It’s time to volunteer for Dressage 2015 and Dressage 2015 Encore! NODA’s popular recognized shows weekend is July 18 and 19 at Chagrin Valley Farm in Bainbridge, OH. We need your volunteer help. It is fun and rewarding. Volunteers earn valuable NODA bucks and a cool NODA T-Shirt. Scribes, tabulators, runners, paddock masters/ring stewards , office assistants, and “Welcome Tent volunteers are needed for morning and afternoon shifts Saturday and Sunday. Set-up crews for the dressage arenas are needed Thursday, July 16. Tear-down crews for the arenas are needed Sunday, July 19 after the show. I will do my best to give everyone their first choice of jobs and shifts. Some jobs, such as scribes, need to be filled by people who are not showing (or are finished showing for the weekend). Scribes are the only volunteer jobs that need prior experience, and they need to be willing to volunteer for the entire day because the judges always request that they have the same person for the entire day (if possible). Volunteer Job Descriptions, NODA Buck information and FAQ available on the Volunteer Page on the NODA website, www.nodarider.org. We receive compliments every year from competitors, spectators, and judges regarding our organized, well run show and our wonderful volunteers. Our volunteers make or break the success of our shows. Can you help? Please contact Karen:Rs-vol-coord@nodarider.org, or call 330-220-4705 (home) or 440-263-1944 (cell) with your preference of jobs and your availability as soon as possible.

Sarah Martin Clinic Recap By Lauren Hunter ● Photos by Dee Liebenthal

arah Martin is a highly accomplished member of the dressage community for a number of reasons. She is not only a successful trainer and rider in the show ring, but also a well-respected teacher. She has earned her USDF bronze, silver, and gold medals and trained USDF Horse of the Year horses and riders from Training Level through Prix St Georges. Furthermore, she is a USDF Certified Second and Fourth Level Instructor Trainer and a USDF “L” Program Graduate with Distinction. In a clinic hosted by NODA at Sand Hill Stables in Mantua on April 25-26, Sarah Martin provided both riders and auditors with a highly educational experience. One quality that makes Sarah unique and valuable as a teacher is her ability to adapt to students of all levels and disciplines. Her great attention to detail allows her to break down every concept into “bitesized” pieces of information that are accurate yet simple enough for riders of any discipline or level to understand. Rather than merely telling riders what to do, she explains why.

As dressage riders, we are programmed to seek out where we and our horses fall short of perfection. However, Sarah reminds us that it is an invaluable skill to also know when to leave it alone. What we need to seek is improvement, not perfection. Why is my horse spooking?
In another lesson, Sarah teaches a young rider how to address fear in her Arabian mare by explaining the science behind her behavior. “Being nervous,” she says, “releases bursts of adrenaline. movement accounts for two scores in every single test we ride, it deserves a significant amount of attention, according to Sarah. At the end of every ride throughout the weekend, every rider was asked to halt reasonably square and straight on the centerline. They remained
there, immobile, for about a minute. The purpose of this exercise is to make a connection in the horse’s mind between the halt, a job well-done, and the end of work. Additionally, the immobility of the horse and stillness of the rider allows the horse time to process their lesson and relax the mind and body. It allows them to find a comfortable and balanced place between the aids, and rewards them for their efforts. These are just a few of the many lessons learned by those who attended and audited the riding portion of the clinic. Sarah also spoke on the topic of Western dressage and taught a few Western dressage lessons. USDF News New USDF Rider Awards Announced for 2016 Lexington, KY (May 20, 2015) - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) announced today the new Dressage Seat Equitation Rider Awards, to first be awarded in the 2016 competition year. Available to both USDF Participating and Group Members, riding in any division, these awards are designed to recognize riders' achievements in equitation and will be awarded at three levels; Elementary, Accomplished, and Elite. For each level, riders must earn five scores of 65 percent, 72 percent, and 80 percent, respectively. As with other USDF Rider Awards, scores do not expire and do not need to be earned within one competition year. While the first USDF Dressage Seat Equitation Rider Awards will not be awarded until the 2016 competition year, scores from current or past Dressage Seat Equitation classes may be eligible. Winners of these awards will receive a certificate of recognition as well as a specially designed USDF lapel pin, in yellow, red, and blue for the respective levels. USDF Awards Committee Chair Peggy Klump explained, "We are so pleased to be able to provide the well deserved acknowledgement and recognition to those individuals excelling in dressage equitation. This is an important aspect to our sport and these awards further USDF's mission of recognizing achievements, as well as providing yet another national level honor to be bestowed upon not only USDF Participating Members, but Group Members as well, in any division of competition."
USDF Launches new Youth Dressage Sport Horse Breeder/ Handler Seminar Lexington, KY (May 26, 2015) - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce its partnership with Dressage at Devon to create a new sport horse seminar geared toward youth. This new seminar has been created to familiarize the younger generation with the dressage sport horse industry. The seminar will be held over two days, September 2829 at Dressage at Devon, and will consist of classroom and practical handling sessions, along with the opportunity to observe competition classes and practice judging. Participation is limited to USDF members between the ages of fourteen and 23, with only twelve spots available. “Developed by the USDF Sport Horse Committee, this program is oriented toward youth with an interest in sport horse breeding. We are so excited that Dressage at Devon has offered to help us kick off our first program this fall, to familiarize youth with the breeding and showing of dressage prospects and breeding stock, stated Kristi Wysocki, USDF Sport Horse Committee Chair. For more information on the USDF Youth Dressage Sport Horse Breeder/Handler Seminar, or to access an application, please visit the USDF website at www.usdf.org, or contact the USDF Sport Horse Committee liaison at sporthorse@usdf.org.
