Editor’s Beat What we do on the weekends
I
haven’t missed a race yet this season, at least not literally. But I have physically not been entered in the first Enduro and the second Hare Scrambles - the latter by choice, the former because my kickstarter broke. A lot of people told me to ride the Enduro anyway and “just push start it” (all day?!) but since it would have been my first time Testing out my tackling GoPro in the hotel the Little before HS #1. Brown Jug in South Carolina, I did not want to start off with a disadvantage so I watched from the sidelines that day. (I want to thank the Greenville Enduro Riders for hustling around and trying to find a 125 for me to ride at the last minute. You guys rock!)
I
I
t reminded me of times a child when my dad would tell his buddies when to meet up at the practice spot to go riding and we would be the only ones there on time. The longer we waited, while gearing up and unloading the bikes, the more I heard about doing what you say you’re going to do and not being “a rooster” as he called it when they crowed on and on but never actually followed through. We would eventually head out by ourselves for practice once my dad was tired of waiting and whenever we came back to the truck, his friends would be waiting for us and mad that we couldn’t wait for them!
I
don’t always keep every plan I make but I try and whenever it comes to racing or spectating, I will sacrifice my sleep and nights out with friends just to wake up before dawn to go sweat all day. I realize not everyone wants to do that because racing is something you’re born with, I think. Either you have it inside or you don’t. I interviewed R on C ommo III this month and he said he races because he wants to try and be good at something.
“
It’s not like you choose to race, you just do,” he said. I couldn’t agree more. Email me your thoughts: editor@floridatrailriders.org - JS

t’s been a busy season so far and I’ve been trying to keep it interesting by inviting new friends out to watch my races. You know that song, “You find out who your friends are?” I learned, once again, that not everyone can wake up early to spend their two days off sweating in the middle of a field. Recently, when I made plans with a friend to leave from my house early one morning for a race, they were a no call, no show. So I went solo and while on the
way the friend called to say they overslept. “Well, there’s no leaving late on race day,” I said hanging up and firing that person from my list of friends. You snooze you lose!

“Run the race with endurance, the course that has been laid out for you” (Hebrews 12:1).
haplain’s
Dear FTR Family, Corner n Florida, August is a warm month to kick off a new
racing season. The River City Dirt Rider Hare Scrambles course was great! They did a fantastic job launching the season. However, in all my years of racing, I do not recall a racing Saturday that insanely hot. Everyone was in survival mode. Speaking of which, as most of you know, Matt Denison (Super Senior C Rider) had a massive heart attack shortly after completing his race. Thankfully, his friends jumped right in and kept him alive until help arrived. Once again, this proves that the FTR family is wonderful people. It is so important to keep an eye out on what is going on around you. Let me commend you for doing just that. Remember, anything can happen to anyone at anytime. Thankfully Matt has recovered and is doing great! He is very grateful for your thoughts and prayers during this dramatic time in his life. He says, “It’s good to be alive!” The following Hare Scrambles races in September were almost as hot. The very next event, Gatorback, hosted by the Big Scrub Trail Riders was fantastic as well. The “new” land they had access to was wonderful. The club did a great job laying it out. What was most memorable for me that weekend was being stuck on the side of the road 14 miles from the track. A number of you stopped by to check on me; thank you for doing so. For those who wondered why we were being towed to the track at midnight, the fuel pump quit. Did we drive it Andy leads out Sunday the prayer at afternoon? Gatorback. Yes. Friends jumped right in Saturday morning, raced to Gainesville, picked up the part, dropped the tank, installed the part, reattached the tank, and fired it up. WOW! We have a wonderful FTR family. My biggest regret on Gatorback weekend was not being able to attend the Horse Shoe Tournament that has become so popular on Friday night. I got off work early so I could be there, only to sit on the side of the road. To Pete Magee, thank you for driving
October 2014
out to pick up my two boys so they could attend. That was so kind of you. They were not looking forward to waiting on a wrecker. To Jeff Mosier and the Big Scrub Trail Riders, thank you for your efforts in hosting a benefit to support Rider Relief. I so wished I could have been there. Jeff ’s tournament raised $1,825. FTR family, you are wonderful! Were you able to make it to the Central Florida Trail Riders event? I know that many waited to the last minute and then took a chance on the weather while others decided to ride the couch. If you showed up on Saturday to ride a quad, I’m sorry. That was a complete mudfest. CFTR did a great job keeping it going and rerouting on the fly. I have been in charge of events where this happens and there is nothing you can do but plow forward and make the best of a bad situation. To the quad riders, thank you for soldering on through. However, if you rode a bike on Saturday, the course was impressive. I think this was probably the best course CFTR has ever laid out. It had everything. There was slippery clay, deep sand, a little mud, off-cambers, up hills and down hills. My son Austin had a great start only to be held up with a bike issue (stick pushed the fuel petcock off). By the time he figured it out, he was too far behind to compete so he rode for fun. I did not know this at the time so I flagged him in at the beginning of his second lap to asked if he was all right. Thinking I knew my son, I thought he would be completely frustrated, aggravated and ready to quit. When I said, “What’s going on?” He replied, “I am having a blast! This course is so much fun!” What could I say? I gave him a little fuel and sent him on his way. Was the course nasty Sunday morning after the rain on Saturday (during the quad race)? Yes. However, again, CFTR came to the rescue. This club went above and beyond to make sure this event was the best it could be. They re-routed before the first race as well as during the event itself. As the wind blew and the sun popped out, it began to dry. By the end of the second lap ,it was fantastic. To the CFTR crew and the FTR family of volunteers, thank you! In closing, remember Jesse Ansley (Junior A rider) and Robert Mitchell (Super Senior B rider) in your thoughts and prayers. Jesse broke his ankle on Saturday and Robert broke his arm on Sunday. The good news is that both are on the road to recovery. I also want to say thank you to those attending the church service on Saturday night at 7:30. It has been great to see you there. ‘Til then…

out front R on Commo III
During
October 2014
the week,
Ron Commo III
looks like an average 24-year-old working full-time as a splicing and maitenance contractor for Brighthouse. But, on the weekends at the races, Commo is one of the fastest AA riders in FTR who also happens to be a former professional trials rider. Last season, Commo won the 2013-2014 FTR Enduro Series Overall Highpoint earning him the No.1 plate and more respect as a relatively-new Floridian and offroad racer. FTR Magazine caught up with Commo to find out more about his trials background, how he’s planning to be the best allaround offroad racer and why it seems like something is always wrong with his bike 5 minutes before the start.
“
Florida Trail Riders Magazine
I didn’t touch a dirt bike until 2009. I was terrified of them. I didn’t like them. I didn’t want to go fast. I liked going nice and slow and riding up rocks.” - RC
“
I’m still learning. I still don’t know how to go that fast in the woods. I’m still trying to figure that out. It’s hard to miss trees when you’re going fast.” - RC
Catching up with Commo: JS: Hey, Ron. Let’s start at the beginning. You moved here from Vermont? RC: Yeah, I grew up in Vermont until I was 14. Then we moved to Georgia for racing and I lived there until I was 19 and then we moved back to Vermont for a couple of years and then we moved from Vermont to here when I was 22. JS: And where is ‘here?’ RC: Davenport. JS: What’s your first dirt bike memory? RC: When I was 3-years-old, I started riding a Suzuki JR50 in my grandmother’s backyard. My dad, when it snowed in the winter time, would plow me a path in the backyard with the snow plow so I could keep riding even when it was snowing out. JS: Was it love at first ride?? RC: Yeah, they said they never could get me off the bike. I would be out there no matter what running tanks and tanks and tanks of gas. I think I blew up that 50 like four or five times. JS: Since your dad was a professional trials rider, was it kind of natural for you to ride, too? RC: Yeah, pretty much I picked it up as soon as I got on a bike. I could actually ride a motorcycle before I could ride a bicycle. JS: Did you start riding trials right away? RC: Yeah, I was actually riding trials on a motocross bike because they didn’t have anything, like when I was 6, they didn’t have anything that swapped over into trials. It was just adult bikes and they were just way too big especially for me because I was tiny; I never grew. So I never had a bike to ride that was small enough for me, and then they came out with a 50cc trials bike, which was completely different because you could actually ride trials with it. When I was 10 or 11, I switched to what we call big bikes, which are full size trials bikes and I went from a 50 Beta motocross bike that my grandfather toned down so I could ride it slow to a Beta 200 and I rode that for three or four years and I won some novice and beginner championships on that. Then I went to a 125s, which are more aggressive bikes because of the power. Everyone has to do 125s because that’s where you learn all your techniques because you can’t rely on the power of the bike to do whatever you want. You have to manhandle the bike to make it do what you wanted it to do. So I rode 125s and I ended up second in the 125 expert class and I rode some other expert classes. Then when I was 17, I switched to a 270. JS: Were you strictly trials back then? RC: I didn’t touch a dirt bike until 2009. I was terrified of them. I didn’t like them. I didn’t want to go fast. I liked going nice and slow and riding up rocks. JS: That’s funny. What was your best finish? RC: I won the 9-, 10-, 11-, and 12-year-old National championships and I won a lot of local stuff in the Champ and Pro class. Nationals was a little harder, I ended up fourth overall in the Pro Nationals. JS: talk about the trials scene? It’s pretty big up there? RC: Yeah, it’s not just a state thing, you do like all of New England. It’s just a really small community so it would take the whole New England to make up a series basically of probably 50 guys who show up to a race but there’s a lot of competition because there’s a lot of decent guys JS: For everyone who is wondering, what is trials? You
October 2014 just go slow over rocks? RC: Yeah, you have sections like at a National, you have 12 laid out sections that are roughly a minute-and-a-half long and basically you go in and it’s separated by class and there’s certain gates you have to go through, kind of like double greens but each class has it’s own double greens, and you have to go through that and then you can work your way through the section – it could be up a big dirt wall, up a rock wall, up hills, rocks, logs, stream beds, pretty much anything you can think of they would put us through on trials bikes didn’t matter what it was. They would put a sandy corner where there’s no traction and you have to go really slow right before you have to go up like an 8-foot wall. JS: It sounds a lot like Endurocross, no? RC: I think that the Endurocross more came from there being so many really good Enduro riders who weren’t being super challenged and weren’t getting the recognition. The guy who invited the Endurocross was actually a trials rider, Eric Peronnard, so he knew what it took to be a good trials rider and he wanted to try and get the trials guys and the enduro guys to race against each other and that’s how he made it to be: the guys who race offroad the best come race each other instead of being all scattered in different series. JS: That model seems to be working out. RC: Pretty much. Like CrossFit Games, they bring them all to one place and just make them do some gnarly stuff to show everybody what their skills really are. JS: So, when did you start riding offroad? RC: My first time on a dirt bike was at a National Enduro (in 2009) and I timed out because I messed up one of the resets and I took off on the gas stop reset and I had no idea, I was so confused and I didn’t know what happened so I just took off and I get to the next stage and they’re like, ‘Why are you here already?’ and I’m like, ‘What do you mean why am I here?’ I didn’t really know what was going on yet but after that I ended up like fifth or something in B and shortly after that I started winning the B class and then I won the B Open championship and I got some help – I was riding for TM Motorcycles out of Italy for the whole 2009 series and I was winning the A 200 the next year in 2010 but I lost by 2 championship points because I had to take two races off for trials because I had committed to the Trials Nationals so I missed winning a championship there. JS: Did things come naturally in the woods for you? RC: It came kind of naturally like I figured it out slowly. My first enduro was over 60 miles and I just tried to go as fast I as I could. We used to ride really fast on the trials bikes in the woods in between sections just playing around so we got good at throwing the bike around in the woods and jumping stuff but nothing major. I’m still learning. I still don’t know how to go that fast in the woods. I’m still trying to figure that out. It’s hard to miss trees when you’re going fast. I’m still trying to figure that one out. JS: Is that when you went to Europe? RC: In 2008, I went to the France World Championships, the Italian World Championship and the Czech Republic World Championships. That was incredible. You don’t even realize how cool like everything is over there, the architecture and how old everything is. It’s wicked nice and in Europe, trials - continued on next page

for them, you can just ride it down the street, so we could just take it to practice everyday. We would live in the suburbs so we would just hop on the road for a couple of miles and then you’re out in the woods riding in practice areas and we could ride up walls on the edge of the road or we’d see something cool on the side of the road we’d just haul off and ride it. Anything we could ride over we pretty much rode over – junk cars You could just ride right up and then just ride away you don’t have to load it up in the truck or nothing. JS: Why did you stop riding trials? RC: I was number four in the country and I couldn’t get any help anymore. I just couldn’t make enough – my dad was the importer for the Beta trials bikes and I rode a GasGas for Team USA GasGas and it was the time when everybody was starting to really shrink down the rider support programs and I was on my own for racing; my dad couldn’t support me with the importership stuff anymore so I had to stop. JS: How did you hear about FTR? RC: My friend Clark Myers is a trials rider and used to ride all the Nationals with me. He was a really good trials rider, too. After his first FTR race in the C class, he was like, ‘Oh, man, my dad started me and you have to run to your bike and it’s so crazy and I was riding through these deep whoops and these AA guys were jumping over me and this guy told me sometimes you just have to hit a tree to go faster,’ so when I moved down here I definitely wanted to sign up for FTR . JS: Awesome. You kind of came out of nowhere? RC: Yeah, I rode A Open for a full Hare Scrambles season when I first moved here. I didn’t ride AA until 2013. JS: So, you won the Enduro championship your first full season riding Enduros? WOW! RC: Yeah, it was kind of unexpected. JS: Why? RC: Just because I broke the fifth metacarpal in my hand in practice last year right before the start of the season and so I came off the couch for the Brooksville race and I just showed up and rode and I ended up beating Garrett (Edmisten) by only like a few seconds – him and I had major issues, he missed a check because he couldn’t get his bike started and at the gas stop I had a flat so I had to borrow a flat from one of the Team Wanker guys so I was a few minutes late leaving the gas stop

• I’m his manager: I do all the finances, decision making, finding the best deals/negotiating, filling out contracts, fixing his resume, writing emails to sponsors, the list goes on. It’s a never-ending task! • I make sure he is working out, practicing (but he must be home by dinner time or he gets the wrath of me!). I make sure that he doesn’t spend too much money on making his bike look pretty but rather spend it on things he ACTUALLY needs. Come race day, I make sure that his bike is prepared and that he doesn’t try to start his bike without an air filter (which has happened a few times), that he has all his gear, his protein and that
so him and I were even again and I ended up wining by a few seconds and I didn’t expect that all. It just kind of snowballed from there. I just kept racing and practicing and it just kind of came to me, I guess. JS: Which do you like better? RC: Definitely an Enduro guy. I just, I don’t know. I think I get bored. I have really bad ADHD so I can’t focus for very long, even when I’m talking to you, I’ll skip around and get lost when I’m talking. But I don’t take medication or anything, I just kind of like deal with it. I used to take medication back in the day but no more. I just do my own thing now. I can go fast for short sprints and I can focus for about 8 or 10 miles at time. In Hare Scrambles, I always seem to have something going wrong like at (Gatorback) my bike was broken 5 minutes before the race. During practice my stator broke so I had to borrow one from somebody else and I was running around frantically trying to find it and didn’t have a chance to get into my normal routine of just relaxing before the race. I showed up to the line last second. The Hare Scrambles are just more, you have to go fast for a long time and I can’t focus that long for some reason, I don’t know why. I’m working on it and trying to figure out how I’m going to make it happen. JS: What bike do you ride? RC: Right now I have a KTM 300 XC. JS: Do you think being shorter benefits you in the woods? RC: I don’t know. It helps not being too tall in the woods because you don’t have as much stuff you can smash your head off of or your shoulders but in trials it always seemed like I was too small because I would try to put like a huge dab out to catch myself or balance and it would always seem like it wasn’t enough and I always needed a few more inches but on the enduro bikes, being not super tall is actually better. It’s more comfortable, I think. JS: So you trials guys have your own lingo? RC: Yeah, we got our own whole thing going on. Splatters are when you jump the bike when you’re dead stopped and you just basically jump and splatter the bike into it, just slam the bike into something and you try and jump as high as you can and land on the top or close to the top of something like a big wall. Jap zaps are where you roll up and you give a blip of throttle and you get the front end off the ground, and then you hit the front end on something and you compress the suspension and then when the suspension starts to come back up, you dump the clutch again and it jumps the bike to the rear he doesn’t forget my pillow and blanket (seriously.) • It means sacrificing your own wants for his desire. When I first met Ron I knew that he raced but I didn’t realize what he meant until he got into doing motos. Every day after work I was out there watching him practice, making sure that he was hydrated. We would be out practicing for hours. On the weekends, it was going to his races and watching him do his best. In my eye’s, Ron is already a winner. If he doesn’t win or something doesn’t go right, I remind him that he tried and that he will get it next time. • Moving to Florida away from my family was extremely hard but I did it so that Ron could continue racing and prove himself, which he does at

on 18 Florida Trail Riders Magazinewheel whatever you
hit your front wheel on. We have another one called full leg pressure, which is where you put your front wheel up on something and you just stop and then you kind of lean on the front end a little bit and it forces the suspension to squish down and then you lean way back and you dump the clutch and you jump forward at the same time and it jumps you to the rear wheel on top of something. JS: Wow. Do you do all this stuff in the woods? RC: Sometimes, yeah. In Endurocross, I use it a lot. We do a lot of jap zaps in Endurocross to help you hop over the logs I even did it in the last Hare Scrambles - there were a couple log out there that I would hit the front wheel and jump over them. JS: IT’s probably safe to say you’re the only guy doing Jap Zaps. RC: Yeah. (laughs.) JS: Where’d you get your number, 437? RC: I actually got that from the GNCCs, they just gave me a random number and I liked it. I was 108 and then I was going to sign up for the first Hare Scrambles and Matt Boni was 109 and I was like, ‘Well, I don’t want to be 108 if Matt Boni’s 109.’ JS: That would have been funny! RC: I know. I was debating on going back just because it’s a lower number but whatever. I like 437. It’s just random. JS: Do you have any nicknames? RC: I had a few over the years. Speedy. Crash. Everyone called me Crash for a while especially in motocross because I always crash. If there’s something to crash on, I crash on every single jump on the track. I get Tre sometimes because I’m the third. I haven’t got any wicked cool nicknames like everybody else. I’m waiting for that really cool nickname. Garret’s got, “The Sandman.” I want something cool like that. JS: We’ll have to ask our readers. RC: Yeah. I need a nickname! JS: Speaker of our readers. I received a few questions for you, like Scott Johnson wants to know if you’re a McRib fan? RC: I’ve actually never had the McRib but everyone seems to say it’s pretty good so I’m down to try a McRib but I don’t eat fast food so. JS: That’s what I figured. Ok, next question from Lee Daley: “Most guys with a trials background tend to ride smoothly and with lots of throttle control and finesse.” Why, with your background, are you “WFO bouncing off everything in sight?” RC: I kind of almost go too fast sometimes, like I don’t even know when to slow down, I just pin it. I think I have ridden trials for so long that you use the same things that have been like hammered into your brain like you use your second nature stuff like doing jap zaps and splatters and jumping over valleys and stuff like that. I think I just go as fast as I possibly can and if I hit a tree once in a while, I just try to move it but most of the time they don’t move. JS: Eric Berard wants to know why is there always something wrong with your bike 5 minutes before the start? RC: I think I have the worst luck humanly possible. If there’s something that’s going to go wrong before a race, like anything could possibly go wrong, it happens to me, it seems
like. JS: Your girlfriend Micaela wants to know how you focus on being No. 1 when you’re competing in Endurocross, national enduros, ftr enduros, ftr hares and setra when each have specific techniques? RC: That’s a good question. I’m not really sure. I just kind of play to my strengths as much as I can and try and focus. I know when I’m there, I know pretty much who I’m riding against and what my ability is so I just go as smooth as fast as I can and try not to make too many mistakes. Each race is completely different. You can’t go to an Endurocross and ride like you’re in the woods. You kind of have to have a trials, woods and motocross all mashed into one thing. So each race is a little different. JS: So your ADHD is a benefit? RC: Sometimes. For certain things, like Enduros, it’s pretty good because I know when I start if I have time to think about other things other than what’s immediately happening in front of me then I know I’m not going fast enough. JS: How will you prepare for endurocross in 2015? RC: Next year, I’m riding the whole series for Team SRT Offroad and I’m pretty much just going to do as much training and track time as I can. I was doing a lot of training before this last one but I didn’t get enough track time so I’m going to do a lot more track time before I go to next season. JS: Nice. TF Racing Suspension wants to know your favorite part of the 24-hour race? RC: Usually, I say it’s at night but this last year I had the worst luck in the night time. But the night is so different. JS: Michael Jones wants to know if you like or love bacon? RC: I absolutely love bacon. JS: Kat Tillman wants to know why you race? RC: I think I do it just to kind of push myself and to try and be good at something. I don’t really know. If I didn’t race, I really have no idea what I’d be doing. It’s just a lifestyle. It’s not like you choose to race, you just do.
October 2014 19
JS: What’s your favorite FTR memory so far? RC: That would have to be winning the championship for sure. That’s where I need to get my focus for the Hare Scrambles series. I have to win some Hare Scrambles. I know I can win the Enduros just if I ride smart and do good but those guys are so fast. You’re a completely different person when you’re in a Hare Scrambles and you have those guys to race against. JS: What are you looking forward to next? RC: just looking forward to racing FTR Enduros and Hare Scrambles and really just looking forward to the national Enduros and the Endurocross series. Pretty much everything that has to do with racing, I’m looking forward to it. JS: Awesome. Who would you like to thank? RC: Team SRT Offroad, Kenda, TF Racing, IMS, Fly, Fasst Company, Rekluse, BTO, Acerbis, CTO Goggles, Motorex oil, Scorpion helmets, motoseat, gaerne and Micaela, she’s pretty much the only reason I can do this. She pretty much does anything I need help with, she’ll gas me, pits me, cleans goggles and switches goggles, makes me sandwiches, cooks me dinner, makes sure I don’t spend too much money on stupid things so I can go racing. JS: OK, last question, what’s your advice for young up-and-comers? RC: Ride as much as you can and always keep looking up and don’t stop moving. Look up and don’t ever stop moving because every second you’re not moving or fallen down, it’s a second you’re losing and every second counts. As soon as you hit the ground you have to get back up as soon as you possibly can. If you ever see me crash as soon as I hit the ground I’m back on the bike as soon as possible. People are like I’ve never seen anyone get up so fast when they crash so hard and I’m like I only have one thing on my brain when I hit the ground and that’s getting back on the bike, that’s the only thing I’m thinking. I don’t have pain, I just think about getting back on the bike.”

every race. Sometimes I think I want this more for him then he does! I make sure that he never quits on himself and he knows that it is not easy working and trying to race but when you want something, you do anything you can to make it happen. • Ron always drives to and from races 100 percent of the time (distance doesn’t matter.) Most of the time when we have to drive long distance he will drive home after the race because I have work the following morning so I sleep. Fair? No but yes. I try my best at being the best pit girl for him but we have a lot of support from the FTR community • I am there to remind him to calm down, focus and get his butt back out there and don’t give up!

From floridadirtbike.net: Round 1 is officially in the due to rain and lightning. I was out there when it started books as the FTR Hare Scrambles season kicked off coming down and it reminded me a lot of the “Dade City just outside of Jacksonville. This was the first time in a Twister” two seasons ago. Now, the wind never got that couple seasons that FTR was able to get a race off in bad but it sure did feel good to being hot and sweaty in August and, man, was it hot! Temperatures were in the the 100-degree-heat to being cooled off by some cold triple digits and were up to 115 degrees with the heat rain. I was surprised the track went to mush so quickly index! Luckily for the majority of the weekend there as it was fairly dry at the beginning. The A riders were was at least a little breeze so it could have been much able to get in three solid laps while everyone else was Place First Name Last Name worse. able to get in two. With the distance and weather being PLUS 30 so hot I was surprised to see the amount of riders that 1 Alex Mitz The track received mixed reviews and I personally was showed up, the Sunday 1 p.m. race had 103 riders 2 Chris Sprayberry a little disappointed with it. Last year’s course was one which was more than most of the races last season. 3 Bobby Artman of the better courses of the series and this year it just 4 Clay Lyons lacked the flow it had in 2013. April Bill Salyers:
“I wanted to shout out a thank you to those who helped my son and husband this past race. My son had a great lead for his Junior Quad class but was overcome with his asthma. Several people stopped to check on him, in which he waved everyone off not wanting to hold anyone up from their finish. My husband found him on the side of the trail and was able to assist him but needed to get him additional help back at the truck. A few workers helped the boys with a quick cut through the trails to the truck. I know it’s not a big moment but it was to me when I heard that story when they returned home. My son recovered and all is well. Thank you, Big Scrub Trail Riders! This mom appreciates your immediate attention and quick thinking!”
Jim Eason:
“Great track as always at Gatorback. Thanks to the club and all the volunteers. What a ride!”
Eric Berard:
“Holy lappers, Batman. Great trail BSTR!”
Bobby Henderson:
“693 riders this weekend.”
Greg Melka:
“More fun than I expected! Even with a flat rear the last lap and a half - bummed - had just figured a few of the MX jumps out the lap before.”
Barb Avery:
“It was our son’s first race. He just started riding and felt very comfortable out there. We want to thank the race organizers also for a fabulous well-organized race. Your club could not have been more helpful and it was a wonderful event. Thank you for all your hard work!”

just edging out Navaeh Grzech for second. - continued on page As for the PW Quads, Dylan Terango would take the Super PW Quad A victory followed by a close battle for second between Ryan Cain and Cole Tucker. Sebastian Salgado took home the win in Super PW Quad B with yet another close race happening behind him for second between Patrick Rank and Dylan Doyle with Rank edging out Doyle by just one second. The Quad PW A class victory would go to Mika Lonsdale, who actually placed fourth in Peewee B about an hour before, followed by Austin Bartlett, Talon Hunter, and Adam Rumisek. Lastly, Maddix Cody would win the Quad PW B class followed by Callie Kessler and Avery Collins 12:15 Mini (39 Riders) - With Jesse Ansley moving up to the Junior Class the door was left wide open for the Mini A class championship. Jack Chambers, the new title favorite, was able to take home the first win of the year by almost five minutes! Jonathan Fitzgerald finished second overall and Bobby Munro finished third overall from the Mini B class. - Heartbreak for Julia Cone as she was leading the entire Mini B race and was well on her way to her first Mini B victory when there was a little miscommunication in the pits as to how big her lead was. A more relaxed pit stop by Julia allowed for a hard charging Bobby Munro to close the gap and make the pass. Bobby was moving as he had the second fastest fourth lap out of everybody and ended up finishing third overall. - Logan Stewart was the top C rider finishing up seventh overall. - The top 65 rider was Dennis Riggs from the 65 B class, he finished 15th overall. - The top girl rider was Julia Cone. Julia finished up fifth overall!
Race report from HS #1 continued from floridadirtbike.net
- I have to give huge props to Lexi Cone who finished her first race on the big track! She completed two laps and finished 32nd overall! 2:00 Evo/Junior (74 Riders) - Jesse Ansley would take his winning ways up to the Junior class, he finished three minutes ahead of second overall and almost four minutes ahead of second place in Junior A. Clay Lyons would claim second overall coming from the Pre-Modern line and Jordan Leftwich would finish just behind Lyons for third overall. - Former AA rider Daniel Ingraham was holding down the overall lead up until lap three when he pulled off. - The top B rider would go to Junior B’s Jake Alsup who finished over five minutes ahead of a three-rider-battle for third consisting of Beau Smith, Anthony DePietto, and Jack Langford. Jake would also finish fifth overall. - The local boy Cameron Beebe had an excellent ride finishing up sixth overall from the C class! - Jerry Curtis was the fastest man on an Evo bike as he finished 9th overall. - The top girl rider was Emma Chambers aboard her KTM 105. Emma would finish 19th overall. - I just want to add that Evo B rider Walt DePietto made his comeback race in Maxville. Walt told me before the race that this was a make or break race for him as he was toying with the idea of retiring. Although Walt finished 2 out of 2 and 46th overall he had this to say after his race “I cant quit, I’m addicted even though I suck I just love it.” Quads (77 Riders) Unfortunately with the rain coming down, I didn’t get to really watch the quads so I will just go off of results here: - Cody Ellison grabbed yet another overall and he is starting to become the Garret Edmisten of the quads. With some support and a more reliable quad Cody could very well be mixing it up in the Xc2 ranks in the GNCC series. Quad A riders Domingo Fuentes and Jacob Catterton would finish up second and third overall. - Quad Super Senior rider Brian Green had an excellent ride finishing up sixth overall! Pretty good for a guy who is quite a bit older than the riders who finished around him. - Your new FTR HS referee Dan Aitken finished up eighth overall from the Quad Vet line and Kenneth Brening would finish up right behind Dan from the Quad Senior line. - Kayla Vawter was the top Women’s rider, she finished up 29th overall. Sunday AM (176 Riders) - Scott Palmieri was the Sun AM overall winner, this was Scott’s first race back in over a year! Eric Berard and Craig Wilder rounded out the top three overall. - Robin Frey made his comeback to racing and no better way to do it than to absolutely crush the new Silver Master A class (55+) and finish up fourth overall!
- Deborah Broderick was the top Women rider as she finished up 27th overall! It wasn’t easy however; Ashlee Applewhite put up a strong fight finishing less than a minute behind. - Gates Pelletier would win the Class of 66 but what is even more impressive is that Gates finished in the top 1/4 of the field with a 43rd overall! Way to go, Gates! - The top B rider was Darin Golden finishing up 18th overall. Chad Holman and Brandon Sharff were the next two B riders finishing 24th and 25th overall. - The top C rider was Vet C rider Bryan Riley in 42nd overall. he was closely followed by Daniel Wallace (44th) and Robin Fiore (45th). Sunday p.m. (103 Riders) Well, Garrett Edmisten’s hopes for another undefeated season ended quickly on Sunday. Matt Boni was able to dethrone the eight-time AA champ for a race. I can’t remember the last time Garrett lost to a FTR regular but I know it has been quite awhile. I talked to Garrett after the race and all he told me was how much he hates to lose. Now GE217 was aboard his KX 250 so that is an excuse for people to make on to why he lost, but here is why you can’t buy into that. Garrett finished eighth place at the Mud Muckers GNCC on that thing and it wasn’t even running good. Matt was pumped on his win and he shared a few words with me after the race, “I’m pumped to not only get a KOW win but to also beat Garrett… he is an extremely good rider and has been racing the woods his whole life.” Matt also stated “He is a bad dude and I’ve learned a lot by following him last year, it’s a long series and hopefully we can both make each other work hard to get wins.” - Travis Hullfish and Palmer Lynch both made their returns to racing this weekend and finished up third and fourth overall respectively. - Top amateur was former AA rider Clay Lyons. Clay Lyons was racing the new 30+ class which consisted of five fast dudes. Expect this class to be one of the faster ones this year. Clay finished up fifth overall. - Dylan Rash, Marty Hickey Jr. and Ben Parsons were next in line for top amateur. - Landon Lynn made his A class debut and just missed out on the A 250 win by 30 seconds. - Bryce Koster was the top B rider, he finished 21st overall. Behind him were two B Open rider Fernando Davila and Clark Myers, they finished 25th and 26th overall. - Two girls raced the PM race, Lacey Nordle (B 250) and Alyssa Meisczcenski (C 200). Lacey finished up 10th in B 250 and 54th overall while Alyssa won her class and finished 58th overall. - Charles Mann was the top C rider finishing up in 50th overall. was fortunate enough to be the first person to see each of the helmets! I was stoked! They were really unique and really well done! It was really a treat to be involved with the awards and to be allowed the opportunity to give each winner their new helmets! - Jeremy Powell (not pictured)

urious about the King
of the Woods? Series
chairman Jeremy Powell explains:
HISTORY: The original idea of the series was to crosspollinate racers from our wildly successful Hare Scrambles series with our Enduro series in an attempt to grow the Enduro series. With a nod of gratitude to Ford Snodgrass, Daniel White and the BOD/EC members last year, FTR decided to fund an effort to get the KOW series started with money in surplus from the previous year’s banquet. Since then, I believe it has actually shifted somewhat to become one of the "Series to Race." The Enduros still benefit from the attendance, but the coolest benefit is the number of the elite racers who have come out to contest for the overall wins! WHO AND WHAT: We have 6 classes in the KOW. 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+ and Women and 6 races on the 2014-2015 calendar - 3 Enduros and 3 Hare Scrambles - the best 5 of 6 races count. The next KOW is the Apollo H/S in Samsula on Nov. 22 and 23, 2014. Each stop has unique awards (Beach Blvd Motorsports, the hosting club and other vendors) are giving cash and prizes ($600 purse at each event.) The elites get the cash; the average Joes get the awards. There are 50/50 drawings, T-shirts for the series, and REALLY extravagant End of the Year Awards like last year’s custom painted helmets to each series winner.
FTR STORE: Since this
“How many folks know year’s KOW wil be completely the Green Bay Packers funded by some new, useful and exciting projects, I have ownership structure? The been given the authority and FANS own the Packers. opportunity to start a FTR Everyone seen wearing a Store (online) that will be KOW shirt is very much an stocked with all kinds of cool FTR- and KOW-branded items! owner of the series! Show Expect to see coffee mugs, hats, your pride in ownership!” licence plates, license plate surrounds, mechanic shirts, tie-downs, etc., all with the FTR logo and/or FTR arrow proudly displayed. I decided to do the KOW shirts first as a mechanism to raise money AND to raise awareness of our organization (and the KOW series itself.) WHY: I made a bet on the FTR membership. I bet that my FTR family would support the idea of an FTR store. Order your T-shirt with a suggested $20 donation along the color and size info to jeremypowell88(at)hotmail(dot)com.
