Hello, FTR Family - Can you say 2013? Where did 2012 go?

So much happening, and happening fast. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas as well as a delightful New Year’s. As I write this, we are getting ready to make our annual “pre-Christmas” pilgrimage to Tennessee. We always look forward to visiting with Twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 friends and working around

the old cabin. Our time there is always great. If we are able to make it back in time, we will see you at the first race of 2013.

When 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven’s gate. Their smiles were contagious; their laughter filled the air. They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.

They were filled with such joy; they didn’t know what to say.

As the days of Christmas approached, our nation was struck with a horrific tragedy in Connecticut. Naturally people asked, how could this have ever happened? The answer to that question is simple. Right now, evil exists in this world and always will until God decides to remove it. Could it have been prevented, maybe? However, that is what politicians will be debating for months to come. If you would like to speak with me privately about it, please contact me. During the meantime, I thought I would leave you with this poem written by Jocelyn Van Buren who shares some unique thoughts about that sad day. Please pray for those families as they deal with the grief they will facing.

They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.

Be sure to spend time with your family and friends and tell them how much you love and appreciate them this holiday season. Until then, I will look forward to seeing you on the line at the next race!

“I’m taking back my nation. I’m taking back my schools!

Your friend,

Andy Dickson

FTR Chaplain Super Senior A #121

“Where are we?” asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse. “This is heaven” declared a small boy. “We’re spending Christmas at God’s house.” When what to their wondering eyes did appear, But Jesus, their Savior, the children gathered near. He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same. Then He opened His arms and He called them by name. And in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring those children all flew into the arms of their King

Best wishes

and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace, One small girl turned and looked at Jesus’ face. And as if He could read all the questions she had He gently whispered to her, “I’ll take care of mom and dad. “Then He looked down on earth, the world far below He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe, then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand, “Let My power and presence re-enter this land! “May this country be delivered from the hands of fools” “Then He and the children stood up without a sound. “Come now my children let me show you around. “Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran. All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can. And I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight, “in the midst of this darkness,” I AM STILL THE LIGHT.”

or she is racing motocross, enduros, supercross, hare scrambles, or just playing around—the time on your bike is bliss. When I ride, the computer screen in my mind that is typically completely covered by word documents, PDF files, projects, and to-do lists suddenly becomes cleared as if all of those other parts of life are been minimized and all that is remains is the soundtrack of my bike playing in the background. That’s why after my first practice on Saturday, when my wrist was aching, the only thing on my mind was racing the next day. So I kept my wrist wrapped, took some Advil, and took it easy the rest of Saturday. I washed my bike, cleaned the gear, and helped my boyfriend Scott get his bike and gear ready for Sunday’s races too. After watching everyone practicing on Saturday, there wasn’t a person at the track strong enough to keep me off of my bike! I wrapped my wrist, put on my glove, slid my wrist brace over the dressing and glove, then duck-tapped it together—off I went. Even though it was a little sore and swollen after the motos that wrist felt golden during my races! It was so worth it to throw a little sand at Bithlo! Even better yet, I was able to finish the weekend with a 1-1

Proposal #1 (Written by: Mike Belle) Purpose: To move the Saturday rider’s meeting to correspond to the new race time schedule.

in the Women’s class and a 4-5 for 4th overall in Youth 16-24, as I mentioned before, there is just something special about Bithlo. Sometimes when life gets overwhelming or when we see our friends get hurt; I think we all may think for a split second, why do we subject our bodies to these risks in our down time when other people are at home relaxing? At the heart of it is heart—like FTR, like Bithlo, motocross itself and dirt bikes are special. They are inanimate objects that have the ability to steal our love. They provide us an escape from everyday life that is unknown to people outside the sport. They help us learn about how strong we are and more about ourselves. Most importantly, dirt bikes bring us together with other like-minded people who aspire to grab a throttle full of life. Motocross is special to all of us, but these are the shining reasons why it is so special to me. - LG

year. The rider will be scored only under that registered number during the competition year. To keep a rider number (bike #), members must renew their FTR membership in before July 1st.

A motion was made by Deborah Broderick to accept the proposal and it was seconded by Bill Jenkins. The motion PASSED and will be published in the magazine and presented for a second vote at a subsequent committee meeting.

Petition for demotion #1: Mr. Dario Mazzitelli petitioned the committee, through an interpreter, to be allowed to race the “C” division (Sun.) after having raced one race in the “B” division. Apparently Dario is a new racer and does not speak English very well. Somebody talked him into entering the “B” division without his full understanding of what he was getting into.

HARE SCRAMBLES MEETING MINUTES

ithlo has always been one of my favorite tracks. It was probably the sand that I always loved so much… but it could have also been the two different types of dirt. Or maybe it was the concrete start, or maybe it’s that special east side atmosphere. Regardless of why, I always get excited to race Bithlo and that’s where the FTR MX series took us for round four! It had been over three years since the last time I even rode Bithlo as timing, school, and scheduling had been working against our reunion. As I mentioned in my first column, there is something special about the Florida Trail Riders MX series that just makes it unique—I think Bithlo is the same way and round four certainly didn’t disappoint! There was one of the best turnouts of the series thus far and we were lucky enough to have some fast guys like Matt Boni and Kyle Goerke come out to lay down some fast laps over the weekend. There was also a lites dash for cash race sponsored by Champions at half time and a Clydesdale, senior “Donut Dash” for the older guys! Topping it all off, the weather could not have been any better for December motocross racing! The only downside to my weekend was missing the “Donut Dash” and a lot of spectating because I was nursing a strained left wrist. Even with a delicate wrist, Bithlo was an extremely welcomed break from the stresses that I had been plagued with as the fall semester of my senior year in college was coming to its close. There is truly nothing that compares to the feeling of railing through a sand corner or perfectly landing a jump. I suppose racing is a sort of escape for everyone who rides a dirt bike. Whether he

Proposal #2

(Written by: Deborah Broderick)

Purpose: To bring our rule book into line with how our membership software keeps track of rider numbers when memberships expire. Chapter VII Hare Scrambles Scoring A. General Currently reads: 2. A rider can register only one number per class per competition

Mr. Chris Wise petitioned the committee, through a letter, to be allowed to race the Evo-B class after self promoting and having raced two races in the Evo-A class over the last two years. He does not now feel he can be competitive in the new class and desires to race with “his peers” in the Evo-B class. There was some discussion among the committee and the majority felt like only two races over the last two years was not sufficient data to allow a demotion at this time. A motion was made by Allen Pearce and was seconded by Troy Stainbrook to dis-allow Chris the demotion at this time. The motion PASSED. The committee wanted Chris to know that he is welcome to resubmit the request after another few races. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. Mike Belle (HSC Chairman)

[Editor’s note: When I posted on the FTR Magazine Facebook page [facebook.com/FTRmag] looking for cover shots, I received an email from a girl named Kaitlyn, who sent me a picture of her kissing her boyfriend, Logan, at a recent race and this message: Please consider for the magazine cover, my boyfriend doesn’t have a license and we don’t have a fancy setup like the others but together we make it work, I get up early help him load and set up and make sure he gets to the races. It would mean a lot to both of us being in the magazine not only am I his girlfriend I am his crew:)” So, at the Okeechobee Hare Scrambles in December, I caught up with them and learned how Logan entered his first FTR race earlier this season in the Beginner class and has already been promoted to the C200 class. Then, after the race, we chatted via telephone. JS: Hey, Logan. I know you’re fairly new to FTR. How did you hear about it? LS: One of my neighbors actually used to be a service manager at Hap’s Honda here in town and I’d always see him working on guys’ bikes for the FTR and my dad rode enduros for the East Coast Enduro Association [ecea.org] for years, so the Hare Scrambles was kind of something that we could both go for fun. JS: What was your first event? LS: The first event I rode was the season opener at Bartow I think in September. I rode his (dad’s) 450 in the Beginner class. I think I got a fifth, but I mean I really didn’t feel like I earned it. The whole third lap I was huffing and puffing. I was done. I was just trying ot finish. I didnt think I was going to get even a top 10. JS: And it wasn’t long before you got bumped out! LS: Yea, I rode Bartow, I missed out on Daytona because I thought it was going to storm so I didn’t bother going to that one, and then I rode the second Bartow event [I got a second] and then Myakka [a third] so that promoted me to C200. JS: Okeechobee was your first race in C200 and, I’m looking at the scores, you got third? LS: Yep. There was only four guys. Honestly, I’m just glad that I finished three laps because I’d never ridden the longer course and that was a lot rougher. Saturday’s almost a piece of cake compared to that, so that was a lot more difficult. I checked C250; I think there was like 15 guys and only the top six or seven did three laps so it shows me even with more people I wasn’t that far off the pace. JS: And you were less than 15 minutes behind the first place guy? LS: Yea, Kaitlyn and my dad were watching when I came through and they said, the first lap, I was like a minute off

Kaitlyn: I love the starts when

I get to hold the bike. The starts always make me nervous, even when I watch them on TV. In my head, I’m saying a prayer. It’s nerve-wracking.”

the lead, and the second lap, I was like four minutes - I had a crash and my throttle got stuck so I had to pull off and fix the throttle quick, and I didn’t quite fix it all the way, I just got enough to where I could ride it, but what are you gonna do? The whole third lap, I was tired, I couldn’t do anything so I kind of fell off the pace hard on the third lap. JS: Which was your favorite so far? LS: Yea, I’d have to say that the second event at Bartow was probably my favorite. I lost that one because of not being in shape; I had a crash at the end. I lead that race for like 45 minutes and the last lap, the last three miles, I crashed and I hurt my thumb and it hasn’t been the same since. It’s still painful and that was back in November. JS: On your throttle hand? LS: Yea, it was swelled up for two weeks straight and it’s still kind of tender, but I just kind of ignore it. JS: Yea, right. It doesn’t hurt ‘til the bone shows. LS: I rode my dad’s WR450 at the first Bartow event just because that’s what we had and that’s what worked and I rode that and that thing just tired me out. When I was up there, I noticed the KTM 200 that I now have, sitting up there and I decided I’d call him come Monday and see if he had sold it yet at the races or if he still had it. I think I called him Monday night and talked to him and went up and picked it up that night. JS: Where? LS: I think he was from...kind of right in between Bartow and Ft. Myers, so it wasn’t too bad for me that I had to go there and get it. And then shortly after that, my dad rode mine and liked it and found a really good deal on a 2007, one year newer than mine but the same bike, 200XC, so we now have basically the same bike. JS: Is this like your first bike, or remind me when you started riding? LS: No, I think I got my first motorcycle when I was like 8. I’ve been riding off and on for years. When I was younger, I did a little motocross riding and stuff like that, but I haven’t done a whole lot of real racing in years, especially the offroad racing is new to me. JS: So, which do you like better? LS: I enjoy it. It’s certainly good to have a place just to ride. There’s not a lot of places here to ride trails in Florida so it’s nice just to be able to relax, go camping, ride and I enjoy the racing and the competitive part of it. I like it better than motocross. Motocross is kind of short and sweet and to the point and this is more like a getaway, a vacation if you will. JS: That’s a good way to put it. I’ve never really thought of it that way. LS: Yea, motocross is racing Saturday afternoon so you continued on next page

show up Saturday morning, race and go home Saturday night. You don’t really hang out and have a fire, cookout, tell stories and all that. JS: It’s definitely a family sport. LS: Yep, I have my dad there, my girlfriend and my dog. JS: That’s all you need! LS: Yep.

JS: That’s hilarious. So you’re dad’s like all in? LS: Yea, we’ve got a couple old bikes around here that he’s thinking about running in either the Evo or the Vintage class. I told him if he wants to get in shape, he should ride Saturday and Sunday. That will put you in shape quick. JS: You guys live in Sarasota? LS: Yea, we’re here in Sarasota and there’s

really nowhere to ride. I think that’s the biggest problem. I try to ride as much as I can now to get back into shape. I feel like that’s one of the biggest things stopping me is just getting tired and slowing down because I just can’t go that fast because I’m weak and there’s nowhere really local to ride to get in shape. I’d like to be able to ride once or twice a week and the closest place is an hour-and-a-half.

JS: Have the FTR members been pretty friendly to you? LS: Yea, I haven’t met too many people, really, but I talked to a couple guys in the Beginner class and they’ve all pretty nice and really helpful as far as getting into it and any advice. It’s easier to talk to each other when you share a hobby. We all have something in common; that’s why we’re there in the first place. JS: And that’s cool your dad is getting back into it? LS: Yea, I think he did one FTR event 5 years ago with my older brother. My older brother took my 125 and my dad and him rode the Croom Enduro but he ended up not even finishing that one. His old race bike broke down so other than that one race, he hasn’t done a race since 1995. He was huffing and puffing after the first one but he rode this last weekend and he said he felt pretty good. We actually went riding up at Croom on Tuesday right after. JS: Wow! That’s pretty impressive. LS: Yea, we didn’t wait too long. We just kind of decided - he wanted to go up and get some old bike that he’s thinking about running in the Vintage class and it was up near Brooksville, so we decided we were going to take the trailer and might as well just take the bikes and go ride for two or three hours while we’re there. JS: Cool. Did he get the bike? LS: Yea, it’s an old CanAm 175. I don’t even know anything about it. It looks un-rideable to me.

Kaitlyn on “Why Do I Do This?”

“When I first met him, I knew nothing about dirt bikes. I didn’t even know it existed and he showed me...I remember the first time we hung out and we were sitting on the couch watching the Anaheim Supercross race and he’s like, ‘This is what I like,’ so I just kind of started watching it. Then, we started hanging out more and he’s like, ‘This is not just a hobby. This is what I love and this is my life,’ so I said, ‘I like you so I’m going to get involved with it.’ It was funny at first watching it with him and he would say, ‘See how that guy took the line,’ and I would be like, ‘Wait, what line? I don’t see anything.’ But I slowly started learning and then I started learning about the people and it’s actually not that bad. It’s fun...I still have to get used to the whole sleeping outside thing, but it’s always a new experience and that’s what keeps us going.

JS: That’s awesome. LS: Got to get paid enough to go racing every weekend. JS: I know, believe me! LS: My older brother has like three master’s degree and my sister has a doctorate in law so even if I get a master’s, I’m still uneducated in my family.

JS: You have to join a club so you can get in there! LS: Yea, we were talking about joining Sarasota Area Dirt Riders and getting with them at their Hare Scrambles here in a month or so.

JS: That’s crazy! You have some big shoes to fill. So, tell me about your girlfriend and her role helping you. LS: She’s helped out a lot. Since we’ve been dating for almost two years now, I don’t have my driver’s license. I get it back at the beginning of January so that will be a big weight lifted but she’s helped a lot especially with driving to and from the tracks and she helps me load up all my gear and get everything ready, clean the gear when I get home. She’s been very involved with it. She doesn’t just show up to watch and leave.

JS: Yes! I think they are actually the first FTR club so they will be a good club for you guys. LS: My dad’s got all these old riding buddies so I think that’s why he didn’t join a club down here. His old club puts on a national enduro every year so we try to go up there every once in a while.

JS: Yea, if they show up at all! LS: Yea, I’ve been lucky.

JS: Where is that? LS: In Blaine, Pennsylvania. The Foggy Mountain Enduro.

Kaitlyn and her boyfriend Logan

practitioner.

JS: Nice. What do you like to do besides dirt bikes? LS: Umm...[long pause]. Not much else. I don’t really have any other hobbies. I played ice hockey in high school but I haven’t played in years. I mean, guns is a hobby, I guess? Does that make me sound like I’m too much of a redneck? I mean, really, between a full-time college student, part-time work and riding and racing, there is nothing else. There isn’t much else time left. JS: Exactly. Where do you go to school? LS: Kaitlyn and I both go to school at State College of Florida. We both hope to transfer to the University of Central Florida. JS: Nice. Do you know what you want to study? LS: I hope to get a bachelor’s and maybe a master’s in human services and do like alcohol and drug rehabilitation services and she’s going for nurse

JS: For sure. Anything else you’re looking forward to? LS: Well, I set a goal for myself, I think after the first or second race, I decided, and I don’t know if I’m being too forward, but my goal is to make it to B class by the end of this first season. I know it’s kind of high up there but I set that as a goal so, even if I don’t get close, I think I’ll be okay. JS: Yea, you always have to set goals. LS: And, you know, I have a couple of sponsors but I hope to get some more just to help out with everything. JS: Are you interested in Enduros? LS: Yea, I’d like to do the first round of the GNCC series here in Florida and I’d like to do one or two national enduros in 2013. JS: Have you ever ridden anywhere else? LS: I’ve done a lot of trail riding with friends but I haven’t ran any organized hare scrambles or enduros up there. Like I said, my dad’s involved with the Foggy Mountain Enduro and, even when I was on an 80, I can remember riding that and setting up arrows and running a checkpoint and stuff like that. So, I’ve got seat time but not race time. JS: So, you’re comfortable with the hills and rocks and stuff? LS: Yea, actually, that’s the only thing I can say about the FTR series that I kind of miss and want but I think they do the best course they can with what they’ve got. They kind of make the best of whatever hills they got but it’s kind of slim pickings. I’m used to an event where half the C riders never even finish; it’s just too technical. I mean, there’s nothing I feel that’s super technical with any of these events but it is fast, which is also fun. JS: Yea, so tell me about your sponsors? LS: Right now, I have two sponsors: DeCal Works and also a company probably no one in the FTR series knows about is MotoOption Clothing company, which was started by two brothers in Rochester, N.Y. They make clothing that they feel is for racers, like customized hoodies with your name and number on them and all kinds of cool stuff. I just recently got on their sponsorship program for the 2013 season. JS: Good for you. LS: I’m trying. Anybody else who would like to pay for my gas to a race... JS: Cool! Anything else you want to say? LS: Just thanks to FTR and my sponsors and my girlfriend who carts my butt around to the races. JS: She’s a keeper!
