PRESIDENT’S REPORT – WAYNE HOMER

It is my pleasure as Nobby’s Beach SLSC President to submit this report for the 2017-18 season. The Club has had another exceptional year serving the community with professionalism and enthusiasm but it is with great pride that we have patrolled Nobby’s Beach for 64 years with no lives lost between the red and yellow flags. Personally, I would like to thank our management committee and their sub committees for their tireless work and dedication to the club, without your efforts and vision, it would be hard for the club to run at such an excellent level. The efforts of our Surf Life Savers led by Club Captain Shaun Hourigan are much appreciated by the club and the committee. The dedication and giving of countless hours on patrol protecting the public is why we are here and you should be proud of your efforts on the beach. A very high standard was maintained throughout the year for all patrols and during the in-house inspection process. To those of you who have completed the many hours, be it radio, first aid, lifesaving or just helping out whatever your role, you again have made huge difference and a significant contribution to our community and of course much of our club’s ability to function is due in large part to the partnerships and relationships we have established and maintained with all our sponsors. Our club could not survive without our major sponsors for support. Each year it becomes harder and harder to raise income for the muchneeded craft and vital surf lifesaving equipment that we need each season to meet our patrolling obligations and to keep operating in pursuit of our Objects and the objects of the Surf Life Saving Association. Thanks to our major sponsors and supporters; Professionals John Henderson Real Estate, Lindores Personnel, Allenview Turf, Kennards Hire, Nobby’s SLSC “Old Boys”, Councillor Pauline Young, Ray Stevens MP, Council of the City of Gold Coast, SLSQ South Coast Branch, Ipswich Brothers, Subaru, The Scott Family, Assured Management, Davoren Associates, Schoolies.com, Grants from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Fund – Qld Gov, Beach Safety Equipment Fund – SLSA, Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Also, a massive thanks to Darren and Sue-Anne Sessarago for all their efforts over many years in organising and running the Golf Day and Race day which continue to raise much needed operating funds for our club. The Club’s competition team has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of our coaches Nicholas Marshall, Daniel Homer, Murdoch Finch and Surf Sports Director John Buckley. Congratulations to all our competitors who participated in carnivals during the season. It was great to see the Nobby’s cap lining up to complete at carnivals. Special thanks to John Buckley for committing his time to organising training programs throughout the year and Ian Murphy for getting the teams together. Unfortunately, the participation of our Youth and Cadets was not as strong as seasons gone by, but with a recruitment program in place the club intends to have a stronger personnel base for seasons to come in these age groups. Well done to Paula and our Youth/ Cadets for continuing to back up each week. Our Junior Activities area has had another great season. Thank you to our Junior Activities Officer Grant Mills and his hard-working committee, age managers, water safety and parents who all ensured that our nipper program continues to shine with our Sunday activities. Participation this season in the nipper program shapes as a tremendous nursery for our future for our patrolling ranks. It was unfortunate nasty weather hindered our season for nippers as well as the Albatross Nippers. Well done once again to Nicholas Marshall for his involvement and commitment towards Albatross Nippers Inc. A special thank you to the Council of the City of Gold Coast for organising and supplying the beach wheel chair and beach matting to improve wheelchair access to the beach for all who visit. A big thank you to our dedicated administration team Sue-Anne Sessarago and Belinda Doman for making sure the daily, weekly and monthly items are in order for the club to progress successfully, also a big thank you to Bruce Serisier (treasurer) and Daniel Homer (secretary) for sharing their spare time towards improving many aspects of the club behind the scenes. It is very comforting to know we have a great admin team. On closing a big heartfelt thank you to our members, a very, very warm sincere thank you.

TREASURER’S REPORT – BRUCE SERISIER

I’d like to thank all the members involved in raising funds for the Surf Life Saving Club to allow us to provide a safe and well managed beach at Nobby’s. Fundraising has included donations, raffles, barbeques (Nipper & Bunnings), and the golf day fundraiser. This event alone was again organised by the Sessarago family and netted close to $17,000 for the club. Thank you also to our major sponsor Professionals John Henderson Real Estate who donated $25,000 and the Old Boys who donated approx. $10,000 in cash and in-kind equipment. I encourage all members to continue with their fundraising efforts, and if you have any ideas for other fundraising events or revenue streams please discuss with the Surf Life Saving Club management committee. However, it has been another challenging year financially for the Surf Life Saving Club. The club is not in a financially strong position; it hasn’t been for a long time. 1. 2.

4.

5. 6.

It costs in excess of $400,000 per year for us to operate the Surf Life Saving Club. The club building needs repairs and the club has no cash reserves to maintain or improve the club facilities. This is something that the current committee has been working to address over the past season to ensure future sustainability. The club has a loan which was increased by $150,000 last year (to $1,150,000) so the Supporter’s Club could pay creditors. Further, the loan repayments were historically interest only, however from this season (November 2017), the bank is now requiring principal and interest repayments which totalled $94,076 for the year. The Supporter’s Club contribution to the club has increased to $108,000 this year to assist in meeting the bank loan repayments. However, of the $108,000 we receive from the Supporter’s club, after repaying the bank loan, we only have $13,924 to spend on the club. The bank has advised they would not lend us any more money until we create new reliable revenue sources. During the season the Surf Life Saving Club management committee investigated new and independent sources of revenue: - An agreement with Mermaid Nobby’s Miami (MNM) board riders for $1,200 per annum to rent a space in the club building was affected March 2018. This was negotiated by council and is more of a community partnership than an income stream, how. - A proposal for licensing a coffee nook (9m2 - where the old uniform shop was) to bring in more than $23,000 per year was positively received by Council. Council approval required support from our Supporter’s club. Unfortunately, the Supporter’s Club saw this as a conflict to their coffee business and proposal didn’t progress.

A sub-committee/working group has been set up to investigate independent sources of income and make recommendations to the management committee. I would like to express my sincere thanks to our club administration staff Sue-Anne Sessarago and Belinda Doman, thank you for your efforts above and beyond. I look forward to working as one club with the Supporter’s Club and the working group as we investigate other sources of revenue for the Surf Life Saving Club.

SECRETARY’S REPORT – DANIEL HOMER

The 2017/2018 season has been interesting one at Nobby’s Beach SLSC and as a preface to this report, I’d encourage you to take a couple of minutes to reflect on your season at the club; the trials and tribulations, triumphs and failures, what you did well and what you could have done better. Reflection is something we all often forget to do. We get caught up in the moment, worried about the future and seemingly concentrate and are concerned about everyone and everything around us, forgetting to take the time to reflect and self-evaluate. A primary goal of many personnel of the club committee this season has been to establish, reinforce and progress various components of the surf lifesaving club operation which could be colloquially classified as the “health of the club” and in particular, those in relation to governance and structural processes. Developing these elements will allow the club to operate more efficiency, remain compliant and ultimately become a more effective not-for-profit organisation into the future. As has seemingly been and continues to be case over the time span since the turn of the millennium, the financial limitations we face continue to surmount, often inhibiting us from ‘just getting there’ and being able to completely capitalise on the many resources we already have within the club. The surf lifesaving club should be congratulated again for making the best of what we can and thinking outside of the box in an attempt to reduce these limitations. From an administration perspective, engrained within the club’s internal procedural occurrences for many years, meetings of the management committee have been conducted with less than optimal efficiency, adversely affecting members’ motivations and propagating through the many functional areas of the club. This season, we have strived to increase the efficiency of these meetings through POSITION NAME HELD ATT APO ABS the use of agile methodologies and a restructuring of President Wayne Homer 13 13 0 0 the meeting ‘procedural flow’. This has resulted in an Darren improved meeting runtime with the same amount of Deputy President 13 12 1 0 Sessarago relevant discussion taking place. Although there are Treasurer Bruce Serisier 13 11 1 1 still many opportunities to improvement, this is a Secretary Daniel Homer 13 13 0 0 Club Captain Shaun Hourigan 13 9 4 0 good start. It was also great to see many younger Junior Activities Grant Mills 13 9 4 0 members stepping into office bearing roles and in Surf Sports John Buckley 13 8 5 0 doing so bringing a fresh take on how the club is run. We Club Committee Meeting Attendance 17/18 have also formalised our relationship with the Nobby’s Beach SLSC Old Boys Association as well as establishing and strengthening partnerships with similarly aligned community groups such as Brother’s Leagues Club, MNM Boardriders Club and Albatross Nippers Inc. allowing the Club to establish a greater presence in the community. Although we are on a progressive path across a variety of areas, many opportunities still exist in addressing our weaknesses and moving forward in a positive direction as a compliant charitable entity.

Such opportunities exist for all members of the club – from the position of the President right to down to an under 6 Nipper. The formalisation of a “business like”, 21st century corporate governance style would be of significant benefit to the club into the future with more emphasis on subcommittees (or departments) meeting regularly and bringing their functional department ‘day-to-day’ recommendations to a central Board who is focused on the overall club and its strategic direction in pursuit of SLS2020. Opportunities also exist within our member base, and the importance that all members contribute their part to a harmonious club environment, putting differences and opinions aside in order to collectively meet and exceed our purpose and objects; not as individuals or with concern only for our own interests, but for the club as a whole. Although seemingly benign at first glance, the culture of the club (and large numbers of community clubs) has room for significant improvement. By no means is it an immediate threat to our operation; but we aren’t perfect and in this day and age, community clubs and not-for-profits are professional and need to operate as such. for others should be paramount at all times, in essence boiling down to the age-old principle of think before you speak/act. Often it is the little things, the things which we don’t realise we do; that have the biggest impact – both positively and negatively. As our founding member Phil Roubin advocated many years ago, Respect for our peers, the club itself and the Surf Life Saving movement should be upheld in the highest regard at all times. Culture change is not something that happens overnight and requires a prolonged effort and ‘buy in’ by all. This is another opportunity that has enormous potential to influence the overall “health” of a surf club. We are a club of volunteers, led by volunteers who are voted in by volunteers, operating in the interest of the public. We need you. But we need to be working together towards a common goal. Human nature inherently brings differences of opinion and view, however simply highlighting issues without offering assistance in addressing them with practical solutions (within the structures and processes inherited from our governing bodies), only defers those trying to address them, from attempting to do so. Further, it is only logical that as members, our contributions to the holistic model capitalises on our own particular expertise as individuals, rather than getting bogged down with what everyone else is doing. As a member of this Club since a nipper on a foamie, my first experience in an executive office bearing role has provided a great deal of insight into the many components which constitute the holistic ‘whole of Club’ operation, which many members may not have yet experienced or realised, regardless of the time spent at Nobby’s Beach SLSC. The position has also shone a light on the enormous amount of work that goes into the operation of a surf lifesaving club both on the beach and in the public eye, as well as behind the scenes. Having witnessed firsthand the time put in, and the effect that additional stresses have on people (often to simply attempt to maintain club stability), it can be inferred that the current model is unsustainable. It would be wise for a significant rethink of the club’s governance structures in the current operating climate. As the saying goes, the club’s strategy and operational elements would be worth “breaking into smaller and more manageable sized bits”. There are many ways to address this, from simply redefining role boundaries so that one role can be done exceptionally well, rather than many roles done ‘alright’; to employing professional and qualified staff to assist with the day to day management functions of the club. With vast competition and comparison with other clubs, and the subsequent pressures resultant from the greater public’s perception of how surf clubs operate; in order for our club ‘to still have a seat at the table’ (with the consideration for the welfare of our membership base), I feel a serious look at our overall club function, identity and brand should be on the table. In closing, my ‘thankyous’ are much the same as those of everyone else in this report, but a special thank you has to go to Belinda and Sue-Anne in Administration for the positive guidance and invaluable knowledge across all aspects of the Club throughout the season. Having little to do with the administration side of the Club up until this season, seeing the amount of work that they do to ensure the continual operation of the club has been a real eye opener. So, if you see them around - just say thanks! Even though it might not be for anything specific at the time, a simple thank you can really make you feel like your job is worth it. Because without them, the club would not function as effectively as it does, and many things would be significantly more difficult or flat out would not occur at all (this annual report being one of them). Cheers for the season.

This beach access equipment was donated to our club by the City of Gold Coast as part of their beach access program, to make beaches more accessible for everyone.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT – SHAUN HOURIGAN

This year we started with 9 groups, over 180 patrolling members and did 8,873 patrolling hours. Most importantly we had no death on our beach during patrolling hours. The patrols made 21 recues, did over 1647 preventative actions and many first aid actions, some on our own members. We also had over 30,000 visitors to our beach during the season. This are great results for our club. We continue to focus on preventing swimmers getting into trouble rather than rescuing them after they are in trouble. I would like to thank all patrol captains for their work in keeping their patrols on the beach during the season which had a number of varying conditions. Without their support during the season we would have not been able to accomplish the results we did. There were several incidents during the season where our members performed to high standards however there is 1 incident that I would like to note and give a special mention to some of our patrolling members. This was a rescue of several interstate visitors from Tasmania. Matt Jedra and Brian Watt were on patrol when several school students on a school camp from Tasmania came to the beach and entered the water. It was obvious that they were not used to swimming in our conditions. Matt swam out the back and Brian kept close watch in shore. Over the next hour both Brian and Matt rescue several swimmers and ensure the rest were well supervised Special mention goes to the members who help out during the Commonwealth games. We had several volunteers working from chauffers to ushers. I have also been advised that Dru Burge is a very competent dancer. Again, we hosted the Young Guns carnival. Unfortunately, due to the conditions it was moved from our beach to Bilinga on the morning of the first day. With little notice our troops grab all essential items and headed for Bilinga where we set up in record time and again managed to show what we could do. Well done all but especially the organisation skill of Edwina Roberts and her team. I would like to thank the efforts of Pauline Cook and Peter Gabbert for training the bronze 24 new bronzes and 14 new SRC’s. Without their efforts in ensuring we have a constant supply of well-trained patrolling members we would not be able to maintain the high standards we have set over the last few seasons. These 2 take considerable time out of their busy lives to ensure every patrolling member on our beach can perform to a high standard. Also, we ran our own IRB drivers and crewie course which was headed by Neil Martin and resulted in 6 more drivers and 5 more crewies for our club. Lastly but far from least, I would like to thank all our patrolling members and water safety personal for their support and performance throughout the year. To give up your own time and at times put your own life in danger to protect other members of the public shows the true spirit of our club. Simply put without you Nobby Beach Surf Lifesaving Club would not exist. CHIEF TRAINING OFFICER REPORT – PETER GABBERT

2017 – 2018 has been another great season for Nobby’s patrolling members. As usual the Bronze Courses have been a lot of fun and this is something that Pauline and I look forward to every season. We want to congratulate the new members, age managers, mums & dads who all received their Bronze and SRC Awards this season, congratulations, you are all fantastic. While some candidates surprised themselves on what they could achieve, you are all capable of becoming outstanding Patrol members and Captains. Those members who choose to complete their First Aid and Observers awards to help on patrols, has been invaluable and you are all part of what makes a great patrol team. This season Nobby’s members have achieved a high number of awards and now that we have 4 IRB trainers, they trained 2 IRB crew courses and our first IRB driver’s course for a number of years. Throughout this busy season, Nobby’s SLSC provides all its members with numerous opportunities to gain awards. The following table shows the courses offered and the number of candidates that successfully completed each course at Nobby’s or external clubs. Courses – Nobby’s

We also held 3 Bronze and SRC Proficiencies, 3 IRB Proficiencies, TAF Proficiencies and pool swims. All up Nobby’s members participated in 451 award proficiencies this 2017 – 2018 season. This is a fantastic effort by our Nobby’s members. I would like to give a very special thank you to (Councillor) Pauline Cook who I consider the best trainer on the coast. Pauline’s help is invaluable. She has a very good understanding in all aspects of training, speaking to a class of candidates, keeping them interested and in line. I could not do this job without her help. I want to thank our IRB training officers Neil Martin, Shaun Hourigan, Brendan Scoffell and Emily Sprake. Our volunteer trainers Tracey Mitchell and Owen Smith who don’t hold this award but still come to each course to help train our members. The assistance we have received from you all make our jobs that much easier. There are also the members who volunteer their time to assist with board training, water safety and IRB each week. Without them we would not be able to put candidates in the water. Also, I would like to give a huge Thankyou to Belinda, her knowledge and experience of how SLSQ operate, communication, phone calls, paperwork and assisting members to enrol in courses. Collaborating with Branch to finalise paperwork is a huge job, her help is tremendous. As assessors Pauline and I have visited many different clubs across the branch and attend “Board of Lifesaving” committee meetings, this has allowed us to compare ourselves to other clubs and keep up with new training information. I am confident that we are exceeding all benchmarks the SLSQ require. We will continue to purchase new training equipment which can only lift our current training to a higher level. As the late Greg Mitchell would say to me “we might not have a club of champion competitors, but we do have a club of Champion Lifesavers”.

SURF SPORTS OFFICER REPORT – JOHN BUCKLEY

With the season behind us I can reflect and enjoy the progress we’ve made in the surf sports arena. Because of the ongoing commitment of our coaches and athletes, team Nobby’s has record results at States and several other carnivals. Some great friendships have also been forged during these training sessions which was obvious at the carnivals with sideline support for all competitors. The development of the surf sports area of the club has continued to progress in a positive direction. After initially taking on the role last season, a number of opportunities were identified to further develop the club’s surf sports strategy into the future after losing a number of talented competitors to other clubs in the season prior. Key Strategic Intents include: 1. Increase participation and development opportunities club wide within surf sports 2. Provide opportunities across a range of disciplines 3. Increase proficiency of participants

4. Provide high quality coaching, resources and support 5. Encourage and recognise surf sport competition and results 6. Improve engagement with members and the public

These intents and the overall strategic direction for the surf sports arm of the club is expected to be formalised over the winter months and throughout the 2018/2019 season. A goal of the club’s surf sports development was to introduce beach training, and Murdoch, our beach coach, has been a huge asset. Our youth development camps sadly never eventuated, with so much preparation required in the organisation of such a trip, it just got away from us, but we will try again next season. The surf sports committee has put together a surf ski program that is planned to kick off during the winter months. We plan to have a selection of six second hand skis and paddles available; one being an adjustable double ski and with the introduction of Matt Roser as surf ski coach, I am looking forward to seeing some skis on the starting line next season. This initiative alone should give the club the opportunity to further progress our overall performance, especially considering our masters finished 6th overall at the state championships without involvement in single ski, double ski, taplin relay or ski relay events in any age category. My plan to kick off a strength (weights) program once a week last winter sadly did not eventuate either, but it is definitely on the cards this winter. We are just finalising an area to store weights as this goes to print, so keep your eye on the surf sports page. We look forward to our surf boat hitting the water during the winter months, generating interest with the plan to one day have a Nobby's surf boat on the starting line. Last but not least, plans are underway to kick off a Nobby's IRB team in the future. Overall, the club’s surf sports participation has been steady. Master’s in recent years have steadily increased, providing a group of mentors for younger members to look up to. The increase in our Masters competitors also has the bonus of filtering through to junior activities members (as many are nipper parents). We hope to see this strategy begin to continue to improve the junior activities surf sports base in the years to come. We would love to encourage parents of our Nippers to come and train with the kids. We know from experience that it's not just encouraging kids to continue with their fitness but a great way for a family to have fun together. Thank you for all of the support I got throughout the season. I look forward to lifting our professionalism in the surf sports arena even further next season. Commitment is the foundation of great accomplishments

HEAD COACH REPORT - NICHOLAS MARSHALL

This season saw a different approach taken by the Coaching team to better target the entire club rather than just to focus on the Nippers. By providing a program that catered equally to the Masters as well as the Nippers we were able to see greater numbers and a greater community and family engagement at both training and carnival times. Another important addition to the coaching this season and something that is quite unique for a small club like ours was the addition of Murdoch Finch our beach coach. Murdoch’s sessions were well represented by both nipper and master’s athletes and this was really demonstrated with an increase in participation numbers and overall points at both the Youth South Coast Branch Titles and also the Queensland State Masters Championships. Between Dan Homer (assistant coach), Murdoch and I, all age groups and all facets of Surf Life Saving competition were covered. This season saw the club have an available club training session (whether that be development, beach or surf session) available on every day of the week except for Sundays, so we could free up time for Sunday Nippers. This change was a new precedent for the club and allowed our members to train and gather with the club daily. There were some exceptional results and performances throughout the season from all age groups across the club at all levels. But what pleased me the most was to see our clubs Masters finish in the Top 10 overall point score at Queensland State Titles. These masters are our clubs age group leaders, committee members, patrolling groups and our Mums and Dads and they showed the value of hard work, commitment as well as how much fun club life can be. The 2018-19 season looks to be another big season with exciting new additions in the planning stages now. It has again been a pleasure coaching the group and the club. See you all on the beach soon.

TEAM MANAGERS REPORT – IAN MURPHY (SENIORS/ MASTERS)

If the 2016/17 season was the beginning of history making results, Nobby’s continued this season with an incredible improvement at the recent masters state championships held at Maroochydore. Team Nobby’s has performed well again starting with the formidable results from our U15 members to our masters, although there is definite room for improvement from our U17 and Open members to represent the club. Nobby’s should appreciate the effort and dedication of our popular and competent coaches in Nick Marshall and Dan Homer with our water competitors and this season our beach coach Murdoch Finch. The club recognises and sincerity thanks our coaches for their time and effort. For the second year in a row, the South Coast Branch senior and master’s championships unfortunately had to be cancelled due to dangerous surf conditions which meant our first carnival of the season was to be the state titles. At the state championships held at Mooloolaba/ Maroochydore mid-March, Nobby’s had three senior members represent the club admirably and with some very impressive results. With an incredible 10 points Nobby’s seniors came 20th place in the overall points tally from the following results: -

Jack Adams – Gold – Open 2km Beach Run Harley Adams – Bronze – U17 2km Beach Run Phoebe Macklin – Competed U17 Beach Flags

While from our 29 enthusiastic masters at state, Nobby’s amassed an unbelievable 192 points in the overall point’s tally, which placed us 6th place behind Alexander Headlands, Mooloolaba, North Burleigh, Northcliffe and Kurrawa and 6th place in the handicap points tally. This is a 47-point improvement on last season. State was conducted at Mooloolaba and Maroochydore, due to high tides and uncertain seas. Congratulations to all our Nobby’s Masters competitors as every member has contributed and gained valuable points for the club. Results of our 28 medallists: Gold -

230 Men’s Beach Relay – John Buckley, Bruce Serisier, Shaun Roberts, Ian Murphy 55-59 Women’s Beach Sprint – Tracey Mitchell 55-59 Women’s Beach Flags – Tracey Mitchell 50-54 Women’s 2km Beach Run – Edwina Roberts 40-44 Women Beach Sprint – Selena Tranter 35-39 Men’s Beach Flags – Luke Bradley 30-39 Men’s Beach Sprint – Daniel Buckley

Along with eleven- 4ths, seven 5ths and five 6th places in Finals, Nobby’s master’s has once again set a huge precedent for next season and a goal to gain 200 points at the 2018/19 State Titles. As the Australian Titles are to be held at Scarborough, Perth, unfortunately due to cost, timelines and the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, No Nobby’s competitors decided to attend – hopefully next season when it is closer to home. As team manager, I would like to acknowledge and thank the following proud and dedicated members, who without their support and help our competitors would not have been able to enjoy the competitive aspect of the club – Alex Walker and Wayne Homer our reliable officials; Shaun Hourigan, Owen Smith, Brenden Scoffell and Emily Burgess who manned the IRB’s water safety at State; Fiona McLarty for her expertise in entering our members in state; Liam Sessarago, Michael Sullivan and Paul Keighley for performing our rostered First Aid duties over the three days of state; Edwina Roberts for her enthusiastic photographing of our members ad preparation and help with paperwork/timetables for the team. Lastly thanks must go to Belinda Doman and Sue-Anne Sessarago our efficient office staff, John Buckley our Surf Sports Director, Bruce Serisier for all the help during the season and to our sponsors especially our “Nobby’s Old Boys”. Without a doubt, Nobby’s showed the greatest support for all our competitors and this therefore made for a most memorable, rewarding and sociable state championships. Finally, a couple of recommendations for next season: -

To foster competitions that entail team and discipline that are not largely participated in at carnivals: March Past, First Aid and R&R Events early in the season. Support and encourage more U15, U17, U19 and Senior (Open) members to achieve their full potential at club and state level For Masters to consider competing at the annual Brunswick Master’s Carnival

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES OFFICER REPORT – GRANT MILLS

The 2017/2018 Nipper season has focused on the fundamentals of lifesaving and in particular the focus of the Nobby’s Beach Nipper program being Family, Fun and Friendship. The Junior Activities Committee met prior to the season commencing to discuss the Nipper direction and we all agreed that we needed to be constitutional and not emotive, look forward and not back, focus on the positives and not the negatives and celebrate the successes and not dwell on the failures. This season the nipper community has increased by 16% to 260 Nippers and families. We have had 260 nippers participate in beach and surf awareness programs under the guidance of Age Mangers and Water Safety. Recognition via many SLSQ awards have been presented with medallions and trophies for outstanding achievements. We had 66 nippers competing at Gold Coast carnivals and 30 nippers attended the prestigious Qld State Titles at Alexandra Headland Sunshine Coast. Nobby’s have seen an injection of our young nippers and their parents in the Under 6s and 7s age groups. It is imperative for these families to continue to get involved in the nipper program. Let’s face it, spending a morning on the beach and in the surf with your kids isn’t a bad way to spend a Sunday. Parents please consider completing one of the many SLSQ qualifications such as Bronze, Water Safety, Officials Course, First Aid or Age Manager Course next season. The Under 8s, 9s and 10s age groups are developing great surf and beach skills. There has been amazing improvement in each and every nipper this season and we look forward to what lies ahead with these nippers. Our big kids being the Under 11s, 12s, 13s and 14s are forging forward in their lifesaving skills learning the importance of group bonding, team building again with the guidance of Age Managers, Water Safety and Senior Patrolling Members. They have also grown over the years as a competitive team and have had some outstanding results at carnivals with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, proudly wearing the Nobby’s Cap. We look forward to seeing your lifesaving skills continue to develop and can rest assured our beaches are in good hands. It would be remiss of me in this report not to mention the tireless efforts of the JA Committee, Water Safety and Age Managers. The hours and hours of work completed each and every week is enormous and always done with a ‘how can I help’ approach. The Junior Activities Committee welcome parents and volunteers to join us in creating a Family orientated and Fun nipper program. The Friendships made will last a lifetime. In lifesaving we play to our strengths and together our strengths forge a great team.

ALBATROSS NIPPERS REPORT – NICHOLAS MARSHALL

The Albatross Program again expanded in season 2017-18 with 5 separate weekends available to run the program within the Nobby’s Sunday Nippers. This expansion saw the list of Albatross nippers (nippers with special needs) expand from 35 to 75 special needs children, who along with their families accessed Nobby’s Surf Club and its facilities. Further to this the program’s fund raising, sponsorship and grants saw the purchase of a beach wheel and 4 soft rescue boards to be used within the program but available for surf club use at all other stages throughout the season. As well as attracting new families and their special needs children to the club, the program saw large groups of young competitors from other Surf clubs head to Nobby’s to volunteer and assist in the running of the program and become a part of the Nobby’s family and culture. But further to that it drew a spotlight on our great club and the fantastic people within it. The Albatross Nippers proudly calls Nobby’s Surf club its Home and is excited about the future season 2018-19. There are exciting times ahead for the Albatross program and this will well and truly shine a bright spotlight on the club and the great things we are doing as a group and community.

CADET/ YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OFFICER REPORT – PAULA BAKER

I unexpectedly took over the Youth Development Officer role as the season was kicking off. This has been a very challenging position. To be honest having children youth aged and being at the club for many years I was surprised to find such a role existed in our club and was pleasantly surprised as to what is available to the Youth. This season we arranged with the help of Murph (Ian Murphy), a couple of early morning, fun activity mornings prior to the youth members performing water safety duties for the nippers. We ran an all-day Christmas wrapping station at Harbour Town shopping centre involving Youth and their parents that had not had prior opportunity to be involved in Youth activities within our club. We all had a very enjoyable, laughter filled day whilst raising money for Nobby’s. I tried to organize other Youth activities, but communication seems to be a problem. I would send out anywhere between 50 to 80 emails or SMS and maybe get one response (Thanks Helen Ewart). When I was sending emails and SMS’s for the Youth Ball with no response, I sat down one weekend and rang every single youth member. We had 9 Youth Members and Emily Sprake (chaperone) attend the Youth Ball. From all accounts a lot of fun was had by all. I have also secured a further fundraising opportunity for Nobby’s to run the 50-50 raffle at the Titans v Storm NRL game in August. Dan (Daniel Homer) and I are meeting with SLSQ this week to discuss implementing YIPS (Youth Involvement Program) at Nobby’s, I am hoping that this will encourage more youth to be actively involved in Nobby’s, both in competitive and non-competitive activities. I am also hoping that we can put in place a Youth committee driven by the Youth members, to provide the Youth a voice in the direction of youth activities and input into the club as a whole. I would like to thank the committee for the opportunity and their continued support, I would also like to thank Belinda and Sue-Anne in the office and thank the Nobby’s youth members and their families and look forward to the coming seasons.

GEAR & EQUIPMENT REPORT – NEIL MARTIN

Hi Team, we are done for Patrols for the 2017 and 2018 season. Even though we have parked up the gear for the winter the maintenance process just starts. The aging on the gear is a never-ending battle. The elements have again taken toll on the tractor and ATV. Especially the ATV has suffered greatly during the season, but we can only do what we do as to slow the down the beach termites. The tractor, as experienced this season, will continue to have minor issues year on year. The starter motor needed replacing due to minor electrical faults. We know the guards will need replacing at some stage soon, due to corrosion and the electronics will need major attention. Both of which are not of high expense and will fit with our year on year maintenance budget. We will keep the tractor towing our gear for at 15 more years. However, the ATV is a much different story, and with the ongoing study of patrol efficiency we are looking into an ATV upgrade for 2018/2019 season. Our Polaris ATV RANGER 500 series has been a great machine 4 plus seasons. But a key weakness is our machine is only a 2-seater. From recent observations it has been a requirement to carry an additional person in comfort and safety. It is a common occurrence to have a patient and 2 patrol members seated. Other clubs have got 3 seaters for this purpose. We are seeking to trade our POLARIS RANGER 500 before it deteriorates much more and upgrade to the POLARIS RANGER XP 900EPS series. Along with the approved 3 seating capacity it has power steering and increased ground clearance. The power is double at 68Kw which when the situation calls it can tow all the gear off the beach in an emergency or if the tractor is out of action. Speed wise it can be governed with controlled keys and like all later models seat belt interlocks to limit to max of 20K/hr. The proposed ATV, although 3 seats is only slightly wider and longer but will still fit into the parking space. However, the increased ground clearance the overall height does go up, so board racks on top and board storage is not be possible. Therefore, if this goes ahead we will fit slide on passenger side board racks. The racks will be aluminium, and the patrol will slide them into position when they drive out of the patrol room and place the patrol board in the rack passenger side. Will keep you posted on the developments. Our end of season branch gear inspection got a big tick and we are all good to go for 2018/2019. There will be a working bee as to complete routine service and spit and polish work. I will let you know when. Thanks to you all for your assistance throughout the season.

IRB REPORT – BRENDEN SCOFFELL

What a season! This was one of our biggest seasons the coast has ever seen with the Commonwealth Games being held on the Gold Coast. Thankfully we had no major issues at Nobby’s throughout the Games period. This season we received a new IRB hull and motor thanks to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. This brings our IRB inventory up to an enormous 6 hulls and 6 motors, the most we’ve had at the club for a few years now. The new hull we received through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is the new “One Spec” design IRB from Zodiac Milpro. This IRB is part of the new generation of hull design which is being brought into surf clubs around Australia with new 4 stroke motors to possibly follow in the coming years. During the offseason, we will be getting the motors serviced and cleaned and hulls checked over for the coming lifesaving season to ensure that they are in good working order. The IRB shed will also be getting a well overdue clean up before the start of the new season. This year, Nobby’s has 5 members competing in IRB Racing at 2 clubs; Emily and Ray Sprake have moved to Southport SLSC and Matthew Scoffell, Shannon Hartill-Law and myself at Broadbeach SLSC. We have a few carnivals down on the Gold Coast in the coming weeks with the last round of the Ocean Roar Series at Kirra SLSC on June 9th and State Championships at Kurrawa SLSC on June 23rd and 24th. If you’re around, come down say hi and watch some of the high-octane racing action that IRB racing has. Hopefully Nobby’s will have its own team within the next 2 seasons so Emily, Matt, Ray, Shannon, myself and anyone else who’s interested in the sport can race under the Nobby’s cap. Moving forward from IRB racing, for the first time in a long time Nobby’s ran its own drivers course. 5 candidates participated in the course and all passed. These five people will be great assets to the club in the IRB field. We also ran another 2 crew courses where 6 people joined the Nobby’s IRB family. Anyway, that’s enough writing for one season I’ll see you all on the beach soon!
