The why and how

Established in 2009, Noise Solution’s mission is to “contribute to a world where everyone means something, and they know it”.

We achieve this through the power of music, relationships and technology to support those feeling furthest from meaning something in society. We use music mentoring to engage and provide a space around which to build relationships.

23 National awards since 2019

We build relationships* while focusing on these three evidenced basic psychological needs to increase well-being**

AUTONOMY

Feel in control

Musicians support each participant to create whatever music they want to make, how they want to make it, what is captured about their experience and who they want to share it with.

COMPETENCE

Feel good at something

People often feel music is complicated to make. We enable any participant, whatever experience they have, to experience feelings of success creating their music, easily and quickly.

RELATEDNESS

Feel seen

Each person shares their digital story, encouraging positive feedback from the people they care about. Participant and those watching are equally part of the process. This allows the participant to feel 'seen'.

* In clinical mental health and education research, relationships are evidenced to be the #1 indicator of success in any intervention

** Self Determination Theory recognises these three psychological needs as essential (It has 1.8 million citations in academic literature)

The more hours we deliver the greater the impact we have on well-being

Using an NHS Wellbeing tool we halved low well-being/ tripled high wellbeing

*Read how cost savings were estimated

Change in levels of well-being pre and post Noise Solution (n370).

Independently estimated savings to families and systems of £6.46 Million in 2024 alone (*see Costello report)

Some more numbers

• Average and mean participant age: 14

• 5 central staff : 1 CEO, 1 Project manager, 1 Operations manager, 1 Admin manager, 1 Admin

• Twenty five musicians working in the community, Working in partnership with fifteen studios

• £205k paid supporting musicians and studios (2024)

• (P.0001) Statistically significant impact on well-being, 7 years running

• Social Return On Investment: £6.46 Million with £12.50 returned for every £1 spent

• Turnover 2024: £520,700

• 2025 on course for £700,000

Three tiers of need offer

Prior to 2025 we had a ‘one size fits all’ twenty hour offer. We have since developed a three tier offer, designed to provide the right level of support depending on each participant’s need. An offer that is flexible enough to allow us to de-escalate that need (and its cost to services) as people progress through the programme.

HIGH: Planned engagement phase, in partnership with professionals, 1:1 mentoring, enhanced by their digital story. Deescalation route to our Mid offer

MID: 20 hours mentoring 1:1 In the community, half in a studio, enhanced by their digital story. Starting point or a progression route from High. People can start here or be deescalated from our High offer

LOW: 6 months weekly group work, engaging with Noise Solution peers. Alongside monthly 1:1 with the musician - A step down progression route from Mid or High

Why are we needed?

• There is huge need in the Eastern region for young people facing challenges in education/ mental health/neurodivergence.

• Cambridgeshire alone has an estimated 34,000 young people alone with diagnosable mental health challenges.

• Persistent absence and suspension rates have doubled in Suffolk post pandemic.

• Young women, those transitioning to adult mental health care, and those who are LGBTQ+ cause the most concern for services or have the lowest wellbeing when surveyed. What’s the #1 indicator of success in any Intervention?… Again, it is relationships

Map

of

commissioning/areas to increase our reach

Education is our largest funder especially in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. In 2024 we also had a good referral rates from local government in Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. While our referrals from mental health occur mainly in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The areas where we have not yet developed relationships with services present opportunities to receive further referrals, enabling us to support more young people through our High/Mid/low programmes

Aligns with National and Local Mental Health Priorities

• The crisis in youth mental health is overwhelming local services, with rising demand and limited capacity.

• Noise Solution provides a proven, non-clinical intervention based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT)—a globally recognised framework for improving well-being.

• Our model reduces reliance on CAMHS and other overburdened mental health services in ways that families and professionals alike can get behind. Non medicalised but highly professional.

Our five target aims

Aim One: Expanding High-Quality Mentoring Across the Eastern Region

We aim to increase access to our music mentoring across the Eastern region, targeting areas where our presence is limited, such as Essex, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire. Our current team has the capacity to expand by 30%, and we will focus on partnerships with multi-academy trusts and mental health commissioners to grow our reach, particularly for over-18s.

Aim Two: Increasing Access for Underrepresented Groups

We will improve engagement with women, LGBTQ+ people, minority ethnic communities, neurodiverse individuals, and disabled people. This includes refining our data collection to better understand and address disparities, increasing referrals for women, and strengthening partnerships, such as with The Kite Trust, to enhance accessibility for LGBTQ+ participants.

Our five target aims

Aim Three: Diversifying and Strengthening Our Income

To protect against financial risks, we will expand our funding sources beyond local authority contracts, targeting commissioners in new regions and health sectors. We will seek grants for R&D and support the development of Transceve, our AI-driven impact analysis company, to generate income through cross-subsidy.

Aim Four: Strengthening Our Storytelling and Influence

We will enhance our communications strategy to position Noise Solution as a specialist service for people with complex needs. By amplifying participant voices, engaging with key policymakers, and promoting our innovative approach, we will increase visibility, secure new opportunities, and advocate for high-quality alternative provision.

Our five target aims

Aim Five: Ensuring the Right Team and Tools for Growth

To support our expansion, we will invest in team capacity, recruit for key roles, and strengthen our board. We will improve operational efficiency, establish a permanent office base, and leverage Transceve’s AI capabilities to deepen our impact measurement and demonstrate return on investment to commissioners.

This is where we want to be by 2030: How can you help that happen?

Numbers are great but stories bring them to life (and we’ve got hundreds)

Whether it is a parent saying their child is no longer suicidal, or a participant saying we helped them overcome being electively mute, or a professional saying we transformed a young person, we never tire of hearing about the outcomes of the work

"In terms of interventions, it is probably the best intervention I have encountered. This programme transforms lives."
