March is always a month of anticipation for equestrians in Ohio and surrounding areas as we begin planning our time for the upcoming spring and summer.

Amateurs and professionals who were lucky enough to have spent the cold winter months in the South are returning home and looking forward to the 2017 competition season.

This year’s Ohio weather had certainly kept us guessing.

We haven’t had constant snow like last year, but the cold days and warm days have definitely been sharing time with each other.

Did you read the February’s USDF Connections magazine?

The issue honored GMO award winners, and if you get a chance to look you’ll see a picture of Lisa Gorretta and me, with George Williams, accepting Linda Cooley’s GMO website award. We actually look pretty good! Keep in mind that Dr. Jeni Gaffney won Honorable Mention (2nd place) for an article she wrote last year. So, now is the time to think about submitting your article, and having a chance to win a GMO Newsletter award in the categories of “General Interest” and/or “Personal Experience.”

She will be looking for feedback from all NODA youth about what they would like to see from NODA. Attention NODA Juniors and Young Riders! NODA will offer free coaching clinic for Jr/YR NODA members at Lake Erie College Equestrian Center on Saturday, May 20th, the day before the NODA schooling show on May 21st.

Your NODA committees are working hard getting ready for our schooling show series, recognized shows, and clinics, and we’re already making plans for the yearend banquet. NODA committees meet regularly after each event to go over the good and the bad. We work hard to make sure we are doing the best we can to give our members access to what they want and expect. We encourage each and every one of you to offer comments and ideas.

You always are welcome to contact us (MemberRep@nodarider.org) or to attend any board meeting. We meet at 7:00 pm the 2nd Monday of each month at Panera in Solon. All board meetings are open to members. The next meeting is March 13th. We’d love to see you there.

Adequan/USDF FEI Trainers Conference Synopsis

I

was notified late last year that the USDF was instituting a new continuing education requirement for “L” graduates to maintain their status in USDF publications. Since I was going to be in Florida for a little bit of time, I decided to attend the USEF Judges Forum in West Palm Beach, FL on January 15, 2017. In order to fulfill the continuing education requirement I had to also attend the FEI Trainers Conference in Loxahatchee, FL January 16-17, 2017. I was already convinced of attending the Trainers Conference before knowing of the continuing education requirement, so I decided to attend both events to satisfy the continuing education requirement.

The USEF Judges Forum’s main presenter was Lilo Fore, but the day included a presentation from NODA’s near and dear Lisa Gorretta.

Then Monday and Tuesday Lilo Fore joined forces with Hans-Christian Matthiesen at Mary Anne McPhail’s High Meadow Farm in the arena working with seven different horse and rider pairs. There were some really top quality horse and rider pairs to watch. There were many 7 year olds (possible candidates for the new FEI 7 Year Old Tests) as well as pairs that were seasoned at the Small and Big Tours.

Lilo stood at the far end of the arena (or visa versa), offering different vantage points and variation in scores and comments.

So, after a demo pair did the shoulder in, 8-meter volte, and half pass from the PSG test, this discussion would take place for a few minutes. After the first attempt, Lilo or Hans-Christian would sometimes do an exercise or make a suggestion to help the rider get more bend in the half-pass, less angle in the shoulder in, or more cadence in the trot. Then the rider would come again, usually making a much better effort.

What was great about having two judges as the clinicians for this conference was the opportunity to listen to their methodology. For example, when one horse came on 4 tracks in the shoulder in and someone mentioned it, Lilo’s response was not to penalize harshly because it was on 4 tracks instead of 3, rather to ask the question: Did the increased angle affect the trot rhythm or regularity? There was a real focus to consider the balance, connection, and impulsion for the level you are judging.

Hans-Christian and Lilo were really clear when a movement is first introduced in a level not to be too harsh. Instead, recognize everything that was going right with the movement and then address any modifiers.

One horse worked through an FEI Intermediate A movement making half steps which allows for 2 meters forward. This horse went at least 5 meters, but sat quite well, had great joint articulation, was regular, and level. In this case Hans-Christian and Lilo wanted to reward the correct biomechanics of the half steps and the quality this horse had, not deducting too much for the horse traveling more.

The group from the Judges Forum sat behind C, and auditors for the conference sat outside both long sides of the arena. On Monday, Hans-Christian and Lilo worked with each demo pair for a short period of time on a particular movement and then asked the audience if there were any questions. It seemed on day one there was a slight struggle to get the format of the day to benefit both judges and auditors. We saw beautiful horse and rider pairs, but many of the judges wanted to know what score and comment would be given for each movement, which was rarely addressed in detail.

The dynamic of Lilo and HansChristian was calm, yet fun and Tuesday, however was a much more focused day that playful. They both are so seemed to please everyone auditing. Hans-Christian and conscious of keeping the horse mentally relaxed and Lilo worked with each demo pair on a specific set of happy in their work, which allowed the demo pairs to movements from a test. Lilo and Hans-Christian would work cohesively throughout the conference. I thoroughly score each movement and give remarks, then ask a enjoyed the experience and thank NODA for assisting me judge or two to give scores and comments as well as with a professional grant to attend the FEI Trainers asking the same from the trainer’s section. This two-day seminar is geared toward the education of everyone interested in learning about the qualities to look for in a dressage sport horse. The 2017 USDF Sport Horse Seminar will be held August 5-6, 2017 at Iron Spring Farm, in Coatesville, PA. Regional Championship Prize Money Announced!

Prize money totaling over $180,000 will be awarded at the 2017 Great American Insurance Group/USDF Regional Championships. This prize money will be divided evenly among the nine regions and 35 divisions that are offered, allowing each region to present competitors with over $20,000 in prize money and awards. t has been a very busy winter. We are ready for the show season. NODA schooling shows calendar is available on the NODA Website SCHOOLING page, and at www.horseshowoffice.com. Online volunteer sign up is now LIVE and ready using SignUpGenius (Click Here) or copy www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C48ABAE2FA132017 into your browser, The 2017 Schooling Shows Prize List & NODA Awards Program will arrive soon in your mailbox. All we need is for YOU to come to our shows!

Join NODA now (if you haven’t already) and get in the show ring or volunteer. We are looking forward to a fun summer.

A friendly reminder about a few changes to the schooling shows this year:  We are capping all shows at 70 entries. Enter early (but not until the open date) to ensure a spot at the show. Show entries will “close” once we receive 70 entries. If that happens before the “received by” entry close date, then these entries will be put on a waitlist.  In order to qualify for the Championship show, you must earn the appropriate scores AND volunteer one shift at a schooling show. You may have someone work it for you, but you need to let us know at the show so we can keep track. In this way, the NODA bucks earned are yours to use.
