Brief 01 Splendor Pelicula Film Zine A film zine that celebrates the different genres of cinema, including: comedy, cult and musical, and celebrates their contribution to the history of the movie industry.

The Brief Driven in part by my long standing interest in the film industry, this brief combines my illustration skills with editorial layout. With a target audience of more educated film fans the content is detailed and lengthy. However, the visuals remain colourful and minimal to balance out the wealth of information on display. Predominantly publication based, with supporting branding and web material.

Deliverables include three publications dedicated to three genres of cinema, each with its own colour combination and set of icons. Three sets of 18 icons designed specifically for each film detailed in the publications. Three interactive A2 prints, detailing the entire collections of three genres in icon form and 54 individual film A3 posters. A travel size version of the zine, only detailing the 18 films for each collection. Allows for note taking and a more interactive approach. Online content such as a website and a shop to purchase the zine and a range of other merchandise.

The Publications Three 72 page publications tackle three genres of film, with both written information and supporting illustrative elements. The publication itself is designed to be both engaging, informative and visually stimulating. The use of black, white and just one colour is intended to add a sense of continuity throughout.

Each publication is split into three chapters. The first of these gives an insight into the history of each genre. The second focuses on a single, influential figure within each genre. Cult Richard Linklater Musical Vincente Minelli Comedy Judd Apatow Within the second chaper are two illustrations of noted characters from the above directors back catalogue. The third chapter of each issue details 18 of the most renowned films, providing basic information such as cast and characters. It is made more engaging by using large typographic quotes and features the supporting icon.

Individual Posters Having designed icons for each individual film featured in the ‘best of’ chapter of the three issues I applied the designs to a much larger format. The posters themselves would be available for purchase on the ‘Splendor Pelicula’ webpage, allowing fans the opportunity to pick their favourite film from each genre.

Each poster is A3 sized and then folded into an A5 format, making delivery easier and allowing for an interactive product. The posters are double sided prints on 135gsm matte stock. One side displays a large scale version of the icon, the film’s title and the small synopsis found within the publication. The reverse features a repeated pattern of the entire genre’s icon collection, the ‘Splendor Pelicula’ logo and the corresponding colour.

Starring Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron

Starring Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer

Starring Jodi Benson as Ariel

Cady Heron is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa, where she was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the “cool” kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as “the Plastics,” led by Regina George. While Cady is grateful for her new friends, it doesn’t take long for her to realize how manipulative they can be, and she soon discovers she’s violated an unwritten law when she goes out on a date with Aaron, Regina’s former boyfriend.

Veronica mingles with Heather I, II and III to be as popular as them, even though she hates them. She hates them enough to wish they were dead, though she would never want to be their cause of death. When she starts dating Jason Dean, however, she finds herself involved in the murders of most of her enemies, covered up as suicides.

Loosely based upon the story by Hans Christian Andersen. Ariel, the youngest daughter of King Triton, is dissatisfied with life in the sea. She longs to be with the humans above the surface, and is often caught in arguments with her father over those “barbaric fish-eaters”. She goes to meet Ursula, the Sea Witch, to strike a deal, but Ursula has bigger plans for this mermaid and her father.

Icon Collection Posters

the cult collection

Taking the idea of utilising the icons to their full potential. These poster gather the 18 individual icons and display them in a visually engaging manner.

Do you want to know more about film? Not just watch it, but really immerse yourself in the characters, direction and dialogue? Well, stick this handy poster on your wall and tick off the comedy classics as you view them. Not only that, certainly not. With the accompanying stickers found in the pack, you can assign a rating to each movie. That way, you’ll know if any are worth revisiting, or if best left in the past.

The poster themselves are double sided and allow for a personal rating system on the reverse.

You be the critic! Maybe even the next Peter Travers.

Each poster is A2 in size, two colour and double sided on 135gsm matte stock. On one side are the icons with minimal information. However on the reverse are titles of each film, indicating what the icons represent. Also on the reverse are three blank stars, allowing for a personal rating from the film viewer. This encourages the film fan to do more than just watch each feature, but instead to really engage with the subject matter.

american graffiti 1973 It’s the last night of summer 1962, and the teenagers of Modesto, California, want to have some fun before adult responsibilities close in. Among them are Steve and Curt , college-bound with mixed feelings about leaving home; nerdy Terry ‘The Toad’, who scores a dream date with blonde Debbie; and John, a 22-year-old drag racer who wonders how much longer he can stay champion and how he got stuck with 13-year-old Carol in his deuce coupe. As D. J. Wolfman Jack spins 41 vintage tunes on the radio throughout the night, Steve ponders a future with girlfriend Laurie, Curt chases a mystery blonde and Terry tries to act cool, but nothing can stop the next day from coming.

SOME LIKE IT HOT 1959 When two Chicago musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness the the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, they want to get out of town and get away from the gangster responsible, Spats Colombo. They’re desperate to get a gig out of town but the only job they know of is in an all-girl band heading to Florida. They show up at the train station as Josephine and Daphne, the replacement saxophone and bass players. They certainly enjoy being around the girls, especially Sugar Kane Kowalczyk who sings and plays the ukulele. Joe in particular sets out to woo her while Jerry/Daphne is wooed by a millionaire, Osgood Fielding III.

The coloured tabs running along the right hand side of the publication are perferated. These are designed to be removed once the film has been viewed. This will hopefully encourage the person in possesion of the product to view each film, and gain an education into each genre.

To accompany all the printed deliverables I also designed a website that, when operating at full potential, allows for subscribers of the magazine to view digital archives of back issues. The website also allows the purchasing of additional merchandise such as t-shirts and hoodies, all with icon application. The web design is a continuation of the layout found within the publications and uses only the corresponding colour, in addition to black and white.
