NODA Year End Award Descriptions TROPHIES for RECOGNIZED & UNRECOGNIZED (Schooling) SHOWS The Joan Rapp Trophy given by Gail Patton in memory of Joan Rapp, founding president of NODA, who taught at Red Raider for many years. It is awarded to the horse trained and ridden by a non-professional who best demonstrates that dressage training benefits a horse in all disciplines. In addition to sending one (1) score each from three (3) different judges (from Recognized, NODA or NODA approved schooling shows), evidence of winning three (3) ribbons (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) in one or more riding disciplines other than dressage must be submitted. Driving classes may count. If combined training results are included, placing must be from the entire event, not just the dressage phase. Classical Dressage only.

Gretchen Singleton Vintage Trophy given by Kathy Dennis and Sally Gries in honor and memory of Gretchen Singleton, is awarded to the high scoring amateur rider who was 50 years of age or older when scores were earned. Award is based on one (1) score each from four (4) different judges from Recognized or Unrecognized competitions and can be a combination of scores from multiple levels. Birth date must be submitted. Classical Dressage only.

The Gallant Lad Trophy given by Margaret McElhany of Valley Riding, Inc. recognizes the outstanding performance by the vintage horse (15 years or older) shown by the same or multiple riders (AAs or Junior/Yrs). Scores may come from any Recognized Dressage Competition, or NODA Schooling Shows.

Award is based upon one (1) score each from three (3) different judges at any level of competition. Scores from different levels of competition may be combined. A copy of registration papers or a letter stating the horse’s age must be submitted with the scores. Classical & Western Dressage.

The Sindarin Trophy given by Dale Lappert in memory of her Thoroughbred stallion Sindarin.

Awarded to the Thoroughbred or half-Thoroughbred horse with the highest average based on one (1) score each from four (4) different judges at any level at Recognized dressage competitions, or NODA Schooling Shows. Scores from different levels of competition may be combined. A copy of the registration papers or letter verifying lineage must accompany the submitted scores. Classical Dressage only.

The Moody Mare Trophy given by Kimberly Moody. This award is for a Baroque or Baroque-Cross Horse (Andalusian, Friesian, Lipizzaner, Lusitano) shown by an Adult Amateur, Jr/Young Rider, or Professional.

Scores may be from Recognized or Unrecognized shows at any level of competition. The award will be given to the highest average score based on one (1) score each from four (4) different judges from the same or combined levels of competition. A copy of registration papers must accompany the submitted scores. Classical Dressage only.

The Full of Grace Trophy given by Leslie Grimm. This award is for Draft or Draft-Cross horse (does not include Friesians) shown by owner. Owner can be an Adult Amateur, Jr/Young Rider or Professional.

Trophy is based upon one (1) score each from three (3) different judges at any level of Recognized or Unrecognized competitions. One (1) score must come from a NODA sponsored show. Scores from different levels of competition may be combined. A copy of registration papers or a letter verifying the horse’s lineage must accompany the submitted scores. Classical Dressage only.

Western Dressage Champion Trophy sponsored by NODA. Awarded to the horse/rider combination earning the highest average score based on one (1) score each from (4) different judges at any Western Dressage level at Recognized or Unrecognized competitions. At least two (2) scores must be from two (2) separate NODA shows. Scores from different levels may be combined. This trophy is a non-rotating trophy and is awarded permanently to the recipient (open to Jr/YR, AA or Pro). Western Dressage only

NODA Year End Award Descriptions NODA Western Dressage Junior Trophy sponsored by Kathleen Allen. Awarded to the junior rider with the highest average score based on one (1) score each from four (4) different judges in Western Dressage tests. At least two (2) scores must come from NODA Schooling Shows; other scores may come from any shows that meet the NODA criteria as found in the prize list. The award is for a youth rider who hasn’t reached their 18th birthday by November 30th of that calendar year. Scores from different levels may be combined. This is a non-rotating trophy and is awarded permanently to the recipient. Western Dressage only.

NODA Vintage Western Dressage Rider Trophy sponsored by Judy Jacobsen in honor of her first horse, Colby. It is given to the rider with the highest average score based on one (1) score each from four (4) different judges in Western Dressage tests. At least two (2) scores must come from (2) separate NODA Schooling Shows; other scores may come from any shows that meet the NODA criteria as found in the prize list. The rider must be 50 years of age or older (must supply DOB) when scores are earned. The rider may be either an adult amateur or a professional. Scores from different levels may be combined. This is a rotating trophy. Western Dressage only.

The BaR S Western Dressage Versatility Trophy sponsored by Barbara Soukup. Awarded to a horse and rider team where the horse, primarily trained and ridden by an amateur rider, best demonstrates that Western Dressage training benefits a horse in other western riding disciplines. Applicant must submit one (1) Western Dressage score (excluding Western Dressage Equitation) from three (3) different judges.

Western Dressage scores must include one (1) score from at least two (2) separate NODA Schooling Shows; other scores may come from any shows that meet the NODA criteria as found in the prize list.

Scores from different levels may be combined. In addition, evidence of winning three (3) ribbons at 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd place in one or more western riding disciplines other than dressage must be submitted.

This is a rotating trophy. Western Dressage only.

TROPHIES for UNRECOGNIZED (Schooling) SHOWS The Laddie Andahazy Memorial Trophy sponsored by The Paddock Group on behalf of NODA and in memory of Gretchen Singleton, who recognized Laddie Andahazy’s contributions as a longtime member, judge, and driving force in the equestrian community, perhaps most noticeably at Lake Erie College.

Awarded to the amateur dressage rider with the highest average score in his or her first year of showing, based on one (1) score each from four (4) different judges. At least two (2) scores must come from the NODA schooling show series; other scores may come from any NODA approved shows. Scores from two (2) consecutive levels may be submitted. This is a permanent trophy. Classical Dressage only.

The Rowdy Memorial Trophy donated by Cheryl Lee to recognize outstanding effort by an amateur competitor. The award is based upon the combined average score obtained at the NODA Schooling Show Championship plus the highest score earned by the same entry at the same level at a NODA Schooling Show. Classical Dressage only.

The Sweeter Trophy donated by Janeen Grava to recognize outstanding effort by a junior rider, 14 years of age and under. The trophy is given to a junior rider who has not reached their 14th birthday by November 30th of that calendar year. The trophy is based upon the combined average obtained at the NODA Schooling Show Championship plus three (3) scores earned from the same level of competition from NODA schooling shows. This award is a non-rotating trophy that is awarded permanently to the recipient. Classical Dressage only.

NODA Year End Award Descriptions The Fox Smith Trophy donated by Lynn Fry in memory of Fox Smith of Red Raider Camp to recognize outstanding achievement in Walk-Trot and/or Dressage Seat Equitation. The award is given to the equitation rider with the highest average percentage from three (3) equitation classes: one (1) score each from two (2) different judges at NODA Schooling Shows and one (1) from the NODA Championship Show.

Some proof of score from each show must be submitted. (See NODA Handbook or website). List show name, judge, percentage, and have the show secretary sign to verify. Classical Dressage only.

Determined Effort Trophy given by Niki Sackman to recognize outstanding effort by a traditional stock horse showing dressage. Awarded to the Junior, Amateur or Professional riding a registered American Quarter Horse (AQHA), American Paint Horse (APHA), or American Mule (ADMS), with the highest average based upon one (1) score each from four (4) different judges at any level obtained at dressage schooling shows. The four (4) scores must be obtained from the same level of competition and at least one (1) score must be earned at a NODA Schooling Show. A copy of the registration papers must accompany the submitted scores. Classical Dressage only The Giving Spirit Trophy is sponsored and donated by friends of English Oak Stable in memory of longtime NODA member and friend, Laura Wolf. The Trophy is to be given to the Junior or Amateur, horse and rider combination, with the highest median score in Training Level Test 2 and/or Test 3. One (1) score each from three (3) different judges, earned at NODA Schooling Shows must be submitted. Classical Dressage only.

TROPHIES for RECOGNIZED DRESSAGE SHOWS The Michael von der Nonne Trophy given by Dagmar Zimmerman in memory of a dressage pioneer in Northeast Ohio, to the rider/horse (rider may be amateur or professional) with the highest median score at First Level using one (1) score each from three (3) different judges at Recognized competitions.

Classical Dressage only.

The Richard Gascoigne Memorial Trophy given by Bitsy Gascoigne and Ann Gascoigne Nixon in memory of Richard Gascoigne. Awarded to the adult amateur rider/horse with the highest average at Second level or above in Recognized competition, based upon one (1) score each from four (4) different judges at recognized dressage competitions. Classical Dressage only.

The Richter 5 Memorial Trophy given by Maggie Ball to the Arabian or half Arabian horse, with the highest average based upon one (1) score each from four (4) different judges at any level at Recognized dressage competitions. Scores from different levels of competition may be combined. A copy of the registration papers or written verification of lineage must accompany the submitted scores. (**) Classical Dressage only.

The Jane Grey Memorial Trophy given by Lisa Gorretta in memory of her Thoroughbred mare, Jane Grey aka “She’s Long Gone.” Awarded to a “second career” Thoroughbred that raced and then competed in dressage with the highest average based upon one (1) score each from four (4) different judges in Recognized competition at 2nd Level or above. Scores from different levels of competition may be combined. A copy of the registration papers AND documentation of a racing record must accompany submitted scores. (**) Classical Dressage only.

The Alessandria Memorial Trophy given by Lisa Gorretta and The Paddock Saddlery in memory of her Swedish Warmblood mare, “Alessandria,.” Awarded to the horse/rider with the highest average score at the FEI levels (PSG through Grand Prix combined) using one (1) score each from four (4) different judges.

Classical Dressage only.

NODA Year End Award Descriptions The Fabian Schoolmaster Trophy sponsored by owner, Regina M. Sacha-Ujczo and long-term lessee, Heather Soones Booher of Saddles 101, in the name of Oldenburg Gelding, Fabian. Created to encourage leasing or lending of valued dressage schoolmasters, and to honor those owners who seek to provide these mounts to aspiring riders, which contributes to the advancement of amateur riders in dressage.

Schoolmasters are tolerant, priceless, and invaluable to the future of dressage. This award recognizes the generosity of the owners of these horses. The recipient of this award will be the owner of the esteemed schoolmaster (and not the rider). The owner of the horse must be nominated by the current rider of the schoolmaster. The rider must be a JR/YR or AA submitting four (4) scores from Recognized competitions at Training Level or higher from four (4) different Judges at the same level of competition. Both the nominated owner and the rider of the schoolmaster must be NODA members. Schoolmaster must have previously been shown in Recognized competitions at 3rd level or higher and earned a score of 60% or higher. Proof submitted may be a copy of the test or a score report sheet from the USDF/USEF. As part of the application process, submit a 150 to 200 word paragraph detailing the learning and influence gained from the schoolmaster relationship and the generous leasing or loaning of the experienced dressage mount. We reserve the right to publish this essay and read it as part of the Awards Process. Classical Dressage only.

SPECIAL TROPHIES The Edy Ujczo Horse Partnership Trophy awarded annually by Regina Sacha-Ujczo to an individual who provides outstanding emotional, grooming, ground, or economic support to a NODA rider. The individual must be a tireless supporter of a rider’s dressage pursuits, who is an essential “behind the scenes” caregiver to horse and rider, offering encouragement, motivation, and assistance. For details, please go to the NODA website, www.nodarider.org. Classical Dressage Only OTHER AWARDS Lead Line Achievement Sponsored by Serendipity Farm, this is a special ribbon to be awarded to each child who completes three (3) NODA Schooling Show lead line classes. Please use the Competition Report Form to submit proof of completion.

Events/Horse Trials - Recognized: A Scholarship in the amount of $50 and ribbons to 6th place will be awarded to the horse/rider combinations with the best averages earned in the dressage phase of Recognized USEF/USEA events or horse trials. One (1) score each from three (3) different judges at any level is required. A copy of the entire score sheet showing points earned (not just penalty points) including judge’s signature must be submitted.

Events/Mini-Trials - Unrecognized: Ribbons to 6th place will be awarded to the horse/rider combination with the best average scores earned in the Dressage portion of a “Mini-Trials Event.” One (1) score each from three (3) different judges at any level is required. A copy of the entire score sheet showing points earned (not just penalty points) including judge’s signature must be submitted. The judge must meet the NODA criteria for Unrecognized Dressage Competition.

Achievement Certificates will be given to any rider/horse combinations with three (3) scores of 60% or better at any level from three (3) different judges at either Recognized or Unrecognized competitions who have not placed in any of the previously listed Ribbons/ Scholarships or Trophies. Scores from different levels of competition may be combined. Score report form must be submitted to receive the achievement certificate.

Our History and Today Nurtured by a handful of Dressage pioneers during its inception in 1969, NODA has grown from a grass-roots organization into one with nationwide influence. NODA’s 300+ members represent a widespread demographic area and people of all ages. We include riders of every level who own or lease horses, have their horses in training or take occasional lessons on school horses. Their riding goals and NODA involvement vary with their available time and love of horses. Integrated within NODA’s membership are trainers, instructors, judges, technical delegates and international FEI competitors that provide educational support for the horse and rider.

NODA was formed to promote and further interest in the understanding of dressage through education, active participation and support of local, regional, and national dressage activities. Today we are a US Dressage Federation Group Member Organization (GMO). NODA is one of the largest GMO’s in USDF Region 2 which consists of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, & Wisconsin.

NODA came into being mainly as an educational organization at a time when dressage was still largely a mystery in the Cleveland area (as it was in much of the United States). The initial formative meeting of NODA took place at Red Raider Camp in response to a letter written by Joan Rapp, with personalized notes exhorting people to give dressage a try. Red Raider Camp became a center of dressage interest by virtue of the influence of Emmy Temple, Suzanne Jones, Dale Lappert, Lynn Fry and Gail Patton. They, along with Joan Rapp, who became the founding president of NODA, were instructors at Red Raider at the time. The organization held early meetings both at Red Raider and the Chagrin Falls Library.

Schooling Shows were held at area stables with one or two people running the show. They took “the box” of show supplies to the show site. Together with the judge, this skeleton crew managed the show with anywhere from 12 to 60 rides. Today NODA offers a popular Schooling Shows Series each year with Championship Show. Most of our schooling shows now have two or three competition rings, and often more than 120 rides!

Recognized Shows NODA hosts and organizes two popular Recognized Shows each summer. They are certified by the U.S. Equestrian Federation and the U.S. Dressage Federation. The shows have three to four rings of competition and draw riders from around the United States.

Education NODA is an educational organization. We have sponsored many clinics and workshops. The first one was presented by Lockie Richards in the fall of 1969, followed by one given by Emmy Temple in the spring of 1971. Since then we have had many others including Hans Moeller, Bodo Hangan, Violet Hopkins, Jean Froisard, Jessica Ransenhausen, Carol Grant, Gabor Foltenyi, Terry Ciotti-Gallo and Major Anders Lindgren (NODA hosted five USDF Instructor Seminars with Major Lindgren in the early 1990s). During NODA’s 44 years, other educational programs have been held for members and non-members alike. NODA has sponsored USDF “L” Programs, USDF Adult Camps, the Region 2 USDF/Premier Dressage Adult Clinic with Walter Zettl, and USDF Instructor/Trainer Certification Program.

At NODA workshops and clinics, we’ve learned how to interpret and ride dressage tests (including the rider tests), create a musical freestyle, take care of our “show nerves” with sport psychology, fill volunteer positions such as tabulating or scribing at shows, breed a better sport horse, and improve our riding with the Alexander Technique, T’ai Chi and yoga. Lectures have focused on such topics as equine health, trailer safety, approved bits, classical dressage, saddle and tack fit, helmet safety, and horse nutrition.

Awards To top off each busy year, NODA hosts an annual awards banquet. NODA offers year-end awards for scores earned in recognized and unrecognized (schooling) competition, as well as special awards and trophies with specific criteria.

Our thanks are given to all of the hardworking officers, Board members, and committee members who have served with them over the years.

Volunteers Everything we do, shows, clinics, workshops, newsletter, website, awards banquet, silent auction, is organized and run by hardworking volunteers. We congratulate all NODA members past and present for their contributions, participation, and volunteer hours. You have helped make NODA the equestrian association it is today. Thank you!

NODA Lifetime Achievement Award Initiated in 2011, this award recognizes and honors individuals who have devoted countless hours of service to NODA in the pursuit of excellence both to NODA and to our sport of Dressage. This award recognizes those individuals in our spotlight, in the trenches quietly just doing the work, the person you think of when something needs to be done, someone who would remember how it has been done in the past, or someone who served years doing our committee work. Recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award helped to create the NODA we enjoy today. These are important people and should be remembered and honored.

Honoring Senior Dressage Riders and Horses The Dressage Foundation (www.DressageFoundation.org) has a unique honor for senior dressage riders and horses. The Century Club recognizes Dressage riders and horses whose combined age totals 100 years or more. Horse and rider perform a Dressage test of any level, at a Dressage show or event, and are scored by a Dressage judge or professional. Among the 125 horse/rider combinations nationwide who are members of the Century Club, are NODA members, Beverly Van Nieuwal and John Claridge (deceased).

Dressage is an approach to the training of the horse. It is not an end in itself, but rather a means to an end. The end is to produce a pleasant, relaxed horse; a horse free of resistance, which is supple, in balance, and which, as a result, moves with a minimum amount of strain and effort under the weight of the rider over any terrain, and who is easy to control.

This applies to all horses regardless of their jobs or discipline.

It does not matter how good you are … it matters if you have the passion!

I am long overdue in honoring him for 30 plus years of support and encouragement in my horse endeavors. Even before we were married, he promised to help me buy a horse someday when finances were better. Fifteen years and three children later, he fulfilled that promise and supported my purchase of a $500 ex polo pony, who turned out to be a gem of a first horse.

He listened attentively as I droned on and on about horses and even came on trail rides, walking along side of us on foot.

He made many visits to the barn with me and learned how not to be afraid of this huge animal. Even though he was intimidated, he handled my horse because he wanted to help me.

He has been at all but one of my shows over the years and has photographed and videotaped hours of riding when I know he had better things to do with his time. He has talked me off the ledge when I felt inept and overwhelmed in my riding, and offered encouragement every step of the way. When I presented the idea of buying property and building a barn, he was there alongside of me. I shudder to think of the mistakes we almost made buying the wrong land. He had so much faith in my vision! I am not sure he should have trusted me as much as he did. There is no farm chore he will not do. He often gets up before me to clean stalls, feed and turn out the horses. He repairs broken fences, plows the drive, rakes the ring, improves the trails, spreads limestone, and does everything and anything that needs done. He told me he even enjoys it. Phew, I don’t know what I would do if he didn’t. I depend on him for all the heavy tasks I cannot do. He has encouraged me to travel overseas with my brother and holds down the fort. The place looks better than when I am here everyday!

Years ago, he attempted to ride, but it was not part of his DNA, if you know what I mean. I would never have forgiven myself if he got hurt.

He is quite content to be on the ground next to a horse or admiring his beauty from across the pasture.

Three years ago, I asked if he could volunteer at the summer NODA show at Chagrin Valley Farms. I told him we would be checking people and horses in and directing them to park trailers. A few minutes in, he decided that it would be great to help people unload and take their tack to the stalls. He commandeered the golf cart and pitched in. Here was a man in his sixties, trekking back and forth for several hours in 90 degree heat carrying heavy loads. (He is in good shape because of all the physical work he has done on the farm over the years). He always goes above and beyond. He is organized and friendly, and competitors welcomed his help, along with the rest of the volunteer team.

Up until this summer he had never driven the truck and trailer with a horse in it. He was happy to leave that to me. He would borrow it to haul mulch and lumber and help people move furniture, but if I was available, he wanted me to drive. Two months ago, I was recruited to be a last minute substitute demo rider for the “L” Program. Since I

was at the farm volunteering all day, I needed to ask him to bring my horse to me- a 40 minute drive from home. He had helped me load horses dozens of times over the years, and I knew he could do it. He never hesitated. He showed up exactly at the time he was supposed to and was very proud of himself. I was extremely proud of him too.

He has come so far on this horse journey.

I asked him to tell me if the farm is getting to be too much for him.

He reassures me that he is happy to share this dream with me. The best part of the day for us is tucking the horses in at night. Tony gets lots of love and face rubbing from his human dad. They have a special bond.

I hope you will consider Matt for your wonderful award. He truly has earned it, and I would love for him to receive recognition beyond my own flimsy attempts at showing my appreciation.
