WHAT DOES NOMAD DO?
Dear Fellow Divers We are very happy to announce that the expanded and upgraded African dive programme has been a huge success thus-far in 2018. We are also excited to advise that due to popular demand we have added Mozambique as well as Zanzibar and Mafia islands to our portfolio of dive adventures for 2019. We have taken some of our best Southern and Eastern Africa land based programs that have been developed over 22 years and combined them with the pinnacle of diving in South Africa and, arguably the best apex predator diving in the world. This series contains a range of products spanning 4 to 27 days, across 22 different tour options. Simply put, guests have the chance to see the Big 5 in Kruger National Park and combine it with the top predators of the ocean. Tick a bucket list item on the Sardine Run, travel the renowned Garden Route and take in some whale watching at Hermanus before ending your trip face to face with a Great White Shark just outside the world famous Cape Town. Whether you are a diver looking to add some land adventures or a land lover who likes to dive, we are sure you will find a combination that ticks your boxes. “Sea” you on the road Alex Rutherford

WHY CHOOSE NOMAD?
HOW DO ADVENTURE TOURS WORK?
Choosing the right adventure company is important. It can mean the difference between the trip of a lifetime or a tour that doesn’t meet your expectations. Adventure companies are not all the same.
WHY CHOOSE NOMAD? Nomad’s story began over 22 years ago when Alex Rutherford, founder and owner of Nomad, undertook a trans-Africa expedition lasting almost a year. On that journey he encountered numerous companies offering trips to Africa. A niche was noticed between strictly budget tours and the more upmarket operations. It was on that trip that the founding principle of Nomad was formed: Do it better and do it for less. “In those days we had one truck, 2 employees and one departure a month. Over the years we’ve grown to a fleet of around 60 vehicles, 150 staff and 70 scheduled departures a month all over Africa. Our success rests on consistently maintaining high standards in all aspects of our operation, while still retaining the magic and passion that saw us grow so successfully. We have not forgotten the lessons learned in the early days. Still wholly independent, we remain owner-managed and operated ensuring passionate attention to quality tours every single day.” ALEX RUTHERFORD

Diving in Africa ranges from gentle 5m dives with seals through to more challenging currents and 30m depths. Divers must be comfortable with conditions that include currents, swell, possibly rough boat journeys, negative entries and large species swimming up close and personal. For that reason Nomad Dive has set a minimum certification level of Advanced Open Water (or equivalent).
WHAT TO EXPECT? The days usually start early and end late, although a lot of time is spent travelling, we do cram a lot into every day. An average day on tour begins around 6am and departure is after breakfast at around 7am. We lose approximately 5 hours of daylight in winter so it may happen that some optional activities are not available then. We usually take a lunch-break en-route and depending on the distance to be covered, afternoons are often spent relaxing or exploring the lay of the land. Our guides do all the cooking. However, you are welcome to ask the guides if you are keen to share your culinary skills with the group. The more you get involved, the better the group experience.
HOW TO DECIDE WHICH TOUR With so many tour options it can be hard to decide which tour suits you and when to travel. South Africa is blessed with year round diving. NON-DIVERS ON TOUR Nomad Dive Tours have been created to include many highlights, both above and below the surface. Africa is a continent of great beauty and has much to offer, from the quintessential African safari animals, to the majestic scenery, unique culture and traditional foods and drinks. Our dive tours include as much variety as possible and many activities in addition to diving. Diving days are structured for early morning dives, meaning that by lunch time non-divers are back with the

meals, accommodation, specified activities and most National Park fees. Our group departures will also include a dedicated Nomad Dive Guide.
What’s not included?
The Best Trucks
Visas, vaccinations, items of a personal nature, alcohol, drinks, bottled water, snacks, activity packages and optional activities. All of our diving itineraries include cylinder and weights. For those divers who do not have their own equipment, rental can be arranged. Each tour will state the equipment rental price for all dives on the tour. Please note that you will either need to have a full set of gear, or pay for the rental of a full set. Individual items are not rented independently.
WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY PACKAGE (AP) FOR? This is an optional additional payment that covers what we consider to be essential activities on our tours. Ideally, we would include all of these but not everyone can afford this.
The Best Dive Sites
This payment is 100% transparent and is listed within the itinerary of the tour. If you cannot afford it, or do not want to do the Activity Package, rest assured that your tour will remain uninterrupted and meals and the services of the guides will continue. All the itineraries in this brochure are written with the Activity Packages included. It is vitally important that you prebook and pre-pay your Activity Package along with your tour as we cannot guarantee availability of the items, should you only book this with your guide on the morning of departure.

Travelling with Nomad means friendship, fun and adventure plus the security that group travel brings. “Mighty lions, giant elephants, majestic rhinos, giraffes as tall as trees, monkeys swinging from branches, eagles and vultures circling through the skies, massive whale sharks, bull sharks, dolphins, schooling hammerheads and seeing mantas glide through the water are just some of the highlights of our South African dive tour! The Nomad team were incredible. The food was amazing, the travelling fun and well organised and our accommodations were always comfortable and clean. It was the trip of a lifetime and I would do it all over again. Thanks Nomad and Fern Perry for memories that will last me forever.” Vanessa Lill, Scotland “I enjoyed the South African Dive Tour as a non-diver. Some friends were going and convinced me it would be fun. I was concerned about how much time I would be on my own whilst the others were diving but this trip was incredible. The safari was amazing and there were animals everywhere in Kruger. The accommodation was also great. I was able to enjoy lazy mornings with my book on diving days and by lunch time the group would be back and we could all have fun together. I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to join a diving or family member. You will not be disappointed even though you stay dry.” Diane Somerton, Australia

VEHICLES & EQUIPMENT
NOMAD DIVE GROUPS SCHEDULED & GROUPS – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
The trucks on tour are a major component of all adventure tours. These tours are road trips and incorporate long drives, bumpy roads and possible mechanical problems. Digging your truck out of mud is sometimes considered a highlight. Nomad’s custom built adventure trucks are fully stocked before every tour, insuring the vehicle is ready for an epic adventure. Nomad vehicles are amongst some of the finest on the road however do not forget the nature of an adventure tour, it is not a city to city coach liner trip and there is no air-conditioning or toilets on the truck. Chat to your fellow travellers, play cards and enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Using your time on the road wisely will make the hours tick by faster.
Scheduled Scheduled tours are trips that have listed departure dates and are open for anyone to book onto. Most of these tours require only 4 people to have booked in order to confirm the departure. Nomad Dive have selected what we believe to be some of the best times of year for each tour and have several date options for you to choose from. If you are not travelling in a larger group these are the tours that will suit you. Each tour has a maximum of 20 people on board. You will enjoy the support of Nomad guides on each tour. At each dive location there will be a dive guide provided for you. When not accompanied by Nomad guides you will be provided with detailed tour documentation to ensure the seamless transition between activities.
Shade Net & Large Windows
Groups Nomad Dive offers private group bookings on all of our tour itineraries, for the same prices, with a minimum of 9 passengers. For every 9 people that book in one group we will offer 1 free place (our East Africa tours offer a 9 + 1 @ 50%). Our groups have a maximum of 20 people. Should you have more than 20 people we are happy to tailor a tour to meet your needs. Should you not be confident that your group will have a minimum of 9 we suggest that you book one of our scheduled departures. Alternatively our private groups specialists will be happy to provide you with a detailed quote.

Day 1 - East London to Coffee Bay Leaving the city of East London behind us we travel north along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape to the small town of Coffee Bay, our launch site for the famous Sardine Run. After settling into your hotel you will have the chance to explore this stunning area and visit the iconic “Hole In The Wall”. This evening you will have a full briefing on the operation of the Sardine Run adventure over the next few days. Day 2/3/4/5/6 - Sardine Run The annual Great Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon which usually occurs during the months of June and July, when massive schools of sardines migrate from the colder waters around the Cape to the warmer waters of Kwa-Zulu Natal to give birth to their offspring. Once they’ve laid their eggs, they return to the Cape, closely followed by thousands of dolphins, birds, fish of prey, whales and sharks. The ocean awakes and the thrill is simply indescribable. After an early breakfast you will be transferred to Mapusi, the most spectacular, idyllic river mouth from where we launch our boat. On the banks of this river, divers get ready for the launch. In the meantime the plane has taken off and done a good fly over in search of animal activity. The skipper and the pilot are in constant radio contact whereby the boat gets directed to the best action on hand. Sardine run action consists not only of silver fish, but more so of activities such as whales, dolphins, sharks and gannets. Wherever there is something happening, the boat will go. Each day we will launch (weather permitting) and spend a full day out at sea to give you the best chance of action. We return by latest 3pm each afternoon when you will get a chance to rest, relax, hike the area and charge those all important cameras.

Day 11 Coffee Bay to East London or Johannesburg if purchasing our Activity Package Today we will retrace our steps from Coffee Bay back to the town of East London (where we will board a flight to the City of Johannesburg. Our tour will end on arrival into Johannesburg International Airport).

Day 7 - Durban - East London and Coffee Bay This morning we will fly to the Eastern Cape town of East London. Leaving the city of East London behind us we travel north along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape to the small town of Coffee Bay, our launch site for the famous Sardine Run. After settling into your hotel you will have the chance to explore this stunning area and visit the iconic “Hole In The Wall”. This evening you will have a full breifing on the operation of the Sardine Run adventure over the next few days. Day 8/9/10/11/12/13 - Sardine Run The annual Great Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon which usually occurs during the months of June and July, when massive schools of sardines migrate from the colder waters around the Cape to the warmer waters of Kwa-Zulu Natal to give birth to their offspring. Day 14 - Coffee Bay to East London (Johannesburg if purchasing our Activity Package) Today we will retrace our steps from Coffee Bay back to the town of East London (where we will board a flight to the City of Johannesburg. Our tour will end on arrival into Johannesburg International Airport).

Day 1 - Johannesburg to Kruger National Park Leaving the city of Johannesburg behind us we make our way north east through the coalfields of Mpumalanga. Our journey today follows in the footsteps of the old trade-routes to the Lowveld and the Kruger National Park. We set up camp at our base for the next three nights and enjoy a lovely sundowner drive.
The skipper and the pilot are in constant radio contact so that the boat gets directed to the best action. Sardine run action consists of whales, dolphins, sharks and gannets. Wherever there is something happening, the boat will go. Each day we will launch (weather permitting) and spend a full day out at sea to give you the best chance of action. We return by latest 3pm each afternoon when you will get a chance to rest, relax, hike the area and charge those all important cameras.
Day 2 - Kruger National Park This morning we enter the Kruger National Park for a full-day of game viewing. Our activity package offers you the opportunity to explore the park in open game viewing vehicles, giving you access to areas our truck can’t always go.
THE SARDINE BAIT BALL The sharks and dolphins round up a large number of sardines and form what is known as a bait ball. Once the bait ball is formed, the sharks and dolphins swim through that ball until not one sardine is left. They are often joined by gannets, which dive from a dizzy height and use their wings to actually swim further down in pursuit of a sardine.
Day 3 - Kruger National Park - Panorama Route As is customary when on safari, we rise early this morning to enjoy a guided bush walk. Being in the bush on foot offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the smaller details of this great wilderness area. After our walk, we exit the park and journey along the scenic Panorama Route where we will visit God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels. We return to camp in the evening to enjoy a lovely local dinner and dance. Day 4 - Kruger National Park to Johannesburg We enjoy our last drive through the park before setting off to Belvedere Estate. We arrive at Belvedere Estate and all travellers are invited to join us for a traditional meal tonight. Day 5 - Johannesburg to Margate This morning we fly from Johannesburg to the coastal town of Durban, where we will join our new Nomad truck and crew. Leaving the city of Durban behind us we make our way south along the dolphin coast of Kwazulu Natal. About 2 hours south of Durban is the launch site for both Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks, home to some of the best Apex Predator shark diving. We arrive at our hotel and settle in for our stay. This afternoon we will check all dive equipment, ensure the correct gear is allocated and have a dive briefing for the following days.
Then comes a Brydes Whale from the depth and like a Front End Loader scoops thousands of sardines into its gullet. As divers, we first approach the situation carefully and watch from the boat what is going on. Then we slide into the water and watch the incredible scene from a depth of approximately 5-7m. Such a Bait Ball can last from a few minutes, to half an hour, or even longer. When it is over its back on the boat and off to the next group of sardines. This can go on for hours or even the whole day with a short lunch break in between.
