The Bus Terminal was a group project designed during the first semester of third year. My partner, Mandy Boccio, and I collaborated to create a space that would solve the problems of the current bus system at the University of Oklahoma. Some of these problems included a lack of proper shading, inadequate gathering space, and poor vehicular circulation. Our design solution included creating an organic form that would provide adequate shelter while also facilitating views of the buses outside as well as the natural beauty of the surrounding area.

The structure for the bus terminal was achieved by stacking vertical and horizontal pieces on top of eachother which creates a “waffling effect�. This allows for sunlight to pass through unobtrusively, providing shade for people in and out of the building.

OKC.Automata was a fourth year project in which our studio was tasked with creating a skyscraper in a part of downtown Oklahoma City known as “Bricktown.” The skyscraper is adjacent to train tracks which also acted as an exterior condition that helped shape the building. OKC.Automata’s form is attributed to a python script that was written within Rhino using a similar logic to a mathematical model known as “cellular automata.” The rules of the script facilitated the creation of multiple iterations and were tweaked constantly to identify the desired final form.

The floorplans for each level of the skyscraper are programmed according to context in all three dimensions. Spaces are clustered into “neighborhoods�, which relate directly to the neighborhoods defined by the python script. Spaces not horizontally connected to each other are accessed using bridges, and some spaces which are vertically related use elevators and stairs to connect their communities and provide egress for fire safety.

The US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was a project done in collaboration with the US State Department in a studio known as “Diplomacy Lab.� The site was given to us on a 14-acre lot in a district designated for international government development. From there, the overall site plan was designed by each student for their own project with restrictions included for setbacks and exterior wall heights regarding the security of the complex. The program of the site and the chancery were given to us by the State Department, while each student was tasked with organizing them in a way that was appropriate for circulation and security.

The concept behind my iteration of the US Embassy was to create public space on the exterior circulation paths of the building while keeping the program on the interior to increase the security and overall efficiency of the building. These public spaces on the second and third floors of the building are lifted up and cantilevered over the exterior space of the first floor to create a shaded circulation path around the embassy and a general outdoor meeting area that is undisturbed by the harsh Saudi Arabian heat.

Channel 405

The design of Channel 405 began with the assembly of a series of axes that were defined by viewing points of interest.

The points of interest were then pinpointed and landings were added to accommodate for them.
Building forms are made that compliment the axes.
Circulation and the inherent views beyond dominate the overall approach of the building.
Channel 405 was an entry for the Cote Top Ten for Students competition in the Fall of 2016. Its emphasis was on the circulation of both people and water. Since water conservation was such a large aspect of the design, the building was to have a butterfly roof with a large channel in the center to intercept water and ultimately lead to a cistern for conservation as it is meant to act as a visual water feature at the end of its axes. Channel 405 houses office spaces, classrooms, and a gallery for private and public use.

One of the most important aspects of Channel 405 was its use of circulation as a form of egress. People who are visiting the building for shelter may enter and leave with ease.

Modular sound was a project aimed at improving the sound quality of the gallery in Gould Hall. Because the gallery is used for multiple purposes, the amount of reverberation experienced in the space is not always appropriate. With a current reverb time of around five seconds, speech can become unintelligible when several students are presenting at the same time.
This project aimed to improve the sound quality by adding baffles above the presentation space that could move and reorient themselves according to the current function of the space. The idea is that the baffles can adjust themselves automatically using a mechanical system when the sound becomes too overwhelming.

Rules Based design

Rules based design is the process of putting a structure together based on restrictions for how individual pieces can attach to each other. Some rules may lead to symmetrical forms, while other rules lead to complex forms. The main benefit behind rules based design is that the builder does not exactly know the outcome of the final structure before building it. Rules can then be tweaked to improve the overall construct, or create a newly unique form.
