WHAT DOES NOMAD DO?

Dear Fellow Travellers, In 1997 Nomad was born with the basic founding philosophy of "doing it better, and doing it for less". While almost twenty years have passed this approach remains a cornerstone of what, and how, we do things at Nomad. 35 million kilometers, 10 500 tours and 105 000 people later, I can safely say that I truly believe we deliver, and will continue to deliver, on this promise. However, I think our greatest achievement is the small role we have played in exposing this magnificent place called Africa, to people from all over the world and the love and passion that has resulted. Word of mouth continues to drive our success. To our loyal and dedicated agents and clients over all these years, you have our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the support. To potential new Nomad's I can only say, come join the family and discover a destination like no other. See you on the road Alex Rutherford Founder and Managing Director of Nomad Adventure Tours

TOURS AND SAFARIS

On Accommodated tours, you can expect 2 – 4 star twin / double accommodation and the majority of it is en-suite. In some places, we also make use of permanent safari tents which are considered “accommodation”. Single supplements are compulsory if you are travelling on your own. Group Packages Our experience and expertise throughout Africa allows us to be able to create unique group tours for any number of travellers. We regularly do this for both private individuals and dive clubs. From 2 to 5 star, we do it all. Club Tours / Tailormade Nomad Dive has been successfully creating and running diving safaris for international dive clubs since 2010. These tours can fit club needs and timescales and offer attractive FOC tour leader places. Our Nomad Tailor-made holidays team are just the right people to speak to when planning your next African adventure. From FIT’s, to large

4

groups of over 100 people, we can accommodate your request. You decide how long, where you want to go, the attractions you would like to visit and we will design your individual tour.” Day Tours Nomad also offers a carefully selected list of Day Tours in and around the major cities of Africa.

OTHER SERVICES Pre and Post Tour Accommodation When starting or ending your tour, we always advise that you arrive the day before your tour is set to depart and leave the day after your tour ends. We can recommend and book a number of hotels for you. Airport Transfers We will also organise your airport transfers for you if you would like us to get you to or from your hotel, before or after your tour.

HOW DO ADVENTURE TOURS WORK

If you dream of having an authentic African adventure, a Nomad tour is one of the best ways to achieve it. We organise and plan everything for you, leaving you free to relax and really enjoy your African experience.

Fern Perry

Nomad’s Dive Tours have been created and are overseen by Fern Perry. With over 25 years of international dive experience, Fern is a PADI Master Instructor and TDI Extended Range Instructor. South African born, Fern worked as a diving professional in multiple countries and owned and operated her own dive centre in Indonesia, before returning to South Africa to focus on the diving that she loves best. “South Africa has the most incredible diving that I have experienced anywhere in the world. No other place offers such a vast array of big-ticket diving experiences. From dolphins to sharks, mantas and whales, you just never know what is about to swim past you. When you add Africa’s amazing land based highlights, there is just no other place to be.”

Travelling with Nomad means friendship, fun and adventure plus the security that group travel brings. Our unrivalled experience in Africa also ensures your holiday is well planned to make the most of our spectacular continent. All Nomad adventures are ‘off the beaten track’ and the emphasis is on the journey, as well as the destination. Unexpected events are part of the package and often add to your real-Africa experience.

WHO SHOULD, AND DOES, GO ON A NOMAD DIVE TOUR?

In the past, groups tended to be very young as the majority of travellers to Africa were backpackers. As Africa has become a progressively more mainstream destination (Africa today is far more accessible than 19 years ago) our guests have also changed. 19 years ago the average age of our travellers was around 23-27 years old and now we have anyone from 8-80 years of age, travelling with us.

DIVE CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE LEVELS

Diving in Africa ranges from gentle 5m dives with seals through to more challenging currents and 30m depths. Divers must be comfortable with conditions that include currents, swell, possibly rough boat journeys, negative entries and large species swimming up close and personal. For that reason Nomad Dive has set a minimum certification level of Advanced Open Water (or equivalent).

WHAT TO EXPECT?

The days usually start early and end late, although a lot of time is spent travelling, we do cram a lot into every day. An average day on tour begins around 6am and departure is after breakfast at around 7am. We lose approximately 5 hours of daylight in winter so it may happen that some optional activities are not available then. We usually take a lunch-break en-route and depending on the distance to be covered, afternoons are often spent relaxing or exploring the lay of the land. Our guides do all the cooking. However, you are welcome to ask the guides if you are keen to share your culinary skills with the group. The more you get involved, the better the group experience.

HOW TO DECIDE WHICH TOUR:

With so many tour options it can be hard to decide which tour suits you and when to travel. South Africa is blessed with year round diving. However some

highlights are seasonal and you may want to consider what the best time of year is for your most desired species. Winter months see aggregating Raggies, Whales and predation and breaching of Great Whites. In summer months Hammerheads arrive in their thousands. Water temperatures range from as low as 14° in winter to 27° in summer. Visibility is often better during the cooler months but averages between 5-25m year around. You may have a specific amount of time available to you. Our tours run from 4-25 days so you should find one that suits you.

NON-DIVERS ON TOUR

Nomad Dive Tours have been created to include many highlights, both above and below the surface. South Africa is a country of great beauty and much to offer, from the quintessential African safari animals, to the majestic scenery, unique culture and traditional foods and drinks. Our dive tours include as much variety as possible and many activities in addition to diving. Diving days are structured for early morning dives, meaning that by lunch time non-divers are back with the group and enjoying the land based aspects of the tour. Non-divers can sit back and enjoy relaxing mornings on the beach or with a good book, or take advantage of optional activities whilst divers are out. If you have a diving partner or family member you don’t feel that you need to miss out on this trip and can come along knowing that there is something for everyone.

WHAT’S INCLUDED, WHAT’S NOT, AND WHY?

There are always extra activities that you can do, but at Nomad there are no hidden costs and you remain in control of your choices and finances. What’s included? Transport in our specialised vehicles, the services of two qualified guides, meals, accommodation, specified activities and most National Park fees. What’s not included? Visas, vaccinations, items of a personal nature, alcohol, drinks, bottled water, snacks, activity packages and optional activities. All of our diving itineraries

"“Mighty lions, giant elephants, majestic rhinos, giraffes as tall as trees, monkeys swinging from branches, eagles and vultures circling through the skies, massive whale sharks, bull sharks, dolphins, schooling hammerheads and seeing mantas glide through the water are just some of the highlights of our South African dive tour! The Nomad team were incredible. The food was amazing, the travelling fun and well organised and our accommodations were always comfortable and clean. It was the trip of a lifetime and I would do it all over again. Thanks Nomad and Fern Perry for memories that will last me forever.” Vanessa Lill, Scotland

include cylinder and weights. For those divers who do not have their own equipment, rental can be arranged. Each tour will state the equipment rental price for all dives on the tour. Please note that you will either need to have a full set of gear, or pay for the rental of a full set. Individual items are not rented independently.

WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY PACKAGE (AP) FOR?

This is an optional additional payment that covers what we consider to be essential activities on our tours. Ideally, we would include all of these but not everyone can afford this. This payment is 100% transparent and is listed within the itinerary of the tour. If you cannot afford it, or do not want to do the Activity Package, rest assured that your tour will remain uninterrupted and meals and the services of the guides will continue. All the itineraries in this brochure are written with the Activity Packages included. It is vitally important that you pre-book and pre-pay your activity Package along with your tour as we cannot guarantee availability of the items, should you only book this with your guide on the morning of departure.

“I enjoyed the South African Dive Tour as a non-diver. Some friends were going and convinced me it would be fun. I was concerned about how much time I would be on my own whilst the others were diving but this trip was incredible. The safari was amazing and there were animals everywhere in Kruger. The accommodation was also great. I was able to enjoy lazy mornings with my book on diving days and by lunch time the group would be back and we could all have fun together. I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to join a diving or family member. You will not be disappointed even though you stay dry.” Diane Somerton, Australia

WHY CHOOSE NOMAD?

VEHICLES & EQUIPMENT

The trucks on tour are a major component of all adventure tours. These tours are road trips and incorporate long drives, bumpy roads and possible mechanical problems, also, digging your truck out of mud is sometimes considered a highlight. Nomad’s custom built adventure trucks are fully stocked before every tour, insuring the vehicle is ready for an epic adventure. Nomad vehicles are amongst some of the finest on the road however do not forget the nature of an adventure tour, it is not a city to city coach liner trip and there is no air-conditioning or toilets on the truck. Chat to your fellow travellers, play cards and enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Using your time on the road wisely will make the hours tick by faster.

Choosing the right adventure company is important. It can mean the difference between the trip of a lifetime or a tour that doesn’t meet your expectations. Adventure companies are not all the same. WHY CHOOSE NOMAD? Nomad’s story began over 20 years ago when Alex Rutherford, owner of Nomad, undertook a trans-Africa. A niche was noticed between strictly budget tours and the more upmarket operations. It was on that trip that the founding principle of Nomad was formed: Do it better and do it for less. “In those days we had one truck, 2 employees and one departure a month. Over the years we’ve grown to a fleet of around 47 vehicles, 150 staff and 70 scheduled departures a month all over Africa. Our success rests on consistently maintaining high standards in all aspects of our operation, while still retaining the magic and passion that saw us grow so successfully.” ALEX RUTHERFORD

GENERAL

Cape Town

Day 2/3/4/5/6 - Sardine Run The annual Great Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon that usually occurs during the months of June and July, when massive schools of sardines migrate from the colder waters around the Cape to the warmer waters of Kwazulu Natal. Once they’ve laid their eggs, they return to the Cape, closely followed by thousands of dolphins, birds, fish of prey, whales and sharks. The ocean awakes and the thrill is simply indescribable. After Breakfast at 7am you will be transferred to Mapusi, from where we launch our boat. In the meantime our plane has taken off and done a good fly over in search of animal activity. The skipper and the pilot are in constant radio contact whereby the boat gets directed to the best action on hand. Sardine Run Action consists not only of silver fish but more so of activities such as whales, dolphins, sharks and gannets. Wherever there is something happening the boat will go.

Sardine Run

Each day we will launch (weather permitting) and spend a full day out at sea to give you the best chance of action. We return by latest 3pm each afternoon when you will get a chance to rest, relax, hike the area and charge those all important cameras. Each evening we have a sumptuous buffet and share tales of the day just past. Day 7 - Coffee Bay to East London Today we will retrace our steps from Coffee Bay back to the town of East London where our tour ends upon arrival.

Cape fur seals are endemic to Southern Africa. They are found as far north as the southern tip of Angola, with colonies occurring all along the coastlines of Namibia and South Africa, up to Algoa Bay near Port Elizabeth.

The Hole in the Wall is a rocky archway set just off the Wild Coast, south of Coffee Bay in the Eastern Cape. The little holiday village close by shares the same name. This landmark was created millions of years ago through the restless action of waves against sandstone and shale.
