The Brief After being encouraged to participate in a collaborative brief for the module I came across the work of Samantha Haythorne.

Her structured, black and white, architectural inspired approach to garment making was something that attracted me, partly due to the complete juxtaposition to my regular work.

Having previous briefs driven by colour and illustration I found this brief particularly challenging, yet rewarding as I proved to myself I can work in more than one way.

Deliverables for the brief include logo design that went on to be applied to a range of printed promotional items.

Tryptik is a brand created by Samantha Haythorne during her BA (Hons) Fashion degree. The brand focuses on blurring the lines of gender and the ever gendering seasons with androgynous styles and contemporary methods of applying texture and manipulating fabric. Due to her interest in tailoring and pattern cutting, the garments she designs and creates are representative of this and showcases her abilities in manipulating the form.

The book itself is a 36 page publication printed on 235gsm matte stock, with tracing paper inserts at the front and back.

If I had known the difficulty this would present at the beginning of the brief I may not have suggested it. However, after struggling with pagination and appropriate page layout I am incredibly pleased with the results.

I bound the book using a basic coptic stitch with black cotton.

I applied cotton fabric along the spine to bring a sense of professionalism and finality to the publication.

Due to nature of the triangular shape, the book stands alone, another advantage of the design.

Having designed a triangular logo, and witnessing Samantha’s affinity for the shape I suggested we continue the theme into her look book.

Swing Tags & Packaging For the final garment collection I was asked to design a set of swing tags for Samantha.

She wanted a continuation of the triangular design, and more than just one flat tag for each swing tag.

She also required some sort of packaging to hold her collection.

The swing tags contained several different elements. Firstly is a laser etched version of the logo on 3mm mirror. Then a layer of tracing paper attached to the tag with all the required written information. Lastly is a single sided print on the silver stock with the collection information.

All the different elements are brought together with a stainless steel chain roughly 200mm in length.

The packaging is composed of a silver bag, with the logo featured on one side.

Finished using black eyelets and black 5mm rope. Inside the bag is a simple black box and personalised tissue paper.

As an alternative to the multipage lookbook that cost a fair amount to print, and a lengthy amount of time to assemble, I also designed a large scale print that folds into trinagular sections.

The double sided mailshot was printed onto 235gsm matte stock.

I was slightly apprehensive about losing the quality of the imagery, but after the first print realised the black and white imagery worked better on matte than on satin or gloss.

The Pattern After designing the original triangle design for the ‘Tryptik’ brand logo, Samantha suggested I design a pattern similar in nature but with a lot more depth.

Something that doesn’t just sit on the page, and instead stands out rather more dramatically.

I decided to take the ‘triangular’ approach and the black and white theme running throughout the collection to design a symmetrical pattern that resembles a distorted diamond of sorts.

The pattern itself was then used by Samantha in her collection. It features on several garments and works incredibly well, especially when used in a panel.

I created the pattern by taking differently cropped sections of a diamond photograph, and then arranging and layering them in a sporadic way.

I edited the original to a black and white image, and increased the brightness and contrast to obscure some of the detail.
