MESSAGE FROM MEMBERSHIP Dear Members, 2016 has arrived with much excitement in “sunsational” Naples and the Club is ready to celebrate the season providing members with friendly gatherings, pleasurable memories and the ultimate Gulfshore lifestyle! Not too surprising, there is a new relocation trend with many of our members moving to Southwest Florida as full-time residents! “Rightsizing” from 3 to 4 homes to 1 or 2 homes makes life a lot simpler I’ve been told. The exodus is on and we are delighted that you have chosen Naples as your permanent residence. Welcome to paradise year round!
Several changes were made to ensure that the Club maintains its exclusivity and uniqueness. Members provided both positive and negative feedback and we listened. The input I received from members was very much appreciated, and interestingly enough, the majority of the members were very supportive of the new rules. The revised changes are posted in the newsletter for your review. Years have passed quickly since the LaPlaya Beach Club welcomed members in February, 2002 and the Golf Club in November, 2003. Members visiting the Club often reminisce or share their testimonials. It is especially nice to hear sentiments such as “What is not to like about LaPlaya?” Or “the best check I ever wrote”, or “my kids come to visit just to go to LaPlaya!.” Your sincere comments make me proud to be a part of LaPlaya and how lucky I am to be in this idyllic place. A club is the social center for its members, a place where kindred spirits gather to have fun and make friends. We hope that LaPlaya provides you with this experience. We look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!
Although spending days at the beach or playing a round of golf is the essence of the Naples lifestyle, a full slate of terrific events is planned for season; so please check the website and newsletter “calendar of events” and call soon to make reservations. Also, additional events are being added to the calendar as we move forward. Enjoy the lecture by Carrie Kerskie, Identity Theft Expert, Author and Professional Speaker, or The Sparkle Queen, popular Amanda Jaron with “Design Your Own Piece of Jewelry” to name a few fun events. At the golf club, everything is in full swing. Come play, dine or relax! Sandy Cotter Director of Membership La Playa Club Newsletter | Vol 83

Dear LaPlaya Beach and Golf Club Members,
Warm regards,
I’d like to personally thank the membership for graciously welcoming me to LaPlaya Beach and Golf Club. I officially started two days before Thanksgiving. This gave me the chance to truly immerse myself into my new position and afforded me the opportunity to meet a great number of members during the busy holiday season. My first impressions were, wow what a fantastic club, membership and staff. It is truly a wonderful team I have inherited. My team’s commitment is towards the finest service for our members. We have new staff and our tenured, superstarstaff. The veterans are working hard to show the new teammates the LaPlaya way. We are ALL working hard to continually improve the service, food, wine, entertainment and your overall beach club experience. We want you to enjoy your club to its fullest.
Scott Thomas Club Director LaPlaya Beach Club

CRAB & SHRIMP ETOUFFEE Ingredients 2 lbs. 16 oz. ¼ 1 tbs. 1/3 ½ 1 2 1 tsp 14 oz. 2 1 ½ tsp 1 tbs. 5 cups
raw shrimp peeled and deveined (21-25 count) can of good quality crab meat ($15-18 a can) stick of butter ( salted) canola oil cup of flour large white onion medium diced large green bell pepper medium diced ribs of celery medium diced chopped garlic chicken broth green scallions small chopped creole seasoning tomato paste - half of small can Tabasco dashes - use at your liking for extra heat cooked jasmine rice - Boil in a bag is ok and easy to cook. Cook at the end when your etouffee is almost done.
Directions In a medium pot melt butter and oil then add flour and cook on medium heat until the flour butter mixture (a roux) looks like peanut butter lightly browned. Then add the onion, pepper, celery, garlic and cook for about 10 minutes until the onion becomes translucent. You must stir constantly so the sauce doesn’t stick to bottom of the pan. Next add chicken broth, tomato paste, creole seasoning and cook for 15 minutes. Next add the shrimp and cook for another 5 minutes. By this time you should have a gravy looking sauce, add the crabmeat and cook for another 5 minutes , taste and add your Tabasco for extra heat. Spoon cooked rice into individual bowls and ladle etouffee over the top and garnish with chopped scallions. Chef Cheryl Golf Club

LAUREL'S
GOLF TIP The only thing you should be scooping on the golf course is the sand from the bucket to fill in your divot. I see a lot of people-in their effort to get the ball in the air - scoop through the ball with their right (left hand if you are a lefty) hand. Even if you get lucky and get it just right to get under it, the ball will not go very far. Most of the time, that will result in a skull shot. (You know, those shots that stay on the ground and go over the green). You need to keep the shaft of the club tilting forward (towards the target) not tilting away from the target through impact. Another way to think about it is to make sure that you keep your hands (handle) ahead of the ball at impact while sweeping through the grass. When you finish through a short chip the clubface should not be pointed at the sky. It should stay low through the shot. We don't need a lot of power for chip shots. We just need to get the ball in the air for a short distance and the ball will roll most of the way to the hole. If we need to carry over a bunker, rough, mound, etc then we will just use a longer swing. Longer the carry, longer the follow through.
During the winter months, the amount of play on the golf course will increase dramatically. In order that the additional traffic does not affect playability, we ask all members and guests to observe proper etiquette and assist in the repair of ball marks and the filling of divots during their round. Quite often the golf ball will impact the front of the green and roll toward the back. Players tend to walk straight to their ball. As a result of this, the front portions of the greens often have more unrepaired ball marks. We ask all players to please be aware of where their golf ball has impacted the green and look in that area for the ball mark. Encourage your playing partners to fix their own ball mark, plus one more, in order that the putting surfaces remain as pristine as possible all season long. In addition, the amount of divots will also increase as rounds increase. A divot that is not filled with sand will take twice as long to heal. This issue is of particular importance on Par 3 tees and fairway landing areas. Each golf cart is equipped with its own supply of sand and sand buckets are also located on all Par 3 tee boxes. Thanks very much for your continued assistance! Patrick Lewins Golf Course Superintendent
Next time you go out to practice, head to the chipping green first and try this out. Good Luck! Laurel Kean LPGA Professional

LETTER FROM
BEN
Dear Members, It is a pleasure getting to know each and everyone of you. The team in the Golf Shop is anchored by Laurel Kean and Dick Taylor. The four newbies are Nick Ellis, Vince Blascovich, Evan Yeutsy and myself. We look forward to a fun filled season. Below are the upcoming events for February and March. • February 14 – Valentines Day 12 & Dine – 3 PM Shotgun • February 18 – Ladies Invitational – 12PM Shotgun • March 4, 5 & 6 – Club Championship – Ladies and Men’s Divisions – Tee Times • March 10, 11 & 12 – Men’s Invitational – Course Open for play each day after 1:30 PM • March 18 – St. Patty’s Day 12 & Dine – 3 PM Shotgun I hope everyone is enjoying more access to morning tee times during high the season. The modifications of a 7:30 start on the 1st tee and alternating tee times every 8 and 9 has enhanced the access for all members. The effectiveness of this comes from the last player in the group to tee off is hitting their drive so the group can leave the tee on the schedule tee time. This helps create proper spacing between groups and allows for a good pace of play. An 18 hole round should take no longer than 4 hours. As it is high season, please remember that if your group is not a foursome that you will need to be patient in the morning as most mornings are sold out with foursomes. The afternoons are a little less busy and allow for a faster pace of play for singles and twosomes. There are many requests for groups to play in fivesomes. The rule during high season is that no more than 2 fivesomes are permitted on the course at the same time and fivesomes must receive permission from the Golf Shop. Thank you in advance for you assistance in scheduling these groups.
Change is always hard at first but the adjustments to Men’s Day are beginning to smooth out. The idea is to give as many members the option to participate in Men’s Day without being restricted to playing in an 8:30 AM Shotgun. By changing to tee times this allows more access to the tee sheet for all members and the option to play in the Men’s Day event by teeing off anytime during the day. Below are a few bullets describing how Men’s Day is currently working: • Men will have the tee until 10:00 AM and Ladies may schedule tee times after • Men may make their own group and will have the option to participate at anytime during the day however they must notify the Golf Shop before teeing off for their round • The Club will reserve 4 to 5 tee times between 8:15 and 8:45 AM to provide playing opportunities for those members looking to play that day that do not have a game • Based on the format, each player or group will turn their scorecard in after their round and the event will be scored at the end of the day. • The results will be posted in the Golf Shop and Men’s Locker room Lastly, please take care of your course by repairing your ball marks, raking bunkers, watching your footsteps on the green and sanding your divots in the fairway. Respectfully, Ben Bryant, PGA
The new Sun Mountain push carts have been well received and many members are enjoying a nice, brisk afternoon walk on our beautifully manicured course. Walking is allowed after 1 PM. You may rent a push cart or carry your clubs. No fivesomes will be allowed to walk the course. The use of the Speed Carts is reserved for Full Golf and Golf Only members.

MARTIN ROSS Martin Ross was born on June 12, 1959, in Tacoma, WA. The son of dancers, Martin & Helen Baespflug started him down the music path at the young age of 3 with classical piano lessons. By age 8 Martin was training in piano, French horn and ballet privately at both University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University. This rigorous training continued through his teens. From there it was music and entertaining for life. Martin has been a career musician since he was 17, playing locally, nationally and internationally; whether it be fronting a hometown band, laying it out on the keys solo or leading a 12 piece orchestra, he’ll be sure to entertain!
Life’s Work – Music & Entertainment Longtime Northwest Entertainer-Singer-SongwriterPianist Martin Ross performed from the late 80's to the early 00's, as the House Piano Man at the iconic "Cloud Room," in The Camlin Hotel, a downtown Seattle Landmark. The Cloud Room closed its doors and Martin became the resident entertainer at Daniel's Broiler in Lake Union, Seattle, & Bellevue, WA. After Daniel’s, Martin worked for 3 years internationally, touring between Dubai, Seoul, British Virgin Islands and Barbados. After the international tour, for the past several years, Martin has performed at the Starlight Room at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs, part of the Noble House Collection.
A Multifaceted Music Career His development in the field of music and entertainment has led him around the world as a solo act and as the leader of several groups, touring such places as the U.K., Hong Kong, Thailand, the Caribbean, Norway and the better part of the US and Canada.
Musical Collaboration Martin has had the privilege of sharing the stage (as an opener, musician or lead singer) with the likes of: Paul Revere & The Raiders, James Brown Band, Bonnie Raitt, Edgar Winter, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Sha Na Na, The Spinners, Peter Noon, Gary Lewis, Gary Puckett, Little Richard, Clint Black, LeAnn Rimes, & Dick Clark, to name a few. In the late 90's and into the 2000's Martin headed up several of his own bands ("Martin Ross Orchestra", "Martin Ross Trio","MartinRossGroup"). With these he billed shows in the US and internationally.
