2012/13 courses In the UK there are about 10 million who are deaf or hard of hearing, representing about one in six of the population. This is estimated to increase to 14.5 million by 2031.

Lip Reading Beginners The Essex Hard of Hearing Planning Group and Essex Adult Community Learning work together to develop a programme of lip reading classes across Essex for adults who have lost, or are losing, their hearing. For people who suffer hearing loss later in life, learning to lip read is a vital skill for maintaining communication, preventing social isolation and helping people to continue leading active and independent lives. Come along to one of our free taster sessions and find out about the basics of lip reading. Our tutors will also be able to provide you with other useful information about hearing loss and associated support services.

Lip Reading Improvers 2 hours for 25 weeks – Cost £29 EWM4C18 Wilson Marriage, Colchester, Thurs 6-8 pm, starting 04/10/2012 (This course is for learners who have attended at least 1 year of a taught course).

All learners who have attended lip reading taught classes at Essex ACL for 2 years, or who have gained good lip reading skills elsewhere, will be expected to move to a self-help group in order to practise their skills to make way for new learners. For more information, see contact details on following page. Classes are subsidised by government and ECC bursary funding enabling us to keep prices down to £29 for 50 hrs of tuition. This special rate is shown in our brochures as POA (Price on Application). If you have any additional funding requirements contact the appropriate Curriculum Manager to discuss financial support or alternative payment options – see contact details on following page. If you are an individual who requires a lip reading class in a part of Essex not currently supplied, please get in touch with us as, subject to demand, we may be able to consider courses in your area.
