Naila Art Gallery was once a dream for its owner Mrs. Naifa Al Fayez, who is an accomplished artist and interior designer. In early 2013, Naila Art Gallery became a reality when its doors opened to the world in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for artists, travelling exhibitions and other forms of creativity. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has seen a huge change towards the world of arts especially with other art galleries opening around the Kingdom.

Naila Art Gallery is a private initiative that aims to bring to light emerging and established local and international artists by providing spaces for exhibitions that lead to discovery, knowledge and appreciation of the arts. Based on the principle that research leads to knowledge, Naila Art Gallery hopes to offer various platforms to encourage and stimulate of creativity, expression, and exploration. It also offers a wide range of art talks from local and visiting artists and will soon offer educational workshops. It is a place where one seeks to inspire and be inspired. Over the past year, Naila Art Gallery has hosted a number of exhibitions for artists and other forms of artistic expression such as objects and artworks from private collections in and around the region. The gallery aims at establishing strong ties with institutions and artists around the world to promote art and the value it offers to individuals, cultures, and places.

Caroline Havers, currently residing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is a professional artist, born in the Netherlands in 1959. She began her career studying for a degree in Museology whilst taking a number of art courses where she mastered her technique in drawing, painting and etching. Her passion for painting has only increased over the years especially through her love of nature and the many different environments she has travelled and lived in. Through painting she has documented her life. Her work has been exhibited internationally since 2003. Her latest series Sands & Serendipity reflects a year of intense exploration in new desert surroundings. The sands have found a way into the paintings, changing the physicality of Caroline’s artwork. ‫مجموعة األعامل هذه تعبري عن مدى معرفتي بجامل حقيقي ومتيّز موجود بالصحراء العربية ‪ ,‬مع كل التفاصيل والخصوصيات البرصية لسكّانها‬ ‫قصة العفوية والتلقائية يف تواصيل مع الرمال هي نتيجة عالقة نشأت بني ذايت ومساحات الصحراء ‪.‬‬ ‫يف أواخر عام ‪ 2012‬وصلت إىل شبه الجزيرة العربية ‪ ,‬كنت مفتونة ومعجبة جدا للوهلة األوىل حيث الحب الذي شعرت به تجاه تلك املساحات‬ ‫تساءلت دامئاً عن كيفية التواصل مع هذا العامل الجديد ‪ ,‬كل شيئ كان جديد لعيوين ‪ ,‬افتقاري للمعرفة عن هذا الجزء من العامل ‪ ,‬ثقافته وطبيعته‬ ‫الواضحة واملج ّردة ‪.‬‬ ‫بالنظر إىل لوحتي وفرشايت أتساءل كيف ميكنني حرص واختصار كل هذه الصفات املوجودة يف تلك املساحات الصحراوية املثرية من خشونة وقوة‬ ‫وجامل ‪ ,‬يجب عيل العودة إىل البداية ‪ ,‬كمكان جميل للوقوف واستهالك الوقت الكايف الستيعاب ودراسة كل تفصيلة أثارت اهتاممي ‪ ,‬أعطيت‬ ‫لعيني لتقودين حيث الجديد كلياً واملثري حقاً ‪.‬‬ ‫الحرية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫أفق واسعة ومديدة يف اململكة العربية السعودية ‪ ,‬أستفيد منها مبا أفعل ‪ .‬من حيث اتيت من بيئتي كانت القوة والحرفية يف التعامل مع ألواين‬ ‫املستمدة من هناك كدرجات األزرق واحتامالت األخرض املتوفرة دامئاً ‪ ,‬لكن أنا االن يف وسط الصحراء مع كل هذه التدرجات للرتابيات من األلوان‬ ‫كمساحات متتد من البيج إىل البني باختالف حرارته ‪ ,‬إضافة إىل الربتقايل الساطع الذي يلتقي دون إذن مع األزرق الرصيح املستقر يف السامء النقية‬ ‫ذلك التامزج جعل جوهر املوضوع أمامي واضحاً ممتدا ً مجردا ً أكرث ‪.‬‬ ‫ابتدأت بجمع الصور وحرص االنطباعات من خالل السفر يف الصحراء والتفاعل مع عامة الناس و طرح األسئلة كمحاولة الجتذاب واستحضار أكرب‬ ‫قدر ممكن من املعاين و االحتامالت ‪ ,‬يف الدراسات األولية التي عملت عليها أترك نفيس حرة يف تفكيك وتحليل كل ما حصلت عليه من معلومات‬ ‫حول هذا الجامل الجديد ‪.‬‬ ‫مع العمل الجاد وصلت أخريا ً الدراك صيغة معينة وقمت برتجمتها مبفهومي لعميل الفني استنادا ً لثقافتي الخاصة محاول ًة الحفاظ عىل الخصوصية‬ ‫والذاتية للاميض العميل مطروحاً بالرؤية الجديدة التي تتضمن كل املفردات التي درستها ‪ ,‬ديانتي ووسطي املحيط كانا قد هيّئاين لفهم هذا العامل‬ ‫الجديد ‪.‬‬ ‫الصحراء المست بشكل مبارش ذكريايت عن القصص املقدسة التي طاملا عرفتها يف طفولتي خصوصاً تلك التي تتحدث عن الرشق األوسط ‪ ,‬املخيامت‬ ‫التي ذهبت إليها والرحالت والتنقالت الكبرية يف شبايب كل هذا جعلني أشعر بنمط الحياة البدوية ‪ ,‬استحرضت كل هذه املشاعر يف عميل الفني‬ ‫نتيجة االلهام الجديد للصحراء السعودية ‪ ,‬التي قادتني بقوة لالستعانة بأساليب جديدة يف العمل الفني ‪ ,‬مختلفة قليالً عام عرفته وتعاملت معه ‪,‬‬ ‫من مساحات لونية معتادة ومقاسات الريشة ‪ ,‬كل هذا كان يف سبيل البحث عن تجسيد مناسب لكل هذه القوة والحضور للصحراء ‪.‬‬ ‫استخدامي لنوع مميز من القامش ‪ ,‬قامش الخيام الذي كان جافاً ومتعطشاً كان الوسيلة األفضل لرتجمة وتأويل كل تفاعل بيني وبني الصحراء ‪ ,‬كل‬ ‫وصف ممكن لهذا التقشف ‪.‬‬ ‫رغبتي يف وضع الصحراء كلها يف لوحتي جعلني أميل الستخدام املواد الرتابية والطبيعية كاألجزاء الجافة من شجرة النخيل مام ح ّمل السطح أغنى‬ ‫معاين ملوضوعي ‪.‬‬ ‫العفوية أو التلقائية يف االستفادة من كل املواد التي اكتشفتها والسطوح التي عملت عىل بنائها جعلت هناك جرسا ً حقيقياً للتواصل مع بيئتي‬ ‫الجديدة ‪.‬‬ ‫كل العنارص التي كنت موفقة بااللتقاء بها أضافت تحفيزا ً معيناً وتطورا ً لشكل العالقة مع هذه البيئة‪ ,‬حيث سعيت جاهد ًة اليجاد ايقاع يناسب‬ ‫جوهر موضوعي و فكريت ‪.‬‬ ‫أفكاري استقرت لتكون مساحات غنية من االلوان ‪ ,‬الخطوط والسطوح التي كانت جزءا ً مني خرجت لتجد لنفسها مكاناً لالستقرار داخل العمل‬ ‫الفني ‪ ,‬التأثر وفعالية القوى التي تحركني ال تهدأ أو تسكن مبجرد التوقف عن الحركة ‪ ,‬هذه عالقتي بالصحراء االخذة أو الساحرة ‪ ,‬قصة عفوية‬ ‫ملساحات مجردة وواضحة املعاين من الرمال ‪.‬‬ ‫كارولني هافرز‬

This series of paintings is an expression of my inner registration of something really beautiful, the uniqueness of the Arab desert and its people in abstracted visuals. It is the result of a connection, a relationship between desert landscapes and myself; a story of Sands and Serendipity.

In the late summer of 2012, I arrived in the Arab Peninsula. At first sight I was immediately impressed, intrigued, both stunned and confused. I quickly started to fall in love with the landscape.

How can I connect myself to this new ‘other’ world ?

Everything was new to my eyes. My lack of knowledge about this part of the world, its culture, its nature was evident.

Whilst standing in front of my empty canvases and looking at my paintbrush, I was left wondering how I could possibly capture this rugged, harsh, stunningly beautiful new landscape.

I have to put myself back into the place of a beginner, which is actually a nice place to be.

I took my time in absorbing every detail that caught my attention. I let go of the control and allowed my eyes to guide me to what seemed new and exciting.

There are a lot of horizontals in Saudi Arabia, what do I do with them? I had mastered painting lush greens and blues and here I am in the middle of a desert with beige hues, oranges and a crisp clear blue sky.

But who really wants to paint in different shades of beige, I asked myself? Bright orange versus blue for that matter? I realized I needed to start a relationship with my subject matter, but how?

I decided the best way to start was to collect images, gather impressions, travel into the desert, collect data, lean out of the passenger seat in the car and click away with my camera.

I started off by making simple sketches. Talking to the locals, asking questions, I tried to absorb as much I could to gather as much information as possible. I allowed myself to take in this new beauty. By deconstructing, unraveling and analyzing what I have come to learn, I finally begin to internalize and translate the story in my own painting lexicon.

I paint with heart and soul. I tapped into my own culture and drew similarities between my past, my own religious upbringing to help me understand this whole new world.

The desert awoke memories of old biblical stories I used to hear as a child, especially those focused on the Middle East. I remember building tents when I used to go camping, imagining myself having a nomadic lifestyle. Given all the traveling I’ve done as an adult and all the fascinating places I have lived in, I do consider myself, in a way, a modern day nomad. I began to evoke these emotions into my paintings whilst drawing on from my new inspiration of the Saudi landscape.

The desert landscape forced me to use a different approach of painting, one I was unfamiliar with. My stylistic approach, my familiar use of color, the size of my brushstrokes, the type of paint, they no longer apply to this panorama. How do I paint such a rugged harsh landscape was a question I found myself asking often.

On one of my trips to the souk, I came across a unique type of canvas,made from the same material bedu tents are made from. It was a very dry, thirsty, coarse canvas, which best described the desert to me. When I began to paint, I realized that I was often more inclined to use tools, rather than merely paintbrushes, to characterize the austerity of the desert.

I wanted to take the desert and place it onto the canvas, so I used sand and other organic materials such as dried bits of palm tree to create a somewhat uneven surface and texture, in order to truly capture the desert’s temperament.

Serendipity to me was stumbling across objects that stay with me long after I have seen them, they are the thoughts that linger with me. They are the objects that build the bridge between myself and my new environment, objects that help me to connect.

Lucky finds, like a Qibla in the desert, Mary’s Palm, Cistanche Tubulosa, and the fantastic Tarthuth stimulate my relationship with this environment. I managed to find my own rhythm, my own flow so to say, in becoming one with my subject matter.

My thoughts are becoming fields of color; nerves do not end where my hand stops. The lines and strokes on the canvas are a part of me. Stepping out of myself. Hypnotized. This is my connection with the captivatingly beautiful Arabic desert.

This is my story. Creating abstracted visuals of Sands and Serendipity.
