I found her on Facebook and snapped a few pics of her at the Bostwick Hare Scrambles before turning to Glenn Gardner of G2 Photos for something better. Glenn said he knew Karlynn but had never spoken with her personally - “She races a Kawi 100 in the same class as my youngest son Junior B. She is one of the fastest riders in that class,” Glenn told me. After chatting with her on Facebook, I called and left a message on her voicemail to set up this interview, delighted once the Alabama native returned my call... 2011 November Florida Trail Riders Magazine | 19

(phone rings) JS: Hello? KB: Hey, Jenn. It’s Karlynn - (pronounced car, lyn). JS: Oh, so, that’s how you say your name! KB: Yes, ma’am. JS: Cool. So, how was your weekend at Bostwick? (She

finished 8th out of eight in Junior B and was only scored for one lap.) KB: It was pretty good. I didn’t get that great of a start, but I kind of worked my way through the pack and I think I came around the first lap in third and then the second lap I came around and I got up into second, I actually caught the leader, and then I was coming around to the chicane and my bike seized up so it stopped working and it lost all the radiator fluid, so it overheated and quit. JS: Wow. KB: Yeah, it wasn’t too good of a weekend. JS: Why do you think that happened? KB: The radiator actually had a cut in it and it split in half, I don’t know... JS: Has that ever happened to you before? KB: No, ma’am. JS: So, you must have been riding it pretty hard, then? KB: Yeah... JS: How’s the rest of the season been so far? KB: It’s been pretty good - the first race at Lake City, I won it; I was dead last off the start and came back and won. I was pretty happy about that. At the second Hare Scrambles...I didn’t get that good of a start, either, because all the 125s beat me off the line, and I think I’d fallen and lost a couple of places and then I just came back and did my best and got third. JS: And you didn’t go to the first Bartow, are you going to the second one? KB: Probably, yes. JS: What is it like racing against the guys? KB: I like it. I like the challenge. It’s definitely a good experience because it’s made me get faster and stuff. JS: I bet! Those boys don’t care who you are! They will push anyone around! KB: They will (push me around) It’s happened. JS: When did you start riding dirt bikes? KB: I was two years old and I had actual bicycle training wheels on my JR50. We used to live in Alabama so they weren’t too big on racing there and then we moved to Florida a couple of years ago and we went to a race in Reddick, Fla., at the track there and I just started loving it then, and we found out from a couple people there about FTR and just started going to the races. JS: So, you started on motocross? KB: Yeah, a little bit of both. I do motocross like mainly whenever we don’t do FTR but I also do GNCC. JS: Which do you prefer?

KB: I like the trails because I’m more successful at that. JS: And how old are you? KB: I’m 15. JS: Are you in high school? KB: Yeah, I’m a sophomore. JS: Nice. Are you the only one in your school who races? KB: There’s a couple of people I know that race but they

race motocross and they don’t really know what FTR is or nothing like that. JS: And where is that? In Middleburg? KB: Yeah, it’s up in Jacksonville; we lived like 30 minutes away from the last race (at Bostwick). JS: Cool. So, you used to be #92 before? KB: Yeah, we bought a bike from Adam Cianciarulo; he’s like the top amateur rider, and we just stuck with that number because he’s just like one of the people that I like to watch ride because he’s so fast. JS: Then you changed your number to #531? KB: Yeah, it’s my birthday, so we just stuck with that. JS: Awesome. What’s your family like? KB: My dad and my mom always come with me to the races. I have a brother but he doesn’t really participate in that. JS: But your mom is cool with coming to the races? KB: Yeah, she loves it. JS: Nice. What is your favorite part about racing? KB: Because I like to win and I like to do good and I just like the intensity of it and all the hype about it and stuff like that. JS: Does your boyfriend race? KB: No. JS: So, that’s cool, don’t you think? KB: Yeah, I think so. JS: Do you have any long-term goals in racing, or are you just having fun? KB: Yeah, I want to be the first girl to race in GNCC in the XC1 class, not like racing with the girls in GNCC, like racing with the guys. That’s definitely something I want to do, and I definitely want to go to college and if that doesn’t work out then I want to be a lawyer. JS: Awesome. Who else do you look up to at the races? KB: I like Mike Alessi and Adam (Cianciarulo), of course, and Ryan Dungey and a bunch of pros like that. Ashley Fiolek - she’s real fast and I like the way she rides; she’s real smooth. JS: So, that’s why you’re racing in Junior B, so you’ll be ready for XC! I definitely respect you for that. Was it your dad’s idea? KB: No, we just always done that and I like racing with the boys. JS: So, that’s why you’ve been racing with the guys! I definitely respect you for that. Was it your dad’s idea? KB: No, we just always done that and I like racing with the

boys. JS: Cool. And you started riding a bigger bike this year? KB: Yeah, I got it a couple of months ago. It’s a 125 Yamaha...I can’t, like, go fast on it like my other bike, so I don’t really like to ride it but it’s a good learning curve for me, you know, it’s definitely good to have one. I’m starting to ride it a lot more so maybe the last couple of races I’ll ride it and see. JS: How tall are you? KB: I’m 5’2. JS: Oh, yeah, there’s definitely more room to grow!...Have you always been on Kawasaki? KB: Yeah, pretty much. I like green. JS: What’s one thing that you want to work on to get better? KB: Maybe turning the throttle more; I’m, like, scared of it...It’s such a bigger bike and I can’t really go that fast on it and my cornering, yeah, I can work on that. JS: Plus it weighs more, right? KB: Yeah, it’s a lot heavier. JS: How do you train off the bike? KB: I have a road bike and I do that a lot, and I run and we go riding during the week usually one time, and then we go both days on the weekend. JS: So, you must be pretty busy. Do you do anything else? KB: I love shopping and getting new things, especially new gear and stuff...I need some new

gear; I got holes wearing through the knees where my knee braces tear holes in them. JS: I have to ask: where did you get your name from? KB: Well, my dad’s middle name is Karl and my mom’s middle name is Lynn so they kind of worked together. JS: That is so cool! What’s your brother’s name? KB: His name is Colby. I don’t know where they got that. JS: Do you like living in Florida? KB: I definitely like it more here than Alabama. JS: What’s your favorite thing about FTR? KB: I love how people are so nice and friendly; everyone is always smiling and having a good time so I definitely like it. JS: It’s a little bit different than the motocross track, right? KB: Yeah, definitely. JS: Cool. So, what are you looking forward to in the next couple of races?
