LETTER FROM SANDY

DEAR MEMBERS, The busy Winter Season has come and gone in a flash! Hope you had a wonderful and memorable time! The weather was almost perfect! Throughout the spring period, we saw so many of our family members and friends enjoying the Club facilities. Now with summer approaching, not all of our members are migrating north for the summer anymore. It’s exciting to see so many of our members that have become residents and are enjoying the beauty of Naples year round. We had an amazing season in the Club! From the Member Minglers at the Golf Club to the Member Receptions at the Beach Club, the evenings were filled with warm camaraderie. The Motown and Mardi Gras evenings proved to be rousing events. Much applause to those members that danced the evenings away in the Club Lounge, reminiscent of Gene Kelly and Rita Hayworth or Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. You were fabulous in your dancing shoes! Martin Ross, proved to be not just a club pianist, but an extraordinary entertainer. If you missed Broadway Tunes or Billy Joel Night, you missed two fabulous evenings. One recent evening, a member celebrating her birthday requested a special song, Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers, a classic that brought tears to those in the room. So next season, take time to enjoy cocktails with Martin in the Club Lounge! More improvements this summer are scheduled for the resort. Starting July, renovations to the Gulf Tower guest rooms, hotel lobby, and Baleen Restaurant will be underway. Beach Club operations will continue to operate on a regular schedule. We will keep you in the loop and will post information thru our weekly Thursday email blasts. Reciprocal Program arrangements have been made with a number of other clubs for your summer pleasure. This is your opportunity, from May thru October, to enjoy dining or golfing at a multitude of local clubs. More information listed in “The View”. The continued success of the LaPlaya Club is dependent upon the steady commitment of our staff and management, who share the common objective of elevating the club experience for all members. You may have already received the Annual Member Survey online. Please take a few minutes to complete the form and submit it back to us. We survey our members so that you may share your perception, opinion and attitude on your membership experience. The main objective for conducting an annual survey is to help LaPlaya understand how members feel about their membership and create actionable items that improve your member experience. We truly welcome any ideas and suggestions. The secret is out to the world, that if you're looking for happiness and a healthy lifestyle in the next place you call home, look no further: Naples, Florida is your city. Yet, our club members already know it and are the lucky ones! You discovered the best kept secret in Naples – the LaPlaya Club. Let me wish everyone a happy and healthy summer. We’ll be here preparing a fun-filled slate of events for you for next season. For those Members who will be headed north, or plan to embark on wonderful exciting vacations across the country or the world, safe travels to you all. Don’t forget to send pictures of your travels for us to post on the member website! Sandy Cotter Director of Membership

JEFF NICHOLS

We would like to bid farewell to Scott Thomas, Club Director, and Tom Wright, Food & Beverage Manager. Scott and his family moved back to Texas and Tom took retirement as he wanted to travel. We wish them both the best of luck.

It’s great to be back!

We would like to take this opportunity to announce our new Director of Club Operations, Jeff Nichols. Although new in this position, many of you may remember Jeff from his previous six year tenure as Director of Food and Beverage for the LaPlaya Private Dining Club. Jeff has returned after a year and half at another private country club, to manage and direct the daily operation of the LaPlaya Beach Club. Please join us in welcoming him back to the Club! You will see him in the dining room and around the Club often, so please take the opportunity to say hello!

I may have only been away from LaPlaya for a year and a half, but it personally felt longer than that. I want to thank all of the members for the overwhelmingly warm welcome and well wishes in my new role as Director of Club Operations. LaPlaya was a huge part of my life for six years and there was no way that I could have turned down the opportunity to return. For our members heading north for the summer, we wish you a safe and fun filled summer. For our local members, I look forward to seeing you at the Club. Jeff Nichols Director of Club Operations

PARTNER PROTECTING

OUR SEA TURTLES Nesting Seasons from May thru October! Between May and October, our LaPlaya beach, in common with beaches all along the Southwest Florida coast, becomes a nesting site for endangered sea turtles. The females come ashore at night, climb above the water line and dig a shallow nest into which they lay ping-pong-ball-sized eggs. They then cover the eggs with sand and return to the sea. We can encourage a successful subsequent hatch by remaining far away from nest sites, and when a female is on her nest by making no noise. If disturbed, she’ll simply re-enter the water and abort her eggs. So don’t approach, prod, frighten, or in any way disorient a nesting turtle.

APPRECIATION We wish to acknowledge and give special thanks to our Preferred Partners who gave their generous time to make this past season’s Schedule of Events so successful! We sincerely appreciate their providing our members with such wonderful and sociable events; the level of detail, and the way they conducted their fun and educational presentations as a whole. Thanks to all!

If and when the eggs hatch, do not remove the hatchlings from the nest; they’ll emerge when they’re ready to. When they do, let them find their way to the water on their own. Bright lights can disorient them, causing them to crawl in circles, even away from the water, so please turn off all lights, including flashlights, flash photography, and video equipment.

As we look forward to the summer months, reciprocal season will begin May 1st and end October 31st. You should have already received a copy of the list of reciprocal clubs. To make a tee time at a reciprocal club, please call the golf shop. The Golf Club will be closed on Monday’s June through September (except for Labor Day, Monday, September 4th the Golf Club will be open on Monday and closed Tuesday, September 5th). There are two weeks this Summer the Golf Club will be closed for golf course maintenance (June 5th through June 12th and July 31st through August 7th). While the course is closed for maintenance, the golf team will be available to make reciprocal times. During the summer months, enhancements will be made on the course and to the practice facility. The clubhouse, golf shop and locker rooms will be freshened up as well. In order to do this, these areas will need to be closed from June 1st through approximately the second week of August. The kitchen will remain open with dining on the verandah and patio and the golf shop will be operating out of the administration building on the south side of the parking lot. The management team will be working on the Schedule of Events for next season and release the dates as soon as possible to allow you to make plans to be here for your favorite events. Have a safe and healthy summer and we look forward to seeing you back here in the fall! Best regards, Ben Bryant, PGA

GOLF TIP

L E T T E R F RO M PAT R I C K

UPCOMING THIS SUMMER As the winter season winds down for yet another year and the warm summer months are rapidly approaching, the Laplaya Golf Maintenance Department is busy putting together a comprehensive plan for summer maintenance projects and course improvements. First and foremost we will be carrying out multiple aerifications of greens, tees and fairways for control of thatch and organic matter. These summer practices are crucial to maintaining the long term health of the golf course. We will also be renovating the north end of the driving range. We will be installing a short game area consisting of multiple additional target greens, a pitching area as well as leveling and regrassing the tee top. Additionally, we will be adding an alternate tee complex on hole #7 and grassing a portion of the existing screened cart path on hole #12. All of the areas will have Celebration Bermuda grass turf installed. This type of Bermuda grass will have much better density and an aggressive growth habit superior to our current turf

Taking the game from the practice area to the golf course. It is easier to get in a groove on the driving range. We tend to hit balls with our favorite club one ball after another; perfect lie after perfect lie. Then, we get to Hole #1 at LaPlaya GC, and we never get a flat lie on the entire hole. The first thing I look at when I get to my ball on the course is to look at the lieuphill, downhill, side hill, sitting down or good flat lie. This will determine what club I can hit the best off a tough lie. The best way to practice is on the golf course hitting 3 or 4 shots for each shot. Later in the afternoon is less busy to do this. You will see where you need to improve your game. Another way to practice is to hit to different targets on the driving range using different clubs. Hit balls playing certain holes, using what you might likely hit on that hole. Take your time more ( get behind the ball and line each shot up). We all like to just stand there and hit ball after ball. That is not how you play when you are on the golf course. You can do the same with your short game. One chip to a hole then go putt it out. Take your time to line up the putt and keep your head and lower body steady and make the putt! If you want to improve your scores, practice what gives you the most trouble. Have fun while practicing!! Laurel Kean LPGA Professional

Heavy landscape and tree trimming as well as numerous plant additions will also be performed. This will improve the aesthetic value of the property as well as providing much needed airflow improvements and more sunlight into key areas. The cumulative effect of this work will set us up to have a fantastic season when the majority of our members and guests return. I look forward to updating all on our progress throughout the summer months. Happy Travels! Patrick Lewins Golf Course Superintendent

LETTER FROM ALAN

DEAR MEMBERS, Monday April 3rd 2017 will mark the start of the Dianna Compton farewell at LaPlaya Golf Club. After nearly 37 years of dedicated and distinguished service Dianna is looking forward to a well earned, and well deserved retirement, starting this June. As we talk about the story of LaPlaya Golf Club, Dianna’s service extends back to when the club was called Palm River Golf Club and was owned by the Fejes family. Dianna is the only employee remaining from those days, who helped with the transition from Palm River to LaPlaya in 1999/2000 and has helped shape the clubs continued evolution to its present day standing. The club wouldn’t run as smoothly as it does, or be as happy a place for all our members and employees to enjoy without Dianna’s direct and skillfully developed sense of knowing the right thing to do, always! Thank you for everything Dianna, we all wish you a happy, healthy and long retirement. I’m delighted to announce Dianna’s successor will be Kimberly Michaux. Known to most, if not all of you, Kimberly was the Assistant Controller at LaPlaya Resort for several years, prior to that worked as Controller at Mediterra Golf Club, and brings a wealth of preferred club accounting and management expertise to her new role here at LaPlaya Golf Club. Please welcome Kimberly has she starts her new role on Monday, and wish Dianna the very best for a long and happy retirement. Thank you everyone. Alan Findlay Golf Club General Manager
