Welcome!
We are so proud to bring you issue two of Nobu Hotels Magazine. We launched this magazine to share the wonderful world of Nobu with all of you, a place of shared passions, lifelong friendships, and great food. Our first issue was more successful than we ever imagined, and we were so grateful to celebrate alongside many of you at our beautiful Malibu launch. With shared laughter and food, we started a new chapter, a night filled with old friends and new.
The past few months have been full of things worth celebrating, with our family forever growing and changing. We welcomed new beginnings with the announcement of our 30th hotel in our portfolio, a milestone we are so grateful to share. Get to know us a little better in this issue, where we highlight some of our most-loved dishes, tour some of our beautiful properties, and share a few of our recent favorites. Get an exclusive look at our Barcelona and Los Cabos locations, learn about the traditional practices we bring to our hotels, and get some special tips on the best menu pairings at our restaurants. This is an issue about friendship, and we are fortunate enough to have guest editors in Patrick Dempsey and Jessica Alba. With almost three decades since Nobu’s conception, we want to honor the people who make it possible, and in this issue, we take the opportunity to highlight one of the special members of the Nobu team. This journey has been incredible, and I am so proud of everything we have accomplished. Our philosophy is simple: to balance good food and good service, a foundation that represents our team and what we strive to give to everyone who has supported us. We are so happy to bring you along on our journey and hope with this new issue you’ll join us on our quest for quality, tradition, and enjoying all of life’s simple pleasures.

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 53
mbusa.com
When Mercedes-Benz unveiled its first AMG GT 4-door Coupe in 2018, the famed marque hailed it as a “new chapter in driving passion,” melding AMG’s legendary speed and styling with Benz’s unparalleled luxury sedan expertise and driver experience. In the years since, any car bearing the hallowed AMG GT badge has immediately commanded attention. The AMG GT 53 4-door Coupe, with an AMG-enhanced 3.0L inline-6 turbo with EQ Boost and an electric auxiliary compressor, is no exception. The sleek 429-hp supercruiser occupies the center slot in Mercedes-AMG’s GT sedan lineup, between the GT 43 and GT 63, and was selected by Car and Driver as the must-have model among the three, thanks to its perfect balance of power and comfort — all at a shade over six figures. With several options available to tailor the car to each customer’s needs, the AMG GT 53 delivers a true grand tourer experience with that much more space and comfort, something other luxury car brands have struggled to emulate.

McLaren 720S
The 720 in this drop-dead gorgeous supercar’s name refers to Pferdestärke (PS), the metric measure of horsepower, giving a clue to its powerful core. Its 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 delivers 720 PS (about 710 hp) and 568 lb-ft of torque; the blast from 0 to 60 mph takes just 2.8 seconds. It can cover a quarter of a mile in 10.4 seconds flat from a standing start and hit 212 mph on the track. Yet it is also extremely comfortable to drive, more than a car this raptorial has any right to be. We drove one from New York City to Camden, Maine, and the car devoured everything from highway straightaways to windy country roads with verve and command, thanks in part to its advanced suspension. The 720S shows the huge potential of carbon fiber in the hands of McLaren’s designers and engineers. The starting price of just over $300,000 is more than justified from the moment you flip open the dihedral door and the instant you press pedal to metal.
McLaren GT
Faster. Lighter. More useful. McLaren’s most gentlemanly motorcar is an evolution of its street-legal supercar virtuosity, and if anyone ever doubted that McLaren could produce an ultra-competent grand tourer, the GT silenced the skeptics once and for all. Not least because it’s immensely fun to drive, with plenty of McLaren’s proprietary thrills, yet enough polish to ensure that you can just as easily drive it to opening night at the opera as on the track on the weekend. With a smoothly powerful 4.0-liter V-8 that generates 612 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, the McLaren GT offers the ability for design flourishes that might appear out of place on its other cars, including the option for pure cashmere interior details. As the marque puts it, “honed elegance is the design ethos” here, plus ease of operation, making it ideal for road trips. All this and your (bespoke) luggage fits in the back as well. This is a McLaren that could easily serve as a daily driver, should you happen to work at MI6 — or just want to feel like you do.

4911PorscheCarreraGTS Porsche EditionE-HybridPanamera20224Platinum Ask any longtime Porsche 911 aficionado who looks on the iconic sports car as the ultimate year-round daily driver and they’ll likely tell you the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 models are the way to go for ultimate versatility. Then tell them to ignore the price tag, and they’ll immediately request a GTS upgrade. Out of the 22 different 911 models available, the GTS cars — the letters stand for Gran Turismo Sport — are almost as impressive as the holy-grail GT3 when it comes to performance, but they are much more civilized and don’t require moving up to the 911 Turbo, whose fire-breathing ethos isn’t for everyone. The Carrera 4 GTS gets 473 hp from its turbocharged flat six, and, as usual, Porsche manages to make it feel like much more. Roll up to any A-list venue in a 911 GTS and even Ferrari drivers will offer grudging respect. 911 drivers don’t need to prove anything to anybody, but those in the know will smile lasciviously at the oh-so-enviable GTS badge.

With 455 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, thanks to its revolutionary 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with an electric auxiliary motor, this plug-in hybrid is miles ahead of its peers. The Panamera had already proven that Porsche perfection isn’t limited to sports coupes, and while a hybrid version of the 911 is still in the testing phase, the Panamera hybrid is leading the way forward.
Porsche notes that its top-of-line Platinum Edition cars are a “perfect mixture of luxury, comfort features, and exclusive design highlights.” They roll on Satin Platinum-finish 21-inch Exclusive Design Sport wheels, while more satin paint finish highlights abound, including the Porsche Panamera badge on the tail, which enthusiasts will easily recognize. Panamera styling has gotten sharper in recent years, and opting for the Platinum Edition package makes this the ultimate iteration. Just select a drive mode — the choices are E-Power, Hybrid Auto, Sport, and Sport Plus, which really makes the exhaust note pop — press the accelerator, and you’re on your way to pure driving pleasure.
As with the 911, Porsche now offers a GTS (Gran Turismo Sport) trim on all of its cars, and that includes the Macan, which some say is the most fun you can have with five doors and five seats. “Incomparable, unmistakable, and unstoppable,” in Porsche’s words, the Macan is a sports car in compact SUV form, striking the perfect balance for those for whom a smaller vehicle simply wouldn’t be practical. The Macan GTS, which replaces the outgoing Turbo model, is good for 434 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6, kicking it from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.1 seconds. It’s “one of very few crossovers that feels as composed on a racetrack as on the street,” as Car and Driver notes, and its base price of $81,250 seems like a bargain for a vehicle that can truly do it all. The competition will have to look pretty sharp in order to retain customers justifiably drawn to this clear class leader. the

Rolls-Royce Cullinan
The Cullinan is the ur-SUV for those for whom subtlety doesn’t enter into the conversation. Hugely powerful and with a massive road presence that devours everything in its path, it never has to apologize for being the most imposing and expensive SUV on the road. That’s even more apparent with the Black Badge edition, Rolls’ designation for cars that are “darker in aesthetic, more urgent in personality and dramatic in material treatment.” With 592 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque from its purebred V12, the Cullinan Black Badge can leave sports car drivers scratching their heads as it blasts past them, though even in its signature Low gear mode, the pedigreed SUV never needs to raise its voice. Though it technically starts at around $380,000, expect options to boost the price into “if you have to ask” territory. We’ll let Rolls have the last line — as they so aptly put it, this vehicle is “magnetic in attraction; unapologetic in elegance; dominant in performance; unrivaled in capability; and distinctive in design.”

Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid
Bentley has committed to an all-electric future by 2030, earmarking $3.4 billion to do so, and the Flying Spur Hybrid shows that they know what road to take. To endow a vehicle as unapologetically luxurious as the Flying Spur with hybrid efficiency and eco-consciousness is a masterstroke on Bentley’s part, proving they really do have a handle on the evolution of über-luxury sedans, a category that many expected would go the way of the dinosaurs in the electric era. The Flying Spur Hybrid is certainly no slouch, with 536 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque courtesy of its 2.9L twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain. With all-wheel drive and a 0-60 mph clock that’s just a hair slower than its gas-powered V8 sibling, the Flying Spur Hybrid is extremely capable as well, while showcasing the handcraftsmanship that the Bentley team in Crewe, UK, are justly famous for. This is the most fuel-efficient Bentley ever made, but the word compromise just doesn’t exist in its considerable vocabulary.
BMW X3 M Competition
When it comes to performance-oriented luxury cars of the sort that can be driven every day, BMW’s M models have long been the gold standard, showing an unwavering commitment to offering its customers race-developed upgrades across all platforms. So leave it to the Bavarian marque to refute the notion that compact-SUV buyers aren’t interested in this advantage — a BMW is still a BMW, after all. Hence, the X3 M Competition, which takes the already impressive M standard to the next level, is something of a 500-plus hp hot rod in crossover clothes. If the thrill is in the chase, this is your chase car par excellence. Capable of 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds, it’s bound to leave its rivals, even those from ostensibly more sports-oriented brands, wondering what just happened when it rockets past. And at just under $70,000, it’s a compelling value proposition, to boot. Look for order books to fill up pretty damn quickly.

If you prefer your German stealth speedsters in open-top form, the M8 Competition Convertible is the pinnacle driving experience. As with the X3, BMW hews to the notion that any M car should also have a Competition option, for those who want the very best that money can buy — as long as it has the iconic BMW roundel on the bonnet. The car’s 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine delivers a pulse-pounding 617 hp, truly making a supercar in its most civilized guise, especially as the front grille is a bit less aggressive than some of the brand’s recent efforts. If the words competition and convertible have never featured together even in your most fevered dreams, this is the one that will have you wondering why no one ever thought of it before. BMW has also gone above and beyond with the car’s interior finishes, and with the addition of the BMW Individual program you can make it even more one-of-a-kind.

As if Sam Heughan weren’t busy enough, his spirits company is now soaring to new heights. With a whisky and tequila under his belt, the sky’s truly the limit for this Scot. His whisky, The Sassenach, is aged and blended in the Scottish Highlands, where the water is pure and firm oak is watched over by ancient peaks. Sassenach is an old Gaelic word that historically meant “outsider.”
The Sassenach Spirit Of Home edition (a collaboration between Master Blender Michael Henry and Heughan) is crafted from carefully selected single malts aged between 9 and 12 years. Then, the infusion of a 20-year-old organic single-grain Scotch whisky adds a delicate sweetness and brings out the more subtle flavors. When you sip the Sassenach Spirit Of Home, expect to be greeted by a “hug in a glass” that evokes the familiar warmth of home, wherever you are, Heughan says.

Santiago Rodriguez is part of what makes Nobu the company it is, a team of hardworking, kind, dedicated people willing to learn and grow, both individually and together. With over 25 years of experience within the company, there is no man better suited for the job. “If you look into the clients’ phones, on their contact I don’t appear as Santi Rodriguez, it says Santi Nobu,” he smiles.
In 1998, Santiago Rodriguez moved to London and started working as a Bartender at Nobu. Over two decades later, he returned to Spain to open the Nobu Hotel Barcelonawith 25 years as a part of the Nobu family under his belt. Since his start at Nobu London, Rodriguez (or ‘Santi’ as he’s known by friends), has been an integral part of the Nobu team, with experience in almost every aspect of the company. “I am very lucky that I found my passion for hospitality at a very early age (I started bartending at 15),” explains Rodrguez, “I decided to put my heart into learning the business from inside out. I moved to London to learn English and live a new experience, and I got a job as a housekeeper. A year later, a friend told me that Nobu down the road was looking for a bartender,” he laughs, “ I had no idea what Nobu was, but it was nearby, so I went for an interview. I got hired -with the condition that I would take English lessons- and the rest is history…”
Since then, Santi has worked in Paris as a Bar Manager, in Miami as the Director of Beverage company-wide, as the Director of Operations for Nobu Restaurant Worldwide, and now a venture into the Hospitality Divison. “I am very proud of being part of Nobu since the beginning,” he reveals, “I’ve seen the company grow from two to fifty restaurants and thirty hotels.” From Palo Alto to Paris, Santi has learned the ins and outs of all things Nobu, giving him a unique perspective that informs his current role. I ask how his background in the restaurant side of the business will affect his role as the incoming General Manager for Nobu Hotel San Sebastián, opening in 2023, and he explains, “A deep knowledge of the brand is half the job, and the most important thing is teamwork. Always surround yourself with the best. [the restaurants and the hotels] share the same philosophy. There is the same care for the guests and the team, and the same quality of service.”

Nobu Hotels Celebrates Santiago Rodriguez, the Incoming General Manager for Nobu Hotel San SebastiÁn, for 25 Years of Impeccable Service
For Santi, Nobu is a team, and one he is proud to be a part of. I ask him what makes Nobu so special and he answers with thoughtful consideration, “the strong sense of family. Everyone from owners to principals and managers is so approachable and always ready to help,” he explains, “Nobu has allowed many people to live experiences that, at least in my case, I would never experience otherwise, and as employees, we can never forget that all of this comes from a man who one day decided to become a sushi chef, and despite all the adversity and troubles on his path, he always tried his best and he never gave up.”

Founded in 2004, this relatively young brand located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland only produces around 180 timepieces annually, ranging in price from around $203,000 to well over $1M. At 42mm in titanium, this 33-piece limited edition GMT Sport wears as though it was specifically sculpted for your exact wrist. One of the first things you’ll notice upon picking up one of these GMT Sports is just how ultra-light, yet solidly built they are. Then your eyes begin to soak in all the little details, such as that beautifully sculpted globe, the crazy amount of depth to that almost oceanic blue dial, the gentle arch the hour & minute hands have to them as they ever so gracefully extend away from the titanium bridge you see coming up from the bottom of the dial. Possibly the most mind-blowing feature of all though must be the downward camber the crystal has when looking at the timepiece from any angle. It has this almost sensual curve that instantly takes your eyes around the bezel and down into the dial. Whether you’re rocking it on the supple rubber strap or that brilliantly finished titanium bracelet (a $50,000 upgrade), this 100m water resistant world-time watch is perfectly suited for summer/vacation life!

Like yacht building or manufacturing supercars, many of these smaller independent watchmakers strive to differentiate themselves through their own flair and uniqueness of the craft. This is achieved using complications such as tourbillons, minute repeaters, dead-beat seconds, but also by implementing the highest levels of finishing on their movements which is extremely tedious, difficult, and time consuming. We’re not necessarily talking about mainstream brands such as Rolex, Omega, IWC, but rather we are mostly focusing on watchmakers or ateliers who produce fewer than 1,000 timepieces per year.
De Bethune DB28GS Grand Bleu
Being able to blend the worlds of traditional and modern watchmaking is no small feat, yet De Bethune does this seamlessly with timepieces such as the DB28GS Grand Bleu. Based in La Chaux, Switzerland and producing fewer than 250 timepieces per year, De Bethune really separates itself through incredibly unique designs as well as the use of materials such as heat-blued titanium. The DB28GS Grand Bleu is a remarkable 100m water resistant sports watch, with a 44mm titanium case, articulating lugs that flex with the wearer's wrist, a dive bezel, and an internal lighting system that is activated by depressing the button on the case at 6 o’clock. The most impressive part of this lighting feature is that there is no battery, it’s completely mechanical! The internal dynamo motor is powered off the mainspring running the movement of the timepiece.

Francois-Paul Journe founded his brand in 1999 in Geneva, Switzerland and produces between 800 & 900 timepieces per year ranging from simple time only pieces, up to grand complications such as perpetual calendars, tourbillons, and minute repeaters. With its beautifully crafted 42mm platinum case, enchanting full platinum bracelet, the F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Vertical effortlessly flows around the wrist while catching the light perfectly. This exceptional timepiece is known for its rarity and incredible beauty. The layout of the dial is so perfect and symmetrical, with time displayed on the right, small seconds below, power reserve at the top, and that breathtaking tourbillon to the left. You won’t be wearing this F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain in the water, but it’s perfectly at home 3 decks up on the likes of an Amels 180 superyacht moored in Monaco enjoying the Grand Prix and glass of The Macallan.

Nobu Hotels brings a traditional meditative Japanese bathing ritual to its properties with a zen new package aimed at reconnecting with oneself.

THE ART BATHINGOF
NOBU HOTEL Barcelona 84

NOBU HOTEL Los Cabos
he Japanese are known for their special centuries-old traditions, from artistic techniques to tea ceremonies and even bathing. Nobu Hotels is once again tapping into its Japanese roots with an Art of Bathing package.
T
The bathing ritual package is inspired by onsens, which are natural hot springs in which the Japanese bathe. Bathing practices date back to the sixth century as a Buddhist water-purification ritual, and in Japanese culture, the purpose of bathing is to rid oneself of impurities through a unique two-step cleansing and soaking process, which renews, relaxes, and revitalizes the body and soul. Bathing and body care are viewed as transformational and soul-shifting experiences that lead to a more serene life. In Buddhist culture, water symbolizes purity, clarity, and calmness. It acts as a reminder that you can cleanse both your physical body and your mind by practicing water rituals.
NOBU HOTEL Palo Alto
“No matter which hotel you stay at to experience the Art of Bathing package and embrace this cultural Japanese tradition, expect incredible views and a complete pampering session that will revitalize your body and mind.”

NOBU RYOKAN MALIBU
most of our Nobu Hotels have the Japanese teakwood soaking tubs: Barcelona, Chicago, Los Cabos, Malibu, Palo Alto & Warsaw
Luckily, Nobu offers this unique bathing experience in the comfort of your own suite — and no detail has been left behind, from the luxury custom bath salts to the thoughtful welcome amenities. At Nobu Ryokan Malibu, after checking into your Suiheisen Suite, you will be welcomed with green tea and delicious matcha cake to enjoy before your bath. Before your soak, don’t forget to light the outdoor candles and pop open your complimentary bottle of Champagne to sip on. You can even request special bath salts, courtesy of Detox Market, for the ultimate de-stressing experience. A complimentary take-home bag of bath salts allows you to re-create the experience at home. The tub overlooks the Pacific Ocean, and your bathing ritual will feature the sound of lapping waves to lull you into a meditative state.
If you want to visit both Nobu Ryokan Malibu and Nobu Hotel Palo Alto, book the Ryokan Retreat Experience: You’ll receive two nights at each property, plus private jet transport between the two, in partnership with Schubach Aviation. The jet will fly you between Van Nuys and San Jose, along with a private car transport to each of the hotels. Other perks include a wine tasting, an omakase dinner for two, a virtual one-hour session with a Malibu Fit concierge, and wellness turndown amenities, daily breakfast, and more. Book the experience at both properties to reap the rewards of various views and an even deeper sense of inner calm. Wellness experiences at Nobu are second to none, and the concierge will help you set up a wonderful cycling tour in Palo Alto or private yoga or fitness classes in Malibu.
87
If you’re more into mountain views, opt for Nobu Hotel Palo Alto. Located in Silicon Valley, the hotel is surrounded by the Santa Cruz Mountains. Here, you will check into a Ryokan Suite (there are three) on the top floor of the hotel, offering only the best mountain and city views. The Ryokan Suites feature deep soaking teak tubs and walk-in showers for the ultimate cleansing experience. When booking the package at this location, exclusive amenities include a chef’s choice bento box to enjoy before or after your soak, as well as your choice of custom Nobu bath salts in lavender or eucalyptus.
Japanese bathing is like an art, with specific steps you must follow to get the most out of the practice. The first step in the traditional ritual is to shower before getting into the tub to rinse off any physical dirt from your day. In Japanese culture, when people bathe together in onsens, this step is considered considerate of others and allows for a cleaner and more relaxing bathing experience. The next step is soaking in the tub — traditionally, a small circular yet deep teak soaking tub — for pure relaxation and enjoyment. The water is hot, and it’s often recommended you get out and cool off by showering before entering the bath again. Despite traditions, there is no one way to bathe, as long as you are able to fully relax and enjoy the soak.
Both packages include Detox Market bath salts, a face serum by Be Here + Farm, a Slip Sleep Mask, complimentary Champagne, daily breakfast for two, and priority reservations at Nobu Restaurant on the property. No matter which hotel you stay at to experience the Art of Bathing package and embrace this cultural Japanese tradition, expect incredible views and a complete pampering session that will revitalize your body and mind.

With spacious, light-filled studios, the Nobu Pilates experience is bright, exciting, and as challenging as you need it to be. With a group studio boasting 10 reformers, towers, and Pilates chairs to allow an impressive variety of exercises, plus a second studio specifically dedicated to private sessions, the location is hard to beat. A workout that Lindsay explains is “totally inclusive,” this Pilates experience is built for everyone. “It is a full-body workout that promises to deliver the ultimate blend of strength, stability, and flexibility,” says Lindsay. “Whether you are new to fitness, striving towards a strength goal, rehabilitating an injury, or wanting to continue working out during pregnancy, there is something to support every need and limitation.”
Nobu Hotels signature pilates program is revolutionizing wellness in the luxury travel space.
Offering a first-of-its-kind approach, the signature Nobu Pilates at the new Nobu Hotel London Portman Square is the solution to prioritizing health and wellness in the luxury hotel sphere. Spearheaded by Creative Director Marsha Lindsay to create a workout unique to Nobu, this incredible program will keep you active and balanced — even during hectic travel days. We sat down with Lindsay to get the inside scoop on all things Nobu Pilates — who can do it, why we love it, and how the program compares to more traditional Pilates methods.
Built on Lindsay’s foundation of 10 years of experience in the classical Pilates world, Nobu Pilates is designed to help you achieve your personal fitness goals while incorporating a range of different workouts. “Nobu Pilates classes are unique because the ethos is that Pilates make anything else you do better,” says Lindsay. “You should not have to decide on a category…. You can do it all, and Pilates will help you stay strong enough to do so.” With three signature classes, POWER, PRECISION, and PURE, visitors can now engage in a workout completely unique to Nobu Pilates and built to cater to individual goals.. Immerse yourself in the traditional Pilates approach in the PURE class, where you can explore the equipment and techniques the way founder Joseph Pilates intended. Take a PT-influenced class in PRECISION, in which sets and reps are highlighted and specific muscle groups are targeted to achieve focused, fast results. For those looking to experience the ultimate Nobu Pilates experience, try POWER, a high-energy cardio version of Pilates designed to build strength and endurance. “Pilates can be a little intimidating for new starters,” explains Lindsay. “When creating these three classes, I wanted potential clients to look at our list and find something that they relate to in their current fitness regimen and find their ‘in.’ For example, a CrossFit fan might be attracted to the intensity of a POWER class, whereas a mindful mover would probably steer towards PURE. Whichever is the chosen path, the hope is they enjoy and engage with the class, then explore the other concepts during their next visit, — therefore achieving the full Pilates experience.”
Tone It Up
With a background in luxury fitness and years spent training at respected studios, Lindsay noticed a lack of attention paid to wellness and training offerings at luxury hotels, something that Nobu aimed to remedy at the Portman Square destination. “Everything aligned perfectly when Nobu Hotel London Portman Square approached me with an opportunity,” she explained. “We all understood this had the potential to be a unique and progressive offering. Nobu’s position as a luxury lifestyle brand with a minimalist approach to high quality fits extremely well with Pilates.”

Designed to be accessible to anyone, Pilates is considered unmatched for gaining a deeper understanding of the body. With work towards improving posture, creating balance, and improving strength, every session will have you feeling better aligned and with a stronger mind and body connection. Explaining why she recommends Pilates over other fitness methods, Lindsay says, “Pilates is incredible, as it promises to improve mobility, flexibility, strength, and breath work. Pilates is a mindful movement; connecting the mind and body is the most empowering feeling.” Visit the London Portman Square hotel and treat yourself to a fitness experience like no other. With new openings in other Nobu locations, pop-ups, and the first retreat on the horizon, Nobu Pilates is just getting started!

Behold the Next Generation McLaren
BY JOSEPH E. JUREWICZ

The all-new Artura is not only capable of being track ready, but also a daily driver with neon-bright, attention-grabbing vibes that true supercars tout.
A
“Artura is the pure distillation of our collective expertise and experience. It’s the next generation McLaren,” says Paul Walsh, McLaren Group Executive Chairman.
s a child, few cars inspire us to dream, to imagine driving a piece of machinery so fast it elicits an instant smile, like a roller coaster after the first drop: just watching one roll by increases your heart rate. McLaren has always been one of those dream cars, and, lucky for us, it has unveiled its latest model. The greatly anticipated “Artura” does not disappoint. McLaren exploits its rich racing history with a persistent focus on pushing the limits of race innovation. For the Artura, McLaren certainly delivers the next generation of racing innovation to production lines that are road legal.
107
McLaren has pioneered a new High-Performance Hybrid Supercar, delivering the power that drivers have grown accustomed to in an evolved model with modern efficiencies that boost performance. This is McLaren’s first expression of a six-cylinder hybrid electric engine improving the power-toweight ratio, which was developed in-house, distilled from the lessons McLaren learned in Formula 1. This dynamically optimizes efficiencies from the ground up and is aligned with McLaren’s relentless pursuit of delivering lighter-weight elements. While fewer cylinders are present, McLaren still delivers power with 663hp and 527 lb-ft of torque through the e-motor’s instant torque generation, enabling throttle response twice as fast as standard combustion engines. The Artura brilliantly transitions seamlessly from the e-motor to the V6 combustion engine to deliver maximum output when necessary. Its energydense lithium ion battery is contained within a carbonfiber safety cell for optimum weight distribution and protection. An 80% charge takes just 2.5 hours, with dynamic charging ability on the move. Moreover, McLaren delivers the ability to travel in electric-only urban mode, which many other supercar hybrids cannot do. Petrolheads, rest easy: The Artura still commands respect from the symphony bellowed from the exhaust notes and throws you back firmly into the custom-designed seats.
Pirelli Cyber Tyres provide real-time data on temperature and pressure to the car and driver — crucial for safety on and off the track. The Cyber Tyre application on McLaren Artura is a world first that has never been experienced by anyone before, delivering feedback fit for modern driving. These tires paired with the 10-spoke super-lightweight forged titanium liquid metal rims are a perfect match.
Nobu Hotels Magazine was excited to debut the McLaren Artura at the magazine’s launch party at Nobu Ryokan Malibu on June 21, 2022.
McLaren’s Carbon Fiber Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) at its core is all new, meaning the Artura is a completely original model framework, while still boasting traditional McLaren features, such as the speedmark headlamps and carbon-fiber custom chassis. The Artura has been sculpted with deliberate intent to harness the most amount of airflow dynamics, from hidden door inlet ducts to rear buttresses that channel air through the body. The sculpted “feel” is made possible by cutting-edge carbon-fiber expertise and advanced superforming techniques employed by McLaren. The design, lower center of gravity, and airflow engineering yield the appropriate downforce to corner as if on rails.

The Artura is balanced with exquisite attention to detail, engineered with driver-focused technology providing the power to fully customize the drive experience from the driver’s seat. Rich leather blends harmoniously with the carbon-fiber iconic Speedmark steering wheel, backlit by the clean and intuitive infotainment design that delivers next-level driving details. The best feature is that you can customize your McLaren to suit your inner child’s desire.

Technical Specs: Looks The aggressive stance of the custom McLaren Carbon Fiber Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) design will captivate any onlooker. Warning: It may get speeding tickets while parked.
Interior and Comfort
The cabin size offers ample space for the driver and passenger. McLaren provides full range of control for driver calibration at your fingertips for a custom experience. McLaren also delivers elegance in simplicity with carbon features and includes the all-new HD touch screens enabled for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Utility Truly, the McLaren Artura is a practical supercar that can complete a Sunday drive without the nuisance of multiple fill-ups. The Artura boasts the ability to travel in electric-only urban mode.
Overall Make no mistake: This is a true McLaren, an aggressive performance machine that can also pass as a daily driver that’s easier on the wallet at the pump.
Performance McLaren delivers in the power department, and Artura power statistics make the case. However, the 0-to-60 figures are lower than expected. McLarens are not meant to be driven in a straight line; they are driven for overall performance, and the Artura delivers with pedigree.

With its brand-new seventh generation of the iconic 7 Series, BMW has once again shaken up the world of luxury executive sedans. Not least because the famed Bavarian automaker is rolling out both fully electric and gasoline-powered versions of the car at the same time. What might be even more surprising is that the electric version, dubbed the i7, doesn’t look any different — thereby doing away with the notion that electric cars have to be somewhat odd in appearance to be taken seriously. And taken seriously the new 7 Series certainly will be. We spoke with Christopher Weil, head of BMW Exterior Design, and Michael Baxley, Product Manager for BMW of North America, about the sublime new ride.
The BMWnew7Series is a sublime ride.
How is BMW differentiating itself and pulling ahead of the competition with cars like the new 7 Series?
Baxley: “The new 7 Series offers customers a class-leading driving experience, elegant design, superior comfort, and the latest technology in a package with no compromises. When you look at the BMW i7, there really is no other electric car on the road that can offer the level of luxury that the i7 offers in this segment. Take the BMW Theater Screen as an example; we are the first OEM to put a 31-inch screen with up to 8K resolution in the rear seat of a car. The experience is unlike anything else.”
Weil: “The main sources of inspiration were luxury goods and the world of luxury in general, which the 7 Series customer appreciates and seeks as part of his or her lifestyle. This is also where the design character was derived — a guiding principle for the design and development process of the new BMW 7 Series.”
Weil: “Absolutely intentional. The upright front and clean design reflect the pinnacle status of the product. The upright — BMW-typical — greenhouse reflects the spacious rear seating. And there was a conscious decision to give the top-of-theline models a special ‘signature’ look: a new arrangement of grill and headlights to distinguish the products from the rest of the BMW portfolio.”
Baxley: “We find that one of the most important elements of creating a truly luxurious experience is catering to customers’ needs without forcing them to compromise in any way. This is why the 7 Series is offered with a variety of powertrains, ranging from a twin-turbo V8 to a fully electrified model. The 760i xDrive and the i7 xDrive60 have identical power outputs at 536 hp. They have identical greenhouses and feature sets. They also have the same outstanding interior and technology. Our vision of luxury hasn’t changed dramatically, but we see that our customers now have a higher focus on sustainability, which is why the i7 is such an important car for BMW.”
The new 7 Series seems to hew to a more traditional aesthetic than some of BMW’s recent, more polarizing designs. Is this an intentional retrenchment?
What is BMW’s approach to luxury in the current era with cars like the new 7 Series? How has BMW’s vision of luxury evolved?
What were some of the design inspirations behind the new 7 Series?
111
112
What was behind the decision to offer both a gas-powered and an electric version of the car? Is it a case of hedging bets? What are the main differences between the two versions, aside from their powertrains?
113
How do you honor the legacy of an iconic model like the 7 Series while making it as up-todate technologically as possible? What were some of the challenges involved?
Weil: “The new 7 Series is BMW’s pinnacle product. As such, it has been designed with greatest awareness to BMW’s history and DNA. At the same time, design icons such as the kidney and double round headlights, just to mention two of the design elements, have been interpreted in new ways and are supported by the latest high technology. Challenges, very positively solved, included smooth integration of Swarovski crystals into the headlights, and finding the right cut to gain a brilliant spectral reflection. Also the smooth and seamless integration of the BMW Theater Screen into the roof structure/ceiling of the car; and the smooth and almost ‘invisible’ integration of battery cells without compromising the silhouette and elegance of the vehicle.”
Baxley: “BMW wants to provide its customers a choice, allowing them to decide which best suits their respective needs and lifestyle. BMW looks to offer the best of both worlds when it comes to powertrains in the 7 Series. The powertrains are the key differentiator. One being the fully electric BMW i7, the other offering customers the option of a gasoline engine. Both models are offered with the same options and the highest level of comfort using the highest quality of materials. BMW also offers its customers the most high-tech features, including technology such as 5G, active drive assist technology, and also the first ever Theater Screen for rear seat passengers.”
How would you describe the 7 Series customer? How has the car been specifically tailored to their needs and desires?
Baxley: “The 7 Series customer is established, uncompromising, and a leader in their field. Typically, these customers tend to skew a little more male and are in their mid-50s. They like to treat themselves to the finer things in life, including fine dining and luxury travel, but are also very mindful of their personal health and well-being. The 7 Series, with a bold and modern exterior design, technologically advanced features, and a peaceful, ultra-comfortable interior, complements their lifestyle. With available massage seats, BMW MyModes, and the Driving Assistant Professional with Highway Assistant, 7 Series passengers will arrive at their destination relaxed and ready to take on their next challenge. For those who are focused on sustainability, the i7 xDrive60 offers 318 miles of emission-free electric driving.”

Warsaw is known for its musical artists as much as its visual ones, so take time to explore the life and work of composer Frédéric Chopin, one of the city’s most famous sons. Hear some of his most noteworthy — and often both melancholy and euphoric — compositions played by musicians at the Warsaw Chamber Opera. Learn more about the virtuoso’s life at the Frédéric Chopin Museum. Next, head to the Praga-Południe district’s Neon Museum, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the Cold War era’s neon signs. Often called “the most Instagrammable place in Warsaw,” it’s a feast for the eyes. The illuminated collection tells the story of the unlikely surge of creative expression amidst Soviet propaganda and oppression. See works by contemporary artists at Galeria Grafiki i Plakatu and take a piece — either an original or a print — home to commemorate your trip. Round out the inspiring experience at Weles Bar, where each beautifully composed cocktail is a work of art in its own right.

Find some peace while you wander. Start by getting a sense of the city’s history — and its incredible resurgence — in Old Town. Dating back to the 13th century and deliberately obliterated by the Nazis to crush the spirit of the Polish people, it’s considered one of Europe’s best reconstructions, complete with brightly colored buildings and statues of national heroes. Get away from the hustle and bustle at Lazienki Park, Warsaw’s largest park at nearly 200 acres. It’s easy to get lost while taking in the views, including the Palace on the Water, built as a palatial summer home for Poland’s last monarch. Relax in its manicured gardens and tree-shaded spots to sit and take it all in. Next, head for Bulwary Wiślane, a walking, biking, and hiking path that winds along the glittering Vistula River. Finally, fuel up with farm-to-table vegan dishes that are as good for you as they are beautiful at Eden Bistro

While you’re there, drop into Mo 61 Perfume Lab to create a custom scent with a fragrance master. Continue your day of retail therapy at Mysia 3, a three-story converted tenement building in the heart of the city, to score apparel, jewelry, and art sold in an industrial atmosphere. Being inside the city limits doesn’t mean you can’t find an adrenaline rush. Feed your need for speed at Kartingowy Narodowy, Warsaw’s first and only asphalt karting track. Everyone from novices to pros can zoom around the serpentine path with skyscraper views as a backdrop. Next, suit up at Fly Spot Indoor Skydiving where an ultra-high-speed wind tunnel gives adventurous guests the sensation of flying without having to actually jump out of a plane. While you’re there, try your hand at piloting a Boeing 737 in the facility’s full-size simulator of the 80-ton aircraft in striking 4K resolution. Finally, take to the slopes at Capital Ski in Gorka Szczesliwicka, an indooroutdoor destination for skiing and snowboarding. Get the complete winter experience with and without snow (aided by high-tech water vaporizers for smooth turning and sliding). Beginners can take lessons with expert instructors.
Warsaw’s food scene goes well beyond sausages and cabbage, thanks to a bevy of talented chefs and creative restaurateurs. Get the lay of the culinary landscape at Sakebar by Nobu, a new supper-bar experience where guests are treated to Japan’s signature drink in both traditional and modern ways. Served in silver chiroris, wooden masus, and modern carafes, drinks at this 55-seat venue are as captivating as the space itself. Enjoy signature cocktails like the Hajikami Martini - crafted from Japanese ginger marinate - with pairings from the Nobuinspired tapas menu. Try bites of black cod and wasabi croquettes while you soak in the sultry, magnetic atmosphere; Sakebar melds Japanese tradition with the vibrant Warsaw nightlife to create something truly magical.

The Premiere of Nobu Hotel London Portman Square
To officially celebrate the opening of Nobu’s newest London outpost, Nobu’s three founders — chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper — hosted an evening to remember. The impeccable hotel provided a backdrop of elegant glamour, and a star-studded guest list made for a celebration in style. To usher in good fortune and a harmonious future, the founders held a traditional sake ceremony, a Japanese ritual called kagami biraki that dates back to the fifteenth century. With heartfelt speeches and a toast to luck, health, and happiness, the trio kicked off the night with the ceremonial opening of an extraordinary barrel of sake served in signature masu cups. The night commenced with fabulous spirits, live music, and — obviously — unforgettable canapes. With live music from Japanese Taiko drummers to enhance the mood, we partied the night away at the iconic new property in Portman Square. Guests buzzed about bites of caviar-topped yellowtail sashimi and green tea macarons as we mingled with old friends and new, the perfect way to celebrate the new space. With minimalist Japanese design, this expansive 249-room stay is the epitome of Nobu glamour. Open spaces, immaculate ambiance, and fabulous art pieces make Nobu Hotel London Portman Square deserving of a celebration to impress. We danced, we laughed, we drank Champagne, and we embraced old traditions and new beginnings at this incredible evening — definitely one for the books!

We’ve searched (and tasted!) far and wide for some of the most delicious food-anddrink pairings at Nobu restaurants globally — and we’ve found the best of the best. Our recommendation to close out summer is at the impeccable new Nobu Santorini, a Grecian paradise on one of the most captivating islands in the world. Indulge in magical surroundings and treat yourself to our most recent favorite: A Summertime Sadness cocktail paired with a Nobu classic dish, the Yellowtail Jalapeño. The ideal mix of flavors and fresh ingredients, this meal complements the gorgeous Santorini surroundings seamlessly. With a rich bourbon base and a fragrant lavender addition, this brightly complex cocktail is lightened by cucumber and egg whites to create a concoction that we can’t get enough of. Balance this delicious beverage with bites of the iconic Yellowtail Jalapeño — it’s beloved for a reason. Synonymous with Nobu, this raw course combines fresh yellowtail with tangy ponzu sauce and a welcome crunch with thinly sliced jalapeño layered on top. A touch of citrus marries the spicy punch in a melt-inyour-mouth bite that will have you hooked. Sit back and sip while you soak in the island’s extraordinary sunsets and ocean views; the delicious dish, vibrant cocktail, and beautiful atmosphere at Nobu Santorini will create a cherished memory for years to come.
