I T

’m still recovering from the Croom Enduro, my first time back on a bike in more than a year, and I houred out by three minutes, but more on that next month...I’m thinking of bringing back my article < <<< “Hot Notes.” his month marks my two-year anniversary as Publisher of FTR Magazine, and I’ve never been more proud of the finished product! I especially want to thank everyone who encourages me with positive feedback; it’s nice to know the hours I spend hunched over the computer trying to format scores, photos and ads for the magazine are well received! This issue is packed with results from each series: Motocross, Enduro and Hare Scrambles, and for the first time since taking over the magazine, I was able to cover and photograph all three events. I can’t even begin to explain how impressed I was with the turnout at all of the races so far - I heard the rider count for the first Hare Scrambles topped more than 700! Wow! I guess everyone’s had enough of the long summer. have to give a special “Thank You” to Glenn Gardner of G2PhotosMX.com who showed up at the first Hare Scrambles and captured more than 1,300 photos, which are free to download from his website. If you have not yet met Glenn, he is the guy always rolling around on his pitbike, or hiding out in a corner of the woods somewhere, camera in hand. I’m looking forward to working with him more this season to coordinate photo shoots of deserving riders for the magazine, including this month’s feature of Larry Adams, a Beginner rider who recently stole the show at the Bartow race and took the holeshot on an XR80 - the smallest bike in the class! s always, if you have a story idea or photos to share, please email editor@floridatrailriders.org ’m always looking for interesting tales from the races. SURVEY MONKEY

The following results* were compiled in a web survey of FTR members from August to October regarding the annual awards banquet celebration. *Answers edited for spelling and clarity.

1. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest, please rate your satisfaction with this year’s banquet?

2. Please give one recommendation for next year’s banquet.

Comments: • Cost friendly for most families... • Better food • Free or really cheap so everyone that gets an award would attend. • Someone mentioned near the beach which would be nice. Something a bit less pricey. • Hand the trophies to the riders on stage so that everyone who came to get their trophy has to go up on stage and represent FTR. The more people up 4 1 5 4 3 3.06 17 on stage the more it makes Comments: everyone be involved. Strength • Didn’t go, have gone several years in a row and it’s in numbers, when only 1/3 not worth the $. actually walk across the stage • Expensive, Food Not Good it makes the organization look • The vendor area was not that impressive. Should weak. Maybe some big prize have been more interactive look at my booth at the end of the night to hold settings. The auction items should have been everyone there till the end. I placed when you first walk in. Were the auction think about 10 years ago it items available for ticket sales at the banquet? was a XR50. Maybe those Didn’t hear any announcements? people will accidentally enjoy themselves by not leaving after they got their trophy. Maybe a DJ/MC for in between times. 3. What did you like most about the banquet?

Comments: • Very well organized • Just being with friends • Seeing friends and racing buddies from seasons past. • The level of effort put on by the banquet committee. The vendor area was great! The trophies were great! The T-shirts were spectacular. • Andy did a great job. The people, the families, the FTR FAMILY. The trophies were very nice. HUGE! We love them! • Seeing friends... That’s it. • Vendor area • N/a • the giveaways • Vendor Area and getting to see and talk to people • Vendor area and $2 for beer • Mike Belles photos • N/a

winner could be acknowledged instead of just a name and then the rest announced after. Maybe Peewee riders from 12-1 Enduros from 2-4 and Motocross from 5-7 and Trail Riders from 7-9, etc, etc, and then a party afterward, not at 11. Every one could go to the parts they want to. Have a BBQ/buffet type setting where people can go as they please. More of a trail riders atmosphere instead of a fancy hotel. • At a MX track with a large Pavilion or something similar to host awards • New location • Better location • better, cheaper food and drinks • Maybe Convention style. • Tampa Fairgrounds • You should set up a page for everyone to give their opinions. One comment is not enough. If you want people to think they belong they need to have a place to truly voice their opinions. • Make it free to the members that have put in all the money time and effort all season.

4. What did you like least about the banquet?

Comments: • Cost of accommodations • Price of hotel and quality of food. I don’t mind spending that much on a ticket but at least have some good food. It was good the year that it was done buffet style. • I was called to stage 3 different times and turned away. Then when it really was my turn I wasn’t up there. I never heard them call for my class to staging. • The staging area got a little overwhelmed. • The food-which we forgot about when the first name was called. I understand the food is not what FTR family of today

would have chosen. Length of trophy presentation. Hotel did not have my reservations as made. • Money, takes too long • Took too long was dragged out • That you had to pay just to attend • Hotel, Food • Food, chicken was really dry and getting max charged for everything. • The announcement for Chris Tolken, to donate for him. Not many were paying attention, you really couldn’t hear her. The long drawn out of the trophy presentations. • Food and price

5. Where do you think FTR should hold the banquet next year?

Comments: • Sarasota! Rated #1 beach in the country! • Daytona, on the beach. Lots to do for a reasonable cost if you are staying for the whole weekend. And the rooms would be less expensive. • At a convention center or banquet hall near a motocross track or riding area. So everyone could ride some during the day, then head to banquet and hand out trophies and prizes. Skip dinner but leave enough time before banquet for dinner or make it an option. Take more time to call out the award winners and trophies and let everyone up on stage to collect your trophy. There was only 2 people from my class at banquet this year to collect year end awards including me. That’s bad. When I raced BMX there were awards 10-20 deep in every class. More people would come to get an award and see their friends if they knew more people from their class would be there. How much is one of those plaques? $10? • I would be willing to check in the Cocoa Beach area which is centrally located. • I’d recommend somewhere near the beach. I know a lot of the resorts in St. Pete Beach are hurting for banquet business in the summer months. They will cut some really great deals. They do for my company for all hands meeting. Order of preference, The Postcard Inn, The Tradewinds Resort, The Sirata Beach Resort. • Holding it at a place that we could ride/race (FUN RACE?). • Sun and Fun Resort Sarasota Florida • St. Pete beach or cocoa beach • Hare scramble environment • Sarasota • Tampa Fairgrounds or other such area to lower the cost. Beach would be okay also, anywhere but Disney. Somewhere affordable where more can afford to attend. • Anywhere free and fun

M ike B elle :

The trophies that did not get picked up were made available at the first Hare Scrambles. Many still have not been claimed. If you are interested in getting yours, you will need to contact me before too long. I will not be bringing them all to another race. I may bring the ones specifically requested, but if that does not happen soon, they will be disposed of.

MX #1 reviews from the FTR Forum Jason Sessions: First time at a motocross event. Great fun

and the FTR crew really worked hard and it showed. Looked like a great turnout and the rain stayed away at least until the mid afternoon.

shortened due to lack of time. I would be curios to see what the average number or racers were for the 30 races they put on. While I didn’t race, it appeared like a lot of the races could of been combined to reduce the number of races and save a lot of time.

Something that was strange to me: It was very difficult to Once again my first time out and, man, were some of those understand the schedule. It appeared that the peewee's were kids flyin’. Also pretty cool to see all the H/S guys out there to run their second moto right after the break and then we were showing their skills! told to be at the starting line immediately before the break, leaving the 8 sets of parents running like crazy to make the Thanks again to the FTR Crew that put the event on. race? A little heads up on scheduling would go a long way. Editor’s Note: Jack Sessions finished 2nd in Peewee Oil 4-6 and 5th in Peewee 4-6. It also appeared as I left the second motos were being

Michael Jones: First off, I want to thank all of you guys involved to

make this past weekend happen, Rick, Sean, Bostwick, Champions MX, and everyone else.

For everyone who came out this past weekend, don’t worry these guys will get it all figured out. The main thing that happened this past weekend was the late start. MX practice should be starting around 8 to 8:15 and 1st race starting 9:30 at the latest. But that did not happen and laps had to be cut. It is what it is and that is the only thing that could be done to speed up the race. A few things maybe for next race that has a money class: don’t run the fast classes right before hand. (16-24 was the moto before the money class.) Also a buddy of mine had 3 back-to-back-to-back motos. That should never happen to anyone. Kind of makes the day not so fun. Everyone keep coming out and enjoy a laid back MX race. Racing is always better than sitting at the house not racing. Editor’s Note: Jones finished 1st in Vet B and 2nd in +30.

Shannon Parks: My family had a great

time. The older kids were happy that they got to ride on the big track with the big quads. It was very cool that the kids all got nice trophies, really made their day. Big kids did get cut to 2 laps on their 2nd moto but I figured it was because of the storm coming. Looking forward to getting them to some more!

zEditor’s Note: Jackson Parks (pictured left) finished first in Peewee 7-9 and Quad 4-8.

Bryanne Parks (pictured right) finished first in Girls 9-12 and second in Quad 7-12.

Way to go! See you at Mesa Park for Round #2!

I understand there are growing pains with combining classes and loading the gates; when that is 8 worked out the race day will not be so long and a better experience. My son and I were surprised when FTR passed out gas cards 9 for the 4 hour plus attendees; that was great as we traveled 5 hours to participate. We hope to get some quad participation at the 10 other races though; the numbers were too low. This enduro will take place in early May - finalized details will be announced as we have them. This is your 65 day notice , per SETRA rules. Ian Joubert: I had a great time! The terrain was a pleasant change of pace from the FL sand and flatlands. My conditioning still needs a lot of work. I ran out of energy after the gas stop. Thanks to David Jensen for the tow through the last section. He was the rabbit I needed to chase to get motivated again. David Jensen: No problem Ian, I was surprised it was you and I hollered at you when I went by. You kinda kept me moving as well I kept hearing your bike so that was motivation. I will not say that is the best enduro of all time like so may have said it was and will be but I started on row 72 so that might have something to do with my opinion. It was very y and rooty the last few sections, almost like riding over 2x4’s across the trail the whole time. IF I ever go and do it again I will try to get on an early row. P.S. at the rider’s meeting, the dude said “Don’t race down the gravel roads because there would be AMPLE resets” -

Brian Coughlin: Fun race. Some of the best rail I have ever ridden. Row 3 was nice for dust but that a bit hard to follow the ne virgin trail they had. Not as hard as I thought it would be as I was able to get 2-5 minutes of rest at the check in’s. Would have been nice to have someone at the gas stop saying when row 1 was do as 4 on our row were 5 minutes late to the check in after gas, won’t happen next time. Drive up and back was the hardest part. -

C Bob House: What would have been nice is if they

handing out cold juicy watermellon slices at the gas stop. That would have made me at least 5 minutes late into check 6. There are some key elements I always try to take with me: 1.) When am I due at the known controls 2.) What are the mileages at the known controls 3.) How many miles is each section 4.) A wristwatch with minutes / seconds You can put that on a piece of paper and tape it somewhere for reference. Call it old school, but it’s one of the last elements of an old timey enduro. Trying to figure out how to put this nicely, but someone around row 2 or 3 was holding up lots of riders. When a rider from behind catches you he is clearly faster. Let him by and follow his lines for as long as you can. Holding up riders and forcing them to make race passes in the woods is only going to hurt people. There’s no point to it. When someone catches me I’ll slip off the trail, go around a tree or alternate line then zip right in behind the guy passing me. I don’t lose more than a second doing that. Thank you. Oh, and flipping off a rider that’s yelling, screaming and revving his motor for a half mile...REALLY? I didn’t think you heard that comment about your momma and really sorry about that.

Larry Adams

Larry before Bartow/Facebook photo

Editor’s Note: I’ve known Eddie Adams for a while now since he is the Amsoil rep at the FTR races and advertises in the magazine. However, after running into Eddie at the Bartow Hare Scrambles last month, I learned of his son, Larry, a 14-yearold freshman at Auburndale HIgh School who raced the day prior and took the holeshot in the Beginner class on an XR 80! After hearing that, I immediately tracked down Larry for an interview and, as luck would have it, found two photos of Larry from Bartow (including one of his start: above right) on the G2PhotosMX.com site! Thanks, Glenn!

L JS: Hey, Larry. Congrats on your race last weekend. Tell me about it? LA: At the beginning, I just went because, when I came back from the practice, my dad said, ‘You know, you’re not going to be able to win this race,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I know, I’m just going to try as hard as I can,’ so I went out and when we got to the start I was just waiting for my line to go and just figured I’d try to get the best start I could.

JS: And then what happened? LA: And then, right when I passed the line, I knew that I got the holeshot so I was energized so I wanted to keep going as fast as I could and then I got passed

the first urn and the second turn; I ended up third and then by the time we got into the woods, I was like sixth so they passed me right after because it was wide open. But other than that, through the woods, it was pretty tight so a couple people I passed but not much.

Larry Adams #111 grabbed the holeshot on the smallest bike in the class at the first Hare Scrambles of the 2012-2013 season! all the parts but it’s probably going to be done by the next race. JS: That’s crazy you took the holeshot on an 80. LA: Yeah, my sister was right behind me and she took a video of it and when I take off I look like a little fly in a big swarm of bees coming at me.

JS: So, tell me about the bike you were riding. LA: I was riding my XR 80.

JS: Wow...So I saw on your Facebook where you said you’re the only one in your high school who races? LA: I think so. I mean I’ve talked to so many people but they’ve never told me they race. I think I might be the only one that races.

JS: What about your new bike (1997 Suzuki RM 125)? LA: Right now, we’re trying to put it back together for the race season. We have

JS: What an honor! Tell me about your first dirt bike memory. LA: Well first time I ever rode was actually last

JS: You ended up finishing fourteenth? LA: Yep.

year when we went to the GNCC - that’s what got me and my friends wanting to race - my friend already had his little an XR 80, (we ended up having the exact same bike, same year and everything,) so he let me ride it and my dad was right beside me because he figured I would fall so...He let me get on it and try it and then, by the next race my dad ended up finding me the same one, somehow, on the way to the race, we get to this place and it’s like a ranch and this guys got tractors and cows all over the place and we go back and he’s like, ‘So what are you getting?’ and I’m sitting there thinking what is he talking about and we walk over and I see a dirt bike and he’s like, ‘You like it?’ and I’m like, ‘Uh yeah.’ continued on next page

JS: And that one was yours? LA: Yeah. JS: Now, one year later, you’re already doing awesome for a beginner. Have you been preparing or anything over the summer? LA: Well, my dad’s been trying to get me to go run but I never have time but anytime I get time I’ll go run and I ride my bike all the time me and my friends just ride around just play football.

JS: What is your dad’s role in all of this? LA: He basically does everything for me. Sometimes he works on my dirt bike and helps me with it. If I’m bored, I’ll just go take something apart and put it back together just for no reason. He’s trying to get me into it so I can learn. JS: Is your family into your racing, too? LA: Yeah, my dad’s girlfriend which is basically my step mom comes to every single one that she can. She love it and my real mom that (Bartow) was the first race she been to. JS: Have you taken them to out to the motocross track to watch you, yet? LA: No, I’ve always wanted to but we just haven’t any time yet but I think we’re doing the Motocross season this year. JS: Cool, so I wanted to ask you about something I saw you wrote on your Facebook page. It says, “racing has put me in a place where I don’t care what people think of me.” What’s up with that? LA: Yeah, some people will come up to me and I don’t even know them and they just think it’s stupid and I’m like, ‘I don’t care.’ I don’t know how to say it, but it makes me happy about who I am so when somebody tries to put me down, they just don’t work.

JS: Sounds good to me. Do you have any racing goals for the future? LA: I don’t know. I’m still thinking about that. This year, we

JS: Nice, you already have someone to battle! LA: Yeah, that’s going to be fun.

JS: Wow! That is great. Congratulations! You’re going to be bumped out of Beginner here real soon! LA: Yeah, I tried to race Junior C at Bartow but they said the bike was too small, so.

JS: Cool. Is there anyone you would like to thank, Larry? LA: Just my family and Amsoil for the oil in my bike and for the support at the races.

JS: Next race, right? LA: If the bike is ready. My friend already races in Junior C and we were both in Beginner last year.

JS: Do you get to practice riding? LA: Yeah, I go to my friends all the time and my dad said when we get the new bike we might go to Bartow but on the little bike we always go over to my friend’s house.

JS: I can relate to that. Does your dad ever give you any advice? LA: Probably about every race he gives me advice. Some stuff he say, ‘Just go out and try your hardest.’ At the tougher tracks, he’ll say, ‘Slow down and get used to it before you try and go as hard as you can.’ Basically he just tells me, ‘Just go out, have fun and don’t get hurt.’

went to the River Ranch GNCC and I raced in the Beginner class, or the Trail Rider class, and I actually won it.

JS: Sounds good. Good luck and I’ll see you at the next race! LA: Thank you. §
