dear members

The summer season is upon us here in Southwest Florida, and although it is not the “off-season” as it was years ago, we certainly observed a downshift in events and business in the latter part of April. We also sadly viewed the migration of our “snowbird members” with their summer departure to cooler climes and more good times. And while we miss our seasonal members, we will admit it's easier to get a table at a restaurant or a tee time for golf! This would be a great reason for you to return to check on your Naples winter home this summer! And for our year round residents, did you know that we live in the Happiest and Healthiest City in the U.S.? For the third consecutive year, Naples and nearby communities top the ranking at the number one spot in the GallupSharecare State of American Well-Being 217 Community Rankings, released on March 13, 2018. Three years in a row and also the first community to rank #1 or #2 across all five elements of well-being. Unbelievable and simply amazing! No wonder we love our little paradise! LATEST NEWS: As we look ahead, several new happenings recently have or will take place at the LaPlaya Beach Club in the coming months.

• • •

On April 16, we launched the “Adults Only Tranquility” pool on the north end of the Pool Oasis. All new lockers were installed in the Locker rooms that will not rust or warp. In September, the Private Dining Club will close as we usually do every year, but this year is special as we tackle a major renovation to the Club dining room and veranda. We are so excited and we will share “sneak peaks” moving forward! Renovation begins on August 20.

And year-rounders, don’t forget to explore the many waterways of Naples with AWE, our watersports team. They will create the perfect adventure just for you! See more in the View newsletter. In the last few years with lifestyle changes, there is a new trend emerging in the Club with more members spending extended “winters” here. This appears to be a preliminary step to an imminent move for many of our snowbird members. Most say it is “very likely” a move to Florida is permanently planned for their future. For a town of its size, Naples has so much to offer, and Southwest Florida is going to be a busy little community in the years to come as we welcome our new Florida Resident members. Thank You! LaPlaya has absolutely the most amazing members ever and it is evident by our member testimonials. 80% of our new members come from existing members referring their friends! Many thanks to all for your referrals! Should you be leaving us for the summer, have a great one! Safe travels! If you’re a year-rounder, we look forward to seeing you often at the Club!

Dear LaPlaya Club Members,

Alan & Beverly Bergstrom

As another great season comes to a close, I want to say thank you for your wonderful support of LaPlaya and our wonderful staff. LaPlaya is truly special and we are honored to have both our members and staff be a part of this family. We have many exciting projects and initiatives that will be taking place at LaPlaya this summer.

Steven & Shannone Buck

Naples was recently once again named one of America’s “Happiest and Healthiest” cities. In an effort to live up to this reputation, both Baleen as well as the Beach Club Dining Room are hard at work becoming Blue Zone certified dining outlets. Our menu offerings will reflect the Blue Zone Project initiative by offering a greater selection of lighter fare, locally grown and certified organic ingredients as well as the option for smaller portions of certain items. We are very excited to take on this important and worthwhile challenge of becoming a Blue Zone Certified establishment. Our most exciting announcement is the renovation of the Beach Club Dining Room! Renovation of the Club Dining Room will begin on Monday, August 20th. The renovation will focus on new furniture, fixtures and décor. The new patio furniture will permit us to accommodate a larger number of guests on the club veranda during lunch and dinner service. An all new lobby will greet members and guests with a greater sense of arrival. We will also be installing wine lockers that will be available as an additional amenity for your LaPlaya membership. In addition to the renovation of the Club Dining Room, the member locker rooms will also be undergoing a renovation during the months of August and September. Renovations for the Club Dining Room and Member Locker Rooms are expected to be completed by October 2nd.

level of exertion. • Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light color; Cotton clothing will keep you cooler than many other synthetics. • Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors.

• Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an air-conditioned house. • Try storing lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator to use on hot, overtired feet. • Keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer; grab one when you're ready to go outside. As the ice melts, you'll have a supply of cold water with you. • Drink plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes, to avoid dehydration. • Some people swear by small, portable, battery-powered fans. At an outdoor event I even saw a version that attaches to a water bottle that sprays a cooling mist. • I learned this trick from a tennis pro: if you're wearing a cap or hat, remove it and pour a bit of ice cold water into the hat, then quickly invert it and place on your head. • Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration. • Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won't have to cook next to a hot stove. • Finally, use common sense. If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don't forget that pets also need protection from dehydration and heat-related illnesses too.

VODKA MINT LEMONADE I have always thought lemonade is such a refreshing, crisp beverage that keeps you cool through the warmer months of the year. Try spiking it with a little vodka for a little bit more flavor! Ingredients 1.5 oz. of your favorite Vodka 1 cup lemonade Fresh mint Sliced strawberries Fresh Lime Ice Combine the vodka, lemonade, half of the strawberries, and half of the mint leaves in a mixing bowl. Muddle until the fruit is slightly mashed. Fill a mason jar or high ball glass with ice. Add the rest of the mint and berries to the glass, then pour in the vodka lemonade mixture over the ice. Garnish with a slice of lime. Enjoy! Cheers, Shelley Johnson & Eric Swaby Club Food & Beverage Managers

Reciprocal season started May 1st and will end October 31st. The list of reciprocal clubs can be found on the club website and copies are available in the Golf Shop. The Golf Club will be closed on Monday’s June through September (except for Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd where the Golf Club will be open on Monday and closed Tuesday, September 4th). There are two weeks during the summer months the Golf Club will be closed for golf course maintenance (June 4th through June 11th and August 20th through August 27th). While the course is closed for maintenance, the golf team will be available to make reciprocal times from 7 to 10 AM. During the summer months, enhancements will be made on the course and to the Practice Facility. The management team will be working on the Schedule of Events for next season and release the dates as soon as possible to allow you to make plans to be here for your favorite events. Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you back here in the fall. Best regards, Ben Bryant, PGA Director of Golf

the club for the next 5 -10 years and beyond as well. This June – September will see a continuation of recovery, and restoration from Irma, with perimeter planting of trees, palm trees, and landscape foliage as a top priority. Turf conditions will continue to be reviewed and improved also, specifically: • The fairway grass on #17 will be fully restored with ‘Celebration’ Bermuda grass. • All 18 collars (Tif-Grande grass) surrounding all 18 greens, and the 3 practice greens too will be restored. • Speaking of practice areas, our main practice bunker will be enlarged and improved. • A new tee will be added on the par 3 hole #15, that will give us added capacity for rotating the tee markers and providing the best turf possible to play from. • Not forgetting the clubhouse areas, the clubhouse patio will have a makeover 2.0 for ‘cool in the shade’ next season. • Behind the scenes, there are other vital capital improvement projects, air conditioning and heating units, new back flow fire protection equipment, a new electrical transformer, and irrigation pump restorations to be carried out. We will address and attack all these important tasks knowing the pay-off will be a golf club prepared and ready for ‘all’ our members to return, share and enjoy. Have a great summer, safe travels to everyone, we’ll see you soon. Yours Aye, Alan Findlay Golf Club Manager

Summertime,

& THE LIVING IS...BUSY! As the majority of our members venture north for the summer and to locations far and near, it’s a fair question to ask, what goes on when we’re ‘slow?’ The answer is, a lot. For starters, we listen to, observe and absorb the feedback from the ‘season’ just completed. We compile a list of priorities for improvement that always has at its core and center, the member experience. From those priorities we plan out the months of June – September especially to be key grass growing, re-planting and clubhouse paint drying times. However it’s more than just grass, plants and paint. Our people have to rest, re-nourish and continue to learn and grow at the same time as well. The challenges of an appropriate work / life balance in today’s ever changing world, are ones we recognize in order to have the very best team in place; fully prepared and engaged once the flag drops for the start of another high season. Hurricane Irma gave us a lot to ponder last September. It was certainly a ‘sea change’ event that left many of us including your club working hard to assess our current condition and to be ready; but it also provided a lot of opportunity for how we will grow and continue to improve LaPlaya Club Newsletter | Vol 94

LAUREL'S CORNER I hear a lot of players talk about having a good round except for two or three bad holes. I have noticed when a player starts to make a couple bad swings in a row, they get quicker and tighter. They try to hurry up and get the next shot done without getting themselves set up. Then it takes them a couple holes to finally take a second to slow down their pace a bit. I have talked about a pre shot routine before. If you don't want to take the time for that, at least take the time to get your target in mind and get the proper alignment before you hit any shot. Breathe and take your time before the next shot. Being mindful of where you are lining up will make a difference in the direction of your golf ball. How many times do you say " I knew I was aiming too far right (or left)" . Step back and throw a club down on your feet line to check where you are aiming. I see so many people talking to their playing partners right up to the point that they swing...having no idea where they are lined up...and do not hit it toward the target. The same with putting. Pay attention to the slope of the green and keep your tempo nice and even. You only have to focus a minute or less for each shot, not the entire 4 hours in a round. Enjoy the process!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT As the winter season winds down for yet another year and the warm summer months are rapidly approaching, the Laplaya Golf Maintenance Department is busy putting together a comprehensive plan for summer maintenance projects and course improvements. First and foremost we will be carrying out multiple aerifications of greens, tees and fairways for control of thatch and organic matter. These summer practices are crucial to maintaining the long term health of the golf course. We will also be undertaking a number of projects that will improve the member experience on the course for this upcoming season. First, we will be regrassing #17 fairway with Celebration Bermuda Grass. This will improve the consistency and quality of the turf over what we currently have. Second, we will be resodding all of the collars around the greens. In some areas this turf has become contaminated with off-type Bermuda grass which results in an inconsistent look and playing conditions. We will also be enlarging the white tee on hole #15 to allow for better divot recovery. We will accomplish this by filling in the low area between the blue/ white tees. Heavy landscape and tree trimming as well as numerous plant additions will also be performed. This will include replanting key trees that were lost due to hurricane Irma. This process will be ongoing throughout the summer months The cumulative effect of this work will set us up to have a fantastic season when the majority of our members and guests return. I look forward to updating all on our progress throughout the summer months. Happy Travels!
