Sugar beet spacing has a definite sweet spot. Too high of a population per foot and the yield drops. Too low of a population per foot and the sugar content in the beets will lower. One test found the highest sugar content (17.1%) on fields with seed spacing between 4.5 and 5 inches. The sugar percentage dropped to 16.9% for fields sown with seed spacing between 5 and 5.5 inches and to 16.5% for fields planted at seed spacing of 5.5 to 6 inches. Sugar beets face two competing factors in seed spacing. Seeds that are spaced too close together will reduce the overall tonnage produced (represented by the black bars) while seeds that are spaced too far apart will lower the overall sugar content (represented by the red line). The entire idea of vertical tillage is to manage residue and prepare soils by lifting soil vertically instead of horizontally. Sale Time for Tuesday, Dec. 30th @ 9:00 Fed Cattle, followed by weigh cows & bulls, then Special Feeder Cattle @ 12:30pm, then Special Bred Cows/Hfrs/Pairs/Bulls Dad always said “If you don’t have anything good to say don’t say it” so I guess I won’t talk about this wet cruddy weather. Let’s talk the markets, what a last 2 weeks. One of the worst overall performances of the feeder markets in recent history. This real quick downturn was not driven at all on fundamentals, but more on a very over bought and racing market situations. As of Monday morning Feeders are trending higher and hopefully we’ve found stability. We need to hope that cutouts will start improving because we need $160+ Fed cattle to support these feeder levels. Last week proved to be a very good one here at the market with 3 big auctions. FED cAttLE/WEIgh cOWS tUES., DEc. 16th With lower futures and lower cutouts, Fed cattle were $3 lower this week. Is the bottom in?? Kind of feels like it. Cutouts need to work higher, they have fallen off considerably and maybe they’ve got some room to head higher. Weigh cows were stronger, ground beef at over $4/lb should support weigh cows for some time. Special weigh auctions on Tues, Dec 30 & Jan 7th.

Well heading into Friday our attitudes were getting pretty sorry. Limit losses on the feeders Monday-Tues-Wed made prospects bleak. And then it was said “Let there be Light”! The markets Friday turned around and the buyer activity on Friday’s auction was as good as we’ve seen this year. The fact that Friday’s auction was a sanctioned Western Iowa event helped quite a bit.
