Editor’s Beat Vote this month for FTR President

I

hope everyone takes a few minutes to cast his or her FTR ballot before November 30. I’m not certain of a time when we saw 3 (known) candidates running for FTR President. While I’m not comfortable publicly endorsing any candidate, I hope the voting members choose someone who is professional, fair and friendly. Remember, all

my gift to myself will be getting my motorcycle endorsement. Not that I have a motorcycle (yet) but it’s something I’ve been thinking about especially after driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway with my dad a few weeks ago. (He’s doing great for those of you wondering - Lane retired outside of Asheville and is living the dream doing whatever he wants everyday.) I can’t wait to grow up!

S

FTR Magazine’s newest advertiser, Riderspics.com caught me after the start at CFTR’s Hare Scrambles #3. you have to do is tear out the ballot on the previous page, or download from the FTR website, fill it out, scan it and email it to Uncle Bill. (His email address is on the ballot.) Or, you can snail mail it if you’re old school like that. But take the 5 minutes and vote. As we know from this year’s race for governor, 1 percent can make the difference.

A

nyway, it’s been a busy season and we’re not even to the halfway point yet. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the holiday break. I’m also anxiously counting the days to my 30th birthday and thinking

eptember counted my fourth year publishing the FTR Magazine and I’m probably the only one excited that the advertising rates have just increased, due to an increase in demand for the same space available. So check out the rates published later in the magazine. It’s still a deal to advertise in print and online, but it’s going to cost you just a little more. Still, where can you find such a dedicated, loyal and specific audience than the FTR membership? Some of the posts on facebook.com/ftrmag reach more than 10,000 views. That’s huge! Take advantage!

I

have been asking members to submit photos for years and it’s only recently that I’ve started receiving some, so thank you. I will print just about any photo you send and, you never know, you or your family member could be selected for the cover just by submitting a photo. Thanks, Nathan Collins! 10 Florida Trail Riders Magazine Letter to the editor:

To: Members of the Florida Trail Riders From: Mike Belle Re: Election for President

I

Hello fellow FTR members, ’m running for FTR President and would like to share my background and positions so that you can be better informed before casting a ballot in the coming election. I have been selfemployed since 1987 and have started and run two successful precision machine shop businesses in the years since. My partner bought me out of the first one in 1994, and I’m still involved in the second one. I think managing those companies through good and bad over 27 years gives me good background to help keep FTR on the right track as a business. I started riding at 16 years old but life caught up and other things got in the way. I was active in the Florida Trials Association during the 90s and worked my way up to competing in the Advanced class. I joined FTR and the Suncoast Trailblazers about 10 years ago, after taking a break from dirt bikes for a few years. My son and I did all of the FTR Enduros and Hare Scrambles for a couple of seasons, and then settled in to mostly just the Hare Scrambles series. Trying to run two full series was just too demanding. Last season I placed second in Golden Master B and was promoted to the “A” division. I have always been the kind of person who gets involved in helping with the sports and volunteer organizations that I am associated with. Initially, when joining FTR and Suncoast, I helped set up trail for both the Hare Scrambles and Enduros that Suncoast promoted. Over the next few years I worked into being a section leader, and eventually, Trail Boss for the first Mondon Hill Hare Scrambles near Brooksville. I’m still active helping my local club at every event we are involved with. I think it is very important for FTR leaders to have involvement with their local club and to help put on races from the local level. Having a good working understanding of what a clubs responsibilities are, compared to FTR, is vital when considering rule changes that will also affect the club. Clubs are the backbone of FTR and what we do would not be possible without them. In 2010, I wanted to get involved more with the FTR directly and do some things to help the Hare Scrambles series. I threw my hat in to serve as referee, but I did not get selected for that

position. A circumstance came up that caused me to volunteer my services as Hare Scrambles Committee chairman, and the Executive Committee appointed me to that position. Most of you will remember my involvement with the Hare Scrambles committee since I served in that capacity for four years and just recently stepped aside to pursue this endeavor. I consider it a very successful and productive four years. We cleaned up a lot of rules that needed to be cleaned up and created several new classes that are getting very good participation: including Sportsman 1 and 2, Silver Master A ans B, Pre-Modern and Plus 30. You can also review everything the committee did over the last four years because the minutes I wrote are complete and online, unlike in some years prior. Being available and being transparent are very important for any FTR official, and I have been in attendance at about 95 percent of the races that I represented while Chairman of the Hare Scrambles Committee (HSC). In addition to serving as HSC chairman, that position also serves on the Executive Committee (EC) and the Board of Directors (BOD). The EC served on made many tough decisions to get FTR back on the right track after some tough years. I also never missed a BOD meeting in those four years. Most of you know that I am almost always available on the forum to answer questions, explain rules or explain the actions of the committees I was involved with. I think this is an area where many officials past and present could do more. Although I resisted for a long time, after the encouragement of another FTR member, I have recently opened a Facebook account. This will give me a chance to have dialogue with members who use that medium instead of the FTR forum for whatever reason, and to be aware of any issues that are brought to light there and not the forum. Many good ideas come from these forms of electronic communication and the officials should not be so behind the times as to disregard them as a communication tool with the members. I would like to state my positions on several things since I have already been asked about some of them. First off, I think FTR is doing great, and there is not much I am interested in changing. My goal would be to maintain a conservative financial approach to how we spend any money and always go through the EC and BOD for any major expenditure. I would never want to see us spending more money than we are taking in and would definitely try to get things balanced long before we were ever in a position to need to borrow money. I think the “Land Use Fund” is fine the way it is. It is essentially a savings account that can be used for land use issues but is also there for any emergency use. However, in my opinion, and by recent constitutional updates, that would require the

From the Forum (on Croom):

Scott Hodgemire:

I’m still trying to regain the feeling (pain doesn’t count as a feeling) to my body.”

Richard Murwin:

Whoops? I didn’t see any of those...I did however see a bunch of small craters, one after the other for a few (dozen) miles...

All joking aside, I know that there are limits imposed by Forestry that restricts the course layout. It’s part of the Croom Enduro these days. I just need to lose about 60 lbs. and go faster like all those other people that seemed to be managing the whoops just fine. I got to see a few seconds of technique from a lot of the fast guys in the last 20 miles. Fantastic job Suncoast, loved every bit of it. Except for the part where I was exhausted... and the part where I was having close encounters with pine trees... and perhaps the beautiful butterfly checkpoint... that was just weird.”.

Brian Coughlin :

We have discussed some options and feel we can limit the number of whoops next year. We don’t want to make it too easy for you guys though.”.

approval of the BOD. I fully support all three of our current series, Hare Scrambles, Enduro and Motocross, and have no desire to eliminate or phase any of them out. However, if participation is reduced drastically, I am realistic enough not to support something that the riders and members don’t support. I recognize that Enduros are the roots of this organization, and I’m glad to see that it has had a mild resurgence of interest in the last few years. I also support Jeremy Powell’s efforts with the King of the Woods series and am hopeful this helps both the Enduro and Hare Scrambles series. However, I do want to see these series become or stay self supporting, financially, in the long term. In years past, we had a separate Hare Scrambles series for the quad riders. Bottom line, it didn’t work, and I am not in favor of trying it again. Most of the clubs appreciate the extra numbers the quad riders bring to their events, and it makes the costs easier to manage for them. It also seems that most clubs are trying to put in as much separate trail as possible, and this has almost eliminated the complaints about a torn up trail. These are just a few of the things I have been asked about and I figured others may be interested in them as well. The bottom line though is the President doesn’t make rules or make any earth shattering changes by himself. The President’s job is to chair the EC, BOD and General Membership meetings and schedule them when required or needed. Rule changes are done by a combination of Competition Committees, Board Of Directors and approval at the General Membership Meeting. The most important things for a President to know are what the rule book says, what his limitations are, how to get things done through the proper channels and how to lead. The elections are open the whole month of November. I encourage everyone to vote. We are electing the President, the Secretary and all Area Directors to serve on the BOD. You can vote for the President, Secretary, and only the Area Director who represents your area. Please vote for the people you feel will do the best job for the FTR. If I can answer any other questions you may have, please don’t hesitate to contact me on the electronic media, or by email or phone. Thanks for your consideration! AC: (Nods.) JS: Why? AC: Because I like them. JS: Have you ever ridden on a dirt bike? AC: (Shakes her head no.) Nathan says, “With Dad you did.” Dad races and she always wanted to ride with him. “She start riding in my lap around the yard before she was 1,” Nathan said. “Anything that moves she wants to drive. Within 10 minutes after every race she is ready to go again. JS: Avery, do you like the races? AC: (Nods.) JS: What do you like the best? AC: Racing and winning trophies. “The other peewee parents are so helpful,” Nathan said. “Almost all the peewee parents cheer for the other racers as much as they do their own. FTR is a great organization because JS: Hey, Avery. Congratulations on your race everyone is accepted, from the AA guys flying by today. Tell me, why do you like to race? you to the kids just starting out.” AC: Because my dad likes to. JS: Avery, do you like racing through the trees? JS: (Laughs) When did you start racing? AC: (Nods.) AC: Now. JS: Have you ever had any crashes? JS: Do you like four wheelers better? AC: (Nods.) JS: Bet you didn’t like that! AC: (Shakes her head no.) JS: Can you tell me what’s on your helmet? AC: Pink mohawk. JS: I like that a lot. I might have to get one of those for my bike. AC: You ride a bike? JS: Yeah, I ride a bike. I started on a three wheeler when I was your age. So, are you in school? AC: (Nods.) JS: What grade? AC: Pre-K. JS: What’s your favorite subject? AC: I don’t like those things. JS: What’s your favorite thing to do at school? Gatorback was Avery’s first race and she was so excited that she got third. - NC AC: Play on the playground. Nathan Collins: I have been riding dirt bikes JS: What’s your favorite food? since I was 4 on my parents farm and always grew AC: Animal cookies. JS: What kind of food do you eat up riding, but not racing. This is only my second season racing and I’m hooked. A friend of mine as a at the races? Ice cream. great motto that I race by: “3 laps and go to work on AC: JS: You must have a sweet tooth!

E d i tor ’ s N ote : When Nathan Collins submitted a photo (below) of his daughter, Avery, from her first race at Gatorback in the Quad Peewee B class, I knew I had to meet the 4-year-old rocking the pink mohawk on top of her helmet. I arrived at the Rodman Plantation just in time to watch Avery’s race and snap some photos. She finished first that day and afterward, I caught up with the Collins family while Avery stayed propped up on her dad’s hip.

Can you tell me about your family? AC: I have a mom (Mandy), a sister (Madison), a brother (Beau) and a dad (Nathan.) “We live in Brooksville and ride at Croom and on what use to be our beautiful yard,” Mandy said. “Amazing what those tires will do to your nice grass!” JS: Avery, do you have a pet? AC: Yeah, I have a pet, Ally. He bites like this (shows her teeth.) JS: What kind of dog is it? AC: I don’t know. ‘ Dad whispers to her, “Weimaraner.” AC: Weimaraner. To Dad, “What’s a Weimaraner?” Dad says, “That’s Ally.” JS: What do you want for Christmas? AC: A better skateboard. JS: What do you think about being a girl racing against the boys? AC: Every time they just go passed me. JS: You’ll get faster; you just started. AC: They go on the side of me, like on this side and on this side. JS: Does it scare you? AC: (Shakes her head no.” JS: You’re not scared, huh? AC: In the middle of the night I am, when the door’s open and someone makes a loud noise. JS: (Laughs.) All right. Well thank you for talking to me, Avery. I’ll let you go get cleaned up. §

We teach our girls that boys and girls are no diferent. If she wants to race with the boys, go for it! She can do anything she puts her mind to. Girls rock!” - Mandy Collins

“W

hen I thought of my 4-year-old little girl, I thought I would be taking her to dance class or cheering her on on the soccer field, not watching her competitively race four wheelers at the age of four. ” - Mandy Collins

Doug Robertson: I’m riding a 1974 Yamaha MX250 in the vintage class. (2:00 Saturday race) My son Dylan racing a 2008 LT-R450 in Quad-B (3:45 Saturday race) What a difference a few hours made! Dylan was one of the lucky that finished the 2+ hour race.
