Larry (Frank Lewis) Walls 1936-2013

Walls, Larry (Frank Lewis) passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Saturday evening, August 31, 2013, surrounded by his family at Banner Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona. He was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 19, 1936, to Marie and Bill Walls, who preceded him in death. Larry joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 and served at numerous duty stations throughout the United States. He retired from the Navy in 1977 as a Master Chief Machinery Repairman. During the following several years he owned and managed his own business, Metal Assemblers, Inc. In 1999 he retired from the City of Orlando in Florida. Larry was often referred to as a mechanical wizard - he could build and repair most anything and loved building custom dirt bikes, racing, and various motor sports. He was a member of C.F.T.R. for 30 years. Larry married Rose Anna Madden in August 1957. They parted as friends in 1996. In addition to Rosie, he is survived by their two daughters, Terri Walls Ford (Wayne) of Bradenton, FL, and Diana Walls Kizer (Rob) of Plymouth, FL, and three wonderful grandchildren, Catherine Clifton, Robert Kizer and Natalie Kizer. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Suzette Marie Walls. He is survived by Marge Yanyecic Walls whom he married in October, 1999, in Altamonte Springs, FL, and three step-children, Karin Yanyecic Glascock (Dave) Orlando, FL, Mark Yanyecic Orlando, FL, Stephen Yanyecic (Susan) Colorado Springs, CO, and three step-grandchildren, Rhianna, Bailey, and Jaxson. Frank is the beloved brother of William J. Walls (Lou) of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Jack Walls (Debbie) of Green Valley, AZ, and had two nieces and a nephew Jacob; and two nieces, Megan and Lindsey. In 2005, after 37 years in Florida, he and Marge moved to Globe, AZ. Larry was an active member of the American Legion Post 4 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1407 in Globe, AZ, where he most recently served as Quarter Master and Honor Guard Commander. He was also active in the Globe Senior Center Meals on Wheels program A Memorial service was held on September 4, 2013 in Globe, AZ. An additional Memorial service will be held in Orlando, FL, on October 27, 2013 at 3 p.m. at the VFW in Apopka. Donations may be made in Larry (Frank)’s name to VFW Post 1704, PO

Box 267, Globe, AZ 85502 or to the American Cancer Society

Published in the Orlando Sentinel from September 15 to September 16, 2013 [Editor’s note: Larry wrote most of the rules for the Vintage and Evo classes. He was a beloved member of FTR from the early 70s and always smiling!)

fter taking the win in the Women A class at the first Hare Scrambles of the season, which was originally just supposed to be seat time for the upcoming Croom Enduro, I’m convinced this season (or this bike) is the best one ever. The only regret I have so far is not wearing a GoPro at the Hare Scrambles because I was so nervous and thought, if I wore it, I would be so worried about messing up “in front of everyone” that I would end up crashing my brains out and missing the next enduro two weeks later. So, I went without it, unfortunately, and no one will ever know how I managed to crash only once in the nearly two hour sprint.

and actually raced the Little Brown Jug this year and lived to write about it! If you have any questions for Pit Dog, on the best toothbrush for cleaning your bike or the worst thing to eat during an Enduro, email me and I’ll pass it along!

It means you can go out and have fun without breaking the bank. It means if you put in the work the machine doesn’t matter. Plus, for us at least, being 200+ means we get to thrash some bikes not designed for our size. That is fun as hell. 125s are historically cheap/ worthless in their old age and their size adds to the novelty of the concept.”

Ben has received his AA degree and is now attending Flagler University to study Business Management. He should graduate in May of 2015. This scholarship from FTR has been a huge boost to Ben’s college success. We are two full years into this journey and, thanks to the generosity of the FTR family, all of his books and his laptop computer have been paid for through this scholarship. Speaking for him and our entire family, we cannot thank the generous members of FTR enough.

“It ends up being an exercise showing this sport doesn’t have to be cost prohibitive.

he best part about this issue for me was speaking to 11-yearold Dalton Sargent for the cover story after hearing from his parents on Twitter. I always love hearing from members on Twitter; even better when they post photos from the races!

Dear Florida Trail Riders,

Thanks again, Rocky Gavins

“As much racing as you’ve been doing I’m sure it won’t be that hard. It’s just more fun. Or equalizing. #bravenewworld”

Nic Frey: So for anyone who hasn’t heard, Matt Lyons and I are doing a $1,000 challenge. The rules are you have spend less than $1,000 on a 200 class bike to race in FTR. There rules are all in spirit. 125s preferred. No trophy, just the fun of never rolling back on a throttle and bragging rights of being the best finisher on a clapped out cheap bike. Like a Sunday Evo or Vintage class. You’ll be amazed how much fun you can have on a cheap bike. Mariah Lacy Photo

Wally and Stacey Pixley did a wonderful job at running the track and, even though it was hot, there was a cool breeze throughout most of the day and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and excited about the Florida Trail Riders upcoming season. BITHLO MX ROUND 1 2013-2014

Round 2 of the series was at Bostwick. This was our first ever joint round with another racing organization. For this race, we partnered up with Florida/ Georgia racing and had another good turnout. FTR riders raced in most of the classes. It was nice to be racing with another organization like Florida/ Georgia and having classes with 20 or more riders.

Rick Dreggors Photos

I know the day went long for a lot of folks. My moto was 18 out of 20 so I know what some of you were going through. However, the track owner always likes to groom the track and take an intermission to feed and hydrate his flaggers and other track personnel during the day. Bostwick was a terrific track and the trails were open on Saturday for those who enjoy trail riding. I want to thank Bernie Perrone and his crew at Bostwick for

putting on an excellent race. FTR members who raced Bostwick will notice that your points for our FTR Championship series reflects your position finishing as the top FTR rider in your class. For a complete list of all the finishes, you can go to the Florida/Georgia racing website at FL/GAracing.com. Next up is Round 3 at Mesa Park on November 3. Mesa is always one of our better attended events and everyone loves the facilities and the track. I look forward to seeing everyone there in a few weeks. Thanks for your continued support of the FTR MX series. Rick Dreggors, FTR MX Chair

Enduro Lessons From The Editor

’ve been learning a few things taking myself to the first two in-state Enduros, especially making sure to leave enough time for sign up, gearing up and calming down before the race. Also, for the Enduros, there’s packing the Camelbak and taping the scorecard, along with getting Key Time and don’t forget the Vaseline!

of the trail) and getting passed (mostly when I move over safety at first opportunity).

There’s also the strategy. It’s not hard for me to stop thinking when I race but if by chance I happen to start thinking, of crashing in the mud mostly, then I undoubtedly will make a mistake. However, I have managed to keep it on two wheels most of the time and only dropped a few points more than the leaders!

Another good thing about Enduros: you never know how you’re doing against the others in your class and most people move right over when you come up on the gas behind them. However, this also makes passing lose its excitement.

I also learned not to sit still at the reset and to make sure to be moving around and eating fruit and/or drinking a lot, because it’s just enough time for muscles to cramp and, when taking off again, become slower than ever! Sometimes it seems like as soon as I find my groove again, there’s another check and I have to stop again. Also, when faced with a bottleneck and a handful of riders piled up on the three-foot-wide trail with nowhere else to go, though a few show-offs did try to trail blaze their way around in the thick brush. (I wonder what ever happened to them?) don’t stay put, wondering about the hold up, breathing in two stroke smoke, looking ahead to riders just sitting there, looking back for advice or to see if someone was coming in hot behind them. It’s just boiling in there. Sometimes, in Enduros, you have to forge ahead on your own and take the initiative when others won’t and find the trail walking alongside the bike passing multiple bikes sunk to their seat. The best thing about Enduros: the peace and quiet. It’s just me and my bike as two became one. I ride for a couple of hours over stumps and logs, through mud holes and in-between trees no wider than my handlebars, realizing I still need to cut my bars down a half-inch of so, passing (I still cannot get around people who ride in the middle

I learned the hard way not to forget refilling the Camelbak because the next section will be worse. That leads me to my last lesson I’m still learning about not riding over my head so I won’t lose valuable time picking myself off the ground.

rain is possible, make sure you use anti-fog on your goggles or you will ride 80 miles with none. A tow cable is never a bad idea.

Before: Looks like I’m going to dive into the long distance madness at Lochloosa. I did the warm up last Ryan Turner (#34 Senior B) year as a first race in FTR and it was an eye opener. Extra set of brake pads, grease your wheel bearings So...Other than the normal stuff like hydration and linkage (If have), lube chain. and energy needs, is there anything I need to pay If it’s a mud race those parts will get destroyed attention to on the bike? (250 XC) Moved to master B in Hare Scrambles so that’s the class in Enduro. Will there be a HS warm up like last year or just the Enduro ? # 433 Master B Brad Gustafson (#47 Master A): I don’t change much between HS and Enduro races. I put on an ICO Checkmate (enduro computer) time keeping device but, since this is not a race where you can burn checks, all you need is a watch that you set to 9 a.m. for your row (minute). That way you know when to be at the start and also when your row is about to start at each reset, after the gas reset, etc. As for your preparation, get hydrated and stay that way. I really like Hammer HEED (High Energy Electrolyte Drink) in the Camelbak and also using Endurolytes tablets to keep cramps away. Good luck!

Jeremy Powell (Enduro Chairman) It’s not all that different from a Hare Scrambles race other than you get breaks if you make it to a check-in before you row is due to depart. You bike won’t need to be changed (assuming you run bark busters for H/S). We ride 60+ miles for the “A” classes, but you get several breaks during the ride to eat/drink. At the gas stop (assuming you are on time,) you will have about 30 minutes to fuel up your body and your bike (switch out gloves, goggles, helmet liner). I always give newer riders this advice: Try hard to finish your first couple of enduros. That should be your goal. Ride like you are hoping to complete it (saving your bike and body from the REALLY HARD work of getting unstuck.) Getting stuck and fighting to get out of a hole that you could have avoided is worse than taking a longer line but avoiding a potentially day-ending hole.

John Franklin (Vet A):

Peter Magee (#69 Senior A) Hand guards are a good idea. Hydrate well and put your head down and get ‘er Big tank to go at least 35 miles. Extra spark plug and done. After: David Jay: wrench. Good job to the club; mud Ty Thomas (#66 Master B) was taking prisoners today. “Wide Right” worked all +1 on the Endurolytes capsules. Oh, wait a minute ... day! You enduro guys are pretty ???? tough. And I seen you’re on my line this year ... Never mind, that stuff will two of the biggest turkeys I have ever seen in my life. give you the runs. Pterodactyls, for sure. One of them “roosted” me! She was showing off! Dalton

Editor’s note: I was trolling the @FTRmoto Twitter on deadline for this issue recently and came across a picture that a parent tweeted out of Dalton Sargent spinning sideways out of a corner at the first Hare Scrambles (below). I replied to the post, found out his mother was the photographer, one thing lead to another and I ended up chatting with Dalton, his mother, Summer, and father, Brian, about their experience in FTR and how this 11-year-old has been on the gas since he was 2!

S argent

JS: Hey, Dalton. How was your race this weekend? You took third? Dalton: I was kind of disappointed because I

know I could have done better. It was close but I got caught up in lapped traffic. I was in second place and the kid in third place passed me and the lapped traffic and, by the time he got around, I couldn’t get around to catch up back to him and he was already half a track ahead of me. JS: Was it tight? Dalton: It was open but there was a lot of tight turns. JS: So, this is your first full season in the Quad Super Peewee A class? Dalton: Yes mam. I got bumped up from B to A after my fourth race last season. JS: Well, that’s impressive! Dalton: I was proud of myself because I

that number so we changed it to 111.

JS: When did you start riding? Dalton: I started riding when I was 2. I had a PW50 on training wheels. (Then) I started racing when I was 4.

JS: Cool. And you’re from Lakeland? Where do you go to school? Dalton: Yes mam. Lakeland Highands Middle School.

JS: Wow! What was the first class you entered? Dalton: My first class was 0-15 mini quad. I started in motocross.

JS: What’s your favorite subject? Dalton: Advanced science and computers.

JS: How did you get into trails? Dalton: My friend Corey Blanton, he works with my dad, and he does FTR also and he wanted me to start doing FTR because he thought it was fun and it would make me a better person in racing. JS: Was he right? Do you like FTR? Dalton: It’s a lot more challenging than just an open track because there’s a lot of obstacles that you have to make tight turns and stuff like that. JS: How did you go from the PW50 to a quad? Dalton: I was going so fast on my PW that my mom was like, ‘Brian, I think you need them training wheels off, he’s gonna get hurt,’ so they took them off and it was a short distance and they wanted me to ride that short little distance and I fell and I was like, ‘nope, either four wheels or no wheels.’ JS: That’s a great quote! What kind of quad do you ride? Dalton: It’s a hybrid Yamaha frame with a Honda motor. JS: What about your number, #111? Dalton: My original number was 11; my uncle Mike he gave it to me when I was real little but, when I came to FTR, number 11 wasn’t available and then I went to 1 but I didn’t like

JS: Does the mountain biking help you with riding, you think? Dalton: Yes, very much so. It helps me build up my cardio and my endurance. JS: I definitely agree. So, you’ve been racing for 7 years now. What do you remember the most? Dalton: When we were in Durhamtown Plantation in Georgia, I broke my pelvis in four places. JS: Oh my goodness. Did you go to the

hospital? Dalton: By helicopter.

JS: Wow. How long were you out? Dalton: Four months I was in a wheelchair and all I did was pop wheelies in the wheelchair.

Dalton: I really want to get that jacket and get first place overall.

JS: Is there anyone out there sponsoring you or anyone you want to thank? Dalton: Dirt Road Motorcycles and the owner, Tommy Williams. Fulmer Helmets. And my father, Brian Sargent.

JS: You couldn’t wait to get back on the bike, huh? Dalton: I was mad that I broke it but stuff happens. JS: What about a good memory from racing? Dalton: The first race last season in B class I got second place.

He goes to my races whenever my dad can’t and he points out shortcut without cheating or anything and he helps my dad be my mechanic. JS: What’s one thing he tells you to work on? Dalton: My shifting, my endurance and knowing when to shift coming out of corners. JS: Like being in the right gear? Dalton: Yeah. JS: What’s something you’re looking forward to this year?

- We love FTR out there. All the people are

very family-oriented and if you have an issue or a problem, you can just about ask or talk to anybody and they’re willing to come over and give a hand and do whatever’s needed to get it back on track. And every time we take him out there, he improves on something just a little bit every time he tries to work on something different. - We like FTR so much. I’ve got you guys on Facebook and on Twitter and I just happened to see your stuff on there and y’all hadn’t had any posts and there wasn’t any interactions going, so I figured that being that the first race that we made it to this season that wasn’t rained out, I would send you guys a picture that hopefully you guys would repost up.

Prepare your body with practice and take in food and fluids comparable with an extreme work out. Enduros are so much fun. I’ll still be there.

The other caution for readers is about buying on the internet. There’s only one motorcycle store around here and they set up to rip your head off soon as you walk in. So I’ve been taking my Q: Pitdog, where have you been? Tell us about as chances and buying online. It’s been OK until your race and anything else you want to say? a needed a voltage regulator. Stefan Still: I’m at it again this year, raising money for breast cancer research by putting myself in a tutu.

As the father of three young girls, finding a cure for breast cancer is something very near and dear to me. While the disease itself is very serious, there is nothing that says we can’t have a little fun fighting it. So the gist of it is I’ll wear a pink tutu for the duration (or as long as it stays attached) of Florida Trail Rider’s Hare Scrambles #3 by Azalea City Motorcycle Club. I’d prefer that you make donations using this page since you get the tax credit but I will accept them directly at the race. (http://www.kintera. org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge. asp?ievent=1021963&sup id=368287240)

Just look for a black KTM bearing the red 248c number plate or a guy in a tutu. If you can’t find me, any member of Team Wanker can get you pointed in the right direction.
