I am a Mexican-French artist living in Barcelona, and I have a real love affair with paper. Nolvenn Le Goff: de la escultura en papel como una de las Bellas Artes Por Christian Obregón* El que no tiene memoria, se hace una de papel. Gabriel García Márquez

alardonada por el Concurso Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo, bARTcelona 2010, la producción actual de la artista franco-mexicana Nolvenn Le Goff (Ciudad de México, 1975) es una suerte de laboratorio alquímico donde la transmutación de la vida de la propia artista juega el papel de elemento clave a la hora de buscar la proliferación del binomio belleza-felicidad que rige toda su producción. A caballo entre el arte y el diseño, el trabajo reciente de Le Goff (materializado en las series Ciudades de Papel, Conjuntos Armoniosos y Alas) es un manifiesto escultórico, a través del cual la creadora ventila el amour fou que profesa hacia la materia prima de su obra: el papel. Consciente de la devaluación de la que ha sido objeto este material a lo largo de los siglos, Le Goff acierta un gancho al hígado al sistema económico poniendo en tela de juicio su principio más básico: la relación coste-precio-valor, esa triada a la sombra de la cual han prosperado contravenciones sociales como la inflación o la especulación y que en el ideario de Le Goff adquiere un significado contrario al integrar la variable tiempo como factor de cambio y plusvalía. Motivada por devolver su dignidad al papel como material Le Goff ha decidido llevar hasta el límite su producción en papel para transgredir, sí, los principios del mercado del arte, pero sobre todo para inocularle a éste valores como la belleza y la paciencia, en formato de iconos universales como edificios (Ciudades de Papel), patrones geométricos (Conjuntos Armoniosos) o bien alas de ángel, ave o Pegaso (Alas), ejes vertebrales de la mitología personalísima de la autora. Heredera del misticismo de la cultura mexicana por un lado y de la cultura céltica por el otro la artista imprime, quizás y hasta sin saberlo, un halo de magia, fantasía, preservación y pureza en cada una de las piezas de las series que aquí se presentan. Pero eso no es todo. Paralelamente al sistema de valores que da forma a estas tres series, Le Goff da en cada uno de sus trabajos un toque personal al asumirse como habitante de su propia utopía “hecha a base de empatía, solidaridad, equilibrio con la naturaleza y amor”, un statemet arriesgado y plausible, especialmente por erigirse como tal en tiempos del individualismo conectado. Si logra o no su cometido, es cuestión del espectador.

arning critical acclaim from bARTcelona in 2010, the International Contest of Contemporary Art, French-Mexican artist Nolvenn Le Goff’s (Ciudad de México, 1975) current compositions are kind of like an alchemist’s living laboratory, where the transmutation of the artist’s own life plays the role of a key element in the search of the proliferation of the binomial beauty-happiness that governs all of her productions. Saddled somewhere between art and design, Le Goff’s most recent work (materialized in the series Paper Cities, Harmonious Sets and Wings) is a sculptural manifest through which its creator professes the amour fou towards the raw material of her work: paper. Aware of the depreciation that this material has gone through over the course of centuries, Le Goff hits a hook to the economic system, calling into question its most basic principle: the relationship between cost-price-value, a triad behind which social contraventions, such as inflation or speculation, have flourished and where Le Goff’s ideology acquires an opposed meaning by integrating the variable time as a factor of change and surplus value. Motivated by restoring paper’s dignity as a material, Le Goff has decided to take her productions to their limits, and to transgress the principles of the art market, but most of all, to inoculate it with values such as beauty and patience in the format of universal icons like buildings (Paper Cities), geometric patterns (Harmonious Sets) or angel, bird or Pegasus wings (Wings), fundamental axes of the author’s very personal mythology. On one hand heiress of the mysticism of Mexican culture and on the other of the Celtic culture, Le Goff impregnates, perhaps even without knowing it, a halo of magic, fantasy, preservation and purity in each of the pieces in the series presented here. But that is not all. In parallel to the system’s values that shape this series, the artist brands each work piece with a personal touch by assuming herself as an inhabitant of her own utopia “made up of empathy and solidarity in balance with nature and love”, a daring and plausible statement, especially for raising as in such times of connected individualism. Whether or not the goal is achieved, then it remains only for the spectator to decide.

La necesidad de dominar a la naturaleza para favorecer la comodidad se ha llevado al extremo, alejándola cada vez mas de nuestras vidas cotidianas. Hemos creado un efecto burbuja donde nuestra percepción de la realidad se ha visto profundamente afectada.

El ser humano ha dejado de ser humano, para convertirse en un Dios omnipresente, dominador y transformador. Ya no debe competir con la naturaleza para sobrevivir, sino con otros dioses como él, en una lucha feroz por acumular bienes materiales y comodidades. Pero esto es una ilusión, aunque nos sintamos seguros en nuestros paraísos de hormigón, es la mano de la naturaleza quien verdaderamente nos sostiene. Aprender a mirar más allá de la burbuja, recuperar nuestro papel en el equilibrio de la naturaleza y apreciarla con su justo valor, deberían ser asuntos de primordial importancia en la agenda contemporánea.
De seguir así descubriremos que nuestras grandes ciudades son tan frágiles como el papel.

ities have always been considered a symbol of the greatness and power of the civilization.
Modern existence creates a complacency and a bubble effect where our perception of reality has been altered. We are no longer simple human beings; we have become an ubiquitous dominator of our physical world. Like gods, we accumulate material goods and comforts while forgetting our fragile origin. There is an illusion that we are safe in our man-made paradise, but it is the unseen forces of nature that truly sustain us. We must learn to look beyond the bubble, recover our role in the balance of nature, and appreciate the true value of her importance should be a must in the contemporary agenda.
If this continues, we will discover that our big cities are as fragile as paper.

umanos, plantas, animales, minerales, estrellas y galaxias, todos formamos parte de una misma unidad, un mismo Dios: Hunab Ku”, según los antiguos mayas. Encontramos patrones y proporciones que se repiten a macro y micro escala: la geometría sagrada insiste en demostrar la existencia de un origen común y a su vez la existencia de Dios, Madre Naturaleza, Gran Arquitecto, Big Bang, etc. Esta serie reflexiona sobre la unidad como punto de partida, pero formando parte del todo. El individuo como centro del mandala genera su propio universo y a través de las composiciones geométricas encuentra su lugar en la complejidad del universo. El objetivo es encontrar la armonía interior y exterior para lograr formar un conjunto armonioso.

ccording to the ancient Mayan people, humans, plants, animals, minerals, stars and galaxies, are all part of the god Hunab Ku. We find patterns and proportions at the macro and micro scale, repeated in ever ything around us : sacred geometr y is the evidence that everything has a common origin. It also ties together the existence of a creator among other names such as Mother Nature, God, the Great Architect, or the Big Bang, etc. This work, reflects on the unit as a starting point but without forgetting that it is part of the whole. An individual piece can be the centre of the mandala and generate its own universe through geometric compositions. The same piece also finds its place in the complexity of the entire composition. As we understand those concepts, our consciousness becomes compassionate with a higher level of respect to seek inner and outer harmony, in order to form a balanced whole.

stas alas individuales, de papel blanco y puro, son las primeras de una serie. Su pareja se materializará eventualmente bajo otra forma, posiblemente body art. Esta ceremonia será una obra de performance art en si misma. De carácter intimista, esta obra representa el mundo, filosofía de vida y momento en que se encuentra la artista tanto personal como artísticamente hablando.

hose individual wings of pure paper introduce a pairing. Eventually, the partner wing will materialize in another form, such as body art. This ceremony will be a performance piece. This work represents the artist’s most personal world, her philosophy on life and how she embrace it artistically.

Es necesario explorar esos nuevos lugares e ideas, tomar riesgos, salir de la zona de confort. Lo desconocido puede ser intimidante pero cosas maravillosas pueden pasar cuando tienes el corazรณn, los ojos y la mente abierta. You need to get out of your habits, your circles and finally go to those places (physicals and psychological) that you want to explore. Take risk! The unknown can be daunting, yet when there is an open heart, eyes and mind wonderful things can happen.

e origen mexicano y francés, Nolvenn viaja a Barcelona en 2005 para realizar un Máster en Marketing después de cursar la Licenciatura en Diseño Gráfico y dos especialidades en la Escuela de Diseño del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes de México en Diseño Editorial, Multimedia y Creatividad Publicitaria. En el año 2010, Nolvenn toma la decisión de probarse a sí misma e iniciar su recorrido formal por el mundo del arte. Se cuestiona sobre el papel del artista, los temas que le interesan y de la manera de reflejarlos en sus proyectos futuros. Este año nacen dos de ellos basados en sus inquietudes medioambientales: uno de corte lúdico basado en el reciclaje artístico y las Ciudades de Papel. Estas Ciudades de Papel han sido uno de sus proyectos más gratificantes, tanto a nivel técnico y estético como conceptual. Las ciudades ganan un concurso de arte contemporáneo internacional (bARTcelona, 2010), le permiten pasar 2 meses de residencia artística en el ecomuseo La Papeterie de Vaux, en Francia (2012) y participar en el Salón de arte Art en Capital, en el Grand Palais de Paris en 2012. Los sueños continúan y en 2014 Nolvenn funda Talent Lab, una pequeña galería/ taller en Barcelona. Ahora ya tiene un espacio donde encontrarse con el público y otros artistas y donde realizar obras más complejas. Es la hora de buscar nuevos proyectos. El descubrimiento de la geometría sagrada gracias a las largas charlas con uno de los artistas que frecuentan Talent Lab, la llevan a trabajar en su nuevo proyecto: Conjuntos Armoniosos. Este nuevo proyecto, puramente geométrico, pretende concienciar que todos compartimos un origen común y que nuestras acciones afectan tanto al conjunto como a nosotros mismos. Para Nolvenn la principal obra de un artista es su propia vida y sus obras son simplemente el reflejo de esta. Desde niña ha soñado con hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor. Ha descubierto que con una sonrisa se puede cambiar al mundo, que el ejemplo vale más que cualquier discurso y que la tolerancia, la paciencia y el amor son lo único que puede transformar a la humanidad y llevar la luz a los lugares mas oscuros. Hasta ahora todos sus proyectos están basados en una filosofía de vida, pero estas reflexiones y la evolución personal de la artista la llevaron a su última obra: Las Alas. Se trata de su serie más personal e intimista. Estas alas están llenas de simbolismos y alegorías personales: el ala de ángel representa los valores y la pureza que Nolvenn intenta mantener en su vida personal. Va contra corriente
en un mundo donde el individualismo y la inmediatez parece primar. El ala de Pegaso representa el mundo de fantasía y misticismo que le sirve de refugio y donde encuentra la fuerza para seguir sus sueños. El ala de ave representa el punto de inflexión actual de su vida, donde la madurez parece haber llegado. Es el momento de abrir las alas y volar, de sacudirse los miedos y las dudas, de saltar al vacío teniendo la firme convicción de que todo saldrá bien. Ha llegado el momento de abandonar la seguridad del nido, del trabajo remunerado, del lugar de domicilio para emprender el vuelo y descubrir que tan lejos puede llegar. Mariana Pineda

alf French and half Mexican, Nolvenn le Goff relocated to Barcelona in 2005 from her native Mexico City in order to complete her Masters in Marketing. Nolvenn previously majored in Graphic design and two specialist degrees, multimedia with creative advertising and editorial design, both completed at the Design School of the National Institute of Fine Arts of Mexico. In 2010 Nolvenn decided to make her entrance into the world of fine arts. She questioned her role as an artist, subjects and themes that interested her and how she could reflect them in her future projects. During this period, she embarked on 2 projects dealing with her concern for environmental issues: one being an artistic recycling project and other titled Paper Cities, which was one of her most rewarding projects due to the visual and technical development. Paper Cities won 3rd place at the bARTcelona International Contemporary Art Reward in 2010. Nolvenn continued to gain recognition for Paper Cities when she was granted a two months art residency at the eco-museum Papeterie de Vaux in France. One of her residency pieces went on to be shown at the Salon d’art Art en Capital, at the Grand Palais de Paris in 2012. Pursuing her dreams further, Nolvenn founded Talent Lab in 2014, a small gallery and studio space in Barcelona. Talent Lab became a meeting point for artists and the public to grow and inspire each other and a place to create new and bigger projects. One of these artists introduced Nolvenn to the world of sacred geometry, inspiring her next project: Harmonious Sets. This new project, purely geometric, seeks to raise awareness that we all share a common origin and that our actions affect the whole and ourselves. For Nolvenn the main work of an artist is their own life, and their work is simply the reflection of it. Since childhood, Nolvenn dreamed of making this world a better place. She discovered that you can change the world with a smile and that exemplary behaviors are worth more than any speech and that tolerance, patience and love are the only things that can transform humanity and bring light to the darkest places. So far, all her projects are based on a philosophy of life, but these reflections and the personal evolution of the artist led her to her latest work: The Wing. This is her most personal and intimate series. The Wing is full of symbolism and metaphors: the wing of an angel represents the values and the purity that Nolvenn tries to maintain in her personal life, a push to go against the social norm, where selfishness seems to prevail. The Pegasus Wing represents the world of fantasy, magic and mysticism that serves as Nolvenn’s place of refuge and inspiration to follow her dreams. The Bird Wing represents a current period in her life, where maturity has arrived. It is the moment to open her wings and fly, to shake the fear and the doubts, and jump into the emptiness, while knowing everything will come out well. The moment has arrived to leave the security of the nest, the safety of a salaried work environment, to begin the flight and discover how far her wings will take her. Mariana Pineda
