WHAT DOES NOMAD DO?

Dear Divers of the World, For the past 7 years Nomad has successfully been running dive tours on a group basis. Due to the growth of the worldwide diving market and a rising demand we decided to launch a new range of scheduled diving tours in 2017. We took the best of our South African land based programs, which represent some of the finest wildlife experiences, and combined them with the pinnacle of diving in South Africa and, arguably the best apex predator diving in the world. This series contains a range of products spanning 4 to 25 days across 60 departures. To put it simply, guests have the chance to see the Big 5 in Kruger National Park and combine it with the top predators of the ocean. Tick a bucket list item on the sardine run, travel the renowned Garden Route and take in some whale watching at Hermanus before ending your trip face to face with a Great White Shark. Whether you are a diver looking to add some land adventures or a land lover who likes to dive, we are sure you will find a combination that ticks your boxes. 2017 was a fantastic Sharks and Sardine Run season with many unforgettable experiences had by many. Here’s hoping that 2018 delivers the same amazing adventures. Sea you on the road Alex Rutherford Founder and Owner TOURS AND SAFARIS

HOW DO ADVENTURE TOURS WORK?

Travelling with Nomad means friendship, fun and adventure plus the security that group travel brings. Our unrivalled experience in Africa also ensures your holiday is well planned to make the most of our spectacular continent. All Nomad adventures are ‘off the beaten track’ and the emphasis is on the journey, as well as the destination. Unexpected events are part of the package and often add to your real-Africa experience.

WHO SHOULD, AND DOES, GO ON NOMAD DIVE TOUR?

NON-DIVERS ON TOUR

In the past, groups tended to be very young as the majority of

travellers to Africa were backpackers. As Africa has become

The Best Guides

Nomad Dive Tours have been created to include many

the group and enjoying the land based aspects of the tour.

DIVE CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE LEVELS Diving in Africa ranges from gentle 5m dives with seals through to more challenging currents and 30m depths. Divers must be comfortable with conditions that include currents, swell, possibly rough boat journeys, negative entries and large species swimming up close and personal. For that reason Nomad Dive has set a minimum certification level of Advanced Open Water (or equivalent).

Non-divers can sit back and enjoy relaxing mornings on the beach or with a good book, or take advantage of optional activities whilst divers are out. If you have a diving partner or family member you don’t feel that you need to miss out on this trip and can come along knowing that there is something for

The Best Trucks

everyone.

WHAT’S INCLUDED, WHAT’S NOT, AND WHY? There are always extra activities that you can do, but at Nomad there are no hidden costs and you remain in control

WHAT TO EXPECT? The days usually start early and end late, although a lot of time is spent travelling, we do cram a lot into every day. An average day on tour begins around 6am and departure is after breakfast at around 7am. We lose approximately 5 hours of daylight in winter so it may happen that some optional activities are not available then. We usually take a lunch-break en-route and depending on the distance to be covered, afternoons are often spent relaxing or exploring the lay of the land. Our guides do all the cooking. However, you are welcome to ask the guides if you are keen to share your culinary skills with the group. The more you get involved, the better the group experience.

HOW TO DECIDE WHICH TOUR With so many tour options it can be hard to decide which tour suits you and when to travel. South Africa is blessed with year round diving. However some highlights are seasonal and you may want to consider what the best time of year is for your most desired species. Winter months see aggregating Raggies, Whales and predation and breaching of Great Whites. In summer months Hammerheads arrive in their thousands. Water temperatures range from as low as 14° in winter to 27° in summer. Visibility is often better during the cooler months but averages between 5-25m year around. You may have a specific amount of time available to you. Our tours run from 4-25 days so you should find one that suits you.

“Mighty lions, giant elephants, majestic rhinos, giraffes as tall as trees, monkeys swinging from branches, eagles and vultures circling through the skies, massive whale sharks, bull sharks, dolphins, schooling hammerheads and seeing mantas glide through the water are just some of the highlights of our South African dive tour! The Nomad team were incredible. The food was amazing, the travelling fun and well organised and our accommodations were always comfortable and clean. It was the trip of a lifetime and I would do it all over again. Thanks Nomad and Fern Perry for memories that will last me forever.” Vanessa Lill, Scotland

of your choices and finances. What’s included? Transport in our specialised vehicles, the services of two qualified guides, meals, accommodation, specified activities and most National Park fees.

What’s not included? Visas, vaccinations, items of a personal nature, alcohol, drinks, bottled water, snacks, activity packages and optional activities.

The Best Dive Sites

All of our diving itineraries include cylinder and weights. For those divers who do not have their own equipment, rental can be arranged. Each tour will state the equipment rental price for all dives on the tour. Please note that you will either need to have a full set of gear, or pay for the rental of a full set. Individual items are not rented independently.

WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY PACKAGE (AP) FOR? This is an optional additional payment that covers what we consider to be essential activities on our tours. Ideally, we would include all of these but not everyone can afford this. This payment is 100% transparent and is listed within the itinerary of the tour. If you cannot afford it, or do not want to

The Best Reputation

do the Activity Package, rest assured that your tour will remain uninterrupted and meals and the services of the guides will continue. All the itineraries in this brochure are written with the Activity Packages included. It is vitally important that you prebook and pre-pay your activity Package along with your tour as we cannot guarantee availability of the items, should you only book this with your guide on the morning of departure. “I enjoyed the South African Dive Tour as a non-diver. Some friends were going and convinced me it would be fun. I was concerned about how much time I would be on my own whilst the others were diving but this trip was incredible. The safari was amazing and there were animals everywhere in Kruger. The accommodation was also great. I was able to enjoy lazy mornings with my book on diving days and by lunch time the group would be back and we could all have fun together. I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to join a diving or family member. You will not be disappointed even though you stay dry.” Diane Somerton, Australia

The trucks on tour are a major component of all adventure tours. These tours are road trips and incorporate long drives, bumpy roads and possible mechanical problems, also, digging your truck out of mud is sometimes considered a highlight. Nomad’s custom built adventure trucks are fully stocked before every tour, insuring the vehicle is ready for an epic adventure. Nomad vehicles are amongst some of the finest on the road however do not forget the nature of an adventure tour, it is not a city to city coach liner trip and there is no air-conditioning or toilets on the truck. Day 1 - East London to Coffee Bay Leaving the city of East London behind, we travel north along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape to the small town of Coffee Bay, our launch site for the famous Sardine Run. After settling into your hotel you will have the chance to explore this stunning area and visit the iconic “Hole In The Wall”. This evening you will have a full briefing on the operating of the Sardine Run adventure over the next few days. Day 2/3/4/5/6 - Sardine Run The annual Great Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon that usually occurs during the months of June and July, when massive schools of sardines migrate from the colder waters around the Cape to the warmer waters of Kwa-Zulu Natal to give birth to their offspring. Once they’ve laid their eggs, they return to the Cape, closely followed by thousands of dolphins, birds, fish of prey, whales and sharks. The ocean awakes and the thrill is simply indescribable. After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to Mapusi, the most spectacular, idyllic river mouth from where we launch our boat. On the banks of this river, divers get ready for the launch. In the meantime our plane has taken off and done a good fly over in search of animal activity. The skipper and the pilot are in constant radio contact whereby the boat gets directed to the best action on hand. Sardine Run Action consists not only of silver fish but more so of activities such as whales, dolphins, sharks and gannets. Wherever there is something happening the boat will go.

Bottle Nose Dolphin

Each day we will launch (weather permitting) and spend a full day out at sea to give you the best chance of action. We return by early to late afternoon each day when you will get a chance to rest, relax, hike the area and charge those all important cameras. Day 7 - Coffee Bay to East London Today we will retrace our steps from Coffee Bay back to the town of East London, where your tour comes to an end upon arrival at the East London airport. Please ensure you book your flights for as late as possible in the afternoon.

Did you know?

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is nearly a century old? Before then, the only way up the mountain was by foot and only the most adventurous. On 4 October 1929, after two years of difficult and dangerous work, the first Cable Car chugged its way to the top.

One of the oldest traditions in Cape Town is still startling visitors at midday - every day. An old cannon at the top of Signal Hill is fired off, sending a resounding boom around the CBD. It was originally meant to announce approaching ships, to let traders know it was time to haul their wares to the harbour.

After a dive briefing you will board the boat and head out for your two dives of the day, one with the ever playful Cape Fur Seals and another with the 7 Gilled Cow Shark. Kelp Forest Dive One of our more popular kelp forest sites is at Pyramid Rock where we have a good possibility of encountering the Sevengill shark, which is also called the Cow shark or Broadnose Sevengill. The maximum depth is only 12 meters making it ideal for beginner and junior divers to join. The shallow depths and picturesque environment makes this the ideal environment for photographers aiming to capture these sharks in their natural habitat. The Cow sharks aggregate in the shallow channel between Pyramid Rock and the shore and their curious and inquisitive nature means there is no baiting involved and we rely solely on a specific area where these animals are known to aggregate. Aside from the main attraction, the kelp forest is a beautiful environment to explore. Cape Fur Seal Dive The Cape Fur Seal dive is a super fun and interactive dive and one of the signature dives that Cape Town has offered for more than two decades. The seals are very playful and love to show their acrobatic skills to divers. These seals are used to divers and are not shy at all, they will often jump in the water in large numbers to come and investigate and play with divers. We dive at Partridge Point, an exposed haul-out spot for seals. There are times when the water can be rough at the site due to waves or currents. A shallow section of the reef, known as the amphitheater, is the best spot to interact with the Seals. The deeper sections of the reef offer beautiful marine life, swim-throughs and large sea fans.

Each morning we will travel the hour from our Dive House in Margate to the launch site for Aliwal Shoal. Over the two days we will do 3 recreational dives on the Aliwal Shoal, including the famous “Raggie Cave”. The optional baited shark dive is well worth it, with Oceanic Black-Tip Sharks gathering in large numbers and possibly Tiger Sharks investigating the bait. Key Dive Sites CATHEDRAL: A very popular dive for the Ragged Tooth Shark enthusiast. During the “Raggie” season it is possible to see up to 40 of these placid sharks resting within the amphitheater. During the summer months look out for hammerheads above and see the stingrays that take up residence when the Raggies depart.
RAGGIES CAVE: As its name suggests this is the best place to view the Ragged Tooth Sharks during the shark season. Entry into the cave is not permitted when the sharks are here but there is an excellent viewing area at the entrance where divers can safely kneel and watch the sharks’ activities. OUTSIDE EDGE: This is the dive site for viewing the big stuff, and it is always a good idea to keep an eye out at midwater where schools of hammerheads, game fish or the odd tiger shark may be found.
EELSKINS: This dive site is superb example of the fossilized rock formations. Situated near the southwestern tip of the reef there are lots of clusters of reef with plenty of sand gullies and lovely swim-through. Many cowries can be found here and as the gullies offer shelter from the currents you will often find Raggies during the season and lots of shoaling tropical fish.

NORTH EASTERN PINNACLES: A very easy and gentle dive site for open water divers and beginners. Lots of potholes forming sheltered nurseries for small fish. Many anemones and clown fish are to be found here as well as octopus. You may see some large potato bass sheltering from the current.
NORTH SANDS AND SOUTH SANDS: These two large sand patches are an ideal location for students to practice their skills and for divers to descend and pause to adjust buoyancy before exploring the reef. An ideal pace to find sand sharks and often groups of dolphins can be found playing and rubbing themselves on the sand. Truly an amazing sight!
MANTA POINT: Lots of nooks and crannies where crayfish and cleaner shrimp hide. Good area to find rays of all varieties especially Manta Rays during the season. Day 11 - Durban Durban has long been the favourite holiday destination for South Africans, the golden mile with its warm seas and safe swimming beaches attracts visitors throughout the year. This afternoon we have time to spend on the beaches of the golden mile.

Kruger National Park

THE SARDINE BAIT BALL The sharks and dolphins round up a large number of sardines and form what is known as a bait ball. Once the bait ball is formed, the sharks and dolphins swim through that ball until not one sardine is left. They are often joined by gannets, which dive from a dizzy height and use their wings to actually swim further down in pursuit of a sardine. Then comes a Brydes Whale from the depth and like a Front End Loader scoops thousands of sardines into its gullet. As divers, we first approach the situation carefully and watch from the boat what is going on. Then we slide into the water and watch the incredible scene from a depth of approximately 5-7m. Such a Bait Ball can last from a few minutes, to half an hour, or even longer. When it is over its back on the boat and off to the next group of sardines. This can go on for hours or even the whole day with a short lunch break in between. Day 18 - Coffee Bay to East London Today we will retrace our steps from Coffee Bay back to the town of East London, where your tour comes to an end upon arrival at the East London airport. Please ensure you book your flights for as late as possible in the afternoon.

Over the next three days we will have 5 dives on the Protea Banks Reef where we hope to see some of the world’s largest marine predators. During these three days you will also be offered a baited shark dive. Diving both North and South Pinnacles we will have the chance to collect Sand Tiger Shark teeth and explore caves, swim-throughs and tunnels. An optional Tiger and Bull Shark baited dive at Protea Banks will be offered during our stay. This dive takes place in open water, hanging in the blue whilst, possible Tiger, Bull, Hammerhead and Oceanic Black-Tip sharks come in to investigate the scent trail around us. Day 23/24 - Aliwal Shoal The following two days we spend diving the equally famous Aliwal Shoal. Renowned for Raggie Tooth Sharks congregating in their hundreds, dolphins and the baited shark dive.
