True History Facts In 1955, the Montgomery Bus Boycott was started to protest segregation on public transit in Montgomery, Alabama. The boycott was inspired by Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. That bus is now in the Henry Ford museum, where visitors can sit in the same seat as Parks.

THE PETS OF TEDDY THE ROOSEVELT PETS ROOSEVELT
Many of the country’s presidents have had pets during their time in office. While it would be wrong to judge the quality of the president based on their animal companions, that’s exactly what is about to happen. teddy roosevelt had the best pets. Yes, these are their real names.

Sources: The majority of the typeset captions in this book were sourced from Pacemaker United States history. Parsipanny, NJ: Globe Fearon/Pearson Learning Group, 2004. Some of the text has been edited or rearranged for clarity and continuity. The “True History Facts” sections are my own writing. “The Roosevelt Pets” is sourced from The National Parks Service website. Corrections and Notes: “Black Gold” was not, in fact, sponsored by Exxon, though I never did ask them. If you or someone you know is associated with Exxon and would like to sponsor “Black Gold” please see my contact information. This book was partly inspired by Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States.” If you’re looking for a portrait of American history that is more honest and complete than that of your old grade school history textbook, please pick up Zinn’s book and give it a look see. Especially, you, potential Exxon sponsorship partner. Colophon: This book was illustrated by Noah Jodice for the senior capstone project at Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Art and Design in the Spring of 2017. It was printed on Neenah Ultra White 70lb and 80lb paper. It was typeset in Back Issue, an original comic typeface designed by Blambot, as well as Century Schoolbook and Rockwell. Many of the illustrations would not be possible without the photoshop brushes of Kyle Webster. Buy his things! Many thanks go to John Hendrix for his infinite wisdom and joke suggestions, Douglas Dowd for teaching me to declare with pride that I am not just an illustrator, but a “Cartoonist,” my parents Pat and Laura for loving me when I make the same declaration (and at all other points in my life), and Megan Magray for her love and encouragement. Finally, to my studio-mates and my home away from home in the Steinberg attic. Thanks for the margaritas. You can find more of my work at noahjodice.com 47
