WORKSTATION DESIGN FOR MULTI-SCREEN USERS FOCUSING ON THE HEALTH OF NECK

01 WORKSTATION

Target User Represented by stock brokers, multi-screen users suffer from neck problems because of the way they work.

01 WORKSTATION

Problem Statement For example, a stock broker often stares at the screens for hours with one posture. When the stock broker tries to lean back to relax his back, the comfortable angle to look at the screen is gone. This dilemma needs a solution to save the stock broker’s neck without losing the view angle for working.

Concept Development After playing with a six-movement robotic arm, I decided to develop a two-movement concept. Because for the purpose of adjusting angles, two movements can meet the requirements of the task.

01 WORKSTATION

How to Use The key point of the final concept is a robotic arm with two movements. When the user sits at a comfortable position, as the screen holder, the robotic arm can adjust height and angle of the screen to make the screen point user’s face in an appropriate position.

Cleaning in 2016 Work Flow of Cleaning in a Restaurant

Busboy Is a Surprise

Filthy Towels

Based on an interview with a busboy in a local restaurant, I got a chance to look at a real work flow of cleaning thoroughly. One obvious key person that makes this flow run well is the busboy.

Besides the cleaning work, Some busboys bring an extra entertaining effect to a restaurant. Bravo!

According to the interview with a busboy from a local casual restaurant, normally, they only dump the wiping towels once a day. Before they change the towel, it’s already too filthy to clean the tables.

Hard Set Oil When the oil left on the tables gets cold and set, it can not be easily wiped off just by a piece of wet towel.

WITNESS OF RIVERS WATERTAP DESIGN

03 WATERTAP DESIGN

The Witnesses Embraced, shaped and left by water, stones are the witnesses of rivers. Their shapes tell you the water has been running for a long long time. The river has been living for a long long time. Inspired by stones, our watertaps are like the stones in our home. They are the witnesses of the stream in our house.

PORCELAIN CLOCK

AWARDED BY FRANZ PORCELAIN DESIGN AWARD IN 2012

04 PORCELAIN CLOCK

Inspiration Time is a Dimension Clocks display time in two ways, digital and traditional. They are all in a plane. However, neither of them is the real way to understand time. Actually, the Theory of Relativity tells us that time is a process from past to future. Time is a demension, what we are seeing on a clock is just a section of time, like a cutting section of a cylinder. So I decided to design a perspective clock.

TUBE MUSIC: DESIGN RESEARCH + PROTOTYPE APPLYING DESIGN RESEARCH METHODS AROUND THE TOPIC OF MUSIC PLAYLIST WITH A PROTOTYPE FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

06 TUBE MUSIC

Prior Study Data collecting was my first step of the research. Then I let people talk about their experiences of music listening as I led the topic with several prepared questions

How Do People Manage Their Music Playlist? Huge number of songs When to listen How to group songs ...

Interviews

Current Cases

06 TUBE MUSIC

Data Coding

06 TUBE MUSIC

Main Findings Four key features of music listening are: Playlist, Mode, Situation and Devices. They influence each other. Different situations lead to various choices of devices and playing mode.

06 TUBE MUSIC

Main Findings Proportions Proportions reflect users’ preferences of music listening. All the subjects use laptops, as for mobile devices, proportions vary. Cell phones result to be the dominant choice which surprises me that iPods are not.

Observations There are some observations from the interviews. They are also reflected by the coded datas.

Shuffle is the dominant mode. Skipping songs happens in this mode Picking songs always takes unnecessary time Users prefer to manage the playlist on large screens One main folder with a large number of songs of various genres is the dominant strucutre of the playlist

06 TUBE MUSIC

Main Findings Personas

+ Scenarios

1. Leaving for school

2. Selecting a song to start listening

1. Driving to work

1. Houseworking

3. Walking on the way 4. Skipping the current to school song

2. Starting today’s work

2. Taking a break

5. Putting back the 6. Arriving school cellphone to pocket without getting all the favorite songs

3. Getting back home

3. Shopping online

4. Leisure after work

06 TUBE MUSIC

Opportunities After analysizing all the data, I found three possible directions as the opportunties. Designers can conduct further design activities around those opportunities. In this case, I did an initial prototype.

06 TUBE MUSIC

100 songs

25 songs

5 songs

Prototype: A Playlist Like Test Tubes

1

I let several people join the game to see how they deal with the big mess of songs.

2

I told people to select a playlist out of a pile for a 15-mintue and a 2-hour play.

3

I covered different parts of the playlist and asked people what the songs were.

1

2

3

06 TUBE MUSIC

Final Proposal I tried to use three small structures to represent different tasks. Structure 1 is for normal editing and browsering. Structure 2 is for quick selecting. A user can select several songs at one time then start playing them all. When several songs are picked up,the estimated time to play all of them will shows on the top. A user can use tag and filter to select particular songs or she/he can use random button to get a page of songs with different tags.If you press the start button without any selecting, it is default to play all the songs displayed. Structure 3 is for quick tagging. Right side is a slowl self-rolling list, when you want to tag one of the songs, you can select the tag on the left first, then tap the song on the right to tag a song successfully.

CRUTCHES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS AN ONGOING CRUTCH DESIGN PROJECT WITH EMPATHETIC DESIGN THINKING FOCUSING ON USERS IN COLLEGES

07 CRUTCHES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

One Day, A College Student Broke a Leg The story begins with the day I accidently broke my leg. Then I started to go through a process of recovery. Everythings went well until I was trying to make up for the Halloween party... I was trying to be a zombie on that day, but my crutches and cast sold me out. Then I came up with the idea to also smear “blood on my crutches. It turned out that my crutches looked like part of my costume.

Awkward Moments

How to Place the Leg As a college student, taking class is in the daily routine. However, how to place crutches in the classroom, how to place injured leg while having a class are somehow special challenges.

I still look like a real zombie on the Halloween party!

Heavy Doors Door opening is another special challenge for college students. Although many people with warm hearts would help you open the door, Those heavy doors in public buildings somehow are still potential danger.

Fake Blood

Real Injury

07 CRUTCHES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

New Opportunity: Empathetic Thinking College students are a group of people that have a lot of interactions with surrounding students, faculty and facility. Once they get on crutches, not only their daily routine, bue also their thoughts and feelings will change a lot. So applying empathy design to study this issue is a new opportunity to develop crutches different from any other crutch before.
