OUR PURPOSE

When I was 17 years old, I left my hometown of Santa Barbara and moved to Los Angeles to go to school and learn about pattern making and clothing construction. I never wanted to be a clothing designer, but in 1979, when I was 23, I married my husband, Lonnie, and we started our own company. Despite all of the challenges we've faced, we're still here, 45 years later, with our sons ready to lead us into the future.

A Growing Family & Brand

In 1979, my husband, Lonnie, and I started our company out of our home garage. Back then, we were young and naive, but we had a dream and were determined to make it come to life. Since that very first season, we've remained a family-run business.

45 years later, the world has changed in incredible ways- our sons have become leaders within our business and we now sell more clothing online than we do in stores; however, one thing remains the same: our commitment to responsible business practices and making clothing ethically has never wavered.

In 2020, my first granddaughter was born; and this past year, we were blessed with the arrival of a second granddaughter. I want to do everything I can to ensure their future is as bright as possible. That means volunteer days at a local urban farm to help feed the homeless, upgrading our manufacturing facility and headquarter offices with energy-efficient LED lighting, increasing the use of natural fibers within our collection, eliminating excess water in our production processes, and donating to organizations like The Nature Conservancy, the National Park Foundation, CleanHub, GrowGood, the American Red Cross, Keep America Beautiful, and other causes.

When I walk into our office, it feels like I'm dreaming; I love working alongside my sister, my husband, my sons, and granddaughters everyday. Nothing makes me happier than working with family: it's the way we started our company, and it's our path to the future too.

My Mom's Apple Strudel

My mom always made this delicious recipe, and it's become a family favorite for celebrations, get-togethers, or just as a great breakfast or dessert dish. It offers a tasty combination of sweet, tart apples mixed with warm spices, creating a comforting and satisfying treat.

What you need

For the filling:

– 4-5 medium-sized apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

– 1/2 cup granulated sugar

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 8-10 sheets of phyllo dough, thawed if frozen

– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

– Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

– 1/4 cup bread crumbs or ground almonds (to absorb excess moisture)

Directions

– Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease it lightly with butter.

– In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, raisins (if using), and chopped nuts (if using). Toss until the apples are evenly coated.

– Heat the 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the apple mixture and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender but not mushy. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

– While the filling is cooling, prepare your phyllo dough. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean, dry surface. Brush the sheet lightly with melted butter. Repeat with the remaining sheets, stacking them on top of each other and brushing each one with melted butter.

– Once all the phyllo sheets are stacked, sprinkle the bread crumbs or ground almonds evenly over the top sheet of phyllo dough. This helps absorb any excess moisture from the apple filling.

– Spread the apple filling evenly over the surface of the phyllo dough, leaving about 2 inches of space along the edges.

– To roll the strudel, fold the edges of the phyllo dough over the filling, then gently roll the dough from one end to the other, creating a log shape. Place the rolled strudel seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.

– Brush the top of the strudel with any remaining melted butter.

– Bake the apple strudel in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the phyllo dough is golden brown and crisp.

– Remove strudel from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.

– Optionally, dust the top of the strudel with powdered sugar before serving.

– Serve slices of apple strudel warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy!
