Dear Members
Cheers and more Cheers! Bring it on 2018! We’re ready for you! 2018 promises to be a fun-filled amazing season with an engaging calendar of events, celebrations, off-site venues, live music and dancing! The Tiki Bar is ready to serve you with a completely new beach menu, and with our same dynamic, enthusiastic team. The bandstand is being rebuilt after the storm, as the popular “Music by the Pool” series will return on the weekends, for your listening enjoyment along with your favorite libations! Since our members enjoy gathering at the Tiki Bar, Mark Pergolini, our Tiki Manager, has planned some fun filled evening events for season, so keep an eye out for our Thursday weekly email blast for the postings of these member get-togethers at the Tiki. Don’t forget Member Happy Hour every day from 4 – 6 pm at the pool, beach and Tiki Bar featuring half priced drinks. There are many new things kicking off at the Club, so stay tuned. You spoke in the survey, we listened. Keep on the lookout for the “Adults Only Pool Section” as we work out the details. Martin Ross returns this year to entertain you in the Club Lounge with his wide repertoire of songs. Thanks to the many members that kept Martin company at the local venues here in town while we were closed. Martin says he sincerely appreciated your support and seeing all of our wonderful members off property.

Regarding Hurricane Irma, please read Jeff’s article on the Club damage in this copy of “The View”. What I share with you about Irma is this, she kicked us, she invaded our space completely, and she rendered our employees helpless in many cases, yet the resiliency of our team was amazing. Employees appeared immediately after the storm, when it was difficult to even navigate driving to the resort, all wanting to jump in and make it beautiful again. I sincerely compliment the owners/partners of the LaPlaya Resort, Beach & Golf Club, who immediately made taking care of the employees their top priority which sent a special message to our staff that we truly care. Retaining our staff was of utmost importance as our employees are valued members of our operation. We are #LaPlayaStrong! Membership Categories – Starting January 1, 2018, should you refer a new prospect to the Club, we will be offering only Non-Refundable Memberships for our Social, Full and Golf programs. This is the trend in the Club market, not only in Naples but throughout the country. Don’t forget, when a member refers a new member, we have our Member Perks program; gifts of spa treatments, dinners and resort stays. We value our members so much and thank you for being a part of this wonderful lifestyle that we offer at LaPlaya! The Management and staff are committed to making this season at LaPlaya the highlight of your year! In closing, I repeat that wise old saying “Life is too Short”, for sure it is, so I hope that you make this a year of finding fulfillment, joy, peace and purpose. See you at the Club! Hurricane Irma Recap + Recovery It has definitely been a challenging and interesting couple of months as we took on an unprecedented event here at LaPlaya. Many members have inquired about the extent of the hurricane damage to LaPlaya Resort and Beach Club. As with any major category hurricane, a certain level of damage is to be expected regardless of how much planning and preparation went into securing the property. The biggest challenge with this storm had to do with the driving winds and rain. The force of the wind allowed for rain to be forced through many areas of the property. In addition, a storm surge was anticipated and unfortunately came to fruition. Thankfully, the predicted surge was not as massive as forecasted. The surge did still manage to make its way into the first floor of the Beach House, onto the pool area and into the locker rooms. Hurricane remediation teams were onsite shortly after the storm to begin the difficult task of remediating and restoring all affected areas. Other than some debris and a few missing thatches from the Tiki roof, the member’s favorite hangout was unscathed. The Seminoles did return to rethatch the entire Tiki Bar roof. Mark, Rob and the rest of the Tiki team were hard at work immediately after the storm cleaning and preparing for the reopening of the Tiki bar. The Tiki team also utilized the down time to work on some new and creative menu ideas. We thankfully did not lose any real estate on the beach. If anything we gained about 2 feet in elevation from sand that was deposited near the beach huts, walkways and sea oats. Some of the sand was relocated to better utilized areas such as the fire pit. The Beach Club did suffer from extensive water intrusion throughout. Approximately 50% of the dry wall in the Club had to be replaced as well as all of the flooring. The ceiling in the club lobby was saturated with moisture and collapsed. The awning on the Club veranda did suffer damage as well. Repairs were made to replace any damaged areas in the Club. As with all of SW Florida, the resort did suffer a considerable loss of vegetation and landscaping. Landscaping crews were onsite clearing, trimming and replanting to help the beautification of the property. We’re excited to see how the new landscaping will mature and help add to the look and feel of the property. The best news to report is that the majority of LaPlaya employees made it through the storm unscathed. It’s been a wonderful site to see the entire team do their part to get LaPlaya back up and running. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we navigated through this difficult time.

Your Food & Beverage Managers DECANTING WINE Not everyone is familiar with the purpose of decanting, or when it is working. Simply stated, decanting wine is essentially pouring a bottle of wine into a clean, separate container. Decanting serves two purposes; to remove sediment from full-bodied wines, and to aerate young wines. Aged full-bodied red wines often have sediment that settles on the bottom of the wine bottle over time. This can occur through aging, most common less than five to ten years. Certain producers prefer not to filter or fine their wines before bottling to preserve a rich and robust structure.
fresh mozzarella, baby loom tomato, herb oil, balsamic glaze
Haricot Vert & Baby Carrot Chive Mash Potato Veal Meatballs
Young wines can benefit from decanting, to a certain extent. Aerating can help to soften harsh tannins and make them more accessible if consuming without any extended aging. This rapid incorporation of oxygen can help liven and open-up some wines that may seem austere.
pomodoro sauce, asiago cheese, micro basil
Chicken Marsala wild mushrooms & marsala wine sauce
Roasted Salmon gnocchi, broccoli rabe, lemon caper butter CHEF ATTENDED PASTA STATION
Fusilli, Penne & Spaghetti
Sauces and additions to Include marinara sauce, parmesan cream sauce & pesto sauce
Grilled Chicken, Italian Sausage, Green Peas, Artichokes, Bell Peppers, Baby Spinach, Mushrooms, Yellow Onion DESSERT
Mini Cannoli, Tiramisu, Pana Cotta
Throughout the industry, some restaurants will decant all red selections, regardless if needed. Other experts will refrain from decanting older, delicate wines with obvious sediment out of the concern that the intensity will quickly dissipate because it has already evolved and aged sufficiently in the bottle. Ultimately, the most important component in decanting is your preference. However you enjoy, it is the way to go! Our Service team here at the Club is happy to decant (or not decant) any selection that you wish. Cheers! Shelley Johnson Eric Swaby REMINDERS You may begin to make Easter reservations starting on January 1, 2018. Please call 239-254-5008 if you have any questions. Everything Crackers INGREDIENTS
1 Pk. Flat Out Pizza Crust (rustic white) 6 pieces to a pk. Publix carries them Parchment paper or wax paper Olive Oil Vegetable Spray (Pam) Garlic Salt Onion Flakes Black & White Sesame Seeds Black Pepper Poppy Seeds
METHOD Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a flat pan such as a cookie sheet and place either wax paper or parchment paper to line the pan. The flat out crusts come 6 pieces to the pack, so depending on how many crackers you want to use, is up to you. Before placing the soft crust on the cookie sheet, if want you want you can cut them in strips, triangles, circles, squares or just leave them whole to break off freely. Once the soft crust is on the sheet, pan brush freely with olive oil to cover the whole crust. Next, sprinkle the dry herbs evenly, use as much as you desire; you can go heavy or light on some of the herbs. After the crust is coated spray some vegetable spray over the whole crackers, this helps to keep the herbs attached. Bake in oven for 10 minutes to achieve a light brown toasted color. Let cool for 10 minutes then serve. You can experiment with any dry herbs that you would like to top the crackers with. Have fun with them. Enjoy, Chef Cheryl

Oppertunity Knocks
We are all breathing a collective sigh after all the weather travails of 2017; a record drought early in the year, a record summer rainfall, followed on September 10th by a once in a generation Hurricane (Irma) to put the cherry on top this weather Sundae! Not the ideal conditions suited towards maintaining preferred golf course playing conditions or clubhouse roofs for that matter. However, within great challenge lies great opportunity too. First of all, the Golf Course Maintenance Dept, Patrick and Team had to hack their way into the Maintenance Compound the morning after Irma, just to be able to then hack their way onto the golf course to see the first of over 500 trees damaged or felled by the storm and the near total disruption to all landscape and plants across the property. Added to that the automated irrigation system boxes destroyed, lightening detection system ruined, cart paths ripped up by tree root and flood water alike 26 days later your golf course re-opened on October 3rd and ironically four weeks later in the dining room, after it was detected, Irma had breached the roof and ceiling of the dining room which took longer to repair than 100 acres of turf! But reopen we did and what we discovered about ourselves during this time of re-building was that the people who own, work, and whom we work for, all became one. This special alchemy between, ownership, membership and staff forged in the aftermath of this terrible storm will provide this unique opportunity to drive us forward for an exceptional year and season ahead; the first season post-Irma.
•
Opportunity knocks to see a golf course without as many trees on it as previous years? Will handicaps be going down this year?
•
Opportunity knocks for any member or their guest who scores a hole-in-one during the 2018 Men’s and Ladies' Invitational events, (‘Shoot-out’ for the Men) ‘No dues’ for 2018/19! Ben, Laurel, where do I sign up?
•
Opportunity knocks to participate in any one of the planned Food & Beverage events coming up that our members so covet. Joanna, Debbie, & Chef Cheryl are ready.
We are very grateful for the support from all our members during this challenging time of recovery, and the gratitude displayed from members in well-wish messages, calls, e-mails, and in person are so appreciated. This gratitude and support provides your club the momentum, the lift required, and the ‘opportunity’ for another great golfing year ahead. Yours Aye! Alan Findlay Golf Club General Manager

Season is Rounding
into Shape
The clubhouse and golf course are bustling again after Hurricane Irma made her appearance in early September. We hope the holidays were good to everyone and that you were able to spend quality time with family and friends. The new short game practice area on the North End of Practice Facility is open and ready for use. If you need a refresher after coming out of the frozen tundra, Laurel, Nick and I are here to help with all areas of your game.
GOLF TIP
Laurel's
Corner
Practice! If you want to improve any aspect in your golf game, you actually have to practice. Have a purpose when going to the practice facility. Do not just hit balls, chips, or putts mindlessly when you practice. If you are not focused on doing a SPECIFIC thing better than the last time you practiced, you will not improve. Find the areas that needs improvement. Then focus on drills that will get you the results you want (ask one of us in the Golf shop for certain drills). When you are changing something in your swing, it will feel awkward at first. As you practice, this will become less awkward. Do not be so concerned if you hit some bad shots when starting a swing change. Work through it and as you get the timing and tempo of the new move, you will see good things starting to happen. If you get tired or start to lose focus, go do something else. Deliberate practice is the key to improving. Have fun with it! Laurel Kean LPGA Professional

The ladies are doing a season long ringer event. If you would like to participate, please let Laurel know. Men’s Day is each Wednesday. Men’s Day is an 18 hole event and will tee off at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start. One Wednesday a month, you can make your own foursome and play anytime during the day or in the 8:30 a.m. shotgun. These days will be noted on the sign-up sheets in the golf shop. Also, beginning in January, there will be a Money List for Men’s Day and the leading money winner will receive a bonus at Men’s Closing Day in April. Please look for the schedule of upcoming demo days and ball fittings. These will be posted in the locker rooms, Golf Shop and on ForeTees. If there is something you but don’t see in the Golf Shop, please ask anyone of our team members and we will be happy to order it for you. We look forward to seeing you around the club. Summer
Months
The Laplaya Golf Maintenance team had a busy summer. The summer months this year were marked by rainfall totals that far exceeded our historical averages. During the months of the June/ July the golf course received a total of 36” of rain. Our historical average for the same time period is 16”. However, in spite of the wet weather, we were still able to complete our full slate of summer cultural practices to the course which included multiple aerifications to all greens, collars, tees and fairways. In addition, there are a number of improvements that were also made to the course during the summer months. On hole #7, four alternate tee boxes were added to the left of the existing tees. On hole #12, we mitigated the majority of the soft path that was on the left side of the hole by adding nearly 12,000 sq. ft. of new turf. Lastly, a short game practice facility was added the north end of the driving range. We will now have 7 targets in varying distances ranging from 30 to 100 yards as well a chipping area dedicated to perfecting shorter shots. All of these improvements will set us up to have a fantastic winter season this year. See you on the course! Patrick Lewins Golf Course Superintendent
Thank you LaPlaya Members! I have to tell you how fun and exciting it is to sell memberships at our Club. We have such an amazing membership, who truly loves LaPlaya. My favorite part of giving a tour at the Golf Club, is when I have members stop by the table and add such joy to the conversation by chiming in “You have to join this club” or “Joining LaPlaya was the best decision we have ever made”, and my all-time favorite “We’ll take her, the jury is still out on you”… you are the face of LaPlaya, the spirit that shows who we are, and that life is too short to not enjoy yourself! I’ve had members flag me down on the cart while driving prospective members around the course, literally running, arms waving in the air like one of those wacky, wavy tube people at the car dealership; to tell prospective members how great it is to be a part of this Club (you know who you are). We do have the happiest members in Naples, I tell prospective members that, and you all prove it with your smiles, kind words, and concern for staff and other members. WE ARE LaPLAYA!! So what is new in membership opportunities at the Golf Club? We have brought back the executive program for the under 55 golfer. If you have friends or children who would be interested in joining as a Golf-Only member that are under 55, please contact me for details on this program. Keep your referrals coming! I love hearing where people have heard about LaPlaya; members neighbors, friends and colleagues, realtors, interior designers, “someone in the airport”, friends of other people who aren’t even members yet. As always, you will receive a thank you gift for referring a member who joins the Club, we appreciate you! Michelle Buist Golf Sales Specialist
