LETTER FROM SANDY
DEAR MEMBERS Welcome to another fun-filled season kicking off with much anticipation and excitement! We are delighted to welcome all of our wonderful members back to the Club for the 2017 – 2018 Season. If you think Naples was a sleepy town this past summer, that is not the case. As shared in the NABOR Report, Naples realtors sold more existing homes in July than in January or February, a statistical reality that busts the old myth that home sales stall in the summer. With accolades and rave reviews by the national press touting Naples as the healthiest and happiest city in the United States, the Top Ten Best Cities to Live and Best Beaches, our destination has truly become one of the most desirable in the country. With that being said, having the privilege to reside in South Florida for over 30 years, I thought it might be interesting to share how Naples acquired its name. So in The View, on page 4, you'll find an article about Naples history that I think you might enjoy. A multitude of activities and events are planned for season, so just sign up and join in on the fun. From lecture series, off site events, fashion shows, culinary cooking series and so much more. Added activities will be added to the calendar as we move into season. While you’ve been enjoying your summer travels, the resort has been in transition with renovation, actually making our Naples waterfront paradise even better. Take a minute to click on www.laplayaresort.com / Our Resort / Renovations and read the letter by our Managing Director, Marco Perry, as he shares the vision of what is soon to be our new Gulf Tower spaces including our lobby, Baleen Restaurant and guest rooms. Over at the Golf Club, two major summer maintenance programs kept the team busy while the Clubhouse underwent interior renovations. The team is awaiting your arrival and excited to share the transformation and also share a packed schedule of events planned just for you. It is important to our team to preserve member loyalty and exceed your expectations. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything that we can do to further enhance your experiences here at the Club. See you soon at LaPlaya!
WELCOME NEW
LAPLAYA CLUB MEMBERS Welcome to your new, fun and exciting club! MEMBER SURVEY RESULTS The 2016/2017 survey was made available online and we received responses from more than a third of our Membership. Overall, the collective response was very positive; 92 percent indicated they would recommend the club to others, as well as an overwhelming number of members stating the Club exceeded their expectations. While this is most gratifying, additional responses did bring to the surface some areas that can benefit from improvement. Scores in the Club dining room were once again high in service however many of the comments related to menu variety, consistency of menu and price value. Drink prices have been evaluated and lowered to be more competitive with other local clubs and restaurants, and the always popular Prix Fixe menu returned this past summer and will continue to be offered. Mindful of expressed health concerns and changing eating habits, our dining menus will be more varied to include smaller portions, lighter portions, gluten free and vegetarian options. Length of service, particularly at lunch will be addressed as well. As a friendly reminder, members at the beach or poolside are welcome in the Club for lunch, the only dress requirements being footwear and cover-ups. You will see additional changes in the Club dining room from the menus to our service. Reservations will continue to be necessary and we will always do our best to accommodate your requests. While there is not a single seat in the Club that doesn’t have a great view, our most popular reservation time and location is outside at 7 pm. We sincerely request that you remain flexible with reservation times. Everyone will see the sunset, regardless of your table’s location. One of the biggest noted areas of improvement is accounting. We understand the many frustrations with the new billing system and lack of details with member charges. There is hopefully a light at the end of the tunnel in with the many challenges that we have had. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding with this matter. As for the areas of beach, pool, and Tiki Bar, survey responses were very good; the most addressed concerns were speed of service, consistency of food and variety of menu items. We are currently implementing new guidelines to help us improve in the areas mentioned by Members. We are hard at work focusing on retuning the “little things” that make LaPlaya such a special place. Several specific items that were mentioned on the survey have already been completed or are currently being addressed. We greatly appreciate the feedback and suggestions, as our goals are for LaPlaya to continue to be one of the best clubs in the area and your preferred destination. As a reminder, LaPlaya is available to host special events, occasions or business related functions that you may have. Feel free to reach out to Shelley, Eric or myself to see how we may be able to assist in planning your special event. We hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and look forward to your return! DID YOU KNOW?
Naples Florida HISTORY Once, the only people to stroll Naples' seven miles of white, sandy beaches, were the Caloosa Indians. The first settlers, Roger Gordon and Joe Wiggins, arrived in Naples in the late 1860's. A river and two inlets still bear their names. Throughout the 1870's and '80's, magazine and newspaper stories telling of the area's mild climate and abundant fish and game likened it to the sunny Italian peninsula. The name Naples caught on when promoters described the bay as "surpassing the bay in Naples, Italy." In 1887, a group of wealthy Kentuckians, led by Walter N. Haldeman, owner of the Louisville Courier-Journal, purchased virtually the entire town of Naples. One of the first improvements Haldeman and the Naples Company made was to build a pier 600 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. The unusual "T" shape allowed large ships to dock easily. Despite being destroyed and rebuilt three times, the pier's "T" shape remains. Naples quickly gained a reputation as a winter resort. Social life revolved around the Naples Hotel, which played host to celebrities such as Rose Cleveland, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, Greta Garbo, Hedy Lamarr, and Gary Cooper. As the town of Naples went up, so did the price of property. The cost of a beachfront lot soon reached $125. In 1911, Barron G. Collier, who had made his fortune in streetcar advertising, visited nearby Useppa Island. He was so taken with the area that he bought over a million acres of untouched swampland including most of Naples. Collier believed that Florida's west coast could enjoy the same boom that the east coast was experiencing in the 1920's; but first it was necessary to bring in road and railroads. Based on Collier's promise to help build the Tamiami Trail, in 1923 the state legislature created Collier County, of which Naples is the county seat. Collier spent more than $1 million of his own money to construct the Tamiami Trail, which opened in 1926 as the only paved highway linking the state's two largest cities - Tampa and Miami. Collier died before he could see his dream come true, but come true it did. Today, Naples enjoys unparalleled prosperity. And the area's unrivaled sport fishing, hunting, boating, sun bathing, and beach combing attract people today just as it did a century ago. *Reprint thanks to Dining and Doing Guide.

NOTES FROM KAREN
EMAIL BLAST I occasionally receive phone calls from members stating they do not get the LaPlaya Weekly email blast. This is an easy fix! Since I send the email blast out to hundreds of email addresses, my email address tends to get dumped into your spam folder. Quick fix is to simply add my email address knardella@laplayaclub.com to your safe sender list (contacts) and you should start to receive them! Another reason for your not receiving our weekly email blast is that we could have an incorrect email address. To see if your email address is incorrect or you need to update your email address, just go to the club website www.laplayaclub.com and logon and on the private side, go to My Club, My Profile and update your personal information. Be sure to save us on your favorites! The Club website has all the information you are looking for…. from guest card request forms to the latest menus available in the Club dining room.
Whether you are a beginner or experienced rider, eco trained guides travel with you on a two-hour unforgettable tour where sometimes you can enjoy a close up experience with playful dolphins, manatees and many bird species while cruising past the homes and condos on the Estero Bay. On the return, if the gulf waters are flat and calm, you can fulfill your “need for speed” or just cruise along the picturesque coast.
Family Fun Day
Enjoy your own Private Captained Cruise! Whether you would like fishing, shelling, dolphin watching, or dine at the Bays edge, your captain will customize to meet your needs! Also available are passenger vessels that can hosts 6, 36, 49, 69 guests, and can be boarded from the LaPlaya boat docks or the AWE Marina.
Fishing
Our professional crew has the experience and knowledge that every client is looking for in a captain. If you would like to fish individually or with a group, All Water Excursions can customize a Fishing Package for a fun or serious fishing tournament with multiple 4 passengers or one large vessel. Backwater, Offshore, and Near Coastal vessels are available. AWE provides all activities on the water and look forward to having you on board! Call (239) 594-0213. Trudy Stemen Vice President, AWE

NEW FOR FALL
Targeted Tone & Tighten Body Wraps
Tightening and toning are the pillars of this new treatment. A powerful blend of salts, minerals and seaweeds work together to target cellulite and poor skin tone on hips, thighs, abdomen and backs of arms.
Independent Clinical Trial Self Assessment*
Nigari salt deeply cleanses, followed by a targeted sculpting massage to kick-start the micro-circulation, promoting a smoother silhouette and invigorating the entire body. A cooling rubberized mask, rich in superdetoxing caffeine and green clay is applied to problem areas, whilst clinically proven Red Algae redefines areas prone to sagging. The result is a targeted body airbrush and skin that looks and feels intensely toned and refreshed.

Targets
Infrared Saunas use infrared light to safely heat the body without the risk of fire & burns presented by a traditional sauna heating element. An infrared sauna produces the same infrared heat produced by the sun. The radiant heat from an infrared sauna surrounds you and penetrates deeply into your joints, muscles and tissues increasing oxygen flow and circulation. Using a Sauna helps to remove impurities from your cells, specifically the cells inside our fat where our body stores waste and harmful toxins such as cholesterol and heavy metals. When used properly, an infrared sauna will help improve your overall wellness. Infrared heat is all around us and you have felt it from sources like fire, heated sand on the beach and the sun (without the harmful ultraviolet waves that the sun gives off). Just as visible light has a range of wavelengths (running from red to violet), so does infrared light: longer wavelength infrared waves are thermal, while short or near infrared waves are not hot at all, in fact, you cannot even feel them. It is the far infrared energy that is most beneficial, penetrating the skin and increasing circulation to help rid the body of harmful toxins. Near and mid infrared enhance the benefits of far infrared.

FALL 2017
WE'RE 'PRIMED' & READY TO GO Welcome back Members! It's been a long hot and very productive summer for your LaPlaya G.C. Team. We are completing work on the clubhouse refresh, and then turning to finish the Members 'retreat' the former Leadbetter Academy building next to the newly installed, re-grassed short game practice area. This new practice area allows for more capacity for game improvement, & instructional opportunities now at both ends of the practice facility. On the golf course, hole no.7 now has a new 'alternate' tee providing a dog leg left now instead of dog leg right, and a 'wee' bit shorter (yardage) too! Hole 12, best short hole in Naples, now has a lot of changes to the look and feel of the hole. From the newly installed cart path, significantly more turf, taking away much of the shell cart path for better long term drainage of both 12 and especially hole 11. Turf conditions for the entire course are looking excellent as we await the majority of our members return. Ben, Laurel, Nick & Dick will once again welcome back Hunter in the golf shop for another high season and Terry & Thomas outside to conduct & lead cart barn team duties. Off the golf course Jo & Chef Cheryl have been working hard in planning & creating food & beverage events to complement the newly redecorated interiors. Michelle & Sandy are offering a spectacular promotion to existing members dues whom refer a new member. Please call, email or text to find out more! Speaking of text; we will begin a new texting service this season that will provide members up to the minute updates to their cell (smart) phones for all events happening around the golf club campus. 2017 is a prime number and your team is 'primed' for another memorable season ahead. Yours Aye! Alan Findlay Golf Club General Manager

LETTER FROM BEN
DEAR MEMBERS, As the summer starts to wind down, I hope everyone has had a safe and healthy break from Naples. The early part of the summer was very wet but as you arrive in Naples to ready for the upcoming season, I think you will find the golf course in nice shape and a lot of familiar faces amongst the team members. The event schedule is rounding into shape and the golf dates to save on your calendar are: • • • • • • • • •

During the holiday weeks for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, Ladies' Day and Men’s Day will not be held to allow for your family members and that are visiting to play before heading back to the winter wonderland. With the North End of the Practice Facility being converted to a short game practice area, there will be ample opportunity to work on shorter shots allowing for better scores. You will be able to practice shots from the edge of the green up to 100 yards. Please take advantage of this to the fullest to help with your enjoyment of the game. We look forward to your return and a lot of fun on the links. Respectfully, Ben Bryant, PGA Director of Golf

GOLF TIP
L E T T E R F RO M PAT R I C K
SUMMER MONTHS The Laplaya Golf Maintenance team had a busy summer. The summer months this year were marked by rainfall totals that far exceeded our historical averages. During the months of the June/ July the golf course received a total of 36 of rain. Our historical average for the same time period is 16. However, in spite of the wet weather, we were still able to complete our full slate of summer cultural practices to the course which included multiple aerifications to all greens, collars, tees and fairways.
Proper Balance is key to a consistent golf swing. Good balance starts with the setup. Feel your weight on the middle (or balls) of your feet. You want to maintain your balance throughout the swing. I see a lot of players start to stand up a little , coming out of their posture as they get to their backswing. Much of this can be caused by a tight lower back and or tight hamstrings. You will improve your swing just by stretching on a daily basis. Make it a priority to improve your flexibility! The more you do it, the easier it will get, and the better you will feel! I also see many players stand up and get back on their heels as they are starting their downswing. This pulls the club up and away from the ball at impact usually with an open clubface resulting in a thin shot to the right ( to the left if you are left handed). Practice teeing a ball up and swinging with 60 % effort being mindful of staying in your posture (or feeling the weight in the middle of you feet) throughout your swing. Make sure you are moving through the ball and finishing on your left side (right side for lefties). It is easy to be thinking so much of posture that we don't move THROUGH the ball. Be patient with your progress. And always have kind and positive words for yourself. You get what you think about whether you want it or not. Laurel Kean LPGA Professional
In addition, there are a number of improvements that were also made to the course during the summer months. On hole #7, four alternate tee boxes were added to the left of the existing tees. On hole #12, we mitigated the majority of the soft path that was on the left side of the hole by adding nearly 12,000 sq. ft. of new turf. Lastly, a short game practice facility was added the north end of the driving range. We will now have 7 targets in varying distances ranging from 30 to 100 yards as well a chipping area dedicated to perfecting shorter shots. All of these improvements will set us up to have a fantastic winter season this year. See you on the course! Patrick Lewins Golf Course Superintendent 23
