he Biosphere Reserve has many facets: old traditions that are kept alive, gently sloping meadows, wild landscape and especially the incredible diversity of the region. A rarity in the Alps. The high plateau of the Lungau region with a size of nearly 1000 square kilometers belonged to the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum in the 2nd century BC. During the course of its turbulent history, the Lungau has gradually developed into a valuable cultural landscape, where one can live and truly enjoy life. In winter you can enjoy the perfect holiday or discover the enchanting landscape on a snowshoeing tour. In summer you can choose among numerous sports and recreational activities, such as hiking or mountain biking. The Carinthian Nockberge are characterized by their unique shape with gentle hilltops - a peculiarity in the Alps. While in summer, lush meadows and well-kept trails invite hikers and mountain bikers, in winter perfectly groomed slopes offer you the perfect condition for skiing. Special attractions are the Nockalm road leading right through the reserve, a summer toboggan run, the Karlbad, thermal baths & swimming lakes. Tip: Experience traditional crafts in one of the many mountain huts. Specially trained rangers and mountain guides can take you on tours and explain the region to you. Explore the region on your own and visit one of the various museums. Sample the culinary diversity and take a trip on a steam train. Enjoy hearty snacks and regional delicacies in one of the many mountain huts of the region. Taste the famous Eachtleng - as the Lungau potato is popularly known - or tasty Kasnudel & traditional Ritschert. Your palate will thank you! Sumptuous and tasty food, this is the best country fare.
