ARTOYZ COLLABORATION : Robyn Makinson X Meryem Meg Why have you chosen to work with your creative partner? What are your aims? I have always admired the illustrative way in which Meryem works, and would love to undertake a brief that allows her to create as many bold, bright patterns as she wants combined with my love of packaging and promotion. I hope that together we can incorporate both our passions and create a resolution that is both well considered and well rounded. I would say that the primary aim is to experiment and have fun, whilst learning in the process and absorbing as much information as possible for me to carry through to the final major project section of the third year.

What are your specific areas of creative interest in this brief? I would love to be solely responsible for the development, experimentation and final designs for the packaging in which the vinyl toys are distributed. I am more than willing to allow Meryem free reign over the designs for the physical toys, and am interested in being as experimental as possible with the actual 3D packaging. I would also like to be included in developing the range of print distribution methods, such as stickers, posters, t-shirts and key rings. I hope to learn how to successfully and professionally use the laser cutter with this project, therefore allowing me to work with materials I have never used before and produce products I have only dreamt about creating.

What specific design skills do you have to offer in relation to your chosen brief? How do you intend to use them? I consider myself to be well versed in the technical aspects of package creation and how things fit together, whether it be successfully or not. I am also more than competent with certain computer programmes, such as illustrator and Photoshop, which will hopefully result in designs that are effective in communicating our message. Additionally I like to draw as many initial ideas as possible, which are then analysed and determined as to which is the best. I also think I am pretty clever with colour choices and combined with Meryem’s illustrations we could create some incredibly impactful designs.

What specific non-design skills do you have to offer in relation to your chosen brief? How do you intend to use them? I consider myself to be somewhat driven and feel as though as I can take the lead when it comes to enquiring about possible creative outlets. For example booking inductions, print times and asking about print processes will perhaps be my responsibility, something I have absolutely no problem with. I also consider my methods of trial and error useful, meaning we will create only the most effective outcomes.

What will you specific roles be in the collaboration in relation to your brief? I will be solely responsible for the design and creation of the packaging. Ranging from initial idea generation to exploring creative possibilities and producing a fully assembled range of packaging that is connected to the designs of the toys. Each one will be visually similar, but slightly different, so as each doll is distinguishable.

What will your joint responsibilities be? Throughout the brief it will be both our responsibility to keep in contact. We will have to consistently update each other with our progression, ranging from the actual designs to how we are going to produce our final resolutions. I’m sure that at some point or another our responsibilities will overlap, resulting in a great dialogue between us, and in turn well realised resolutions. On a simple level, joint responsibilities will be ensuring we are committed to the brief and putting effort in, as well as blogging and documenting our progression. We will also have to share the responsibility of decision making and make sure the decisions made are appealing to us both.
