We had another successful Recognized Show weekend at Chagrin Valley Farms. Thank you again to Betsy Juliano and Havensafe Farm for sponsoring the Saturday evening Freestyle and helping this event grow. We had a NODA record number of Freestyle competitors. Our success each year is due to all our sponsors. In addition to Betsy and Havensafe, we wish to thank Big Dee’s, Shade Tree Farm, Schneiders, Christine Thompson, and Geauga Feed, to name just a few.
I hope you are planning to attend NODA’s Banquet and Award Celebration on November 19th at the Crowne Plaza in Independence. It is always a good time for all. What’s in a Name? “Java Joe” By Patty Keim
H
orses receive an HID number directly from USDF, not through NODA, but we like to think of our horses as NODA members. Let us now how your horse got its official and/or barn name by emailing Fran at Membership@nodarider.org or call 440-823-5965. Patty Keim has this to say about her horse, Java Joe.
I had just retired by event horse Good Man Adam and was out searching for my next mount. Via Dreamhorse.com, I found a 5 year old TB/ Perch cross who looked to be a good prospect. I tried “Espresso” and felt he was good match for me NODA News 2016 Page 4
so I purchased him and we began our partnership – that was 8 years ago – he’s 13 now. His barn nickname at the time was “Spressy” and I could not bring myself to call him that --- sorta sounds girly to me to be honest. He’s a big boy, 17.2 and over 1600 lbs so he needed a more manly name in my mind. He’s very dark bay with no markings and since I’m a big coffee lover I decided to stay with the coffee theme and landed on the name Java Joe, barn name is now just “Java”...or “Hunka Chunka” for those that know us well! The Results are In! USDF L Program Wrap Up By Clara Etzel
T
he results are in! After nearly 10 months learning and preparing, I received news from USDF that I am now an L Graduate and passed with distinction. I chronicled my experience attending Central Arizona Riding Academy's Part 1 for NODA, and decided to write about Part 2 all at once. Part 2 of the L Program is for individuals who have taken Part 1 and have earned necessary scores to move on to Part 2. Part 2 is limited to 10 candidates. Part 2 consists of the D1 and D2 Sessions and the Final Exam. L Faculty for CARA’s Part 2 included Debbie Riehl-Rodriguez (D1), Janet Foy (D2), and Axel Steiner and Joan Darnell (Final Exam). For all these sessions, candidates were required to have a scribe. I was fortunate to find a scribe who could help for all 3 sessions, but other candidates had a different scribe for each session. The D1 and D2 Sessions were held at the beautiful Colorado Horse Park in Parker, CO. D1 (June 4-5) was more of an educational session, where candidates watched Training-Second Level rides at a show and would get practice judging with our scribe. Debbie judged the same rides that the candidates did and at the end of each class candidates' test sheets were tabulated and compared against Debbie's. So, at the end of the session we had a clear idea of how we placed each class, how Debbie placed each class, and any variations in scoring. NODA News 2016 Page 5
D2 (August 6-7) was a very similar session, with more of an emphasis on the final exam. We judged TrainingSecond Level classes again, and our scores were compared against Janet’s. We practiced giving oral comments more in this session, which proved to be difficult for most of the group, as sometimes scores and comments didn’t align. Janet made sure to set us straight on that before the end of the weekend!
The Final Exam was October 1-2 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, CA. Candidates had to take a written exam, judge Training-Second Level classes, and give oral comments for classes. It was nice to see Axel and Joan again, as they were faculty I had in Part 1. But the exam weekend was much more serious than the classroom setting. No more time for questions-Joan and Axel wanted to assess each candidate and determine if they fulfilled the requirements to be considered an L Graduate. I’m thankful the hard work paid off and looking forward to the next step. Having completed all 6 sessions, I think the L Program in its entirety is a great experience for anyone interested in learning more about dressage, even if you don’t want to judge. A few nuggets to share: “With the legs, he must respond and with the rein, you must be able to slow down and stop.”
Do not overwork young horses and as the rider, give them confidence to experience the world.
Short, productive sessions being key with young horses.
At all stages of learning, the training must be black and white to insure the horse learns the correct foundation.
Transitions are key. Do “hundreds” of them in a session.
No surprise that there was a packed spectator crowd close to 1,000 people per day at this gorgeous facility. Several of our NODA members travelled to Toronto to be numbered among the throngs of people who were fortunate to witness this amazing clinic in action! The Caledon Equestrian Park radiated its own sense of tranquility and breath taking views of the Caledon Hills and Niagara Escarpment.
Nancy Stanton is a serious and highly successful trainer and competitor but manages to make dressage fun for herself, her students and her horses. Her confident and sometimes humorous demeanor was an asset to give her young horse assurance in this most electric atmosphere. In fact, Volt was paired with another young horse so his “matter of fact” attitude would calm the other very fearful NODA News 2016 Page 12
