Smart Fabrics Do we dare to wear? By Noeleen Mc Afee As we reach for that special item on the hanger, what goes through our heads! ‘If I buy this where will I wear it to? What will I wear it with? What will other people think?’ So many questions, yet rarely do we stop to look at the details on the label to see what kind of materials we are buying. We all know our cottons, chiffons and nylon but what about SMART FABRICS. This new term comes from the wonderful world of today’s thriving technology ‘geeks’. With the world growing a technology obsessed generation, what is in store for our future?! From laptops to Ipads to mobile phones it is clear to see it is only the beginning of what’s to come. Smart fabrics and intelligent textiles are materials which incorporate cunning molecules or clever electronics, they are constantly thriving and European research efforts are tackling some of the sectors toughest challenges, such as clothes that monitor your heart, measure the chemical composition of your body fluids or keep track of you and your local environment, it will revolutionize healthcare and emergency response. Smart textiles must be comfortable, their technology must be unobtrusive, they must withstand a difficult and variable environment and, particularly for medical and emergency applications they must be absolutely reliable.
Smart Fabrics will soon be the must have fashion accessory, not only will they look good and feel comfortable but they will soon be thinking for us. Yes you did hear me right, they will be thinking for us, with clothing itself incorporating different technological aspects, it is gaining an intelligence of its own. Techno fashion as it is known is taking the world by storm, from digital dresses to remote- control couture. From temperature control to keeping dry and built in MP3 players to built in mobile phones. Our clothes will soon be coming to life. Picture yourself being stuck outside in the cold and rain and your jacket automatically heating up and drying off, what more could you ask for. These fabrics are called ‘phase-change fabrics’. These heat modifying textiles are usually seen in outdoor gear like windbreakers but are now on their way to our fashion clothing. Not only can we look stylish but we can keep warm too. Electric conducting fabrics are also a huge thing for the future, there are various products available at the moment but as they are quite new to the market they can be quite expensive. MP3 players, mobile phones and computers are all on their way to being completely built in to your clothing, with touch sensitive technology at the moment it is possible to make calls and listen to music.
The M-Dress (mobile phone dress) is a step ahead of mobile phone technology, it incorporates a silk dress and mobile phone. By simply inserting a SIM card, it allows wearers to receive and make calls without having to carry around a mobile phone. Blogging in Motion is another techno fashion idea, where a purse involuntarily blogs your whole day, while wearing the bag, each 30 paces taken by the wearer the purse will take a photo and upload it straight away to your online blog. BMW are also getting in on the ‘smart fabrics’ phenomenon and are working alongside the Polytechnic school of Montreal in Canada to develop a new flexible, polymer based fibre that can be woven into existing fabrics. It is a capacitive pad that can register touches and swipes when alternating current is plumbed through the fibres. Think about running a finger along your seat to adjust the amount of lumber support or swipe across the dashboard ahead of the passenger to open the glove box. Even better, this new material can be cleaned like more traditional fabrics. So next time you go to purchase a piece of clothing think about what you are purchasing, who knows it may contain a ‘smart fabic’ you never knew about before.

Why Swap an English Winter for Another? By Noeleen Mc Afee
Dull grey skies, rain beating off the windows and wind howling through the creaks in the door, this is how we know that winter has arrived. The UK is known for its depressing winters, with day after day and nothing to do and with unexpected horrible weather, it makes it difficult to plan anything. So why do people opt to stay in the UK during these dreary months. Maybe in the hope that one of these winters we will truly have that magical winter wonderland with lots of snow and Christmas cheer. Or maybe it’s because of the dreaded recession that just isn’t going to end. But why keep yourself in a land of depression, when you should be out enjoying every single moment of your life. It is time to live by the rule: You Only Live Once. So whatever the reason may be that is keeping you at home this winter, why not rethink your reasons and delve into the unknown and experience what can only be described as a completely unique and different perspective of the world, and go out and travel this winter. You may have experienced many of these countries such as Canada, Prague, Germany in the glorious summer months. But there is something almost magical about jetting off to a winter wonderland. Travelling during the off season means everything is a lot cheaper, so if you are concerned about how you would afford it, just take a look at flight and hotel prices, as you may be shocked at the low prices. The winter season prices come down a third to a half of that of summer holiday prices. So forget about your money worries and enjoy what different countries have to offer. The atmosphere in different countries is truly enchanting, definitely what you would call a ‘real winter’. Just picture snowflakes falling around you, while beautiful fairy lights illuminate the icicles on the buildings, the crunch of tires over glistening snow covered roads, the refreshing smell of pine trees and warming smell of mulled wine. Just the thought of this fills your cheeks with glow and warmth. For all those who love to ski, want to give it a go, or even just like the thought of relaxing in a hot tub sipping champagne cocktails and overlooking glistening snow covered mountains. Why not hit the slopes in Andorra or Canada for that once in a lifetime experience. Why not take a sleigh ride, or stay in a log cabin and sip a hot beverage beside an open fire.
Another very unusual experience that every traveller is dying to give a go is the chance to sleep in -5 degrees Celsius conditions in an ice hotel, surrounded by walls, roof and floor made of thick ice, is definitely an experience you will only try once but you must try it. Although it is slightly on the expensive side of things, for those who can afford it, it is a must. As for those who cannot afford it, why not opt for a cheaper option and take a tour of an ice hotel instead. For all those ski lover as well, an amazing opportunity awaits in France and Switzerland as, ‘Rock the Pistes’ music festival is spread across the Portes du Soleil resorts, where you hear about the next concert by text and then you have to ski to be there on time. Frances Booth from the Guardian describes the unique experience: ‘I was at the top of the Stash snowpark, just clicking into my ski boots, when my phone beeped. "Jamaica, 1.30pm, near the snowpark in Les Crosets, accessible from the Crosets II chairlift!" read the text. I looked at my phone again. Surely that couldn't be right? It was already 1pm, and I was in France, in the Lindaret Valley, on the wrong side of the Franco-Swiss border. By my calculations I would have to ski three runs, take two lifts, and cross the border to make it to the Jamaica gig. For any skier below gold-medal standard, that sounded pretty much impossible; but hey, this was the sort of challenge that had attracted me to the Portes du Soleil in the first place. I would have to give it a shot. Within 50 minutes, after skiing as fast as we possibly could, my friends and I arrived at Les Crosets (lescrosets.ch), a venue halfway up the mountain, where – thanks to the start time being put back – Jamaica, the French electro-pop-rock duo, were only just starting their set. We collapsed, exhausted, on a patch of snow in the sunshine, surrounded by a backdrop of immense, jagged peaks. More skiers arrived, peeled off layers of clothing, and flopped on the snow. Snowboarders wearing neon sat on boards in a semi-circle and cracked open beers (there's no bar, so it's Bring Your Own). I'd never heard of Jamaica (who produced their debut album with Peter Franco, known for creating much of Daft Punk's sound), but they played crowd-pleasers with catchy lyrics to a small but wildly enthusiastic crowd. Soon, everyone was up and dancing in their ski boots.’ One of the most unique and amazing wonders of the world, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) brightens up the sky with its magnificent colours. The colour is mostly a luminous green, often with a hint of pink along the edge, and occasionally with a deep violet centre but these can be very rare. Winter is definitely the season to capture a glimpse of this mystical spectacle as this is the season it occurs most frequently.
So what exactly do you pack for a holiday in winter, think warm, woolly and cosy. Unlike a summer holiday your suitcase won’t be filled with dozens of outfits, as summer clothes tend to be very thin and light you can jam your suitcase full of outfits. Winter clothes are thick and chunky, so you will have to think more about what you are packing. Whether you are going to be walking around Christmas markets and fairs, staying in an ice hotel or going to a theatre, one thing you most certainly need with you is a good warm coat. It may be fleecy, silky, waterproof or woolly, just ensure it is warm. Next on your checklist should be woolly, knitted jumpers, scarves, hats and gloves. And not to forget your feet, a good thick pair of socks will be very convenient, along with a good pair of boots, Uggs or wellingtons. Although a good space saver in your luggage instead of cluttering it with all the different types of boots, why not ‘kill two birds with one stone’, as they say and buy a good pair of fleece or fur lined wellingtons, at least this way you can keep those feet warm and dry. If you are planning on going out in the evenings, whether it may be to a pub, nightclub, restaurant or to an opera for example. One thing you should not forget to pack is that precious LBD (Little Black Dress), it goes with absolutely anything. Heat things up with a chunky pair of knitted tights, add a woolly scarf, a nice warm jacket and a pair of heeled ankle boots and you are ready for your evening. Another very important piece of clothing you must not leave home without is your Thermals, they may not be the most attractive thing in your wardrobe but they will keep you nice and cosy while out in them sub-zero temperatures. For those who dread airports and the hassle that comes along with airports. One thing you should not worry about is what to wear. Wearing your thermals under your clothes will not only keep you warm but they will help cause less hassle whilst going through security and staying comfortable on the plane. Just wear jeans, a jumper, coat and boots, not forgetting your thermal underwear of course and you are ready for the airport. But ensure you bring a scarf, hat and gloves in your bag for when you reach your destination. This will help you when you reach the security area, as circumstances now cause everyone having to strip down, you won’t be holding up the queue while you strip down layer upon layer of chunky knits. This outfit choice will also help you keep a nice temperature and stay comfortable while on board the plane. A beautiful time to travel in winter is the month running up to Christmas, and around the New Year. With wonderful Christmas markets everywhere, outdoor ice rinks, and tasty winter cuisine. Most places will be covered in beautiful snow, while carollers sing Christmas songs. What more do you need to put you in a wonderful Christmas mood.

The Black Swan Film inspires fashion Natalie Portman plays an ambitious ballet dancer winning the lead in ‘Swan Lake’ but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more like the black swan rather than the beautiful white swan intended. A refreshing, feminine and sophisticated ballet inspired trend will hit the catwalks and shops in spring/summer 2012. This may include tutus, leotards and camisoles or simply just using the materials associated with ballet such as tulle, organza, chiffon, netting, tarlatan and muslin. Another way the ballet trend could inspire people is through the specialist costumes used for different characters in ballet. Feathers and diamantes are big statement pieces which would glam up any outfit. The long flowing skirts made from the sheerest of chiffons and the tight pink leotards which hug our figures beautifully definitely make every girl and woman’s dreams come true, as every little girl dreamed of being a ballerina, this trend can surely be a huge hit.
