WHAT DOES NOMAD DO?
Dear Fellow Travellers, In 1997 Nomad was born with the basic founding philosophy of "doing it better, and doing it for less".
While almost twenty years have passed and much has
If you dream of having an authentic African adventure, a Nomad tour is one of the best ways to achieve it. We organise and plan everything for you, leaving you free to relax and really enjoy your African experience.
changed, this approach remains a cornerstone of what, and how, we do things at Nomad. Quality and value for money drive everyone and everyday at Nomad.
35 million kilometers, 10 500 tours and 105 000 people later, I can safely say that I truly believe we deliver, and will continue to deliver, on this promise.
2016 has proven to be our best year yet. We've run more guests on more tours and

Camping or Accommodated – What’s the difference? Our accommodated tours fill the gap between a camping experience and an expensive lodge tour while our camping tours allow you to have a truly African experience. On all of our tours (excluding the Cape Town to Victoria Falls and sections) we have both camping and accommodated guests travelling together. All meals are prepared at the truck, you have the same guides and the travel times are all the same so that literally is the only decision that you have to make – a bed or a tent. Camping gives you the freedom to build your own home every evening. We provide you with heavy duty canvas dome tents which are standing height (unless you’re over 6 foot) and approximately 2.5 x 2.5m across the base. On a camping tour, you need to provide your own pillow, sleeping bag and towel. The tents are easy to put up and have flexible self-supporting poles and there are no unnecessary pegs to fight with. There is a fly-sheet provided for rainy weather and a built-in mosquito net. We also provide everyone with a sleeping mattress. On Accommodated tours, you can expect 2 – 4 star twin / double accommodation and the majority of it is en-suite. In some places, we also make use of permanent safari tents
4
When starting or ending your tour, we always advise that you arrive the day before your tour is set to depart and leave the day after your tour ends. We can recommend and book a number of hotels for you. These properties are usually very close to our departure/end points and will make planning your trip a lot easier.

which are considered “accommodation”. The truck will remain in the area where the campers are. On camping tours, single supplements are optional. However, on accommodated tours, single supplements are compulsory if you are travelling on your own.
Tailormade Holidays and Group Packages Our specialised Tailormade department can pretty much cater to any requirement you may have and can assist you to put together the dream holiday of a lifetime, whatever your budget. Our extensive experience ensures we have access to a variety of options. Read more about what we can offer you on page 6. Our experience and expertise throughout Africa allows us to be able to create unique group tours for any number of travellers. We regularly do this for both private individuals and companies. For these tours we offer a range of transport options from our standard adventure trucks, to minivans, 4x4’s and even trains and planes. From 2 to 5 star, we do it all. Examples of what we can do and more information is provided on page 6.

HOW DO ADVENTURE TOURS WORK?
Travelling with Nomad means friendship, fun and adventure plus the security that group travel brings. Our unrivalled experience in Africa also ensures your holiday is well planned to make the most of our spectacular continent. All Nomad adventures are ‘off the beaten track’ and the emphasis is on the journey, as well as the destination. Unexpected events are part of the package and often add to your real-Africa experience.
WHO SHOULD, AND DOES, GO ON AN ADVENTURE TOUR? In the past, groups tended to be very young as the majority of travellers to Africa were backpackers. As Africa has become a progressively more mainstream destination (Africa today is far more accessible than 19 years ago) our guests have also changed. 19 years ago the average age of our travellers was around 23-27 years old and now we have anyone from 8-80 years of age, travelling with us. The average age of our campers is approximately 20-45 and our accommodated guests vary between 30-60 years of age. However, these indications are very general as each and every tour is different and campers and accommodated guests travel together. Part of experiencing the tour is about meeting new people and what we can confirm is that 99% of our travellers find that they get along very well.
WHAT TO EXPECT? The days usually start early and end late, although a lot of time is spent travelling, we do cram a lot into every day. Expect some frustrations. You are in Africa and things do not always work that well sometimes. Coming on tour with an open mind, flexible attitude and realistic expectations will ensure you have a great time. An average day on tour begins around 6am and departure is after breakfast at around 7am. There are some mornings that need a very early start to reach our next destination, or to photograph a spectacular African sunrise – it’s all part of the adventure. Prepare yourself for the worst, especially in winter when days are shorter. We lose approximately 5 hours of daylight in winter so it may happen that you’re setting up your tent in the dark or that some optional activities are not available then. We usually take a lunch-break en-route and depending on the distance to be covered, afternoons are often spent relaxing or exploring the lay of the land. Usually every few days, we will spend a couple of nights at one venue to break the travel routine. Distances between highlights are often on a bigger scale than those at home, particularly in East Africa. Often there is absolutely nothing between focal points except vast open deserts. Most tours average approximately 450 km per day however there can be stretches of up to 600km in a single day and that’s a long way in a truck, so be prepared! Our guides do all the cooking. However, you are welcome to ask the guides if you are keen to share your culinary skills with the group. The more you get involved, the better the group experience, and not doing your dishes is not a great way to make friends. Although we do most of the work, a little assistance from the group can make a real difference as it means that the guides have more time to spend with the group.
HOW TO DECIDE WHICH TOUR
image The Best Guides
Often people who are not experienced with Africa and/or Adventure tours find the amount of information and choices confusing. To simplify matters we suggest the following: Decide on whether you want to visit East or Southern Africa. Simply put, the South is ideal for first time visitors to Africa as it is generally an easier journey with better infrastructure, while East Africa requires a more “rough & ready” attitude. Check our highlights pages to help make your decision. Then decide between camping or accommodated options and finally, the duration of your trip. One week, two weeks, three weeks or longer. Although Nomad offers over 100 different tours by following these steps your choices will be reduced to around 6 or 7 options.
WHAT’S INCLUDED, WHAT’S NOT, AND WHY? There are always extra activities that you can do, but at Nomad there are no hidden costs and you remain in control of your choices and finances.
image The Best Trucks
image
What’s included? Transport in our specialised vehicles, the services of two qualified guides, meals, accommodation, specified activities and most National Park fees.
The Best Equipment
What’s not included? Visas, vaccinations, items of a personal nature, alcohol, drinks, bottled water, snacks, activity packages and optional activities.
WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY PACKAGE (AP) FOR? This is an optional additional payment that covers what we consider to be essential activities on our tours. Ideally, we would include all of these but not everyone can afford this. This payment is 100% transparent and is listed within the itinerary of the tour. If you cannot afford it, or do not want to do the Activity Package, rest assured that your tour will remain uninterrupted and meals and the services of the guides will continue. All the itineraries in this brochure are written with the Activity Packages included. It is vitally important that you pre-book and pre-pay your activity Package along with your tour as we cannot guarantee availability of the items, should you only book this with your guide on the morning of departure.

Testimonials “We all agreed that the overland-truck concept was suited very well for a group of families like ours (with children approximately 10 and above) and is certainly something we would recommend to others. Very easy and convenient, better than driving all these long distances in separate cars on our own. Combination of camping and hotels were great (all good hotels). We hope we will be able to go in another journey in a few years!”-Thomas “We have just returned from a 13 day charter with Nomad tours to Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa. What can I say more than it was an absolutely amazing experience & as we had 8 family members with us - it was just us on the truck - aside of course from our totally awesome team of Norman ( tour guide / driver extraordinaire ) & cooking sensation Dumi ! This dynamic duo couldn't do enough for us on our trip. We felt that Norman constantly went over & above to make our trip such a memorable experience especially for the for 3 teenagers & our 11 your old. Nothing was a bother & both men we so very professional, heaps of fun to be around & so attentive & thoughtful to everything on the trip”. –Anne Mahon, Melbourne, Australia
Family
“Definitely by far the best bachelors I have been on! The guys were well prepared, well kitted and also very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the trip a lot as did the whole group. The overland truck is wicked! Had so much fun in there with the guys drinking and having a jol. “–Ruan Meyer, Cape Town , RSA

JOURNEY TO JOHANNESBURG
CAMPING
Our two day truck transit forms the link between many of our tours ending in Victoria Falls and starting in Johannesburg. This is the most cost effective way of travelling between the two points. However, it is not a tour and it is literally a way for you to get from point A to point B. The reason that we offer this service is because flights between Victoria Falls and Johannesburg are relatively expensive and this is a great way to save some of your hard earned cash and spend a couple more days with your fellow travellers.

Day 1 – Victoria Falls to Francistown Departing Victoria Falls early in the morning, we cross into Botswana and travel south to Francistown in central Botswana. We will reach our overnight stop on the outskirts of Francistown in the late afternoon.
Victoria Falls
Day 2 – Francistown to Johannesburg Another early morning departure, we continue to the border with South Africa and on to the city of Johannesburg. All travellers are invited to join us for a traditional braai which can be booked with your guide on the day before arrival in Johannesburg. Many great tales are shared around the braai fires and tonight presents an opportunity to join fellow travellers in celebrating the many wonders of African travel. We arrive in Johannesburg in the late afternoon.

SHARE WITH US ONLINE... SOCIAL MEDIA When we started Nomad back in the 1990’s it was rare to have any contact with our clients once they had travelled with us. Quite often past clients returned, years later, and did another tour, so we knew they had enjoyed the first one. Sometimes they sent us

letters or postcards! Time has passed, we have always had feedback forms for clients, but once the trip is over most people are busy moving on to whatever comes next... back to work, another country, a volunteer placement, back to studies, back to retirement! So this is a reminder to please share those pictures, thoughts and videos before you get back to the real world again. Our guides appreciate it, we appreciate it and our past, present and future travellers appreciate it. You will find Nomad on Tripadvisor, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr and several other forums. You probably looked Nomad up using one, or many, of these social networks before you travelled. All we ask is that when you have travelled with us that you please post some photos/video/thoughts with us and others. Mention our guides, they love getting feedback and let others know what to expect on a Nomad tour. If you have a blog, send it to us, we may ask to share it with our online network. We have a new website which launched in 2014 and we always prefer to use photos, feedback and video from our past travellers. It is honest, authentic and gives our future travellers the best idea of what to expect. And, if you want to do things the old fashioned way, send us a postcard! The address is PO Box 2600, Somerset West, 7129, South Africa. We all look forward to hearing from you.

SMALL GROUPS
It’s obvious that 12 people in a 12 seater vehicle is not a small group as space is still at a premium and you’re still travelling in a full vehicle, and with some operators this could be in a little van. A big advantage of small groups should be sufficient space and room to stretch out and 12 people in a 24 seater truck definitely offers all that and more.
Nomad is proud to be the only adventure tour operator to offer a “business class” option to our already well established and trusted variety of camping and accommodated tours. At the beginning of 2012 we launched our small group departures. Imagine the feeling that you get when you find that on your long haul flight, the seat next to you is empty and you get two seats to yourself and a window view… Now imagine experiencing that on your 20 day adventure tour! Our small group tours have a maximum of 12 guests on board our 24 seater truck which means that there is more personalised attention, more space to move around the truck, two lockers, two seats and a window for everyone! On average, Nomad small group departures cost only 8-15% more than our regular departures. As we have been running these exact routes for the last 19 years, Nomad can assure you of a quality product that represents the best these areas have to offer and excellent value for money, a cornerstone of all Nomad products.

There will be early morning game walks, evening game drives and before returning back to Johannesburg. We will visit the Panorama Route and view Gods Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels – all part of the World Heritage Blyde River Canyon.

WHY CHOOSE NOMAD?
Choosing the right adventure company is important. It can mean the difference between the trip of a lifetime or a tour that doesn’t meet your expectations. Adventure companies are not all the same.
Nomad’s story began over 20 years ago when Alex Rutherford, founder and owner of Nomad, undertook a trans-Africa expedition lasting almost a year. On that journey he encountered numerous companies offering trips to Africa. A niche was noticed between strictly budget tours and the more upmarket operations. It was on that trip that the founding principle of Nomad was formed: Do it better and do it for less.
NOMAD THE COMPANY Our Reputation The best endorsement we have for our tours is the feedback we get from our satisfied clients. Around the world our reputation has been established by word of mouth and that’s the greatest compliment that we could ask for! Due to our consistently high quality of service and product, various international travel organisations have appointed us as their preferred operator.
Nomad – Market Leaders “In those days we had one truck, 2 employees and one departure a month. Over the years we’ve grown to a fleet of around 47 vehicles, 150 staff and 70 scheduled departures a month all over Africa. Our success rests on consistently maintaining high standards in all aspects of our operation, while still retaining the magic and passion that saw us grow so successfully. We have not forgotten the lessons learned in the early days. Still wholly independent, we remain owner-managed and operated ensuring passionate attention to quality tours every single day.”
Nomad is one of the largest adventure tour companies in Africa, with a long and productive history in the industry. We have been respected as a professional and legitimate operation for over 19 years: Over 105,000 clients More than 34 million kilometres covered. Averaging 3 million kilometres and over 850 tours a year – our experience is unrivalled.
This makes us big enough to rely on, but small enough to care. No one invests more than we do into guides, trucks, equipment or infrastructure.
African Operators are best! We are extremely proud to be 100% African owned and managed. Living and working every day in Africa means that our finger is directly on the pulse of the continent. This ensures you receive the best Africa has to offer. Every cent we earn is spent in Africa - creating jobs! By choosing Nomad you ensure that a large number of Africans are directly employed.
Vehicles and Equipment Nomad has the newest and most modern fleet of vehicles around. Trucks are renewed on a regular basis. Our 47 adventure vehicles are amongst the finest ever built for this purpose. They are designed with safety in mind and we run a state-of-the-art workshop according to the highest standards. To this end, Nomad purchased 26 new trucks 2016, built 8 new trucks and will continue the fleet renewal for 2017.
More than 10,750 tours run to date 150 loyal and dedicated staff

Nomad Guides
Tour Dates
The success or failure of any tour depends heavily on the guides of the tour. It is with this in mind that we recruit, train and manage our guides. Nomad guides are known across Africa as great leaders, chefs and drivers by all who come into contact with them.
Nomad runs over 850 tours a year. Most tours run weekly or twice a month. Our availability means that there will almost certainly be a date suitable for you to travel on.
Tour Operations Our dedicated operations team of unique individuals have over 80 years of combined experience and ensure that our guides, vehicles and equipment function together seamlessly. Our team also ensures the best routes are chosen and provide unbeatable backup whenever problems occur. With all of this history and infrastructure behind us, Nomad runs great tours – balancing safety and reliability with fun and adventure – delivering some of the best value for money experiences available on the continent.
NOMAD – THE TOURS Tour Choices We offer the best variety of overland tours throughout Southern and East Africa. We cover 16 countries: South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Egypt & Morocco. image
Tour Directions All of Nomad’s tours run in a North or South direction or are Round Tours. This ensures we offer the best connections with regards to flights and tour extensions.
Guaranteed Departures Many of Nomad’s departures are guaranteed departures. The rest have a minimum of 4 clients required to confirm the tour. Fortunately, it is very rare that Nomad has to cancel bookings. Feel free to enquire about passengers booked when enquiring on any date.

Foreign Language Tours
image
Nomad has always been the premier foreign language tour operator. All our scheduled tours are conducted in English but on selected departures we offer a German (G) or Italian (ITA) speaking crew member to act as translator. In 2015 we introduced German Guided (GG) tours on selected routes.
Tour Linking Our unique tour linking system enables clients to mix and match various tour options allowing you to shorten tours or add tours together to make trips more personalised and unique.
Tour Prices
Maximum Passengers
There are no hidden costs in our tour prices; what you see is what you get. When you compare our prices, including any Activity Packages or local payments, Nomad is always the best value for money. We do not have food kitties as seen with other adventure tour operators.
Unlike a lot of competitors, all of our routes except the Cape to Vic Falls camping tour and sections (maximum of 24 clients), have a maximum of 20 clients only. Our small groups have a maximum of 12.

German Guided Tours Tour Durations Nomad offers tours ranging from 2 to 58 days in duration. This means that we cater to people with all types of requirements in terms of time and will have something for everyone, no matter what your constraints are.
These tours are available for guests who don’t speak any English. These tours are offered on our Cape to Vic Falls and South African Explorer accommodated tours. A fully qualified German Guide will be available on the tours and meals will be served from lodges. German Guided tours have unique departure dates and pricing is slightly different to our standard tours. See page 36-37 & 52-53 for details.

VEHICLES & EQUIPMENT
The trucks on tour are a major component of all adventure tours. These tours are road trips and incorporate long drives, bumpy roads and possible mechanical problems, also, digging your truck out of mud is sometimes considered a highlight. Nomad’s custom built adventure trucks are fully stocked before every tour, insuring the vehicle is ready for an epic adventure. Nomad vehicles are amongst some of the finest on the road however do not forget the nature of an adventure tour, it is not a city to city coach liner trip and there is no air-conditioning or toilets on the truck. Chat to your fellow travellers, play cards and enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Using your time on the road wisely will make the hours tick by faster.

EAST AFRICAN SAFARI VEHICLES Not all of our tours are operated on customised adventure trucks, some of them are operated on smaller, open top vehicles. These safari vehicles, such as the ones highlighted here, are able to handle rougher terrains and conditions than the larger trucks. Unlike the trucks these vehicles are not built to sustain long distance travel, but they are ideal for game viewing in the National Parks of the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Kruger.
